hank you! As 2012 comes to a close, I want to thank you for inviting us into your home each month with our new online magazine John Eric Home. The reception has been truly amazing and the monthly views and downloads have exceed our wildest expectations. We have been encouraged by your positive feedback and comments and your suggestions for the story ideas sent our way. I’m pleased to share that our family at John Eric Home is growing as we welcome an array of amazing talent to our pages. To begin with, we welcome Robin Fisher as Contributing Editor of our new “Stylist” section. “Stylist” is all about fashion, the hottest trends and one’s own personal style. As one of DC’s most soughtafter image consultants, Robin’s depth of knowledge is second to none and we are excited to see what she can teach and share with us. In this edition, she gives us the must haves for both women and men this holiday season. We are also pleased to welcome as our new Contributing Editors of “Mixology,” Charles Tappen and Luca Giovannini, the dynamic duo behind DC’s hottest new concierge bartending service, Veneráte. Each month, they will give us new signature cocktails and their spin on the classics. We are excited about the four new signature cocktails specifically created for this edition of John Eric Home. These recipes are based on classic cocktails but have been uniquely updated and blended to give a new twist to some of the great standards. Our “Foodie” section is one of our most popular and we hope to expand upon the offerings and cuisine we present each month. To help achieve this goal, we will be welcoming a local chef each month as Guest Contributing Editor. First up is Phillip Blane, executive chef and co-owner of DC’s Unum restaurant in Georgetown. Phillip has given us a great fall menu featuring some amazing dishes to make and enjoy at home. We are also very proud to welcome Krys Melo as Contributing Editor of our “Home Trends” section. Krys is a rising talent in the world of interior design and photography. She is also lead lifestyle blogger at peonyandpeartree.com. Her work has been featured in numerous magazines and newspapers. Krys starts right out of the gate with her take on and suggestions for holiday decorating. I would be remiss and the season would not be complete without highlighting the amazing work done throughout the year by Angela Casey, our Features Editor. Angela has two amazing articles this month. Our feature article, “Winter Activities,” will surely inspire you to go outdoors and have some fun this season; in “Travel,” we head off to Aspen to explore this scenic and beautiful mountain town. Also, I want to thank Hillary Broadwater, the creative director of John Eric Home, who took all the thoughts and concepts in my head and turned John Eric Home into a beautiful reality. Finally, I want to thank LK for his tireless contributions while editing John Eric Home and for his creative spirit which has been seen all year in “Foodie” and “Mixology.” We will continue to expand our editorial content throughout 2013 and look forward to your continued feedback. We wish you, your family and loved ones a very Happy Holiday Season. Best, John Eric Publisher & Principal

Aspen A Mountain Town with a Mighty Spirit

by Angela Casey

| November | December 2012

What is there not to love about Aspen? This idyllic hamlet holds myriad delights. Although small, comprising only 3.5 square miles of real estate, the town’s character is quite large. It mirrors the mighty Rockies, in which Aspen is softly nestled. Visitors from far-and-wide visit the town and imbibe its activities, culture and overall sophistication.

John Eric Home 7

Originally founded as a mining camp during the Colorado Silver Boom, the town was named after the abundance of aspen trees which proliferate the area. While the town boomed during the 1880s, the Panic of 1893 led to its collapse after the silver market declined. Aspen’s fortunes reversed in the mid-20th century when Aspen Mountain was developed into a ski resort and industrialist Walter Paepcke redeveloped the town. Today, it is home to three renowned institutions, two of which Paepcke helped found, that are of international importance - the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Aspen Institute and the Aspen Center for Physics. The Aspen Music Festival and School, established by Paepcke, is rooted in the lofty idea that the duality of art and nature fosters the growth of the human spirit. This guiding principle still informs every aspect of the organization. And, it is from this belief that the “The Aspen Idea” was structured. The Aspen Idea, which is a vision of community, focused on mind, body and spirit, remains important to the cultural dynamic of Aspen today. It is holistic and nature-bound in its approach. Given the town’s reliance on nature, it is only natural that Aspen would strive to be in the forefront of the Green Movement. The city is touted as a green city and is proud of this distinction. The City of Aspen operates two hydroelectric plants - one located at the Ruedi Reservoir and the other at Maroon Creek. Its electric utility purchases wind power from turbines based in Kimball, Nebraska, which accounts for nearly 30% of Aspen’s fuel mix. In addition, a solar panel system helps to meet the domestic demand for hot water and the city’s water department is installing a solar voltaic system on a great electric grid, which is known as the Solar Voltaic Project. Geothermal and hydrogen sources are being explored and are in beginning stages of development. Aspen takes its green initiative, relying on nature, very seriously. Another natural reliance is skiing. With an average of 300 inches of snowfall per year, the area comes alive under a blanket of sparkling, white powder. Whether downhill or cross-country, the charming town is home to some of the best runs and trails in the West if not the world. Swooshing down the slopes of the area can leave you breathless. The mountains offer

a wide variety of skiing opportunities for beginners to experts, for alpine to telemark skiers and snowboarders. Locals prefer Aspen Mountain, while big mountain enthusiasts head to Highlands. Beginners are drawn to Buttermilk, whereas families ski Snowmass. There really isn’t an excuse to not join the fun when visiting Aspen. If it has been some time since your skis have been waxed or you are a novice by nature, Aspen Snowmass offers classes in both skiing and snowboarding. Apres-Ski is an activity which is just as enjoyable in Aspen. The city hosts various venues - fireside lounges, warm and cosy cafes and relaxing winebars - to swap stories from the slopes. It also has a great variety of dining establishments. Syzygy, a restaurant that serves continental cuisine, is casual, yet charming. It boasts extensive wine and cognac lists and offers its patrons live jazz performances. Steakhouse 316 is a superb eatery that famished diners regularly visit after a long day of moguls and halfpipes. As Aspen is family-friendly, numerous restaurants, such as Brunelleschi’s, a favorite pizza place and Hickory House Ribs, cater to those who are on a family break. Shopping in Aspen is a treat as the downtown is full of local boutiques. Chilly from the frosty winter air and in need of a new coat? Try Aspen Fur and Shearling. Need to purchase a unique, local souvenir? The Buffalo Collection offers both leather furniture and accessories. And, Harmony Scott Jewelry Design displays handmade local jewelry by a local artist of that name. Of course, the town is choca-block full of art galleries too. Art is in Aspen’s blood. To find interesting forms, visit Forne and Co., which showcases canvases, sculptures and glass. The Harvey Meadows Gallery focuses on ceramics and works on paper. Lodging in Aspen can be quite special. The city likes to keep things natural and simple. Along with a host of B&Bs, small lodges dot the landscape. The Aspen Mountain Lodge features 38 rooms and is a favorite. Also, the Hotel Jerome is recommended for its relaxed elegance and personalized guest service. Aspen is a wonderful place to visit. It is charm and nature and sophistication and interesting all rolled into one. What is there not to love about Aspen?

ICE SKATING HOT CHOCOLATE WINTER ACTIVITIES

and Enjoying a DC Winter

TASTING

by Angela Casey

Winter is always a fun season in Washington. Cheering (or complaining) about the Redskins. Taking in an exhibit at one of our fine museums, which we sometimes abandon during the warmth of summer. Or watching transplants from the South trying to maneuver their cars through snow covered streets. Of course, this year, we have the added benefit of an inauguration. That always spices things up. The city comes alive in celebrations (regardless of the victor) and dazzles the world with its parade.

John Eric Home 13

But, there is more to Washington in the Winter than football, museums and parties. The calendar is heavy with events for Washingtonians with both time and interest to attend. Not surprisingly, December is full of holiday related activities, such as the lighting of the National Christmas Tree. This annual festivity, although it encourages rush hour chaos, is a local favorite. It is also a national one. Spectators watch both in person and on the news from living room television sets throughout the country, as the President lights the myriad sparkling bulbs on the evergreen. This year, the event is scheduled for December 6th at 5pm. And, several days later, on the Ellipse at 4pm, the first day of Hanukkah is celebrated with the National Hanukkah Menorah being lit. For both, tickets are required. Another favorite event of the season is the Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights. Festively decorated boats light up the sky along the Potomac River. The vessels include 50 powerboats and sailboats. A highlight of the parade is the District’s fireboat, the John Glenn, which spouts water 70 feet into the air. The brightly lit boats are creatively decorated and compete in categories such as “Best in Show,” “Best Thinking Outside the Christmas Box,” and “Hardiest Souls.” If you decide to take in the display, the best place to view

DARK, WHITE AND MILK CHOCOLATES, PEANUT BUTTER, SALTED CARAMEL AND CHIPOTLE INSPIRED CUPS - EVERY PALETTE WILL BE PLEASED. the parade is from the docks of the Alexandria marina. This year, the parade takes place on December 1st and the boats arrive to the waterfront between 6-7 pm. Of course, not all activities require tickets or are annual events. Visiting the ice skating rink at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden provides hours of fun. The rink attracts all ages who don skates and whirl around the oval. Sculptures by Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenberg surround them in their pursuit of a great skate. The rink opens in Mid-November and its hours are Monday-Thursday from 10am-9pm, Friday-Saturday from 10am-11pm and Sunday from 11am-9pm. Entry is $7 for adults, $6 for kids and seniors and skate rentals are $3 per person. January brings delight to those Washingtonians interested in antiques! The Washington Winter Show, held annually on the campus of American University, is a must for antiquarian enthusiasts. The charity antiques show hosts 45 premier dealers from throughout the United States and Europe who offer a wide range of period furnishings, decorative arts, vintage jewelry and ceramics. The theme of this year’s event is The Thrill of the Chase: Antiques of the Sporting Life. In addition, the show hosts a Loan Exhibit titled Sporting Pastimes: Art and Objects of Leisure. This exhibit features American, English and French vintage items from prints to rare books. The show is being held January 11th through the 13th at the Katzen Arts Center. Tickets are $20 per person.

| November | December 2012

If weather permits, and a blanket of snow covers the ground, another fun January activity that gets the family (or visiting friends) out-of-thehouse and into the fresh outdoors is sledding. While Washington may not have a plethora of hills to push tikes down, we do have Rock Creek Park and other locations to train future bobsled champions. Battery Kenble Park on Old Chain Bridge Road and Fort Reno Park at Fort Drive offer great locations to thrill both young and old flying down the terrain, belly laughing all the way. And, afterwards, a trip to CoCo Sala is the perfect way to end the day. This chocolate lounge and boutique offers so many varieties of hot chocolate, it is incredible! Dark, white and milk chocolates, peanut butter, salted caramel and chipotle inspired cups - every palette will be pleased. The Year of the Snake is ushered in on February 10th and that same day a host of activities will take place in Chinatown honoring the event. The annual Chinese New Year Parade will roll down H Street from 2pm5pm and showcase a variety of kung fu demonstrations, live musical entertainment and, of course, the Chinese Dragon Dance. Paired to this event is the Chinatown Lunar New Year Festival, which takes place at the Chinatown Community Cultural Center at 616 H Street, NW from noon to 5pm. Live music and dance performances, traditional calligraphy demonstrations, children’s crafts, poetry readings and film screening are but a few of the activities in which to participate. Celebrating Chinese New Year is a cultural activity enjoyed by many. If you do head to Chinatown for the event, make sure you don’t miss the lighting of the Giant Firecracker at 3:45 - it is a highlight of the celebration. In the middle of February, if you should begin to pine for Spring, head down to the United States Botanic Garden. Located on the grounds of Capitol Hill, a stroll through the greenhouses will leave you energized. Surrounded by the colors and smells of Spring, it reminds us that, that season is not too long away.

unum a special neighborhood restaurant that offers exciting food and drinks, but still feels like home.

Gingered Fuji Apple and Celery Root Soup Cinnamon-Pomegranate Duck Confit Pistachio Baklava with Sugared Figs

Guest Editor, Phillip Blane, Executive Chef, Unum Restaurant Johnwww.unumdc.com Eric Home 25

Gingered Fuji Apple and Celery Root Soup 5 apples, peeled and chopped small 2 lbs. celery root, peeled and chopped small 1 one inch piece of ginger, peeled and chopped small 1 yellow onion, chopped small 1 quart of vegetable stock 1 quart of heavy cream salt & pepper

26

| November | December 2012

In a deep stock pot, melt 3 tablespoons of butter and add onions, ginger, apples and celery root. Stir all until soft – about 10-15 minutes, being careful not to burn anything Add the vegetable stock until everything is covered by about two inches. Cook at a simmer for 30 minutes Add one quart of cream and continue cooking another 30 minutes. Carefully transfer all the contents – do it in batches if necessary—to a blender and blend the soup. (you can also use a handheld blender in the pot). Strain for a velvety smooth consistency, if desired. Check for seasoning and add salt and pepper. If the soup is too thick, add more stock. At the restaurant we garnish the soup with diced, cooked crispy bacon, little cubes of apple, toasted pumpkin seeds and a “gruyere crouton” which is a slice of toasted baguette, a dab of Dijon mustard and a slice of cheese that was put in the oven for a minute or two to melt the cheese.

John Eric Home 27

Cinnamon-Pomegranate Duck Confit 4 raw duck legs – available at specialty markets like Dean & Deluca 4 cups of rendered duck fat – available again at specialty markets like Dean & Deluca 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon salt

28

| November | December 2012

Sprinkle the cinnamon and salt on the duck and let sit for a couple of hours in the refrigerator Melt the duck fat in a pot. Place the duck legs, skin side up, in a casserole dish wide enough so the duck legs can be in a single layer and deep enough to be covered by the fat by two inches. Carefully pour the fat over the legs and transfer the dish into a 300 degree (F) oven for about 3 ½-4 hours. With a cake tester, gently poke the duck. If it goes in easy, it’s done. For a crispier skin, remove the ducks from the fat and cool on a rack in the refrigerator. If you want to cook the duck later, keep it in the fat, which will act as a natural preservative, in the refrigerator. When you are ready to cook the duck for eating, place the legs in a skillet or baking tray into a hot oven, 350 or 400 for 10 minutes. We serve the duck with cous cous (follow packet instructions) that is mixed with preserved lemon (you can use lemon zest), caramelized onions, and diced, fresh black mission figs. Accompanying the cous cous is sautéed kale and a sauce of pomegranate juice…

Pomegranate Sauce Combine a large bottle of POM pomegranate juice with 2 Tablespoons honey, 2 peeled and chopped shallots, 1 Tablespoon red wine vinegar, and 2-3 sprigs of fresh rosemary in a pot and after it comes to a boil, lower the heat to a simmer and then let the sauce reduce by 2/3s. strain and keep warm.

Pistachio Baklava with Sugared Figs

for the Baklava: 1 packet of phyllo dough 3 cups of toasted pistachio nuts 3 Tablespoons ground cinnamon 1 ½ cups melted butter 1 cup sugar 1 cup honey ž cup water 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 cinnamon sticks

30

| November | December 2012

Coarsely chop the nuts and add the ground cinnamon, set aside. Place a sheet of phyllo on a baking tray and brush with melted butter. Continue with another 6 sheets until you have 7 layers in all, coating with butter between each sheet. Spread some of the pistachio/cinnamon mixture on the 7th layer. Continue with another 7 layers in the same way as above until the entire pack of phyllo is used. Slice the baklava into the size or shape desired and bake for 20 minutes in a 350 f oven While the baklava is in the oven, combine the sugar, honey, water, and cinnamon sticks in a pot and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let cool. Pour this syrup over the baklava when it comes out of the oven. When everything is cool, the baklava can be stored in an airtight container, at room temperature for three days. To serve, place a slice of baklava on a place, garnish with fresh cut figs that have been sprinkled with sugar on the cut side and placed under the broiler for about 30 seconds. At unum we also serve pistachio ice cream on the side.

Le Mange Royal A Sweet Smoke Mid-Night Comfort Rold Skov Morning Fizz

Contributing Editors, Luca Giovannini Charles Tappan www.Eric VenerateDc.com John Home 33

LE MANGE ROYAL Sparkling cocktails are some of the best in the holiday season. Smooth and approachable, a great sparkling works as crowd pleaser for a celebratory party or as an enjoyable aperitif before a big holiday dinner. In cocktail tradition, many sparkling drinks receive The Royal title, and with the way this drink utilizes the different abilities of the ever festive grape, it is truly a Great Royal. As a great play off the traditional Champagne Cocktail, the Le Mange Royal is not only quicker to make, but it is able to impart multiple layers of bitter and sweet, finished with the crisp refreshing taste of the prosecco.

34

| November | December 2012

INGREDIENTS 1 Rough Cut Sugar cube 1/2 oz. Cocchi Americano 1 and 1/2 oz. Cognac or Eau da vie 1 dash of Angostura Bitters Prosecco DIRECTIONS In the bottom of an empty champagne flute, place one dried hard sugar cube. Granulated Sugar and even such products as Domino Dots will not work; the rich and dense structure of the Rough Cut cube makes it an essential ingredient. Add the 1 dash of Angostura, and then the 1/2 oz of Cocchi Americano. Then choose either Cognac (for a deeper taste) or Eau Da Vie (for lighter more floral taste) and ad 1 and 1/2 oz of your choice. Top with very cold prosecco, serve and enjoy!

“I drink to make other people more interesting.” — Ernest Hemingway Note: the two versions can be served together during a large party, allowing guests to choose which flavor they enjoy more. The colors of the deeper red Cognac version side by side with the lighter colored Eau Da Vie version match holiday themes and taste terrific!

John Eric Home 35

A SWEET SMOKE This cocktail was designed from the ground up to be enjoyed as a digestif, a drink that can settle your stomach, which is perfect after a big holiday dinner. Both the Ramazzoti Amaro and the Gran Classico are Italian semi sweet and bitter liqueurs that function as disgetifs. The bitterness is balanced out on the front end with the smokiness of the Chivas Regal, and on the back end by the decadence and sweetness of the Cherry Heering (cherry liqueur).

36

| November | December 2012

INGREDIENTS 1 and 1/4 oz. Chivas Regal 1 oz. of Ramazzoti Amaro 1/2 oz. Gran Classico 3/4 oz. Cherry Heering Garnish: Scotch Flambéed Amarena Cherry DIRECTIONS Combine ingredients to a mixing glass and then top off with Ice. Stir the drink approximately 25 times to achieve proper dilution, using a classic julep strainer strain the mixture into the glass. Place skewered cherry over glass and serve. DIRECTIONS FOR FLAMBÉ CHERRY Skewer two Amarena Cherries (soaked in syrup) with a long metal skewer and rest on a metal the measuring cup (allow enough length on hand end of the skewer to where it will not be directly over flame). Then, place approximately 1/2 oz Chivas Regal in the measuring cup (enough for the skewered cherries to be partially submerged). Using a Crème Brule kitchen torch, heat up the bottom of the cup till the scotch begins to bubble. Wave the flame from the torch over the scotch to light the scotch on fire. The result will allow the flames of the scotch to slightly caramelize the sugar in the syrup coating the cherries, and impart some of the smokey flavor for the Chivas Regal. Allow the cherries to continue to Flambé while preparing the drink.

MID-NIGHT COMFORT Hot drinks are always a staple due to the colder weather that accompanies the holiday season. Colds, coughs, and congestion can all be soothed by the properties of the honey, spices, tea, molasses rum, and hot water in the Mid-Night Comfort. The shape of the brandy snifter allows the bouquet of spices to collect within the glass so that upon first sip, the flavors of the drink soothe the nose and throat at the same time. The honey and the white pepper create layers of front end sweetness and back end spice, and the earl grey tea imparts an overall earthy comforting flavor. The Mid Night Comfort is a perfect drink to help prepare for a good night of sleep after a long day.

“Here’s to alcohol, the rose colored glasses of life.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald

DIRECTIONS In a brandy snifter add Gosling’s dark rum, spiced honey syrup and one long lemon twist (using a channel carver and a whole lemon, create a twist approximately 6 inches long). Loop the twist around the inside of the glass. In a fine mess strainer or tea filter place earl grey tea, and hold over the snifter. Pour the hot water over the tea and into the drink. Using a whisk or spoon, stir the ingredients until Johnand Eric Home 3 one consistent texture is achieved. Serve enjoy. John Eric Home 39

ROLD SKOV MORNING FIZZ This drink is adapted from the classic recipe for the Morning Glory Fizz, found in Harry Cradock’s “The Savoy Cocktail Book”. The scotch in the original recipe is changed to Akvavit, to add softness and a woody depth to the drink. Akvavit is traditionally Scandinavian liquor, Aalborg is from Denmark. It is a neutral grain spirit (like Vodka and Gin) that is distilled with the traditional flavors of caraway and other herbs and spices added. The name Rold Skov comes from the second largest forest in Denmark, and also fits with the flavors imparted by the Akvavit and the Absinthe. The richness from the egg white helps to tie all the other flavors together and provide a soothing coat the stomach after a potentially long night of celebration. This is a drink that will definitely help anyone find their way “out of the woods” during a less than pleasant holiday morning.

40

| November | December 2012

INGREDIENTS 1 and 1/2 oz of Aalborg Akvavit 1/2 oz lemon juice 1/2 oz lime juice 1/2 oz simple syrup 1 egg white 2 dashes Absinthe 2 dashes Orange Bitters Soda water Garnish: Orange Twist DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients, except the soda water, into a Boston shaker and NO ICE. Wrap the shaker in a towel and shake (approximately 5 minutes). The process can be sped up with the used of a late frother instead of shaking. Then add ice and shake again (approximately another 5 minutes). Use a Hawthorne strainer to strain the mixture into a tall empty Collins glass. Then add soda water till the glass is full, all while stirring the drink together. Loop the orange twist into the drink and slightly over the side to add color and a citrus nose. Serve and enjoy.

The holiday season is a special time. A time to reflect on the things for which we are grateful, an opportunity to make lasting memories, and a time to end one year and begin a new. The holidays are most known for their traditions and the joyful feelings that accompany them. Here are some tips on how to make your home festive for the holidays.

John Eric Home 49

O

ne of the most iconic symbols of Christmas is the Christmas tree! Christmas doesn’t officially start until the tree is up and shining bright. Color coordinate your holiday theme for a cohesive look that doesn’t overwhelm. Colors like reds, greens, and whites are a classic choice while shimmering tones of gold and silver lend a sense of elegance. Your tree is the perfect place to set the tone of your festive holiday home. Whether you go woodsy or glam, the Christmas tree is the main attraction in your holiday decorating. Everyone has those special milestone ornaments that are used year after year. They become our most treasured heirlooms and collectibles. If your traditional ornaments don’t match your current tree’s theme, don’t fret! Having smaller trees of different themes displayed throughout the other rooms in your home is the perfect way to bring Christmas to every corner. Another creative way to incorporate these ornaments into your holiday decorating is to frame them in shadowboxes and set them next to family photos for the season or use them to create centerpieces by displaying different shapes and sizes in bowls and apothecary jars. Make sure you maintain all of that merriment throughout your home! Continue your tree’s theme at your fireplace. The fireplace mantle and hearth cannot be ignored in seasonal decorating. Always a focal point, your fireplace mantle is the perfect spot to display collections of stockings and holiday cards. Staircases are another area where these items shine! Adorn these parts of your home with fresh evergreen garlands and ribbons.

50

| September 2012

And don’t forget the lights! Who doesn’t think of shimmering beautiful lights at the holidays? We all know Christmas lights are a must-have but candle lights also create an ambiance and have historical roots. Putting candles in the windows of your home is a welcoming gesture dating all the way back to the pioneer days. Display candles in a menorah to bring some of the Hanukkah celebration into your home. Many modern home stores are selling interesting and stylish accessories for the Jewish festival of lights. Did you know scent is the number one memory trigger? Something about the smell of cinnamon and pine immediately evokes a feeling of warmth and Christmas. Your mind wanders to cookies baking in the oven, a freshly cut tree, spiced oranges and the crisp winter air. There are a wide variety of scented candles on the market, but if you want to re-create those scents naturally, try the idea of stovetop potpourris.

52

| November | December 2012

Stovetop potpourris can be prepared on the stove or in a slow cooker by boiling combinations of orange peels, cinnamon sticks, pine clippings, cranberries, vanilla and cloves. These fragrances will permeate your home for hours, leaving your family and guests with a feeling of joy and comfort. These fun and easy tips will have your home feeling merry and bright all season long. We hope you start some of these traditions in your home this year. Happy Holidays!

ROBIN’S

The holiday season has arrived and parties are on everyone’s calendar. It’s never too early to plan your looks to ensure that you don’t experience last minute stress.

Think about what type of impression you want to make and if you have something in your current wardrobe that is appropriate. If you don’t, then it’s time to shop.

Make a list of all of the events that you have scheduled and who will be attending. You always want to make sure you’re appropriate. That is one of the keys to exhibiting amazing style.

Take a look at some of my favorite holiday items that can complete any look:

Her experience has spanned from a Designer Bridge buyer for a major retail department store to an international production manager for private designer labels. Success in retail was all about projecting the style choices that retail shoppers would make. STYLIST

Ladies, the time has definitely arrived for you to bring out the fabulous boots, coats, scarves, and hats that are required to brave the elements.

COATS

It’s very easy to kill a great, styled outfit with a winter coat that is not up to par. You can look like a million bucks, but if you’re covered up in an ill-fitted, poor quality coat, it’s all for naught. This season’s colored coats paired with beautiful printed scarves are the way to go. Choose a color that flatters your skin tone to ensure that your outerwear does not overwhelm you. Another favorite is the military-inspired coats that were all over the runways for fall. Military coats are known for their quality details and superior tailoring. Keep an eye out for those design elements when shopping for one.

1. Kristen Blake Single Breasted Walking Coat, Nordstrom, $198

BOOTS

Boots are another winter staple that a lady cannot ignore. I recommend that you own at least two pairs of winter boots: a tall, shaft boot and a short bootie. The tall boot can be worn with pencil skirts and dresses, while your short bootie looks great when paired with slacks, jeans, and skirts for an updated look.

2. Topshop Peplum Jacket, Nordstrom, $90 3. Ellen Tracy Belted Down Coat, Bloomingdales, Reg $312.00 7

4. Via Spiga Novara Double Breasted Wool Blend Coat , Bloomingdales, $312.00 5. ASOS Kaleidoscope Print Scarf, ASOS.com, $21.14

The key to purchasing a great pair of winter boots is function. Search for boots that are comfortable on your feet. Also, rubber bottoms are your friend on those slick sidewalks that are common with rain and snow. So pay close attention to the materials used to make your boot’s bottom.

6. Pieces Erica Long Scarf, ASOS. com, $28.14 7. Warehouse Leopard Print Scarf, ASOS.com, $38.70 8. Halogen® ‘Variance’ Wool Challis Scarf, Nordstrom, $58.00 6

SCARVES & HATS

9. Paul by Elizabeth and James, Piperlime, $375.00 10. Stuart Weitzman Gran, Zappos, $435.00 11. Ola by Kate Spade New York, Piperlime, $498.00

When it comes to cold-weather outerwear, your individual style is expressed by the scarf and hats you choose to adorn you. When selecting a scarf, choose a color or pattern that appeals to you. Don’t just grab anything--make a statement.

12. Touch Screen Leather Gloves, LORD & TAYLOR, $100.00 Also available, Touch Screen Long Leather Gloves, LORD & TAYLOR, $115.00 5

13. Genie by Eugenia Kim ‘Jordan’ Wool Hat, Nordstrom, $78 14. Contrast Stitch Cloche, Nordstrom, $48.00

STYLIST

Men, it’s time for an update to those winter wardrobes. The truth is simple-- to truly communicate success and confidence, you must update your wardrobe to reflect some of the current trends.

I’m sure that some of you cringed at the word “trends”, but like it or not, they exist. To stay stylish, you will always need to update your current look with a few of them. For the conservative classic type, I recommend taking it slow and purchasing a new suit in a vibrant tone of gray instead of a charcoal grey. Then, pick up a sweater in a hot trendy color like burgundy. Pair either of these items with the classic pieces you already have. 2 The result? An instant update. Black, grays, and browns are always definitely safe to wear in DC. But this season, dare to update your look with a rich color such as a deep teal, muted green, or toasted camel. Another cool thing to do is play 1 with texture; chunky sweaters will keep you warm and update you at the same time.

1. Black Rivet Wool Blend Trench Coat, Nordstrom, $179

Also, don’t forget about the details. A great pair of shoes, a watch, and a quality scarf will keep you looking dapper during the winter months ahead. Given that the department store is not the favorite place for many men, I advise that men should always purchase the best quality that they can afford. This will ensure that their items last as long as possible. Here are a few HOT men’s items sure to jazz up any wardrobe:

2. HUGO ‘Brano’ Double Breasted Wool Blend Peacoat, Nordstrom, $495 3. Air Stanton Chelsea, Cole Haan, $248 4. Allen Edmonds ‘Clifton’ Oxford, Nordstrom, $295 5. Tegel Slim Leather Portfolio, Tumi, $445 7 9
