Bootham Junior School is situated on the outskirts of the beautiful and historic city of York. The Scarborough College Prep School is a small, safe and friendly haven for children aged five to eleven, with the Little Owls nursery adjacent and the Scarborough College Senior School right across. A thriving Prep School, numbers have doubled in the last seven years, despite the financial crisis and global Covid pandemic.

The Scarborough College Prep School merged with its prestigious neighbour Bramcote Prep School in 2012. The Prep School remains true to the traditions of a prep school and takes full advantage of being co-located with an active and successful senior school as well as its excellent and extensive facilities. In addition to small class sizes and specialist teachers from Year 3, pupils enjoy access to a wide range of sporting facilities, science and arts classrooms, LAMDA provision and private music tuition to name but a few. Pupils in Year 3 and up take full advantage of first class education by subject specialists who either come from across the Senior School or teach the children in specialist classrooms in the Senior School. This enables a much smoother transition to the Senior School and its offering of different subjects.

A well-balanced and healthy lunch is taken in the senior school. Provided by renowned independent school caterers Holroyd and Howe, all lunches offer three varieties of hot meal, daily homemade soup, an extensive salad bar and delicious deserts.

Sport is an important and daily focus in the Prep School and teams have been successful in sports such as cricket, hockey, netball and rugby; including being crowned North of England Champions in hockey a few years ago. Representative sports are practiced daily in the junior school and from Reception onwards, children have daily games lessons. Using the Scarborough College fleet of minibuses, the players in the junior school often go out on fixtures to take on local rivals. Though the school does not have its own swimming pool, a nearby holiday park is used for weekly swimming lessons.

Under the enthusiastic guidance of a Prep School performing arts coordinator, the Prep School enjoys a busy calendar of musical and dramatic events. With

an infants’, junior school and chamber choir; the Prep School is a place where music takes centre stage. Midweek music concerts, participation at the Eskdale Festival and the Prep School Production are but a small number of performances on the agenda each year.

The unique location is a key feature of the Prep School. Not only do all children live less than 30 minutes’ drive from the school, the close proximity to the beach and the moors means outdoor education is thriving. As early as the Little Owls nursery, children enjoy Beach, Forest and Adventure School. Science, Geography and History lessons take place along the stunning coastline, at nearby Dalby Forest or in the school’s own allotment. Trips away to nearby farms, meandering rivers and interesting rock formations are as frequent as trips on foot to sunny South Beach for a game of beach cricket.

Pupils in Year 6 start focusing on their transition to the Senior School and the vast majority will earn a place at Scarborough College. In recent years, more than 95% of all Year 6 pupils continued to Scarborough College. The Prep School does not offer SATs and Year 6 is more than just a year of learning and transitioning. Pupils’ highlights of Year 6 are the camping trips and the annual Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.
