Welcome “Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” –Henry James

Summer is here, and at John Eric Home we love this season! Toasty temperatures and spending time outside, the perfectly seared hamburger smothered in melted cheese from the backyard grill, the extended periods of sunshine that brighten everyone’s mood. Sometimes, during this season, it does us good to reconnect with our inner child. Having a water balloon fight or lighting a bunch of sparklers or setting up a kid’s pool in the backyard and dipping our toes in. Something about this season just makes everything seem lighter… In this issue of John Eric Home, we celebrate the season in style! Enjoy one of three different recipes for a julep in Mixology, catch up on the hottest fashion trends in Stylist and read up on tips to make the most out of front porch living. HOME TRENDS WHERE STYLE & ELEGANCE MEET

Front Porch LIVING

10

JOHN ERIC HOME

Throughout our lives, we are given much advice. The one word of advice that has always been true is that first impressions count. If we took this advice seriously in business and dating, why wouldn’t we for our homes? What is your front porch saying about you? Your front porch is one of the key elements that contributes to the curb appeal of your home and gives people a first impression, whether they’re driving by or walking up to ring your bell. It is the best place to receive your guests; it creates a sense of community, and, essentially extends an invitation to your home. Plus, when the weather is just right, it can be a great place to relax and enjoy your quiet time.

11

There are many front porch decorating ideas. First, tackle the immediate porch surrounding areas. To prevent your house from sticking out like a sore thumb, simply clean your home’s exterior and tidy up your landscaping around the porch for instant curb appeal. Make sure the attraction matches the character your front porch portrays. Paint is the easiest way to make bold statement choices. While you should consider a neutral for most of the home’s exterior to maximize its value, you can go bolder in your color selection for the front door. Consider your front door a blank canvas. Start by painting your front door with two coats of hi-gloss paint. Cheerful hues of crimson red, canary yellow, cobalt blue and grass green can be dramatic and bold. If your home is on the market, consider shades of grey or ebony. 12

JOHN ERIC HOME

If you are looking to a add a little southern charm to your porch, I suggest painting the porch ceiling. This southern tradition is thought to ward off evil spirits. A few hues that work very well include Benjamin Moore Palladian Blue H-144, Artic Blue 2050-60 and Clear Skies 2054-70. Next, check the hardware and details on your door and porch (knobs, knocker, mails slot, hinges, numbers). Make certain the finish is not peeling or chipping. Do they coordinate well and are they polished properly? Attractive door hardware and accessories can make a great statement for minimal money. When it comes to porch ideas, the thing people seldom think about changing are the actual numbers on their house—most still display the original ones the builder installed! But new numbers can contribute a lot of personality to your front porch with little effort. Lastly,

13

make certain you pick styles that reflect the age of the home and the architecture. Another great idea is to extend your living space by installing appropriate lighting. From the street, passersby see the inviting light at eye level and gain a sense of sanctuary. From inside a home looking out, it’s a satisfying feeling to fill the blank, black space outside. For creating an atmosphere of entertainment and engagement, I recommend installing overhead lights with dimmers or up-lighting around the perimeter of your porch. If you just want to avoid darkness, simply place a lamp on an end table by the door or hang an elegant pendant lantern. When shopping for fixtures, go with oversized pieces since they’ll be seen in proportion to the house and you don’t want them to appear dwarfed. Options include gas lanterns flanking your front door, copper pendant lights hanging from the porch ceiling, or architectural stair lighting. These all add a warm, welcoming glow to your front porch façade. Plants carry a sense of nature from the front yard onto the porch. Eighty percent of your plants should be strong and hardy while twenty percent should be dedicated to bringing color to the space. Try mixing a variety of urns, planters, and containers planted with different colors, textures, and dimensions. If your patio is nearby, continue the same theme with planters and flowerpots there as well. Consider mixing taller plants with ivy and moss spilling over the sides. Bold color combinations such as orange and purple look really great and impactful. Lastly, perch a mix of succulents in planters or baskets on a table or chair to add to the visual interest of the space. Finally, make the front porch a place to linger by adding a comfortable place to sit and enjoy conversation. Depending on how much room you have, porch ideas may include a small bench or two, rocking chairs, or a porch swing. Be sure to add a couple of side tables or garden stools for a place to put your favorite book or a glass of lemonade. The Danish concept of being cozy—is quickly becoming a household term in America. Practicing the art of ‘hygge’ on your porch by starting a morning ritual of enjoying your coffee 14

JOHN ERIC HOME

outside, wrapped in a cashmere throw and people watching, or light candles and come out at night in your favorite slippers to sit on the porch and star gaze. Good Feng Shui also goes hand in hand with hygge. Try adding an outdoor mirror which offers a multiplying effect for your plants, making your front-of-house retreat seem even more lush. Exterior mirrors are also said to bounce back the cacophony of the street to maintain the serenity of the space. Lastly, add or layer rugs as a way to brighten up your front porch. It compliments patio furniture and feels great on your bare feet. Textured rugs pull the entire look together and also is a great way to hide any scruffs or scratches your porch might have. Don’t forget the clean and neat welcome mat. Not only does it look crisp, it helps to brush dirt from your shoes as you step into your house. A small investment of time and money can go a long way in adding curb appeal as well as increasing your living space. There is no time like the present to begin!

Weekend CAMPING

16

JOHN ERIC HOME

Recently, many more Americans are discovering the great outdoors. As we stayed inside, the importance of outdoor space – balcony space on a condominium, a patio off a townhouse, or a backyard in a single-family home – became evident. Now that we can leave our homes with the proper precautions, this desire to be outside has only increased. Whether it is in enjoying a simple walk, hiking along a trail or taking on a long bike ride – nature’s beauty has become edifying. In our area, we have wonderful options in which to indulge. The Custis Trail. The banks of the Potomac. The National Mall. Great Falls Park. Each is different and offers different vistas to appreciate. Camping has become a favorite new activity, and there are many camping areas to choose from. In Virginia, one of the most favored is the Shenandoah National Park. It offers over 200,000 acres to explore. With a permit, you can “backcountry camp”, which means that you can set up a site wherever you wish. In Maryland, Cunningham Falls State Park, in the Catoctin Mountains, is just an hour’s drive from the city. They offer fully equipped camper cabins along with 21 basic, tented campsites. If you decide that you want to start a campfire, see the stars and breathe in the fresh air, they are two great places to pitch your tent.

THE BEST OF

BOTH WORLDS How the Anthony Wilder Team Designed and Built a Multi-Functional, Indoor-Outdoor Gathering Space By Sherry Moeller Photos by John Cole

The owners of this suburban Maryland home wanted to create a multifunctional, indoor-outdoor space that was both sophisticated and uniquely modern. They enlisted the talented team at Anthony Wilder Design/Build to come up with creative solutions for everything on their wish list.

THE CHALLENGES While the idea of an all-season room was enticing, the added expenses of insulating, plus heating and cooling the space were prohibitive. Instead, the owners opted for a three-season, indoor-outdoor room that incorporates technology that makes it an almost year-round space. The owners also requested a dedicated grilling area, a uniquely modern yet sophisticated design, and a solution for the sporting equipment that took up too much space on the patio below.

19

20

JOHN ERIC HOME

THE INNOVATIONS The Anthony Wilder team presented a contemporary design with an industrial feel, enhanced by a functioning garage door that separates the three-season room from the open deck. The garage door introduced both design and construction challenges, including how to align all the elements in the room, from the ceiling fans to the beams to the windows. While adding support and scale to the space, the wood beams, which were painted to look like steel, also stored the electrical, which saved on costs. Another cost-saving measure was using yellow pine pressure-treated wood, stained to match the cedar railings, for the deck finish.

21

22

JOHN ERIC HOME

23

24

JOHN ERIC HOME

THE SOLUTIONS To extend the use of the three-season room, the design team incorporated removable glass and screen panels including powered screens for the garage door, as well as ceiling fans and a heated tile floor. Many of the elements can be operated remotely via a mobile device. To avoid having to relocate gas and electrical utilities from under the kitchen window, Anthony Wilder created a moveable bench that both conceals and provides access to these elements. In addition, since the bar is susceptible to the weather, the team used marine-grade exterior plywood to create the cabinet. A gas firepit in the outside portion, as well as a covered grilling station with range hood and gas line offer additional amenities.

THE RESULTS The multi-functional, indoor-outdoor space not only provides plenty of space for entertaining, but also presents a sophisticated look, whether the garage door is open or shut. Lattice hides the utilities and blends with the landscaping, while step lighting and LED strips illuminate the deck at night and low-maintenance cable rails provide unobstructed views of the property. Also, the sports equipment was moved to a lower landing, out of sight, but still accessible.

CRESPINA, ITALY This small Italian village – not much more than a crossroad really – is the perfect Tuscan location to enjoy La Dulce Vita. A small bar, a perfect pizzeria, and most importantly the dazzling countryside invites you to slow down, breathe and enjoy. Its proximity to Florence, Pisa and Livorno make it a great spot to use as a base as well. PUNTARENAS, COSTA RICA With miles of tropical beaches, grand adventures, the wonders of nature and amazing culture, we are not surprised that this beautiful locale made the list. A wet and rainy climate allows for greater biodiversity in the beaches and hills next to the coast and the region’s main attractions happen to be its coast and protected wilderness areas. MYKONOS, GREECE If the mention of Mykonos doesn’t immediately bring to mind bright white buildings, turquoise skies, the azure sea and golden sandy beaches, let us introduce you to this fabulous place. The most popular Greek Island in the Aegean Sea attracts a diverse crowd that thrives on its sophisticated beach town vibe and stylish nightlife. During the day some privacy can be had in the more secluded north beaches. JACMEL, HAITI Sheltered by a beautiful 3km-wide bay, the old port of Jacmel is one of the most friendly and tranquil towns in Haiti, and host to one of its best Carnivals. It also has one of the most vibrant art scenes on the island. MONTREUX, SWITZERLAND From Lake Geneva to mountains to vineyards, the Montreux Riviera offers a postcard landscape. It’s an authentic piece of paradise that has attracted many artists, writers and travelers in search of beauty and tranquility. It’s no surprise that Charlie Chaplin chose to spend his last 25 years on the hills of Vevey. PARO, BHUTAN Often called “Shangri-La,” Bhutan is no ordinary place. It is the last great Himalayan kingdom, shrouded in mystery and magic. Foreign visitors famously pay a minimum tariff of US$250 per day, making it seem like one of the world’s more expensive destinations. However, this fee is allinclusive – accommodation, food, transport, and an official guide are all provided.

GAZPACHO INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 pounds vine-ripened tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped Tomato juice 1 cup cucumber, peeled, seeded and chopped 1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper 1/2 cup chopped red onion 1 small jalapeno, seeded and minced 1 medium garlic clove, minced 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 lime, juiced 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1/2 teaspoon toasted, ground cumin 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons fresh basil leaves, chiffonade DIRECTIONS Fill a 6-quart pot halfway full of water, set over high heat and bring to a boil. Make an X with a paring knife on the bottom of the tomatoes. Drop the tomatoes into the boiling water for 15 seconds, remove and transfer to an ice bath and allow to cool until able to handle, approximately 1 minute. Remove and pat dry. Peel, core and seed the tomatoes. When seeding the tomatoes, place the seeds and pulp into a fine mesh strainer set over a bowl in order to catch the juice. Press as much of the juice through as possible and then add enough bottled tomato juice to bring the total to 1 cup. Place the tomatoes and juice into a large mixing bowl. Add the cucumber, bell pepper, red onion, jalapeno, garlic clove, olive oil, lime juice, balsamic vinegar, Worcestershire, cumin, salt and pepper and stir to combine. Transfer 1 1/2 cups of the mixture to a blender and puree for 15 to 20 seconds on high speed. Return the pureed mixture to the bowl and stir to combine. Cover and chill for 2 hours and up to overnight. Serve with chiffonade of basil.

CREME BRULEE INGREDIENTS 1 quart heavy cream 1 vanilla bean, split and scraped 1 cup vanilla sugar, divided 6 large egg yolks 2 quarts hot water DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Place the cream, vanilla bean and its pulp into a medium saucepan set over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat, cover and allow to sit for 15 minutes. Remove the vanilla bean and reserve for another use. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup sugar and the egg yolks until well blended and it just starts to lighten in color. Add the cream a little at a time, stirring continually. Pour the liquid into 6 (7 to 8-ounce) ramekins. Place the ramekins into a large cake pan or roasting pan. Pour enough hot water into the pan to come halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Bake just until the creme brulee is set, but still trembling in the center, approximately 40 to 45 minutes. Remove the ramekins from the roasting pan and refrigerate for at least 2 hours and up to 3 days. Remove the creme brulee from the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes prior to browning the sugar on top. Divide the remaining 1/2 cup vanilla sugar equally among the 6 dishes and spread evenly on top. Using a torch, melt the sugar and form a crispy top. Allow the creme brulee to sit for at least 5 minutes before serving.

MINT JULEP Glassware: Julep Cup Method: In a julep glass, combine mint and simple syrup. Gently press the mint into the syrup to release the essential oils (be careful not to over press/muddle as it will make the mint turn black and bitter). Add 1.5 oz. of bourbon and fill the cup ½ to ¾ way with ice. Stir until the mug begins to frost over. Then, add the remaining 1 oz. of bourbon and fill the cup to the top with ice. Stir again until the cup frosts over. Top with ice, Garnish, serve and enjoy! Ingredients: 2.5 oz. Rabbit Hole Cavehill (Kentucky Straight Bourbon) .5 oz. Simple Syrup (equal parts sugar and water) 6 - 8 pieces Mint Leaf Crushed Ice Garnish: 1 - 2 Healthy Mint Sprigs The Mint Julep is truly an icon, especially in the summer. It is crisp, refreshing, relaxing and simply delicious. This cocktail has stood the testament of time as one of the greatest in the business and beloved across the world. Many people believed the julep was introduced and made famous by the Kentucky congressman Henry Clay at the site where the Willard Hotel now stands. Some claimed it was founded in Virginia in the early 1800’s, while others point to print mentions in the 1790’s of the drink consisting of rum. No matter the truth, the drink has been mixed with every spirit and wine imaginable and crafty bartenders and enthusiasts make incredible interpretations. Best known for featuring America’s world-famous spirit – bourbon – the mint julep is a drink that is an unequivocal favorite. Perfect to showcase a little summer “Magic.” *Notes: Many people enjoy adding a few dashes of bitters (either with the mint and syrup, or over top with the garnish). All types of sugar (even sugar cubes) or non-sugar sweeteners are available for substitute for white sugar.

CARIBBEAN JULEP Glassware: Tiki Mug Method: Combine mint leaf, ginger liqueur and cane sugar in the base of a tiki mug and gently press to combine the flavors of the ingredients together. Fill the glass ¾ of the way with crushed ice and stir until the mug/glass frosts over (*given the shape of tiki mugs, this can be a little more difficult and may require a slow motion stir that breaks the ice that sticks to the inside wall of the glass.) Top the drink with crushed ice and .5 oz. topper of port. Garnish, serve and enjoy! Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Mt. Gay Black Barrel .5 oz. Ginger Liqueur 1 heaping tsp. Brown Sugar / Cane Sugar 6-8 pieces Mint Leaf Crushed Ice .5 oz. Port Garnish: Mint Sprig and Pineapple Chunks The famous summer nights are known throughout the ages for forming beloved memories. Yet some summers may not mirror summers past. Social distancing, the lack of places to go and friends to see can certainly put a damper on those famed summer nights. Enter, the need for a cocktail, one to whisk one away to a tropical isle. Historical lore claims mint as usage with rum dating back to the 1500’s when Sir Francis Drake sailed the seas. The Royal navy and pirates alike drank rum, traversing the shining waters of the Caribbean with cocktail in hand. No need to go that far back! Classic aged rum brings out the sweet and rich flavors of baking spice, marshmallow and caramel – all born to pair with mint. The ginger adds another tropical spice. When properly finished the cocktail should feel like a “frozen fire”…and leaves everyone knowing that the Caribbean Julep is their “one desire” this summer.

JULEP DE OAXACA Glassware: Rocks Glass Method: Combine mint, bitters, sugar and water in the bottom of an empty rocks glass and press with a muddler to combine flavors. Fill the glass ½ way with ice and Vida Del Maguey Mezcal. Stir until the glass frosts over. Top off with crushed ice, garnish, serve and enjoy! Ingredients: 2 oz. Vida Del Maguey 3 Dashes Chocolate Bitters 2 tsp. Coconut Palm Sugar .25 oz. Water Crushed ice 6-8 pieces Mint Leaf Garnish: Mint Sprig, Mango Chunks, and Blackberries This summer, we may be feeling simply upside down. However, one of the great remedies for unease and uncertainty has always been a great cocktail. This concoction starts with an ancient spirit, just now making larger headlines, Mezcal. Much like the mint julep, the story of Mezcal is steeped in antique lore. Brought forth by the gods and consumed by the transcendent – these are the tall tales that great drinks and evenings are built upon. Del Maguey and the mezcal create a granite like foundation. Rich in saline and mineral flavors, the Vida Del Maguey also express fruit tones and the slightest accentuation of char and earthiness. These natural essences make a perfect reception to the aromatic and refreshing elements brought forth by the addition of mint. Chocolate, a natural part of Oaxacan cuisine, brings depth to round out and soften the flavors already in the mix. A touch of sugar is needed to bring all the pieces in line, and the coconut palm sugar provides that touch of sweet. Finally, the chill and the frost level the cocktail. The Julep de Oaxaca will be the summer partner that brings about a little summer “magic.”

MONEY & FINANCE MONEY SENSE

WRITTEN BY MARC S. SCHLIEFER, CFP® PRESIDENT AND FINANCIAL PLANNER

New Year’s Eve was like any other New Year’s Eve last year. Getting ready for a new year, the economy was going strong. People were going out into large crowds and flying to meetings and going on vacation. Everything seemed normal until Covid 19 cases started up and the world shut down, hopefully, temporally. Everything came to a screeching halt. The stock market took a dramatic drop. In a matter of 3 weeks the Dow dropped from a high of 29,568 to a low of 18,213 in mid-March. It also had a dramatic rebound; I am writing this on June 29th and the market is at 25,605. It was quite a wild ride and it will probably continue to be volatile for a while. I will be discussing things that you can do to adapt and make sure that you are doing the best that you can until this pandemic is over. The first thing that you want to do is to make sure that your health and estate planning is in order. This includes making sure that you have heath care powers of attorney and living wills in place. That way you can ensure that if you were to get the virus or any type of illness, your doctors will know your wishes and also know who they are able to take instructions from. If you have these documents in place, you also want to make sure that your powers of attorney and back up powers of attorney still have viable candidates listed. Sometimes when reviewed, we find that some of the players have passed or are not in your life at the current time and need to be changed. If these individuals needed to be called upon at a stressful time, this can complicate an already intense situation. We recommend looking over the documents and reviewing the players to determine if they are still the ones you want. If they are not, choose new ones and ask your attorney to make the changes and get the documents signed, witnessed and notarized properly. You should do this every year, just to be safe. We should do the same thing with your will and trusts. It is a good time to make sure that your personal representatives and trustees are current. You should also make note of any new children or grandchildren that are not mentioned and need to be added. Also, there may be individuals that you may want removed from your planning documents for other reasons. You should also look at your life insurance and retirement plans and make sure that the beneficiaries are up to date. We have had occasions where we have reviewed beneficiaries with clients and discovered

that their beneficiary is an ex-spouse and they have gotten remarried. These are items that should be reviewed on an annual basis and most people do not. Taking the time to do this now is a good thing and it can save your family aggravation and heartache later on. You should also look at your investment portfolio and analyze the risk level and make sure that you are comfortable with the amount of risk that you are taking. A lot of people panicked when the market dropped to 18,213 in March and realized that they had more risk than they were comfortable with. Unfortunately, some of those people panicked and got out of the market at or near the low point and they missed the run up. The best thing to do is to have a conversation with your financial advisor and review where you are at from a risk standpoint and determine how much risk you’re willing to withstand. It is a good time to reevaluate and make changes since the market has mostly recovered. If you have not heard from your investment advisor or if you have been handling your own investments, it may be a good time to get a second opinion. Please feel free to email me at marcs@equityplanning.com and we would be happy to review your current portfolio. I hope that we are back to a more normal world by this New Year’s Eve and that you and your families stay safe and healthy. Securities offered through Cetera Advisor Networks LLC, Member FINRA/SIPC. HEALTH & WELLNESS YOUR BEST SELF

As we slowly begin to emerge from shelter in place orders, every one of us will have a different story relating to our experience in keeping the body and mind nourished, fit and healthy during lockdown. If we had been told at the start of 2020 that in a matter of weeks our ‘normal’ lives would be shut down, I don’t think anyone would have believed it! With the closure of gyms, restaurants and bars, and with limited access to items in grocery stores that we usually take for granted, day to day living has become a challenge. Some of us have been able to stick to our health and fitness routines while others have struggled without the in person support and motivation from the community they usually rely upon.

2) Do you feel that you still need to train in the same way as before or has something changed?

It is a fascinating time to examine your relationship with all things health and fitness. You can learn from this experience and optimize your training and nutrition (healthy lifestyle) once life returns to some semblance of normalcy. Take a moment or two to reflect on the following questions:

7) What did you miss the most as far as health and fitness is concerned?

1) Did health and fitness feel easier or more complicated during shelter in place?

3) Do you need the accountability that a fitness community provides or are you self-motivated? 4) Were you consistent in your fitness routines or did your enthusiasm wane as the weeks went by? If so, why? 5) Were you able to find value in lower intensity movement? 6) Did you fuel your body in the same way or did your eating patterns fluctuate with emotions?

Before you dive right back in to where you left off, think of this experience as a reset. Now is your opportunity to really explore your why. Why do you want to be fit and healthy? What do you enjoy most about the pursuit of health and fitness? As you work through the questions above, be completely honest with yourself. If you discovered that you actually enjoy

SLOW STREETS INITIATIVE DC has taken steps that they believe will make streets more hospitable for residents to be outside while maintaining distancing recommendations. Seven locations are now subject to the Slow Streets initiative. They are the following: • The roughly 8 blocks of 19th Street NW between Dupont Circle and Biltmore Street, as well as “most of” the blocks of Biltmore Street and Cliffbourne Place NW; • The roughly 10 blocks of 36th Street NW between Connecticut Avenue and Reno Road NW; • The roughly 12 blocks of 8th Street NW between Piney Branch Road and Missouri Avenue NW; • The roughly 8 blocks of Newton Street NE between 12th Street and South Dakota Avenue NE; • The roughly 9 blocks of 12th Street NE between K and East Capitol Streets NE; • The roughly 3 blocks of Grant Street NE between 46th Street and Minnesota Avenue NE; • The roughly 2 blocks of 15th Street SE between Mississippi Avenue and Savanah Street SE, and the roughly 5 blocks of 15th Place SE between Alabama Avenue and Bruce Place SE. These streets will have a speed limit of 15 miles per hour, and drivers are meant to only use the designated streets if their destination is within two blocks. Additional Slow Streets are expected to be designated throughout the summer. (Urban Turf)

MARINE CORPS MARATHON The Marine Corps Marathon organizers are figuring out a way to bring the race live to participants. Their working solution is to break the 45th MCM up into 24 waves that will start over an expanded window of time on event morning. This plan will necessitate a smaller field of in-person participants. Those in the late waves will have less time to Beat the Bridge. (Marine Corps Marathon)
