To: Mr. John Kerry, US Presidential Envoy on Climate July 25, 2021 Today, man has only a rudimentary understanding of climate’s operating scenarios. However, scientists have a great deal of evidence that makes it possible to calibrate and interpret data from many sources. By introduction, I am a graduate geologist and a retired professional engineer with over 60 years of oil industry experience across the globe. I have devoted the past 11 years, since my retirement, to climate research as a member of the TRCS (The Right Climate Stuff) research team. My letter is confined to geological and geophysical topics on climate where I am recognized as having considerable expertise. The Earth’s natural phenomena prove the planet’s climate is altered and regulated by forces far beyond the control of man. The most important of these are: -

-

The declination of the Earth’s axis, the precession of the axis, and variations in the Earth’s orbit around the sun. The intensity of the Sun’s rays on the Earth’s surface and atmosphere, solar storms, and random strikes by meteors and/or asteroids.

Now, lastly, we must consider phenomena that exist on the planet itself: -

-

Movement of the Earth’s tectonic plates that shift the continents and alter ocean currents. Massive volcanic eruptions – throughout Earth’s history eruptions from time to time have thrown enormous dust and ash particles into the atmosphere where they circled the globe for decades creating global cooling and often ice ages.

The Earth’s geological history records considerable data on many of these items through rock types and sequences, ice cores, deep-sea sediments, lava flows (land surface & sea depths), and craters remaining after a meteor or asteroid strike. More recent data is obtained from the study of anthropological and archeological sites, which are scattered over the planet. Science is based on evidence and therefore, new evidence can alter earlier conclusions. Remember science is not based on consensus. By definition, a scientific theory is an explanation of the natural world that can be repeatedly tested and fully verified in accordance with the scientific method using accepted protocols, measurements, and evaluations of results.
