LANTERN THE 2023-24
WELCOME TO THE LANTERN
To the class of 2024,
You’re wrapping up your final months here at John Brown University with a whirlwind of events. We had our largest incoming class in University history join us in the fall, so plenty of new faces are around that we don’t recognize (Can you believe that was you just a few years ago?). We had weather so cold that it tried freezing out our dormitories and classrooms and it did break our fountain but didn’t break the spirits of everyone who bundled up and braved the snow. If you’re like me, you’ve had friends graduate in December and you’ve wished them well, but also wondered with excitement (and some fair share of anxiety and trepidation) about your own launch into the next chapter of your life this May.
You’ve had good days, and bad days, and days that defy description. You’ve left your mark on JBU, no matter how quietly or loudly you built your legacy. Whether you were here for 2 semesters or 5 years, you were a part of a moment in history that will never be repeated again. This copy of The Lantern could never capture everything, but our hopes as a team is that it will serve as a reminder as the years go by not only of what you experienced here, but also of what you created in a larger campus community.
As JBU’s Archives Coordinator, it has been an absolute joy to preserve and share the world that JBU students have created in the previous 105 years. However, my favorite joy has always been to watch you in the present spending your time here learning, questioning, experiencing growing pains, navigating all types of relationships, and figuring out who you want to be when you walk off the stage at graduation. Pro tip: that person is allowed to change their mind, and I hope and pray that you’ll keep learning, keep questioning, keep striving to live in relationship with your neighbors, and keep growing more and more into who you were made to be.
As for me, after 16 years as the University Archivist, I’m following in your footsteps and leaving JBU for what the next chapter holds. This final year was a rollercoaster of emotions, and I have to give some shout-outs: Library crew, you’re the best coworkers I could imagine, and I wish I could take you all with me. Kathryn, my favorite person for sharing offices and shenanigans in the Alumni Welcome Center. Archives work studies, for tackling whatever project I lobbed at you with grace and humor, and for letting me into your worlds. My Fall 2023 Gateway class, to work through concepts like intellectual virtues and calling alongside you while I felt like my world was crumbling, you were the reason I got out of bed some mornings—I never failed to leave class feeling more hopeful about the future. And last but certainly not least, to my wonderful and scrappy little Lantern team, for putting in the effort and the hours to create something together.
Our legacy here at JBU is over, but the rest of our lives are just beginning.
This is the way.

ORIENTATION
A record-breaking 384 freshmen moved onto JBU campus on August 16th, officially kicking of Orientation. Parents and the class of 2027 were warmly welcomed by Orientation Leaders, faculty, staff, and Deb from the Caf! Many of the first freshman friendships came unintentionally either by meeting roommates, RAs, or that random invite to eat at Waffle House at 3am. O Leaders are the facilitators of these first experiences, providing a gut-punching schedule that lasts for five days. Memorable events include Big Games, Serve Siloam, and Sunday morning church with your O group. Orientation also establishes new students, who might feel overwhelmed with an unfamiliar location, in the JBU environment. What is surely to be remembered is the excitement and nervousness that comes with stepping foot on campus as a JBU student for the first time.

NATIVE FLAG DEDICATION
On November 2nd, 2023, JBU kicked off Native American Heritage Month with the dedication of the Native Flag Ceremony. For the first time, flags representing Native nations will be on full display at the Walker Student Center. The 76 plus JBU students with Native heritage on campus this year will now see themselves represented with the nations of our student body. Our honored guests included representatives from the Muscogee (Creek) and Cherokee Nations, who sat together during the ceremony. The night ended with a presentation in Simmons Great Hall celebrating Professor Bobby Martin’s Council Oak mural, which depicts the story of the Muscogee Creek Nation, of which Martin is a citizen. The mural is installed at Council Oak Comprehensive Healthcare in Tulsa.
Hundreds of students, alumni, and members of the Siloam Springs community packed themselves onto Alumni Field August 25th to enjoy the 10th annual First Friday Futbol! This spectacular event contains the first Men’s and Women’s soccer games of the season, JBU spirit, and tons of free merchandise. The Men’s team won 4-0 against Southwestern, with the Women’s team winning 2-0 against MidAmerica Nazarene. Jacob Zamarron, fifth year senior who plays for the soccer team, said that the atmosphere was electric. Along with the game, First Friday Futbol this year served as the dedication of the new Champions Pavilion, a new facility that contains concessions and new bathrooms. President Chip Pollard was there for the dedication giving away free merchandise to any student that approached him. Here’s to another ten years of First Friday Futbol!

BREAKAWAY 2023
From September 22nd-23rd, hundreds of JBU students embarked on a weekend getaway to New Life Ranch–Flint Valley in Colcord, Oklahoma for Breakaway! Breakaway takes place towards the end of September, when many students are in need of rest. This setup of being away from campus allows for students to recharge with friends without a campus setting getting in the way. Breakaway is also an encouraged period to spend time with God, as a worship team was out there singing songs for the Lord. SMLT hosted this yearly event, with this year’s speaker being Dr. Jamie Collins. Her talk focused on what it means that the God we serve is a God who ordained rest for us and prioritized rest Himself! With excitement, entertainment, and planned rest, Breakaway is much appreciated by the JBU community.
HOMECOMING
Homecoming 2023 had a record number of alumni return to JBU, ranging from recent grads to 50-year reunions. Close to 400 people were on campus from October 6th to 7th, which began with a special Homecoming Chapel. The Board of Trustee meetings also coincided from Thursday and Friday as well. Alumni Board meetings were on Friday and then they volunteered on Saturday. The Alumni Breakfast was the largest event attended, with almost 200 attendees participating. The Alumni Board presented their annual Alumni Awards, and President Pollard addressed alumni on campus updates. The Cathedral Choir ended Homecoming celebrations with the Alma Mater and “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.”
LATE SKATE
Three hundred and sixty-eight adventurous JBU students drove to Springdale this year to enjoy Late Skate in Space! Through the power of time and space, each student had the fearless task of not losing their balance and falling in front of the entire student body. Many of the favorite costumes of the night included an “Among Us” inflatable, Jedi and Sith warriors from Star
Wars, or suited up characters from the “Men in Black” franchise. Some people—like Junior Nick Cox—took the space theme literally and insisted on dressing up as a “Space” key that’s on a keyboard. Regardless, this pre-COVID tradition continues to expand and become more fun with each passing year.
On Friday, Oct. 27th, at the Bill George Arena, the John Brown University men’s basketball team defeated the Barclay College Bears during the 40th Toilet Paper Game. The Toilet Paper tradition has its origins back in 1984, going from an elaborate prank by a group of students to an essential part of Spirit Day. This year, students were encouraged to wear blue, enjoy some BBQ at the cafeteria and shoot some hoops to win prizes. In preparation for the game, fans traded in canned goods for a roll of toilet paper to toss onto the court when JBU scored its first basket. The remaining 2,000 unused rolls were donated, along with the canned goods, to the Manna Center in Siloam Springs.
TP GAME
MOCK ROCK
Mock Rock was back this year with more acts, more crazy lights, and more personal stories! The annual tradition of lip-syncing to songs enjoyed high fanfare this year, highlighting the success of last year’s event. The hosts this year were Sam Patterson, Senior Art and Illustration major, and Yamil Tenorio, Junior Integrated Marketing Communications major. Most of their time on stage consisted of small skits, improvised audience questions, and stories that kept people off their seats! Many of the acts themselves were a mashup of many popular songs or smaller group performances. Our first-place winners this year were “JBU Relationships be like...” a mashup of the stereotypes placed upon dating JBU students, as they navigated the awkward phase, orientation couples, and being in it together. This event is sure to continue being a fun tradition at JBU.
TALENT SHOW
The 2024 Talent Show was a fantastic way to end the annual Family Weekend, where hundreds of people packed into the Cathedral to watch their peers get out of their comfort zone and perform in front of a live audience. A couple of highlights from the program included Andy Graham and Alex March running around the stage while simultaneously attempting to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and Quentin Hartman teasing a new album he plans to release later this year as he performed a new song he wrote. This year’s show was packed with other unforgettable performances that will continue to be in the minds of JBU students.
WeekWorld Awareness
World Awareness Week was kicked off during the week of November 6-10th. This exciting week began with the Tuesday Flag Chapel, where the flags of over 30 countries were flown over the student body. This also included Native American flags for the first time ever! Bobby Martin, Professor of Visual Arts, and Corey Carey, Graduate and Online Admissions Representative and former Missionary in Residence, were the speakers for Chapel this week. In a change of tradition, this year the International Food Festival was held in the Fall, also coinciding with this special week. 20 countries, and their delicious food, were represented on this night, with the country of Jordan winning first place in most popular food! From Tuesday to Thursday, there were tables at Walker Student Center promoting Missions work and other internship opportunities.
VOICES & VOTES
The opening of the Smithsonian’s exhibit Voices and Votes: Democracy in America in the Windgate Visual Arts West building began with a live panel of civically engaged people on September 7th. The purpose of this event was to have a conversation among the panelists and then the audience about voting, elections, and political participation. Along with the debut of the exhibit, students and guests were able to hear from a wide variety of people including Dr. Daniel Bennett, Associate Professor of Political Science; Dr. Trisha Posey, Dean of Undergraduate Studies; Chris Seawood, Corporate and Institutional Giving Manager at TheatreSquared; and Yamil Tenorio, Junior Integrated Marketing Communications student. Nearly 100 people were in attendance, with many for the first time understanding the significance of making your voice heard in both national and local elections.
CCCU DIVERSITY CONFERENCE
The 4th National CCCU Diversity Conference was held over Fall Break, October 15th through 17th. Over 300 people were in attendance from all over the country, as teams of professionals from Christian universities engaged in dialogue with one another. There were over a dozen speakers, including President Chip Pollard and Dr. Aida Ramos, Dean of the College of Education and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The conference also included a screening of the documentary “Juneteenth: Faith and Freedom” and plenary sessions concerning the state of the nation and increased focuses on Hispanic Serving Institutions. A special Communion service was held at the Cathedral as the final
event of the conference, which unpacked the opportunities before us to serve the present age. Many faculty, staff, and students were also in attendance, furthering the Head, Heart, and Hand motto for diversity at JBU.
Candlelight
From December 7th through the 9th, 2023, the annual Candlelight Service ushered in the Christmas season for countless JBU students, faculty and staff, as well as for alumni and the community of Siloam Springs. Hundreds of people, coming for the beloved tradition that attracts visitors from all over Northwest Arkansas each year, flocked and packed into the Cathedral of the Ozarks. For the 81st year, JBU continued to provide this event for free. Music was performed by the Cathedral Choir, University Chorus, The Brass Connection, String Ensemble and the much beloved Organ. With the Cathedral entering a renovations period this upcoming summer, this years’ service will be the last one with the traditional stage.
ATION AL
F OOD FEST IVAL
The Council for International Friendship serves as the vital link between international students and domestic students. CIF began this year with their annual Hispanic Heritage Festival, hosted by Yamil Tenorio! This year, there were dances, trivia questions, and an interview with Dr. Miguel Rivera and Dr. Aida Ramos. CIF also hosted the annual Salsa Night and the International Food Festival. 20 countries this year were featured with drinks, food, and prizes! Jordan won for most popular food table. CIF is committed to continue spreading the love of other countries with non-traveling students and has been a great way to increase the attention of other countries.
Moonlight Breakfast
Moonlight Breakfast is a finals week tradition that is meant to help JBU students with the midnight munchies. Student Events and Activities (SEA) hosts this event to provide a free breakfast to all JBU students, who might need a few more calories to finish studying for their exams. There was also a raffle provided by SEA, which included prizes like hats, scarves, gift cards, and a Hydro Flask! Many of the workers on this night are Student Development team staff members, including all Resident Directors who served eggs and bacon to their residents! It is a much beloved tradition to all who have walked the halls of JBU.

LATE SKATE
On Ice
JBU students rode frozen waves and cruised onto an open rink during this year’s Late Skate on Ice! This annual tradition was held on March 8th from 10pm-12am and had students duke it out over a Surfers vs. Bikers themed event. SEA oversaw this event and had many surprises throughout the
night. About 125 students attended the event, which was hosted at the Jones Center in Springdale, AR. For some, ice skating comes naturally; for others, ice skating came less to be desired. Regardless, Late Skate on Ice is sure to remain as a mainstay of SEA events.
Junior-Senior Banquet
BARNYARD ON THE QUAD
In an unusual move, Barnyard on the Quad took place on the Monday of finals week this year! Hundreds of JBU students partook in holding cute bunnies and adorable pigs while feasting on some delicious snacks. The event was hosted by Student Events and Activities (SEA) to relieve the stress of students who might already be drowning in piles of finals work. Students not from rural areas were particularly excited, as they saw animals escape sometimes. Barnyard is a relaxing way to take a break at the end of a busy semester.
Pin Ceremony
Fall Festival
The SEA Fall Festival was held on October 21st, with an incredible attendance! With Fall break over, this event was meant to ease students into both a change of pace and a change of season. Live music from the local music group “Tiny Camper” was performed next to the clock tower. Students were able to let loose and join in a game of Archery Tag on the Quad; fortunately, no injuries were reported for this event! Line dancing was o ered last, as the sunset glazed over the many students dancing until they couldn’t anymore. Peers and friends, in the meantime, were able to paint pumpkins; eat caramel apples, pies, and chili; drink apple cider; and enjoy a Fall photo booth to encapsulate the memories of one of the more relaxing weeks on campus.
COMMUTER LIFE
JBU is a community that serves students from near and afar. We have a thriving international community with students from 45+ countries as well as stateside students representing 33+ states. JBU also attracts students from the region making commuting a viable option for many.
In the recent past, Commuters had a designated cozy space on the second floor of Walker Student Center. This was a place they could see Commuter announcements, put their food in a fridge and utilize daytime lockers for their belongings.
As the Commuter population grew, so did the need for more commuter space and services. JBU now has the equivalent of two residence halls worth of Commuters. To service this population, we now have a newly constructed Commuter Lounge made possible by the Schmieding Foundation. The lounge is centrally located in the Walker Student Center adjacent to the bookstore. There is a kitchen area, communal study areas, individual study areas, lounge areas and lockers. This space has been a great place to relax, prepare meals, and vconnect with others. The Schmieding Foundation Commuter Student Lounge averages 80+ student visitors a day.
The Commuter Life team organizes monthly commuter activities such as BBQs, tailgates, Community Hours, Holiday celebrations and more. Commuter Life also partners with SEA, Student Events and Activities, to promote and incentivize all campus activities for the commuter population. Other Commuter Life services includes the Hall Away From Home program connecting commuter students to the Residence Halls. This is a great way for commuters to be ‘adopted’ by the Residence Halls with invites to Residence Hall events and programs. Commuter Life also includes the emergency gas card program, the food pantry program, rideshare digital board, commuter Eaglenet and social media groups as well as commuter student advocacy through Student Government.
COMMUNITY HOUR
GRANDPARENTS
DAY
206 grandparents arrived on campus September 19th to participate in this year’s Grandparents Day! Grandparents were given all morning and afternoon to see improvements on campus, participate in campus life, and (most importantly) spend time with their grandchildren! The day began with a catered buffet where grandparents and grandchildren ate together. After hearing an update from President Pollard, grandparents were invited to a Chapel service led by Keith Jagger on Matthew 5 and 6. Lunch was provided, and grandparents could sit in classes to listen and maybe participate. A reception in the afternoon was hosted in Simmons, where grandparents could write a note for their student to receive in the mail. With record turnout, Grandparents Day continues to be a beloved annual JBU tradition.
Family Weekend was held during the weekend of February 16th & 17th 2024 and featured a wide range of events that entire families could partake in. Families were greeted during their registration period, which was immediately followed with a special family weekend Chapel on Friday. Many opportunities were given to family members to sit in their students’ classes throughout all of Friday. Many families ended their first night by watching the spring play “The Glass Menagerie.” The weekend concluded on Saturday with the 2024 Talent Show and featured a judges’ and people’s choice award.
Family Weekend
FAMILY
COWBOY
Christma s
Cowboy Christmas was one of the hottest selling events this year! Within hours before the event, all tickets were sold out. Additional tickets were made available, but those sold out rather quickly as well. The event was hosted by SGA, and took place at the Holland Barn in Highfill, AR. There was line dancing with Caller Bob, Ozark Mix DJ music, and a photo booth to make the memories last longer. In addition, snacks and food were all over the place, including Crumbl cookies and Chick-Fil-A nuggets. Students were highly encouraged to dress in a festive country casual outfit, resulting in wacky attire. With Christmas so close, the event allowed for friends to spend time together while making it all enjoyable.
J ALVIN CHRISTMAS PARTY
The annual J Alvin Christmas Party was in full swing on December 5th, 2023, where the over 200 men of J Alvin competed to see which suite had the best theme! This yearly tradition has been imperative to the goons of J Alvin for decades. Many freshmen, for the first time, had the joy of hosting their suites for laughs and fun. Many of the themes this year had unusually long wait times, some stretching on the first floor as far as the Christmas tree! An insane asylum, a haunted house, Ken’s Mojo Dojo Casa House, WrestleMania, and Basketball were some of the many themes on full display. Logan Lawrenz, RA of suite 25, had decorated his suite into a national park and won the competition. With grass and Batman in the bathroom, the attention to detail for the winners was impressive.
Fall Break
Fall Break was greeted with warm welcomes by the student body, as hundreds of JBU students embraced the four-day weekend as a much-needed break in the middle of a demanding semester. Students who stayed on campus had the opportunity to interact with hundreds of representatives from other Christian universities around the nation who gathered at JBU for the CCCU Diversity Conference. Meanwhile, many other JBU students participated in university-sponsored Mission trips to multiple places across the Midwest. One group extended their stay in Tulsa, while the other had their trip in Chicago. The spirit of the Lord was present on these trips, as students navigated new urban surroundings and met people whose different backgrounds and life experiences expanded their perspective on the world.
Super Bowl Party
v Spy Spy
Spy Vs Spy was in full force this year as chaos, anxiety, and double crossings flourished around every building on campus. For students attempting to survive Spy Vs. Spy, wise connections and stealth were prized possessions. Over 250 students signed up for this beloved tradition, one of the highest rates of participation since the pandemic. The gist of the game is simple: shoot your target with a tiny shark water gun before you are hit yourself! Once hit, you give your target to the person who hit you, and so forth. This year’s game ran from April 8th through 12th, and surely brought a deep air of anxiety for students before the thought of finals ever came. Andy Graham won the water balloon finale, and Annie Krempl won for most blasts.
Spring Retreats
From March 1st through 3rd, the annual Men’s and Women’s retreats took place. This special weekend was meant to be a joyful time of rest, fun, and community while diving into what it means to have an identity grounded in Christ (Women’s Retreat) and Biblical manhood (Men’s Retreat). The Women’s Retreat was held at New Life Ranch – Flint Valley, and featured guest speakers Kim Cornett, instructor of electrical engineering; Hope Cureton, assistant professor of nursing education; and Michelle Kim, associate professor of engineering. The Men’s Retreat was held at Ponca Bible Camp with guest speaker Maxie Burch, professor of Biblical studies.
Northslope & Townhouses
For upperclassmen, there is nothing more important than having the opportunity to grow in fellowship with best friends while being able to experience autonomy within the JBU campus. Over 100 students live in the Sheridan Townhouses each year, which divides into apartment-style living arrangements of eight to ten people. Each group lives with friends who are sure to make lasting memories with each other. Part of the experience of the townhouses is making a daily trip to Ground Floor coffee. Located in the basement of a townhouse, the student-run coffee shop allows for an escape from the business of campus life. The Townhouse assistant resident director is Lesly Valenzuela, a senior double majoring in Economics and Accounting.
Hutcheson
Walker
Hutch Hall is beloved by its residents who get to escape the crazy shenanigans of J Alvin, or the dramatic life of being a Mayfield girl. The co-ed dynamic of the hall offers a space of mostly first year students to live in community with each other. Three of the floors this year were occupied by woman, with the first floor for men; In a typical year, the floors are usually split two and two. Hutch is the “chill” dorm on campus, mostly owing to its distance from the main buildings. The most popular event to come out this year has been a monthly worship night, usually hosted by the RAs of the building. With its spacious rooms, Hutch is the place to be! Lila Lemus, a junior International Business and Entrepreneurship & Innovation double major, is Hutcheson’s assistant resident director this year.
Walker Hall enjoys a convenient location on campus. Its 168 residents enjoy classes, food, bathrooms, and bedrooms all in one building, all at the heart of campus. The lounges on the second and third floor allow for groups of students to hangout and relax knowing that their dorm is upperclassmen. For many, Walker symbolizes the next step of dorm life, moving away from the noise of J Alvin and Mayfield to an area that can truly be characterized as calm. This year, due to the record enrollment, we had about a dozen freshman move into Walker. This year’s assistant resident director is Sam Patterson, a senior Art and Illustration major.
Mayfield
JAlvin
Mayfield’s recent renovations have given new life to the only all women’s dorm. About 230 students reside here, ranging from freshman all the way to seniors. Senior English major Morgen Cloud, Mayfield assistant resident director, enjoys the hall style of the dorm that allows for her and her residents to mingle with everyone in the building. “I can go to a different hall and find groups of people from several different rooms. Then, the same group might leave and join another group comprised of totally different people. The environment is more integrated,” said Cloud. “Because of that, I believe it’s extraordinarily friendly and connected.”
Spontaneous. Exhilarating. Unrelenting. These are some of the words that could sum up the lives lived for the almost 200 men who live in J Alvin this year. For over 100 years, J Alvin has been the one-stop shop for all things crazy around campus. There is no telling what the only all-men’s dorm campus is going to do next. This year, the Assistant Residence Director is David Carbajal, senior Psychology major. As a four-year resident of J Alvin, Carbajal has been instrumental in keeping the traditions of pre-COVID J Alvin. A great tradition that came back under the leadership of Carbajal was the Man Dinners hosted in the Atrium. As JBU continues to grow with record enrollment, so does J Alvin.

ESPORTS
“Participating in JBU Esports has been an incredible experience! My time with my teammates goes past the world of gaming; The camaraderie shared between my fellow gamers has given me some of the best friendships I have had. It doesn’t matter if we went to a Waffle House bonding night, or the build-up from teammates before games are some of my favorite parts of being a member of my team. For those who played video games in high school, like me, the Esports program has allowed me to find other students with similar interests and passions. It has truly enriched my university experience in ways I couldn’t have imagined.”

SMLT
Student Ministries Leadership Team (SMLT) has put on a multitude of events this year, ranging from the Breakaway retreat in September to the Men’s and Women’s Retreats in March. Both the Fall and Spring break trips to cities like Chicago and Dallas provide students with opportunities to learn from those working in these urban contexts. CAUSE Ministries have impacted the Siloam Springs community through work projects or visiting nursing homes. One of the newest ministries this year is Seed and Soul, which helps clean an elderly lady’s home. Other organizations like Young Life, Side by Side, and growth groups continue to bring vibrant spiritual community for many students. SMLT fostered spiritual vitality among individuals personally and as a campus communally through intentional programming and discipleship. students.

MODEL UN
This year, JBU represented the countries of Russia and Malta at the annual Model UN in St. Louis, Missouri. Students from all four colleges embarked on a four-day trip, from February 21st to 24th, to act as ambassadors to these countries, even if the JBU students themselves did not agree. The simulation of the UN General Assembly and other bodies that comprise the United Nations allowed for participants to refine their public speaking and network skills. In, total, 250 students from over 50 schools attended the event. Yamil Tenorio, Senior Integrated Marketing Communication student, caused a dramatic end to the conference when he was caught attempting to legalize nuclear warfare on behalf of Russia, only to call for a moment of silence while calling down the entire body of 250 students.

AEI is dedicated to preserving and strengthening the foundations of a free society through independent thinking, open debate, and reasoned argument. Members of AEI went to Washington, D.C. and Gainsville, FLlorida for conference trips to listen and to share AEI’s commitment to fostering a healthy competition of ideas, defending human dignity, expanding human potential, and building a freer and safer world.
VAF
The Visual Art Foundry club held several events for the art department this year, including the annual Student Works Show. This show is open to the community and rest of campus who vote on their favorite pieces. VAF also held other campus wide events like the Halloween party and Christmas Party. The Annual Arties award show was held on March 8th, awarding students who had exceptional works this year. The filmmaker of the year award went to Brody Martin, a senior who is currently working on a documentary about the Abila of the Decapolis archeological site in Jordan.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION
The Student Government Association (SGA) had a productive and exciting year with numerous projects and activities. New ping pong tables were added to Walker and Hutcheson Residence Halls, providing a fun and engaging activity for students to enjoy with friends. Balzer Technology Center received a kit of supplies, featuring some of the handiest tools for engineers, while J Alvin basement saw the addition of a new punching bag for students to work out and de-stress. Mayfield Residence Hall received a whiteboard and markers, providing students with a valuable tool to collaborate and brainstorm. Senators initiated all these projects, and SGA made every effort to bring them to fruition. In addition to these projects, SGA hosted several activities throughout the year, with the Junior-Senior Banquet being the highlight. It was a great opportunity to honor seniors and celebrate their achievements before graduation!
HMOSAIC
o n o r s
MOSAIC is the Multicultural Organization of Students Active in Christ. Events include but aren’t limited to book clubs, conferences, guest chapel speakers, and banquets. These programs help not only MOSAIC members but also the larger JBU campus access diverse opinions and opportunities. MOSAIC is hard at work to help fulfill its biblical mission to bring together a community that celebrates and better reflects the diversity of God’s kingdom. In its efforts to help promote diversity, MOSAIC also works with other student leadership teams such as SMLT and Residence Life to help develop Christian leaders that can lead interculturally.
PSI CHI
Leadersh ip Team
Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology at JBU, strives to provide service, information, and fellowship to the JBU community. The chapter hosts different events that are open to the entire student body, such as movie nights, dinners, special presentations, and speakers, including alumni of the JBU Psychology department.
CRECIENDO JUNTOS
Creciendo Juntos (Growing Together) is a program provided by the Office of Intercultural Engagement to empower Latino students at JBU to flourish in higher education through supportive community. Since its beginning in Fall 2020, Creciendo Juntos has grown exponentially, with this year’s enrollment being now up to over 60 students! Each student attends a workshop and performs 3 hours of community service each month. A change with this year has been separating years into cohorts so that Creciendo Juntos can serve its students better.

“The Play That Goes Wrong was quite literally that! An ambitious group of British theatre enthusiasts attempt to put on a murder mystery. The amateur group inadvertently reveals to the audience a behind the scenes look at all the quirks that go into a theatre production. It becomes readily apparent that things aren’t in the cast and crew’s favor and scene by scene disaster avails – actors that can’t play dead, actors who accidentally keep getting knocked out, actors who can’t remember their lines, a set that eventually falls apart, a spontaneous fire, and mess after mess.”
MARY PATTERSON
Music & Theater Events & Publicity Coordinator
“It was a run marked with enthusiasm—all but one of our actors were freshmen—and laughter that greatly encouraged our BPAC’s hardworking students and faculty. Thank you for supporting JBU’s Music and Theater Program by keeping our audiences full, and we appreciate the continued opportunity to offer our community quality live theater here at JBU.”
ELLA FLETCHER, Junior English major, Costume Designer
THE ADDAMS FAMILY
Wednesday Addams
has grown up and
fallen
in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family—a man her parents have never met.
John Brown University chose The Addams Family as the 2023 fall musical, with the family comedy gracing the stage of the Berry Performing Art Center on Oct. 27th and 28th and Nov. 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The Addams Family was the first production in which the theatre department was able to use newly installed projectors, giving the audience a new dynamic to see parts of the show. Over the five shows, there were 1,449 in attendance. Many of the performers were underclassmen, and yet, each performer gave it their all while singing about normal nights, no longer being tortured, or moving towards the darkness.

Over 900 people attended the showing for the Spring 2024 play, The Glass Menagerie. A stunning set enveloped the intimate cast of four actors within their portrayal of the classic play by Tennessee Williams. Cast members Gabe Thomas, Mayson Montgomery, Ella Fletcher, and Nick Loper captured audience members with a delicate introspection on memory. This is the first of two shows to be produced by JBU Theatre this spring, with the other production being shown in April. The audience loved this production so much that each show was marked with a standing ovation. There was a full house at the close of Family Weekend, and the cast celebrated another successful theatre production.
Fly By Night
“Fly By Night” centers around Harold McClam, played by freshman Heath Stark, a young man who has just lost his mother. The audience follows him during the year following his mother’s death as he falls in love with two sisters, Daphne and Miriam, played by freshman Noelle Hogue and senior Rachel Mann respectively, and struggles to find happiness in his job. As romance is had, and sandwiches are made, each character finds out more about themselves and the world around them.
