Project title:URBAN ARCHIPELAGO Project type:Academic/Professional Tools:Rhino/Auto CAD/Photoshop/Illustrator/Laser cut/ V ray/Model making/3D printing/ CNC Year:2014 Location:Toronto/ Panam Games Collaborators:Nicholas LeBlanc Description:The design brought forth a rigorous study of material systems
to create a hybridization with latex and fiberglass rods. Through the notion of testing, creating and using technological means as a resourceful tool, one was able to actuate the movement of the rods and understand the stretch of the pouches. The design is a lightweight deployable structure holding plant life. The canopies range in size and are connected by mist rods that would water the new urban ecosystem. In between certain canopies are waterbeds that would retain water and release when needed, but also create seating for visitors and athletes alike. At the end of the two-month life cycle, spectators are gifted a pouch with a plant to take home and grow.

Project title:SPROTT LEVEE Project type:Academic/Professional Tools:Rhino/Auto CAD/Photoshop/Illustrator/Laser cut/ V ray/ Model making Year:2013 Location:Chaudiere Islands/Albert Island/Ottawa Collaborators:Ali Piwowar Description:The Sprott School of Business is relocating its faculty
to two potential sites. Albert Island is the unique site of the two with two heritage buildings, and surrounded by Levees that empty a few times a year. The surrounding islands are heavily concentrated with history containing 32 different heritage buildings. The design brings forth the different layers of history: Aboriginal, industrial, present and iconic future with the building of the tower. It respects the historical building and mainly contains smaller classrooms and offices. The addition houses a central node with a sculptural atrium and theatre space meanwhile the tower is a hotel with office space for professors.

Project title:PRINGLES Project type:Academic/Design-build Tools:Rhino/Auto CAD/Photoshop/illustrator/laser cut model making/CNC Year:2013 Location:Architecture School/Ottawa Collaborators:Christine Legault/Sarah Ward/Sebastian Wolfe/Sam Palacio Description:Inspired by the complex shape based of the sine curve, the challenge was to design and build an installation that would revolve around the usage of digital technologies for potential fabrication. The team explored the stiffening of fabric, thresholds of translucency and patterning to create an installation that would play with light, and allow for suspension. The result created a shape that could be easily replicated and although digitally fabricated very organic by nature.

Project title:IMMIGRATION CENTRE: HOUSING AND INSTITUTE Project type:Academic/Design Tools:Sketch up/Auto CAD/Photoshop/Illustrator/Podium render Year:2012 Location:Ladygrey drive/ Sussex drive/Ottawa Collaborators:N/A Description:The Immigration center acts as a buffer zone for newcomers to familiarize and
discover the Canadian culture before entering the city. This idea is explored through the metaphor of the shell which is incorporated in the design. The hard shell on the north end protects the people within the institute from prevailing winds and soft glazing on the south opens up towards Parliament, and the natural landscape. There are two components to the immigration center: institute and housing.

Project title:CANADIAN DIVERSITY Project type:competition Tools:AutoCad drafting/illustrator Year:2014 Location:Ottawa Collaborators:N/A Description:
The pattern is a series of computer-drafted [drawn] images of different cultures interlocking to create a new fabric. Canadian diversity is being able to express religion, culture, and identity freely. To be part of this country is to be part of a large diverse community, we learn from each other’s history, we embrace it, and we celebrate it. The image contains three images from different time periods/ cultures to create a new story together as Canadians. The design invites the potential of creating one focused three cross image, or weave into itself to create a fabric pattern for upholstery. The story is meant to perceived differently from every angle. I really wanted to intrigue the viewer by interlacing uncovential imagery.

Project title:EL TOTEM SOBRE LA RAMPA Project type:Academic/Design Tools:Sketch up/Auto CAD/Photoshop/Podium render/sketching Year:2012 Location:Vedado/Havana/Cuba Collaborators:N/A Description:Canadian totem poles depict different personalities as one
cohesive unit; much like the facades in Cuba. Cuba follows a strict ordnance but the facades have been able to evolve and eventually stitch within the fabric of the city. The Canadian embassy is situated in the district of Vedado and play with totemic ideas to bring forth different layers of both Canadian and Cuban culture. The market on the street front invites locals to set up small businesses. The embassy recedes towards the crater to shy away from the heavy traffic of the street. The tower is wrapped by a porous screen to allow a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces.

Project title:MARIONETTE THEATRE Project type:Academic/Design-build Tools:Rhino/Auto CAD/Photoshop/CNC/sketching/build Year:2011 Location:Architecture school/Ottawa Collaborators:Lauren Marshall/Alex Okuka/Desirae Cronsberry/ Jeffrey Kwok Description:As a group we were to design and build a temporary theatre
based off the story “The Fiddler in Hell. The concept revolves the idea of turning the theatre into a marionette, controlling the walls of the temporary structure by weaving fishing wire. Instead of a typical performance/ stage and audience, we approached it as a experiential experiment enclosing the audience within the theatre itself and choreographing the story through the movement of the marionette theatre.

Project title: WOODROFFE BRIDGES Project type:Academic/Urban Tools: Sketch up/Auto CAD/Photoshop/Podium render Year:2013 Location:Woodroffe/Richmond/Ottawa Collaborators:Benoit Maranda/Danielle Morley/Ali Piwowar Description:Situated in the west end of Ottawa with a high percentage of
families and elders the area was in need of healthy design. The neighborhood has a great potential for revival, and with densification allow for an urban lifestyle that would back onto a picturesque landscape known as the parkway. The area has been approved to have an LRT station running along Richmond to allow for a healthy re-development to occur. The group divided the areas by boardwalk and focused on different programming such as: residential tower, train station, commercial, and finally mixed use housing, recreational, spa. The boardwalks allowed for a direct connection to the water, and created a character defining element that would distinguish Woodroffe bridges from the rest of Ottawa. The mixed use housing would invited families and students, creating a diverse streetscape for the neighborhood.

Project title:DOMINION OBSERVATORY ASSESSMENT Project type:Academic/Heritage Tools: Auto Cad/Research/Photoshop Year:2012 Location:Ottawa/Carling ave.W Collaborators:N/A Description:The Dominion Observatory is one of the first major construction projects in Ottawa, and follows similar buildung materials and typologies as Parliament. The task was to document, research, and diagnose the building of any damage due to weathering or age. The following image documents the differing materials used and highlighting character defining elements of the observatory.

Project title:DOUBLE EXPOSURE: DECADENT STRUCTURES Project type:Photography Tools:Film Year: 2012 Location:Barcelona/Paris Collaborators:N/A Description:Experimented with double exposure photography in Paris and Barcelona. The images are an overlay between modern Spanish structural systems and contrasted with the ornate decadence of Paris. The experiment was to simultaneously juxtapose the two styles to create a narrative.
Ever since I was a child I knew I would find happiness through design. I have always been curious to the different things that fall under the umbrella of design. Throughout my university career I have had the opportunity to explore set design, patterning, digital fabrication, architecture, and installations. Through these many mediums of design there has always been a focus on pattern, colour and intensity within a form. My strength lies within extracting from mundane topics and allowing for moments to become alive through design. I hope in the future I could continue exploring what is design, and if I could exude emotional charges through it for others to feel. JG
