THAT CAPTAIN’S “Miles and Smiles” EP Release Tour is Hitting Home! By Lizzy Parker

Live ‘80s

Local musician, singer-songwriter, captain, and author, Marc Borde and his band, That Captain, are all smiles. The Coastal Texas four-piece has toured across the nation and are happy to be making a hometown stop to play four shows in our area this month as part of their “Miles and Smiles” EP Release Tour.

Fri., March 11 JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE

That Captain consists of Captain Marc Borde (Vocals and Guitar), Matthew Beard (Vocals, Drums/Percussion), Brent Wideman (Bass Guitar and Vocals) and Blake Plsek (Percussion and Banjo). That Captain’s sound combines the styles of reggae and folk music into one up-tempo collaboration with an emphasis on tropical island vibes. The band’s unique style with their captivating folk harmonies has caught the attention of audiences all over the country. After an extended stay in California at a music commune called the Music Pharm, That Captain will be back in our area for a very short time. The band plays in Kemah at Zone 504 on March 4; in Bacliff at Mothers Speakeasy on March 5; in Galveston at the Drunken Monkeyz on March 12; and at Stuttgarden Tavern on March 13. Be sure to catch them while they are home because the band is booked solid and won’t be back in our area for several months once they’re gone. - Continued on Page 34

PREAMBLE LOUNGE & CRAFT HOUSE

Cocktail Revolution Reaches Clear Lake By Lizzy Parker Preamble Lounge and Craft House is the beginning of something never before seen in Clear Lake. By definition, preamble means “a preliminary or preparatory statement; an introduction.” This new speakeasy-inspired lounge will introduce our area to Signature Craft Cocktails in an intimate setting. Long ago, the concept of the American Dream sprang to life inside drinking establishments. Preamble embodies this thought-out concept. Owner and designer of Preamble, Joshua Jones, has brought this prohibition-style, post-modern cocktail bar to life bringing about a “cocktail revolution.” Jones declared Preamble’s motto to be “We the people, have a right to superior cocktails,” and that is exactly what Preamble is out to accomplish. Preamble will showcase the Artistry of the Craft Cocktail, where creating fresh and delicious beverages becomes a spectacle to be viewed as performance art from the first pour.

any attire is welcome), and delight in more than just the exquisite decor and mysterious vibe. The bar staff has been expertly trained to entertain guests with their drink-making theatrics. Preamble Signature Cocktails will do more than quench thirst; they will also entertain from start to finish. A few of their Signature Craft Cocktails include several variations of the classic “Old Fashioned” such as their Smoked or Italian Old Fashioned, the New Orleans style “Ramos Gin Fizz,” and also the “Avocado Margarita.” Preamble only uses the highest quality ingredients. This progressive cocktail bar does not use any store-bought mixers; everything is made in house. All of Preamble’s cocktails are made with real fruit or real fruit puree and are free of artificial sugars.

Preamble’s head bartender, Carlo Biddle – often referred to as the “Tippling Chemist” – would like to “create a safe haven” where it’s possible to “forget the outside world.” Preamble would like to take patrons back to Colonial America where communal drinking and “toasting to health and good fortune” was not only a tradition but the norm. Preamble’s vision is to spark a cocktail revolution in the Clear Lake area.

At Preamble, there’s a specialty cocktail for everyone in the crowd. With a wide selection of high-end spirits, infusions, barrel-aged beverages, cocktails on tap and an intriguing happy hour, there is something for every patron and every budget. Happy hour is from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and includes 13 Classic Cocktails ranging from $5 to $7. When it rains at Preamble, they will honor their happy hour prices. Allday happy hour pricing on Mondays makes Preamble the ideal after-work hangout. Happy hour classic cocktails include the Old Fashioned, Moscow Mule, Ramos Gin Fizz, French 75, Champagne cocktail and more.

Dress to impress when visiting Preamble (casual to dressy,

Whiskey drinkers rejoice! Two-and-a-half-inch whiskey spheres will be served daily in whiskey cocktails after happy hour. These ice spheres incredibly reduce the amount of water dilution caused by melted ice and are a great addition to any variation of Old Fashioned on the menu. - Continued on Page 34

Loose Notes Greetings! Tis the season for spring fever, and I trust you are catching yours. Around the horn, our hometown Rockets are still in the mix, everybody’s looking forward to a good year at Astros spring training, crawfish are reported to be very large this year, Super Tuesday is behind us; and we’ve Epicurean Evening @ got tickets to see mutton bustin’ and Kid Rock Space Center Houston at the Rodeo. Like many of you, I was able to get enough of spring cleaning chores done, enjoyed affordable gasoline and took in great samples of what went down around town.

by Andy

Cerebelus @ League City’s Easy Street

EPICUREAN EVENING - A perfect turnout enjoyed this year’s annual event where the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and Space Center Houston pulled off another flawless evening. These people are good! Newcomers this year included Thai Spice and La Poz with great rookie year showings joining many of the fine established eateries in The SCENE. Live music was provided courtesy of Jackie’s Brickhouse and Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack with the duet of Greg Tillman & Doc Saenz and some hot zydeco sounds filling the air. A great time was had by many at this annual signature event! Flickball Championship @ T-bone Tom’s

SUPERBOWL - So the good news is our beloved hometown gets to host Superbowl LI. Frankly, it’d be nicer getting our team into the final game of the year but this works too. Speaking of what’s been working, the annual Flickball Championship went down at T-Bone Tom’s, and was a dandy this year. First place went to Chuck Grassau for nailing a perfect 5 of 5 from what would scale up to be about 80 yards away. A shoot-out for 2nd place between John Beatty and Barry Terrell was in the making before Kemah’s Big Jefe took the high course to share the loot. The prize pot this year was impressive qualifying, this annual event a spot on our yearly calendar. Put it on yours, too! AROUND TOWN - We took in some really good local live music shows during the month of February by performers with a unique sound all of their own and only available in the greater Clear Lake area. - Continued on Page 39

pinned down… and inspired by a wide range of artists and genres, stretching from ’60s rock to Talking Heads to Blue Grass to Brian Eno”. Chatting with Rachel, the Cerebelus schedule is filling out nicely with some really good shows this year with their full band at Kemah’s Rock the Dock and Galveston Pleasure Pier. One thing I enjoy with this band is how at-ease they are collaborating with other artistic eclectic musicians in the region (not the straightforward jammable stuff). This month, we got to hear them with international performing artist Hank Wolfe, whom I suspect is one of this area’s best kept musical secrets. For the past several years, we’ve caught Wolfe playing at some of the smaller area clubs and pondering when he will be rolling out further onto the SCENE. Cerebelus and Hank Wolfe…. Book ‘em…. Book ‘em all… And catch them at Easy Street Lounge...

ON TUESDAYS - Got my signals crossed and had to miss the Queensryche show in February (my bad), but was able to enjoy the evening at Cock-eyed Seagull with Me and Julio, and at

Easy Street Lounge we caught Cerebelus. Me and Julio is a small incarnation of the Michael Stevens Band with Stevens and Pete Me and Julio @ Sanchez on the kit. Cock-eyed Seagull They play like the entire band, an endless unwritten playlist of one song right into another. Stevens is one of those musicians not only in song, but in getting more tones out of his Gibson and Fender without any pedals than anybody I’ve ever heard; and Sanchez smoothly handles whatever transitions are thrown his way – Two master talents! Cerebelus is the eclectic musical duet of Rachel Naomi Walker and Armando Vazquez and this special evening, included Hank Wolfe on the kit. In their own Cerebelus @ words, "Cerebelus League City’s writes and perEasy Street forms soulful R&Boriented songs with a rock/pop edge. From bluesy ballads to punchy aggressive tunes and even some country-western leanings, their sound just can't be

WEDNESDAY - This month we followed up what is likely the hottest thing happening on Wednesday nights, the Punkstar Full Throttle Live Broadcast at Scout Bar. Folks, this is for real... With their recent alliance with Reach Down Radio, the coverage these two local live music promoters have been growing geometrically, which qualifies this as “investment grade.” Got it? In February, we were with a local live audience (along with listeners from around the world) taking in a super cool evening with guest Lisa VonLovelace and musical guests Black Water Mountain and Para Bellum. Both of these band passed the audition in my books not only by displaying passionate energy reflective of immersing oneself into the art of music channeling, but doing so as a tight interwoven collective (aka the entire band) with a “polished” presentation -- a characteristic perhaps too rare in today’s live music. - Continued on Page 37

I’m pretty sure my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt, limited his participation at Scout Bar, but I’m pretty sure if he heard the music that evening, he would given it a “Bravo” performance. Pretty cool for a Wednesday night, yes? Remember bands, not everybody gets a chance to open for national touring groups, and if such a gig is on your list, Scout Bar and the Punkstar Full Throttle Radio show would be one of your possible stepping stones. Which got us to catching up with…. THURSDAY, Part I - We stopped by to see the 4-Barrel Ramblers (Mark Moss, Robert Renton, Shane Gormly) at T-Bone Tom’s in February. The last time we covered this band, they were opening 4-Barrel Ramblers for Kansas who @ T-bone Tom’s was headlining things up the road in Baytown – never a bad thing to have on the resume. Mark Moss is looking great these days on what he calls his Slim Jim diet – and one I

Randy has been busy at it these days, I’ve no idea just how he does it, and had just driven in for the show after recording sessions in Austin earlier in the day for Tony Vega’s upcoming album project. Quite a mouthful to try saying and exhausting simply thinking about the drive… My thoughts? Awesome quality music, cool settings at Katie’s, and on a Thursday of all things.

suspect could be a national top-seller. The 4-Barrel Ramblers was one of the first bands I covered on The SCENE and over the years, they have consistently been a fun and great-sounding band that has been easy and enjoyable to listen to. That, and they always have the knack for getting people to get up and dance which qualifies as Waltones Scene - “Party Ready!!!” @ Katie’s

THURSDAY, Part III - For about the past year, to see a Hamilton Loomis on The SCENE, you would have to catch him at Jackie’s Brickhouse on Thursday nights, which I finally was able to make happen in February. Turns out many of you have been out there, too! Holy, moly! What a crowd!! It had been years since I last took in a Hamilton Loomis show and delighted Hamilton Loomis @ Jackie’s Brickhouse

THURSDAY, Part II - A couple months ago, we covered the Walltones at Katie’s which we enjoyed enjoy to warrant a double take. And so we ventured to the cozy listening room in downtown Bacliff, Katie’s, where the drinks are always cold, the service ever crisp, the music al-

THAT CAPTAIN: Cont. from Page 48 That Captain released “Miles and Smiles” on March 1. The three-song EP can be found on iTunes, Spotify and on their website for digital download. Surfing, traveling across the country, living in California, touring by sailboat, writing a book, working hard, romances, and partying have influenced members of That Captain to create this original collection of songs for “Miles and Smiles.” The first track on the EP is called “The Blessing.” This track was written in and about Houston. The band decided to shoot their new music video in the city the song is about. In the video, watch Marc and the guys explore and skateboard around Houston. The video touches on relationship issues and features the group playing an outdoor set with very colorful Houston street art as the backdrop. Check out Mad Label Media’s YouTube Channel or That Captain’s website at thatcaptain.com to view “The Blessing” music video. The second track is titled “Vamos.” This psychedelic song is

about surfing and has a feel-good, beach vibe. The final track, “Miles and Smiles,” was written in California. This song is about That Captain’s extensive adventures touring the country. The band has wild stories about their travels such as sleeping in ditches, hopping trains and living at the Music Pharm. Support these local musicians by purchasing “Miles and Smiles” on iTunes for only $2.97. Pick up the EP on iTunes, hit one of their March shows and transform an evening into a Caribbean Beach getaway. As That Captain would say on tour, “another day, another night...” the “trail of paradise” leads them home. Don’t miss their local shows or a chance to hear That Captain’s tour stories before they’re gone again. ------------------------------------------------------

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 35 TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE - Perhaps one of the most diverse cross cutting representation of humanity showed up in reverence on a Friday in February for an evening with rock legend, Ace Frehley and his Space Invader band. The meet and greet line for this real life guitar hero was exceptionally long this evening and in a good way with vinyl albums and guitars galore waiting to be autographed. The stage that night was very crisp and tidy for the frenzy to happy yet crammed pack with the most Marshall amps I’ve “ever” seen at Scout Bar. The first three songs (Toys, Gimme a Feeling, & Rocket Ride) of the evening were frenzied out of this world performances for the camera and the entire 18-song show complete with smoking guitar was a treat for all. It seemed to me that the followers of Bronx native Frehley find it easy to appreciate this former roadie for Jimi Hendrix much the same way as the fans of Willie Nelson do, which I found interesting and comforting. Tour Stop Clear Lake - Up front, personal, in your face and only at Scout Bar... - Continued on Page 30

THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 32 OVER THE TOP - Describes the Joe Palermo Benefit at Fatty’s in February. Musicians are notorious donors of their time at charity fundraiser events. When the call is to support a stricken musical Good Guy, the event stands a strong possibility of elevating into a special class called “magical”. And magical it was, from all of you who answered Chris Loper’s rally call, the gathering with people coming in from across the country, to all the auction donors and outrageously generous bidders, the bands (Overdrive, Mechanix, Alpha Dog, Rock Republic, and Six Gun Sound) for playing one inspired set after another on a stage provided by Mike Colby and Sound Sound LLC, the Prime Cookers for preparing delicious BBQ plates for the masses, and for Fatty’s for hosting and no doubt writing out their largest drink donation ever. In short, we ate the food clean, drank the house dry, bought all the merch, bidded over and above, and rocked the house to the bone… Not bad people!!! Now it’s Clear Lake Regional Medical Center turn where Joe continues his fight against Stage 4 Cancer. A victory for Joe by the home team would be incredibly huge. Cheers to all who were a part! IT’S A WRAP - I read in a recent article that news writing in the future stands a good chance of being replaced by a piece of software code that merely links together the 5 W’s and the H. Being one that writes software code, I suppose that would be another ironic way of being displaced, so in the meantime until that happens, spring is upon us, patio season calls, March Madness beckons, St.Patty’s day lies ahead, and it’s time to enjoy the place we call The SCENE. Time is ticking and thanks to those who reached out, sharing your time and stories making the month of February of 2016 a good one for the books. Be well, and we will catch up with you more out there on The SCENE!

LYC YOUTH SAILING: Continued from Page 22 One of the key advantages to learning to sail within a club environment is the continued momentum of the sailing way of life. Valasek adds that, "Sailing also introduces kids to a lifestyle within a strong yachting community that they'll enjoy on into the future." Without the solid framework of successful club routines, many sailors don't continue to practice and spend time on the water. The Youth Sailing Program at Lakewood offers tactical and strategic skills to build top-notch success at the fleet and team racing levels.

2nd Annual Fundraiser “Lost is Not Alone”

Saturday, April 2 Noon to 8 PM JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE

Back on shore to grab a quick slice of pizza, most of the kids head straight for their cell phones. Break time’s almost up and there won’t be any texting for at least a few more hours. But then again, who’s got texting on their mind in a 40-milean-hour wind? When you're out on the water and get to go really, really fast, it’s already been a totally awesome day.

Topping out at over 100 sailors, Lakewood's Youth Sailing Program trains athletes who sail in opti class, laser class, and even the Olympic-grade 470 class. Spring Camp Gets Lakewood Youth Out of the Digital World and Into the Sailing World! In an age where digital devices constantly compete for our attention, youth sailors prove themselves a rare breed. Spring training is gearing up at Lakewood, and kids throughout Clear Lake are ditching their cell phones for wetsuits and sailboats. Move over seafarers. Sailing's not just your father's sport anymore. Boys and girls as young as first graders are ready to unplug and set sail. For many youth sailors, racing has raised a bright and shiny bar that refuses to go away. Even less competitive kids are consumed by the thrill of the open waves. From age six, every newcomer to the world of sailing aspires to two things -- keeping the boat upright and winning a race. Earning a spot on a racing team is an investment that Lakewood's youth sailors are willing to pay. A typical weekend of spring training looks like breakfast on the go without even hitting the snooze button. Waking before sunrise, sailors gearup and head to the club for a full day of practice on the water. One of the biggest challenges facing a first-time racer is finding the stamina to just get out and compete. Not only do racers need coaching on strategy and technique. Motivation is one of the key components of getting any racer to plunge in at full-throttle. Lakewood's Sailing Director, Marek Valasek, knows a thing or two about motivating others to personal mastery. After winning the National Championship for his home country Slovakia a total of seven times, Valasek decided to up-anchor and move to the United States. His one burning goal? To compete in the Finn class sailing events at the summer Olympics. Overcoming the tremendous odds of adapting to an entirely new environment, Valasek settled in the southeast and began training for the Olympics. On the day of the event in 1996, Valasek's life was forever changed. Competing with Olympic-caliber sailors in Atlanta tested Valasek. It challenged his skills and raised his standards for personal mastery in sailing -- a level of excellence that's he's eager to pass on to everyone he trains. Valasek remarks that, "Kids who sail tend to learn how to solve problems on their own, oper-

Even in heavy winds and biting temperatures, Lakewood's youth sailors tend to be all-in. Not even gusts up to 40mph interfere with practice. Training goes on. For these kids, it's just another awesome day out on the water. I got to catch up with a few racers in the opti class on a particularly blustery day in November. I asked them if they were freezing, and they said no.

"We've been out in the freezing cold before. Today we were sailing in gusty waves. The wind out there is high. But we get to go really, really fast!"

And the reward for training under droll weather conditions? Mastering your racing skills, and finally -- winning a race. Nothing spurs a youth sailor to victory like the taste of their first win. One of the junior racers shared what it's like to actually win a competition. "Last year, I won a race in the Cold Front Series. I didn't say anything about it at school. But I called my Grandma. She was pretty impressed. She took me out to Kenny & Ziggy's for a corned beef sandwich." As the stakes get higher, Lakewood's high school sailors fix their sights on slightly more prestigious prizes. Competing in the 2016 Orange Bowl Regatta, Lakewood's youth team brought home the highly-coveted first-place trophies in both laser and 420 classes. Winning big only gives rising sailors a taste for a boating lifestyle they can't get enough of. - Continued on Page 23

SANDRA WILLIAMS Continued From Page 19 Williams shared that she learned about egg art shows and guilds around the world with several located in Texas including San Antonio and Houston. When she later moved to the Houston area, she became a member of their guild. Williams even presided as president during three different terms. She said she also belonged to the Texas Egg Art Guild and International Egg Art Guild and participated in many shows. Williams’ International Best in Show piece is on display at her shop. Though she creates remarkable egg art in many stunning styles, Williams informed that she is well known for her particular technique of cutting egg shells. She referred to her style as “airy.” Williams revealed, “The more I take away from an egg while still leaving it in tact the more I like it.” She said she is most often asked, “How do you cut those eggs?” Williams disclosed

that she uses a dental drill “because a Dremel drill can’t cut through most egg shells.” Cutting takes time and patience affirmed Williams. “One wrong cut and it will break apart,” she admitted. Williams said she free-hands all her designs even the extremely detailed filigree. “It typically takes one week to mark and one week to cut,” stated Williams. She also told about the many different eggs used such as ostrich, goose, rhea, duck, guinea, and the dark green emu egg. Williams explained ostrich eggs are as hard as teeth and must be scored three times to make the final cut. She said they are heavy and feel like glass. “The sheen usually is pretty enough that paint is not necessary,” she added. When working with egg shells, Williams advised the dust is toxic and could cause salmonella. She executes the elaborate hand cutting in an enclosed box to protect herself from the dust. Williams creates exceptional special orders for all occasions from engagement ring

boxes to one-of-a-kind collector pieces containing moving parts and lights. She designs egg art for kings, queens, presidents, governors, and people all over the world. Williams said the cost depends on time, material, size, mechanical movement, music, and lighting. “Prices range from $35 to $5,000 depending on how ornate,” she stated. Williams is currently working on a Cinderella coach which could sell for as much as $10,000. “You become quite attached, and it makes it hard to price,” Williams confessed. She said she usually lets an egg sit in her shop for a few weeks or even a few months to get the proper perspective in order to put a price on it. Williams did acknowledge some projects she just can’t let go of. You can view Williams’ favorite egg art pieces and more of her collection at Egquisite Egg Shells 505 Bradford, Ste. Featured Artist: Sandra William

Sandra Williams discovered the art of egg shells by accident; an unfortunate accident leaving both her ankles broken and her wheelchair-bound during recovery. At the time, Williams had owned a beauty salon in San Antonio for 25 years and told she was used to being very busy. Williams’ husband took her to an art convention where she saw some beautifully decorated egg shells made by a local artist. “I thought, I can do that,” said Williams. She took classes from the same artist to learn the basics. It did not take long for Williams to excel at egg shells. She professed, “I took the art form to a higher level.” Indeed, her intricate egg art is extraordinary and her Eg-quisite Egg Shells shop has been open now for over 25 years. - Continued on Page 21
