GINGER’S is baaaaaack!!! By Mark Evangelista For Ginger Grutzius, she is poised to be all things to all people who want to have a good time in San Leon. Her namesake Ginger’s Sports Bar (located at 2007 Bayshore Drive) offers as multiple options to match as many moods and vibes you can conjure up. “I’ve always been a visionary,” Ginger said. “My mom (Deloris Grutzius-Drewing) told me to always set my mind that I can do it, and make a plan and do it. For someone who lost both her business and home to Hurricane Ike, the recovery that is both personal and financial continues to surge. Walk in and see what starts off as a comfortable sports bar and fans out into a poker room or private event room, outdoor stage, a pergola for wedding ceremonies, an outdoor bar and a cozy fireplace inside or a gas-powered fire pit outside. “After the storm, I was angry. Everything around me reminded

me of loss: money and my life savings, my business,” she said. “I had lost it all.”

“Everything seemed to stop,” Ginger recalled. “Then I realized that my mom and I could help my community. I saw and really looked at my personal life.

A trip to Corpus Christi, brought her to the top of a hotel overlooking the Gulf. As she stood close to the edge with the Gulf breeze swirling around her, she wanted the pain to end. Jumping would take away the pain. Or would it?

Engaged four times (to a pilot, a retail developer, a CPA and a surgeon) but never married, Ginger learned that she was not cut out to be an accessory for a man who had everything and wanted nothing more than arm candy. “They wanted to own me,” she said. “I wanted to be more than a possession and a wife. My calling was to be in business for myself.” The result of her endeavor is more than a sports bar. Sure, Ginger’s has flat-screen TVs in view from every direction to cheer your favorite team, but there is also an intimate, indoor stage for open mic nights (Wednesdays).

Happy New Year! Hope you good people out there were able to succeed in slowing your world down long enough to enjoy the holiday season, pay your Auld Lang Syne respects to those left behind, and get your cheer on! If not with family & friends, then hopefully within yourself. Great job to all of you who hosted out-of-town guests and took them out and about on the SCENE last month! We’ve got a good thing going on in these parts and sharing our little jewel by the water with others is fitting! Speaking of fitting… lots of cool things went down last month. Let’s give it a quick run down….

This year’s pub crawl organizers changed it up Alvin and the and had the Slickpunks masses of Merry @ Zone 504 Mongers scatter in laissez faire fashion, and so Abel Salazar @ we took over Amadeus the town. From Zone 504 where we caught Alvin and the Slickpunks, to Amadeus with long time friend of the SCENE Abel Salazar on the stage, Bakkhus Taverna and JP’s Upper Deck were on the itinerary that night with a steady night of fun and cheer had by all before returning to T-Bone’s for the end-ofevent festivities. Check out the Kemah Krewe du Lac ad in this issue for this year’s schedule of events!

ANNUAL KREWE DU LAC TOY DRIVE AND PUB CRAWL - This annual Kemah Lighthouse District tradition once again started out at T-Bone Tom’s – perhaps the only place large enough to host this massive, ever-growing gathering. Looking things over, the toys collected this year were plentiful and no doubt brought plenty of joy to the VIPs in this world – our little people. Well done! Rat Ranch was in the house for their first-time appearance at T-Bone Tom’s. By the end of the night, these guys won over

SIGNATURE SOUND - While at T-Bone Tom’s, we scored a copy of the self-titled EP, “Rat Ranch,” according to the band, “This album is a blend of country-rock that can be described as 'A Sound of Texas' and available for purchase at the shows, or can be downloaded through the band’s website (www. ratranch.com).“ - Continued on Page 37

The principal songwriters are Brett Axelson and Kent Newman and with Madigan and Valdez as solid anchors, the entire performance is a tight mix of totally upbeat tunes that would not be possible with merely a throwdown of studio musician fill-ins. That a rock & roll cover band would put forth a country-folk compilation at first blush seems dubious, but after listening to this album about 14 times while working on this month’s article, I found this album addictive, full of high-energy and upbeat hooks, altogether with a gritty sound that seems a lot like Texas. Go figure! Better yet – and I believe time will prove me correct on this one – this album is packed with a unique sound that I’m sure not just any band can play and has a signature quality where I believe listeners will say, “That’s Rat Ranch!” Engineered and mixed by Ernie Wells at Eighth Note Productions, these guys went the extra mile for a quality sound with mastering performed by Jerry Tubb at Terra Nova Digital Studio out of Austin. Rat Ranch is no stranger on the Houston cover band tour. This compilation, I believe, could be their ticket to the circuit of larger regional festivals. More please! WILL PLAY FOR SCOOTCH - As you may or may not know, our good friend and brother Matt “Scootch” Appleby was involved in a terrible accident while on his way to a bike meet in Louisiana. Serious injuries, medical airlifts, expensive surgery, and another stay in the hospital are all going to add up to some hefty medical bills. To help ease the unexpected financial burden, a gathering was had at Ronnie’s Ice House, that included drinks, food, auctions, and music from Card-Cas-

GINGER’S: Continued from Page 43 On Saturdays, local live bands or karaoke are on tap, in addition to 24 draft beers. On Fridays, Ginger’s transforms into a hip, trendy dance club with club mix provided by the DJs of South Beat Music. Just off the main bar area, the Winchester Room offers a smoke-free space for special events and private dining with its signature chandelier made of the classic rifle. When the room isn’t reserved, Texas Hold ’em is the game on the weekends – if you’ve got the right poker face. Most places only have one menu, but Ginger’s comes at you with three menus: cocktails, shots and food & wine. The grub is perfect when the game is on. The Grand Slam Burger should satisfy that urge for savory choice Angus beef with 1/3pound juicy patty, smoky bacon and creamy avocado. The bun is so big, you’ll have to use the steak knife to cut this monster in half! Ginger is right where she wants to be. “San Leon is a rising star and so is Ginger’s,” she said. It’s worth noting, there is more to Ginger than just Ginger’s Sports Bar… but that is another story.

ried sound cleanly all the way out to the apartments over by the Academy along I-45, where residents called in the sound police. Pretty impressive I would say, as did the Webster police officer who came out to have the band “turn it down.” For the record, the band was a young and energetic group calling themselves Oddiz (Angel - Vocals, Zac - Bass, Trey - Drums, Allen - Guitar) from Pasadena doing exactly what they love, playing music. Well done!

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 35 Good for the soul indeed! Throughout the year, the Swamp Shack has had a great variety of live music to serenade diners. I sat thinking that Starr & Shannon could be considered the house band. PATIO SEASON AND THE SOUND POLICE - In Europe there are what’s known as sound police – people carrying sound meters and clamping down on music makers exceeding 85 decibels, the range most modern music is getting started. Saw an interesting one the other day in the “you had to be there category” where the folks at Scout Bar were having an afternoon patio show out in their courtyard patio. Turns out the acoustics were exactly right and car-

TOURSTOP CLEAR LAKE - The holiday season kept us pretty busy in December, but we were able to make it to Scout Bar to catch Platinum-selling Drowning Pool. The performance was utmost and the fan turnout were both supportive and eager. IT’S A WRAP - Decembers always go by too quickly in my book, and this year was no exception. 2015 was truly intense for many, and throughout the year, I enjoyed taking time to chat with many of you out there. We’ve got a lot of really thoughtful people out there and wish you the best of health and wealth in the year 2016. Despite being an election year, we are all neighbors and share a common place here close to the water in a place we like to call The SCENE. Remember, we’ve had both aerospace and oil crash on us, yet afterwards, this region was able to come back stronger and more vibrant than ever. We get to do that again. Throughout, we always had great live music, fun places to gather, toast and feast among friends and family. Best I can tell, we still do. And so with that, we’ll see you out there!

The World of Cosplay By Avelina Casanova For most, the words “costume play” – or “cosplay” – may generally be associated with Halloween, but for others cosplay is a term used year round. Cosplay is an art form where people (adults) can creatively express an alter ego – typically a character from television, film or books. The art of cosplay involves taking a character, creating an original costume and using one’s creativity to fully bring the character to real life. It’s an art that involves more than just dressing up. The costumes take time and sometimes great detail to prepare. “You have to do your research and know the references for every character you choose to portray. If someone walks up to you and starts talking to you, they are not coming to talk to you, they are wanting to talk to the character you are portraying, so you have to know your stuff,” said Nassau Bay resident Elle Stuehrk. “My favorite part of preparing my character is figuring how I will portray their personality in real life situations,” said Stuehrk, who has enjoyed embodying characters such as Katniss Everdeen, Black Canary and Tank Girl. It’s simple to reenact situations a character may have already experienced on TV, but part of cosplay means taking your character to another level. There are local and national cosplay conventions all year round where thousands of people who share the same interest gather together to take part in this artistic world. Stuehrk has her very own Facebook page dedicated to her passion for Cosplay, Modeling, Dance and Choreography that can be found under AM Productions. She has cosplayed as characters such as Katniss Everdeen, Black Canary, Tank Girl, Dutchess Nukem and Jayne Cobb and attended more than 20 cosplay conventions.

Fiterman Sports Group:

The FITERMAN SPORTS GROUP store in the new Baybrook Mall outdoor expansion is located in Section A (A103) across from Forever 21 & ZARA.

Continued From Page 16 players for the Texans. I invested in another signing, and it had a snowball effect."

“I make sports heroes accessible to their fans and the local community,” Fiterman said. "And that is part of the plan for this new store. Not only is it a retail store with exciting and rare memorabilia, but a place where we can host events and bring in all these big names. People may see them on TV and collect their stuff, but we want to offer the opportunity to meet these legends. Eventually, we plan to host these unique events many times a month."

Another athlete Fiterman credits with really helping him grow the business is former Oiler running back and NFL Hall-of-Famer Earl Campbell. "Working with a football icon and Texas Legend such as Earl Campbell really put me on the map immediately in this industry and helped build my brand," Fiterman explained. "He was really the first big guy I landed and the opportunity he gave me years ago and the awesome friendship that we have established since then is responsible for taking my company to another level. In Texas, there is nothing bigger than football; and in Texas Football, there is nothing bigger than Earl Campbell. He will be making his first appearance at the store very soon."

Despite being the only participant in Baybrook's new expansion that is opening a first location and surrounded by wellknown and luxury brands, Fiterman was able to close this deal like so many others and believes opening the store at this location was a "no brainer." "First, it is the mall I grew up in." Fiterman said. "I grew up in this area and always shopped at Baybrook Mall. The surrounding community is growing, and I just feel there is no better location for our first store. The foot traffic is there, I like the direction Baybrook is going with the higher-end stores and restaurants, and it is the absolute perfect location for us. Plus, I consider the opportunity to expand and grow in this community an additional blessing."

Fiterman's limited edition, triple-signed “Houston #34s” print back in 2011 featuring Earl Campbell (Houston Oilers #34), Nolan Ryan (Houston Astros #34) and Hakeem Olajuwon (Houston Rockets #34) was another project that put his company on the memorabilia map. “Ryan Fiterman is the first and only person to represent these three guys together for a multi-signed piece,” explained Texas Sports Hall of Fame artist Robert Hurst. “I applaud him for corralling the three greatest players in Houston history and making them available like this.”

A basketball player while at Deer Park High School, Fiterman was manager of the men's basketball team while in school at the University of Houston and then spent two years as a scout for the Houston Rockets. His original plan was to become a sports agent, but he had a change of heart which led to the launch of Fiterman Sports Group. Fiterman admits he has had many blessings along the way, including landing Rocket Tracy McGrady as his first client. “McGrady hadn’t done an autograph signing in about 12 years,” Fiterman said. “I told him what I was doing, starting my own marketing and memorabilia firm. He was comfortable with me because we would see each other several times a day when I worked for the Rockets. So we came up with a number that worked for both of us, and it really put me on the map right away because he was a superstar who hadn’t done a signing for so long. It was a great boost to start things off, and it was very successful. I sold out before I even did the signing. From there, I just started calling on the contacts I had, including

LAKEWOOD YACHT CLUB YOUTH SAILORS STAY ACTIVE LOCALLY & INTERNATIONALLY

Sailing Calendar

COLD FRONT SERIES Lakewood Yacht Club once again is proudly hosting the annual Cold Front Series. Open to youth sailors in all listed classes, the winter series of three monthly races raises the bar for competitive racing in the youth sailing world. Racers 19 and younger will be competing for the coveted claim to the Lakewood Seahorse Trophy. Housed at the club in a place of prominence, the trophy represents mastery of sailing proficiency and tactical skills. From the age of 6, Lakewood's youth sailors train rigorously for eligibility to race. Even for those with non-competitive tendencies, training exacts a reinvention of seamanship standards that positions youth sailors for a competitive edge. Seven-time Slovakian National Championship winner Marek Valasek instills a drive for excellence in every youth racer that he trains. A former Olympic sailing competitor, Valasek incorporates tactical and strategic skills into the Youth Sailing Program as Lakewood's Sailing Director. "Kids who sail tend to learn how to solve problems on their own, operate without close supervision, and get accountable for their actions." Youth sailors train with a variety of boat classes for the Cold Front Series. The Optimist (Opti), a small, single-handed dinghy, is best suited for the younger sailors. Lasers are better suited for skilled sailors. And 420s and FJs are larger boats for a crew of two.

Each event in the Cold Front Series will consist of six races. The Opti class in the beginner and intermediate fleets will race on the same line. Laser, 420, and FJ classes for more advanced sailors will race on a separate line. Each class will be scored separately. The series began in December. The second race of the series is scheduled for January 9, 2016, followed by the third and final race, which will take place in February.

2015 ORANGE BOWL INTERNATIONAL YOUTH REGATTA Youth sailors from Lakewood Yacht Club joined others from around the globe when they converged on South Florida for the 69th annual Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta (OBIYR) late last month. The four-day event was the largest youth regatta in the U.S. attracting more than 675 competitors from 27 states and 23 countries. The local area was well represented with sailors from Lakewood Yacht Club, Houston Yacht Club and Texas Corinthian Yacht Club all placing and led by an impressive first place finish by Lakewood’s Asher Zittrer.

The Cemetery Club Provides Laughs Beginning January 22 Laughs are starting the New Year with the comedy production of The Cemetery Club at Pasadena Little Theatre. It opens January 22 and runs through February 7. This dramatic comedy is by Ivan Menchell and is directed by Jada August. The story revolves around three Jewish widows that meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husband's graves. Ida is sweet-tempered and ready to begin a new life; Lucille is a feisty embodiment of the girl who just wants to have fun; and Doris is priggish and judgmental, particularly when Sam the butcher enters the scene. The cast includes Jo Ann Levine as Ida, Donna Bane as Lucille, Anne Bryant as Doris, Russell Snow as Sam, and Anne Boyd as Mildred. The production crew is Jada August as Director, Julie Owen is the Assistant Director, Stage Managers are Joyce Barnett and Vivian Perkins, and Light Designer is Katie Reed. The Pasadena Little Theatre has been a long running theater receiving numerous awards. Celebrating its 61st year, they kick off the season with a story about love and friendship and how relationships endure conflict and loss through time.

Director Jada August stated, “The Cemetery Club has been compared to the play Steel Magnolias. The characters may not be as colorful but the subject matter is every bit as powerful. At the same time, it has a lighthearted feel about it.” Jada performed the role of Lucille in a production a few years back and it has a special place in her heart for this endearing tale. Jada continues, “My cast is bringing these characters to life in the best way and I am so very happy to have the opportunity to bring this production to Pasadena Little Theatre.” Show times on Friday and Saturdays are 8 p.m. and Sundays are 3 p.m. The one Thursday show is February 4 at 8 p.m. The box office opens one hour prior to curtain. Tickets can be purchased at the box office, in the theater or online. Adults are $15; seniors and students are $12; and $12 for group sales with 10 to 24; and 25 or more are $10 each. Call 713-9411PLT (1758) to order tickets.

You’ve Changed Your Diet. You’ve Changed Your Lifestyle.

The theater also offers a ‘Buy the House’ option, where a group can hold a fundraiser or reward employees with a private showing starting at $600 for plays and $700 for musicals. For an additional fee the rehearsal hall can be included for a catered dinner before the show.

Her paintings are striking and fearless. Brimming with brilliant color and hidden meanings. Her pieces evoke emotions and inspire the imagination. Carmichael’s own inspiration comes from a multitude of sources. She stated, “Dramatic skies, amazing weather events, geological treasures, and fantastic landscapes highlight much of my expressionist work.” She disclosed love is a recurring theme.

Featured Artist: Holly Carmichael

EXPRESSIONIST

Born to a family chock-full of artists, Holly Carmichael has been drawing since she was a kid. Her first and only art class wasn’t until college. The class taught in acrylic, and Carmichael said she liked the medium and “stuck with it.” She told of experimenting and using other mediums such as oil paints, but Carmichael admitted she’s just too impatient for it. She informed, “Oils have to cure. Acrylic dries very fast.” Though Carmichael explained that acrylic has its own challenges as well due to fast drying. “You need to use several layers to get what you want,” she said. She also likes how acrylic doesn’t fade as fast as watercolor and gives different sheens on canvas or paper. Carmichael considers herself an expressionist. She visited many galleries when she first started painting and saw little color. She said, “I decided there needed to be some bang in the world and make it pop.” Expressionism is typically based more on an artist’s own experience rather than reality. Carmichael defines the style as expressing or exaggerating with bolder shapes and colors. She added, “It’s a symbolic intention from an artist in the form of medium and a thought to convey.” For her own art, she emphasized the work is an expression of something not an illustration. She clarified, “The audience must use deeper thought to interpret; to see more than just a really bright landscape.” Carmichael expressed she uses her love of nature to produce paintings that are “sometimes other-worldly.” - Continued on Page 20

EVERY THURSDAY: FREE Wine Tastings (5-7 p.m.) EVERY FRIDAY / SATURDAY: Live Music (8-11 p.m.) Farpoint Theatre’s first-ever Children's Holiday Revue took place just before Christmas at the Seabrook Community House. The delightful 45-minute revue featured local talent in an array of song and dance, and even had a visit from Santa! This familyfriendly event was generously supported by Mario’s, Neptunes, Tookie's/T-Bone Tom's and the City of Seabrook. A portion of the donations went toward assisting a Seabrook family in need of a little help this Christmas. Haley Rae Tucker directed the two-day children’s camp which hosted 17 local students. "I am especially proud of not only their hard work, but their big hearts," said Tucker. "I love working with kids, and I can't wait until the summer theatre camp, so I can see some of them again! Thanks to everyone who attended, helped, watched, and supported this event! It was truly a Christmas miracle!"

Meet Mike Tyson & Pete Rose at

Fiterman Sports Grand Opening Celebration

F

iterman Sports Group founder Ryan Fiterman is bringing two of the Sunday, January 31, 2016 most talked-about athletes in the history of sports to town on Sunday, January 31, 2016, when Mike Tyson and Pete Rose help celebrate the By John Ennis opening of Fiterman’s store in Baybrook Mall’s new outdoor extension with public appearances. Guests will be able to meet, get autographs and pose for pictures with the two sports legends during the first of what will become many special events hosted at the new Fiterman Sports Group store. But it is hard to imagine many events bigger than this first one. "I've established relationships with many athletes over the past seven years, but I'm blessed that two of the top relationships I've built have been with Pete and especially with Mike," Fiterman explained. "First and foremost, its a privilege to be able to work with them. But to have them in the same place to help me launch my new store is something I never dreamed of and much bigger than what I originally anticipated doing right off the bat. But everything fell into place to have the biggest grand opening event possible and make a statement." Bringing top names to his store is only part of the statement Fiterman will be making. "Not only is it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet not one great – but two greats – but these two guys (Tyson and Rose) have never before been offered for such a reasonable price before at a public autograph signing,"

"Both guys are really awesome with the fans," Fiterman said. "To come into the store and have the opportunity to take a picture with Mike Tyson biting your ear and then get a baseball signed by Pete Rose that includes an apology for betting on baseball is an unbelievable opportunity. Those are two of the craziest, most iconic things to happen in sports. So to come in and get those opportunities in the same day really sets the tone for what we are trying to do at the new store. " Part of the Fiterman Sports success story has been the ability to provide more than just an autograph, but focusing on the relationship between fans and athletes and the lasting memories that often result from their interactions.

Fiterman explained. "So it fits our vision of bringing in legends to this community and making them accessible to the fans while also offering them at prices lower than ever before. We want to earn a fan following and get the community behind us as we try to do things never done in this area before."

Chef Scott is a supporter of numerous charitable organizations and has prepared food to raise money for cancer research, women and children’s shelters, and animal adoptions. Most recently, eVolve Restaurant sponsored a toy drive alongside Toys For Tots at the restaurant. Looking ahead in 2016, his non-profit eVolve Foundation is in the process of exploring local charities to partner with to educate others about nutrition and diet, better managing food wastes, and living a healthier life by choosing good food over fast food.

eVOLVE RESTAURANT

An eVolutionary Dining Experience That Is All About The Food By Rhonda Meredith The concept is simple. eVolve Restaurant, located at 2234 NASA Parkway in Seabrook, is an eVolutionary food-driven dining experience set amidst a beautiful venue that reveals an interior with a minimalist and modern design. One may expect a certain degree of stuffiness that is found at a highend restaurant, but don’t judge this book by its cover. Since opening in September, eVolve Restaurant has presented fine dining in a laid back, casual atmosphere to a welcoming community.

Enjoy WINE DOWN WEDNESDAYS through January Join eVolve Restaurant every Wednesday for discounted selected wines “by the glass,” a half-priced starter menu with a wine bottle purchase, and additional food specials. Explore eVolve Restaurant’s evergrowing wine program as worldwide family-owned wines from Italy, Argentina, and other countries will be featured for tasting.

ence that is the essence of eVolve Restaurant. One may describe this setting as having the flexibility to more simply be called “comfortable fine dining.” This means guests are welcomed from everything to dining with friends outside on the patio (as weather permits) to celebrating a special occasion (big or small). “Or just because it is Wednesday,” said Chef Scott. “Of course, Burger Night on Thursdays is very popular.”

Owner and Executive Chef Adam Scott – an American Culinary Federation certified chef with extensive experience – opted to minimize the dining room’s ambiance thereby allowing guests to focus on the food, service, and overall experi-

Chef Scott has successfully broken down all pretenses from the label of “fine dining” without removing the quality, freshness, and artful presentation of only the best ingredients available for his menu. His kitchen is a direct reflection on his unwavering commitment to quality and freshness. “Other than our made-from-scratch ice creams, I don’t have a frozen product in the building." While the dinner menu eVolves almost weekly based on what the boutique meat markets, farmers, and fresh fish mongers have available, eVolve Restaurant’s lunch and brunch menus are consistent. Chef Scott has described his cooking style as “modern American with worldwide influences.” Be sure to taste the "Texas Pecan-tella" crepes with vanilla berries at the Sunday brunch or the blackened snapper or house Reuben sandwiches at lunch. With so much of their products coming from local sources, eVolve Restaurant truly extends beyond their four walls. The restaurant partners with the community as well, and Chef Scott has developed very strong relationships with his neighbors. “The one thing about the Bay Area is that we look after our own,” he said. - Continued on Page 12
