With purpose built classrooms, outdoor play areas and plenty of green space, the school provides pupils from ages 3-11 the space and environment to thrive. Classes are small to ensure each child benefits from individual attention and support and standards are high, both academically and pastorally.
As a Quaker school, Bootham emphasises responsibility for self and for others - with a premium on integrity, honesty and trustworthiness from an early age.
Through a lively curriculum and a varied range of activities, dedicated staff strive to embed the necessary skills for the educational challenges that pupils will face in the years ahead.
Bootham has an excellent reputation for its pastoral care and maintaining the health and well-being of pupils is extremely important. Staff work with parents and guardians and welcome active support and involvement. Good work habits, co-operation and tolerance create the happy, family atmosphere for which the School is known.
Comments below are from the latest Independent Schools Inspectorate report.
“Throughout the school, the pupils’ spiritual development is outstanding. Pupils of all ages absorb the school’s Quaker ethos which embodies the key spiritual principles of unity, peace and tolerance. In doing so, pupils, including the youngest, develop into kind, compassionate human beings with a keen sense of service and duty to others and a firm moral compass. From the central Quaker tenet of looking for the best in each individual, they gain self-awareness and from the school’s emphasis on celebrating and cherishing individuality, they gain high levels of self-confidence and self-esteem, whilst remaining strongly empathetic to others.”

Brontë House School – a bright beginning for a bright future
Brontë House is an independent, co-educational school in Yorkshire welcoming pupils from 2 to 11 years. Set in large, beautiful grounds with sports fields, a separate woodland and play area for our Nursery pupils and ample parking for stress free drop off and collection.
Our latest ISI inspection rated our school as “Excellent”.
At Brontë House, all of our wrap-around care, co-curricular activities and meals – plus swimming lessons from Reception upwards – are included in our fees.
For busier families we also offer a 51 week contract for Pre-Nursery and Nursery pupils as well as a term-time only option.
Learning at primary school is not just academic. It is the softer, social skills that develop during this time that are the key to future happiness. Brontë House is the perfect size for your child to flourish. Classes are small enough to allow teachers to get to know each individual child’s academic strengths and challenges, as well as the way in which they are best motivated to learn; yet large enough to provide children with a wide social circle in which to foster friendships.
“The best thing about Brontë House is how happy it makes my child. To see my daughter so positive about school, making friends and feeling safe and supported in the school is invaluable.” Brontë Parent
Sport plays an important role in life at Brontë House, giving our pupils so much more than just physical fitness. It is a delight to watch personalities flourish within a team, leadership skills develop and resilience grow. Our specialist sports staff know every child is different and create a sports offering that is inclusive yet challenging – and most importantly, a lot of fun.
“Since coming to Brontë, my child has blossomed. They now look forward to school each day and have rediscovered their love of learning.” Brontë Parent
Performing Arts is considered an integral part of every pupil’s experience at the school; developing confidence, creativity and teamwork. We encourage all our pupils to learn a musical instrument and whatever a child’s musical tastes or ability, they have ample opportunity to get involved.
The Grovian values we encourage in Nursery, are supported throughout our school. We cultivate confidence, commitment, resilience and respect knowing that these qualities will allow future generations to flourish and prepare them for life; school life, teenage life, family life and work life.
By moving through to our senior school, Woodhouse Grove, we can offer your child a seamless education from 2 to 18 years.

The Scarborough College Prep School is a small, safe and friendly haven for children aged five to eleven, with the Little Owls nursery adjacent and the Scarborough College Senior School right across. A thriving Prep School, numbers have doubled in the last seven years, despite the financial crisis and global Covid pandemic.
The Scarborough College Prep School merged with its prestigious neighbour Bramcote Prep School in 2012. The Prep School remains true to the traditions of a prep school and takes full advantage of being co-located with an active and successful senior school as well as its excellent and extensive facilities. In addition to small class sizes and specialist teachers from Year 3, pupils enjoy access to a wide range of sporting facilities, science and arts classrooms, LAMDA provision and private music tuition to name but a few. Pupils in Year 3 and up take full advantage of first class education by subject specialists who either come from across the Senior School or teach the children in specialist classrooms in the Senior School. This enables a much smoother transition to the Senior School and its offering of different subjects.
A well-balanced and healthy lunch is taken in the senior school. Provided by renowned independent school caterers Holroyd and Howe, all lunches offer three varieties of hot meal, daily homemade soup, an extensive salad bar and delicious deserts.
Sport is an important and daily focus in the Prep School and teams have been successful in sports such as cricket, hockey, netball and rugby; including being crowned North of England Champions in hockey a few years ago. Representative sports are practiced daily in the junior school and from Reception onwards, children have daily games lessons. Using the Scarborough College fleet of minibuses, the players in the junior school often go out on fixtures to take on local rivals. Though the school does not have its own swimming pool, a nearby holiday park is used for weekly swimming lessons.
Under the enthusiastic guidance of a Prep School performing arts coordinator, the Prep School enjoys a busy calendar of musical and dramatic events. With
an infants’, junior school and chamber choir; the Prep School is a place where music takes centre stage. Midweek music concerts, participation at the Eskdale Festival and the Prep School Production are but a small number of performances on the agenda each year.
The unique location is a key feature of the Prep School. Not only do all children live less than 30 minutes’ drive from the school, the close proximity to the beach and the moors means outdoor education is thriving. As early as the Little Owls nursery, children enjoy Beach, Forest and Adventure School. Science, Geography and History lessons take place along the stunning coastline, at nearby Dalby Forest or in the school’s own allotment. Trips away to nearby farms, meandering rivers and interesting rock formations are as frequent as trips on foot to sunny South Beach for a game of beach cricket.
Pupils in Year 6 start focusing on their transition to the Senior School and the vast majority will earn a place at Scarborough College. In recent years, more than 95% of all Year 6 pupils continued to Scarborough College. The Prep School does not offer SATs and Year 6 is more than just a year of learning and transitioning. Pupils’ highlights of Year 6 are the camping trips and the annual Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.
To find out more about the Scarborough College Prep School, please visit scarboroughcollege.co.uk/educationaljourney/scarborough-college-prepschool/ or contact Mr Chris Barker, Head of the Prep School, on 01723 360620. We would be delighted to show you around the school or arrange for a taster day. Alternatively, you can look out for our Open Mornings and our special open days that take place at the end of each month, Friday’s For You.

Woodhouse Grove School is a coeducational day and boarding school located in Yorkshire. With our Prep School, Brontë House, we can provide a seamless education from 2 to 18 years. Boarding is from Year 7.
Our campus is set in idyllic countryside with outstanding facilities, yet only four miles from Leeds Bradford Airport and with direct train links to Leeds City Centre. With artificial pitches, competition pool, climbing wall, recording studio and 230 seater theatre, the opportunities for our students are endless.
Offering an “all-round” education and academic excellence - Woodhouse Grove is proof that both can flourish under one roof, as confirmed by our ‘Excellent’ rating in the latest ISI inspection (2017).
The Grove is well known for its ability to produce well-rounded, go-getting, entrepreneurial young people. The school’s sporting heritage and success is firmly established – and it’s performing arts offering is second to none. Combine this co-curricular pedigree with a strong academic ethos, as explained by our Deputy Head, Ed Wright, and it’s a win-win for parents and pupils.
“We see learning and academic success as a collaborative effort between the teacher and student. Every member of staff works incredibly hard to get to know their individual students – to understand their drives and motivations, how they learn and what they want to achieve.”
Grovian values are instilled in pupils from the start of their Grovian journey and include being kind and generous, committed and resilient, enterprising and resourceful.
To be a “Grovian” is something that benefits pupils long after they leave the school gates for the last time. The school’s alumni – or “Old Grovians” – form a close, altruistic network across a huge variety of fields – from Red Arrows Team Leader to Engineer; Chief Executive to the West End.
Our school ethos, outlined by Headmaster, James Lockwood,
“At Woodhouse Grove we appreciate that every child has their own unique personality, talents and skills. We nurture and celebrate this individuality at all stages of their education.
Prospective parents are impressed by the confidence, commitment and respect shown by our students and choose Woodhouse Grove to deliver their child’s education and unlock their potential.
We recognise this potential could lie anywhere – so we offer every pupil a huge array of opportunities and experiences. We take pride in identifying and honing their strengths as well as giving them the confidence to tackle any challenges.
I am proud of our holistic approach which prepares each and every Grovian for life beyond the classroom.”
