Clear Creek Education Foundation (CCEF) announced it will host its second annual “Dine Out to Donate” event on Monday, Sept. 21 and is excited to have 31 local restaurants participating. Participating restaurants will donate a portion of their Sept. 21 revenue to CCEF to benefit the students and teachers of Clear Creek Independent School District. “This year, the response to the Clear Creek Education Foundation’s Dine Out to Donate has been tremendous,” said Kaci Hanson, CCEF Executive Director. “The community continues to demonstrate its strong support of the Clear Creek Independent School District, and we thank all of the participating restaurants for their commitment.” CCEF encourages citizens to dine out for a good cause on Monday, Sept. 21. The process is simple – patrons enjoy a meal at a participating restaurant, and restaurant proprietors donate a portion of the proceeds to CCEF to support its many programs, including Teacher Innovative Grants, National Board Teacher Certification, Clear Horizons Early College High School and Technology Education Labs. - Continued on Page 12

3rd Annual OKTOBERFEST Returns The Tastes Of Germany To Kemah October 9, 10 & 11 City Parking Lot The third annual Oktoberfest in Kemah is bringing in hand-crafted beers from all over the world! There will be a 9,000-square-foot beer tent for all to enjoy. The highly anticipated Oktoberfest in Kemah has become a huge, muchanticipated event and will be held on Saturday, October 4 from noon to 11 p.m., and Sunday, October 5 from noon to 6 p.m. Oktoberfest in Kemah will be held in the heart of Kemah at the City Parking Lot at 604 Bradford Street, adjacent to the Kemah Boardwalk and inside the Lighthouse District. Traditionally, the world famous Oktoberfest is held annually in Munich, Bavaria (Germany), running from late September to the first weekend in October. It's one of Germany’s most famous cultural events to enjoy beer, traditional polka music and German food such as sausage, kraut, and pretzels to name a few tempting tastes. But there is no reason to plan a trip to Germany for the official Oktoberfest, since Gulf Coast Festivals plans to bring Germany to you, right here in Kemah. Send your taste buds on a memorable adventure to Europe and experience the best handcrafted “Old World” beers available, including those from Germany, Holland, Austria and many more.

LIVE MUSIC LINEUP: EDDY RAVEN (The Hitmaker): Born Edward Garvin Futch, it's no wonder that his name was changed by a record executive to Eddy Raven on his very first single, released on tiny Cosmos Records in the late '60s. Raven has charted more than thirty-five singles in his career, including the Number One hits "I Got Mexico," "Shine, Shine, Shine," "I'm Gonna Get You," "Joe Knows How to Live," "In a Letter to You" and "Bayou Boys," as well as several more Top Ten hits, including seventeen consecutive Top Tens between 1984 and 1990. Numerous influences have made his music almost indescribable: the Cajun sounds of his native Louisiana, the blues influence from working with Johnny Winter, the rock & roll of his idol (Elvis Presley), and the pure country of the Grand Ole Opry. Raven will take the stage on Saturday, October 10 (7 to 10pm) Performing at 2015 Kemah Oktoberfest on Friday, October 9, is Das Ist Lustig (3-6:30pm) and Jarrod Sterrett (710pm). On Saturday, October 10, Enzian Buam (Noon-3pm) and Breelan Angel (3:30-6:30pm) will take the stage before headliner Eddy Raven (7-10pm). Das Ist Lustig (Noon-5:30pm) will preform on Sunday, October 11.

Clear Creek Education Foundation’s Dine Out To Donate: CCEF board member and South Shore Grille owner Mickey Wooten developed the concept for “Dine Out to Donate” last year and has led the effort for CCEF again this year. “As restaurant owners, this is an opportunity for us to give back to the community,” said Wooten. “Clear Creek Independent School District is very important to the area. Demonstrating our support of the district by donating a portion of proceeds on one day during dinner (only) or lunch and dinner is a great way to support educational excellence.”

Air Force THUNDERBIRDS and Breitling Jet Team to Lead 31st Annual WINGS OVER HOUSTON Airshow Oct. 17-18 The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the Breitling Jet Team headline this year’s Commemorative Air Force (CAF) 31st Annual Wings Over Houston Airshow, which will be held Saturday and Sunday, October 17 and 18, at Ellington Airport. The Thunderbirds, performing as a team of six F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, return to Houston following their last Wings Over Houston performance in 2010. The Breitling Jet Team from Europe, the world’s largest professional civilian flight team that performs in seven L-39C Albatros jet aircraft, will end their first U.S. tour with this first-time performance at Wings Over Houston. “We’re excited to present two very high-caliber jet demonstration teams this year, which is why we strongly recommend you purchase tickets now to get reserved seating,” said Bill Roach, airshow director. “We had record attendance last year and expect to draw even more people who haven’t seen the Thunderbirds here in five years, and they also want to see the Breitling Jet Team on its first U.S. tour. We’re still putting the final touches on the show and will update our website as we finalize performances and special events.”

The show also features civilian acrobatic performances and reenactments by vintage CAF military aircraft; the performance list and show is being finalized and updates are posted on the show’s website, www.wingsoverhouston.com. Other highlights of the show include static displays of vintage and modern military aircraft as well as numerous exhibits and activities including: Heroes & Legends Tent featuring distinguished veterans signing autographs and memorabilia, NASA Driven to Explore Exhibit, Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Hangar 57, Experimental Aircraft Association, National USA Forces Museum, The 6th Cavalry Historical Association, Kid’s Carnival, motion simulator rides and more. Visit the airshow’s website, www.wingsoverhouston.com, for show updates and to purchase tickets in advance. Tickets can also be purchased by calling 888-4-FLYSHOW. Purchase early for best pricing as ticket prices go up as event nears and to secure reserved seating. Tickets can be purchased at the gate on show days, but premium reserved seats sell out early. General admission tickets will also be available at area Kroger stores by midSeptember. About Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Wings Over Houston: The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Wings Over Houston Airshow is a non-profit 501(c)(3) community event produced by a volunteer effort of the Gulf Coast Wing, Houston Wing, and Tora! Tora! Tora! of the Commemorative Air Force, with support from the Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston, Texas Legends Flying Museum, Vietnam War Flight Museum, Lewis Air Legends and Collings Foundation West. The Airshow is dedicated to showcasing vintage World War II aircraft, along with the thrills of modern aviation. One of the top air shows in the United States in its category, the CAF Wings Over Houston Airshow attracts more than 90,000 festival goers throughout Houston as well as from around the globe. The 2015 Airshow benefits the CAF Wings Over Houston Airshow Scholarship Program, Aviation Career Education Academy, Exchange Club of Sugar Land, Westchase Rotary Club and the Commemorative Air Force aircraft restoration and flying historical programs, in addition to numerous other non-profit participating organizations.

Featured Artist: Jenifer Sundrla

By Kelley Dawson

Local Artist Jenifer Sundrla mastered the melding of realistic and abstract art. Though seemingly contradictory; her paintings integrate two very different styles seamlessly. “It’s literal with a twist of abstract,” said Sundrla. The abstract portion of the painting typically remains in the background with the more realistic subject in the foreground. Sundrla shared, “I always start with the background and then the subject. I envision how it should be and go to the canvas and make it happen.” Most of Sundrla’s art contains drips in the background which she explained first started by accident “and just went from there.” The signature drips enhance the unique character of Sundrla’s works. Her mixture of methods and shading techniques depict such depth and texture making the subject literally leap from the abstract backdrop. Acrylic is Sundrla’s medium of choice. She said, “I like to paint big.” Her large-scale pieces include a variety of subjects “from crosses and trees, to sea life, animals and most recently sporting art.” Sundrla also told she loves all coastal creatures, and they are her current niche for selling at this point in time. Sundrla said she has always done art since she was a child. She studied art at the University of Houston-Clear Lake and then taught art at Friendswood High School for 13 years. - Continued on Page 24

17th Gulf Coast Film Festival to Honor LEW TEMPLE By Peggy “Domino” Taylor The 17th Annual Gulf Coast Film & Video Festival will be presenting actor Lew Temple the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cascade Award Gala on September 12, 6:30 p.m. at the Sundance Grill, 800 Mariners Dr. in Kemah. Master of Ceremony for the evening will be PBS Channel 8 TV host Ernie Manouse. Manouse also produces and hosts the syndicated series InnerViews. The film festival will be held September 11 and 12. Many actors and directors will be scheduled to appear along with Lew Temple, including actor Brandon Smith, actress Michelle Simmons and Broadway dancer Claudia Cox. Lew Temple is an American film actor, perhaps best known for his roles as Axel on "The Walking Dead," the character of Ned Oldham in the action adventure thriller, "Unstoppable" which also starred Denzel Washington, Chris Pine and Rosario Dawson; directed by Tony Scott, and Cal the diner manager in the comedy-drama “Waitress." Born and raised in the Bayou Country of Louisiana, Temple is an extraordinarily diverse actor who often is compared to a chameleon: He has the unique ability to take any character and make it his own.

Other film credits include the ranger, Hollis in the summer, 2013 Disney blockbuster "The Lone Ranger," alongside Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer; Locus Fender in the action film "Domino," starring Kiera Knightley and Mickey Rourke, directed by Tony Scott and Rob Zombie's "The Devil's Rejects" with Bill Moseley, Sid Haig, William Forsythe and Sherri Moon Zombie. Temple began his acting career on the stage of the prestigious Alley Theatre in Houston, working alongside artists such as Vanessa Redgrave in "Julius Caesar" and "Anthony & Cleopatra," as well as acclaimed writer/directors Michael Wilson, Terrance McNally and Edward Albee. He next landed numerous television roles, as well as roles in independent and mainstream studio films, such as "On the Borderline," "The Newton Boys, and “Angels in the Outfield." - Continued on Page 24

formed at Scout Bar would consider the notion – the action and the energy the night of Fear Factory was Scout Bar Signature. Looking at the calendar ahead, we’ve got a great Tour Stop Clear Lake ahead of us in the coming month. Grab a copy of the SCENE and keep it handy,

However, digging further, it became apparent as the band grew older that the original members would be unable to keep up a touring schedule of typically 85 shows a year better suited for a younger cadre of musicians held together by elder statesman Wayne Nelson at the helm. And with this formula, despite absent original members, fans have the means of partaking and enjoying the spirit of the music perhaps a few clicks above that of cover and tribute level shows. Using this type of formula would probably be too late for the likes of the Beatles or Rolling Stones; however, it does seem viable for many other popular music acts in recent decades. Worked for me…

you’ll be glad you did! IT’S A WRAP – The Dog Days of Summer are winding down – meaning it’s safe to come out to the patio. Labor Day weekend is upon us which means 2015 is heading into the easy strokes. Be sure and root for your hometown teams as baseball is winding up and football kicking off. Also, also, also – Do your soul a favor, and go catch a live music gig or a few out there. We have lots of great live music happening in the area including the Fab 40’s presentation of Tommy at Discovery Green on September 26. A quality fund-raising event is also lined up for the Emmanuel Gilligan at 18th St. Pier on October 3. Scheduled to headline this benefit will be Hollywood Steve Rangel’s Second Wind band – A group I haven’t heard in quite some time which should be a dandy. Also, while you’re at it, grab yourself an extra copy of the SCENE, and keep it handy for when your special someone is needing to be in the know of all the cool things happening now and happening here. Got it? They’ll think you’re cool... ;-) Take care, and we’ll see you out there on the SCENE!

TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE – And this month, we stopped in to see The Fear Factory – a crazy powerful metal/industrial band from Los Angeles. In between his clean and shouted vocals with death growls, lead singer and Houston-born Burton C. Bell reconnected with his hometown fanbase giving them an incredible show that evening – and the fans gave back, complete with some good, old-fashioned mosh pit action. Totally absent from the equation that evening were the Folks and Ambient music genres reported as interests on Burton’s website which was fine by us. Maybe some other time, but not tonight. I’m going to guess that national and international acts who have never per-

It’s one big party from start to finish, and we have some of the best regulars in town! Top 3 items you recommend to customers? Jackie’s stuffed shrimp coupled with Karbach’s Weisse Versa and topped off with a 151 peach kamakazi. Do you have a Signature drink? 151 peach kamakazi. 151 is twice as fun with two shots in one! List 3 criteria that make a GREAT bartender: Patience, showmanship and knowing that bartenders are here for the patrons, not the other way around. What do you love about bartending? It’s fast-paced giddy-up and go. I get to have a great time at work, and I get paid for it! Best tip you ever got: $1000 tip from Mr. Petty just after we found out we were having a baby! Who motivates you? My family and pretty much everyone who walks through our doors. I want everyone to be spoiled (responsibly) and make Jackie’s Brickhouse their home like I have.

Dawgs, who was opening for the Little River Band at the Ft. Bend’s Women’s Shelter fundraiser held in the Stafford Performing Arts Center. We need a place like that on this side of town. Tommie’s band features a strong lineup with Steve Hitt on lead, Handsome Bob Bridges on Bass, Jerry Chambers on drums, and a totally surprise of a find, Cliff Jackson on acoustic guitar & vocals. The headline act, Little River Band was an interesting show to take in. As one of my favorite bands back in the day, I found it necessary to do some research to fill in what all has happened over the decades which includes 31 former band members and none of the original members, seemingly a bad omen.

It’s a fitting tribute that T-Bone Tom’s has been recognized by this national organization beyond what we locals already know the place for – great food, attentive service, lots of local live music, cheap wings and beer! BTW – I’m designating T-Bone Tom’s as one of my designated watch areas should our Astros make it into the playoffs. Consider it, too...

ON PLAYING ON – Like normal people, musicians have a life to live that usually includes family and related interests and with that, Tommie Lee Bradley is no different than many of you, taking time and making time for what’s important. But when this Houston Force of Nature is back behind the mic, hang on! I arrived onto the SCENE a bit later than many, and it wasn’t until postHurricane Ike and during the stretch of GBAMA benefits before Ms. Lee and I crossed paths. I was fortunate to catch her in August and was included in Tommie’s entourage with her new band, Big

This year’s presentation was held at Aspen’s in the heart of the new Clear Lake Shores Cultural District. No Parrot Head gathering is complete without fun tropical live music, this time with Dennis Davis and JR on the Aspen’s stage. Aside from having fun, an underlying theme relevant to all Parrot Heads, present day and future members is a rebellious streak with origins to those seeking an escape from the rat race to the serenity found on the sea and sands. If the rat race is starting to find its way into your cellar, wise up before it’s too late and join with the Galveston Bay Parrot Heads Club (www.gbphc.com). On a side note, we were able to catch up with Southbound USA’s Steve Johnson, on the mend under strict doctor’s orders after getting his Achilles reattached and along with you all out there, I am wishing Steve the best of recoveries ahead.

of regulars at the Brickhouse right up there with Madigan, Mambo Jazz Kings, Hamilton Loomis, and the Velcro Pygmies. Musically, these guys technically nail it, but moreover, they provide a persona and projection of fun happy times for all, which arguably goes further. Cheers! ASSORTED AFTER-DINNER LED ZEPPELIN DANCE TUNES

– Which is what we found at T-Bone Tom’s in August with OGRE (Old Guys Rock Excessively) on stage. And in true Smucker’s fashion, with a name like OGRE, you’ve gotta be good. Aside from the endless stream of Led Zeppelin and other feisty dance songs, this band brings along a seasoned fan club, regularly places in the upper rankings at Houston’s Battle of the Bands (not too shabby), and practices a rare stage technique of getting folks to listen closer by simply playing quieter – People want to listen... They’re that good.

MUSIC APPRECIATION – We were at the Fab 5’s first show at Jackie’s Brickhouse and thought a follow up was in order. I remember at their first show there, the audience wasn’t sure whether to sit and be appreciative of the well-done Beatles presentation, or to have fun as if there wouldn’t be another tomorrow. Eventually, they wised up and did both – which is what audiences have been doing ever since. One cool thing I’ve noticed about this gig is how the Fab 5 has developed a following

The highly anticipated Railean Light Whiskey should be available for the holidays. The International Talk Like a Pirate Day “parrrty” also coincides with the one-year anniversary of the expansion of their facility. To meet growing demand for its liquor, a 3600-squarefoot building was constructed next to their original space and half of the space is home to a visitor’s center, a gift shop, and the Buccaneer Bar. It’s all top shelf RAILEAN liquor and premium grogs (cocktails) served at the Buccaneer Bar. And the price is more than right at $4 and $5 a glass. Enjoy creative drinks such as a “Talk Like a Pirate Rum Punch,” the “Scurvy Dog Margarita,” a “Bloody Pirate,” and the “Dark & Stormy.” The other half of the new building is for barrel storage and the relocation and expansion of the bottling line. Railean’s original distillery building is used for the manufacturing of products and the operating of stills and fermenting equipment. The visitor area offers cool air conditioning for the hot months and roll-up garage doors to be opened when the weather is gorgeous out and not quite as hot. It is a great place for private events such as happy hour get-togethers, bus tours, book clubs, Harley clubs, and bachelor/bachelorette parties, and the like. It is also the home-base for tours given by Kelly Railean, a master distiller and the company’s founder and namesake. The enthusiastic Railean explains how she got into the distilling business, and discusses fermentation, distillation theory and operation of the still, dark versus white rum, spirits distilled from agave, barrel aging, and the bottling process.

Sixty Awesome Episodes. One Awesome Show. Yo! Sunday, Sept 13 SCOUT BAR

It all started with a video of a homeless man curbside doing at impressions of characters from the hit TV show Breaking Bad for food that went viral on YouTube. Who cares that the man wasn't homeless, but a struggling comedian from the midwest who chased his dreams to Hollywood. Miles Allen was just having fun in a private joke among friends that ended up online, instantly changing his life. Billed as "One Man Breaking Bad: 60 Episodes in 60 Minutes," Allen’s hit show uses impersonations to break all six seasons down into one and as performed to sell-out runs at comedy festivals abroad. The 34-show American tour launches on Tuesday, September 8 in Tucson, AZ. The sixth stop of the tour will be at Scout Bar on Sunday, September 13. The two other Texas shows are in Lubbock (Sept. 11) and San Antonio (Sept. 12). A 26-show United Kingdom Tour starts three days after the last US show in St. Louis, MO (Oct. 24). Allen is reported to “smack the senses with his supercharged, crazily accurate renditions of all the iconic characters, including Walter White, Jesse, Saul, Skyler, Hank, Walt Junior, Mike and Gus Fring.”

“Weirdest Band In The World” coming to town!!! Mac Sabbath @ SCOUT BAR • Sunday, Sept 26 The SCENE is excited to report California’s top-rated McDonald's-Inspired Black Sabbath Tribute Band is coming to town on Sunday, Sept 26 for a gig at Scout Bar.

Blaggards Thursday, September 24 T-BONE TOM’S

Fronted by Ronald Osborne, Mac Sabbath is at the forefront of the next obvious heavy metal subgenre following death metal, black metal, speed metal, power metal and doom metal, which is drive-thru metal. The rest of the band includes Slayer Mac Cheeze (Mayor McCheese), Grimalice (Grimace) and Cat Burglar (Hamburglar). But forget the obvious cheese, because word is, this group is actually really good. Sure the band’s cover of “Iron Man” is rechristened “Frying Pan,” but it is apparently spot-on musically. Considering the chances of another Black Sabbath tour is pretty slim, this may be the closest you are likely to get as the group is credited with mastering the metal giant’s trademark meaty riffing and biting vocals.
