JOHN LYON ACADEMIC SOCIETY |Y7-U6

A series of academic talks by pupils 3rd October and 28th November– 4.10-5.15pm – BCH

At each Academic Society event, four John Lyon pupils will be presenting 5 10 minutes of academic talks on a topic of their choice.This is an opportunity for pupils to develop their presentation skills, and to learn from their peers about a variety of topics.

If you wish to give a talk please email Excellence@johnlyon.org expressing your interest and the title of the talk you would like to give.

For each Tier, selected teams will be asked fiendish questions and conundrums by the quizmaster as they are cheered on by their houses in the Boyd Campbell Hall. Each team is equipped with a buzzer and there will be questions based not only on a variety of school subjects, but also on current affairs and general knowledge that contestants would be expected to know for their age group. In addition to simple questions, rapid fire rounds and picture rounds will test the mettle of the contestants.

Contact your Housemaster, who will give you the details of how and when to take the First Round Quiz, which will be used to select the teams for the final.

DRAMA COMPETITION | Y7-U6

Monologue Challenge

Deadline for submissions Friday14th October

Challenge: Write, film or record an original monologue with a view to it being performed on stage. The monologue can be on any chosen theme, topic or issue of your choice and can be presented in any style or form.

Submission format:

•It must be written in the first person and be typed onto one side of A4 with a maximum font size of 12.

•In addition, students may also record themselves performing their monologue or submit a voice recording in the style of a Podcast.

•The recording must be between two and four minutes.

Winning criteria: Prizes will be awarded on creativity, characterisation and suitability to the brief.

Winners: One prize will be awarded for each of the following categories: Y7-Y9, Y10 & Y11, Sixth Form

NB: The recording does not have to be the same student who wrote the monologue, it can be anyone they choose, although they may of course choose to perform it themselves.

Chemistry Competition | Years 9, 10 & 11

Deadline for applications: 14th October

Challenge: Apply and compete to represent the School in the national chemistry competition, Top of the Bench.

Format of competition: Pupils work in teams to complete several rounds of chemistry quizzes and general knowledge

How to apply? Students nominate themselves to their Chemistry teacher for a pre-selection test

Guidance: Once the teams are selected, you will enter the preparation stages led by the Head of Chemistry.

Deadline for submissions Monday 7th November

Challenge: Write a poem in French

Guidance: The poem needs to be your own work. Be inspired by life in La Francophonie. Feel free to choose any part of French culture, sport, food, music, films … as inspiration.

Winning criteria: Prizes will be awarded on the creativity and the quality of French language used.

Winners: One Prize will be awarded for each key stage.

HISTORY COMPETITION | Y7-U6

Deadline for submissions – Wednesday 7th December

Challenge: Write an essay answering the following question:

How has a country’s physical environment or geography informed its history?

Winning criteria: Prizes will be awarded where the demands of the question have been thought through and relevant own knowledge is deployed to support any assertions made.

Winners: One prize for each of the following categories: Y7-Y8, Y9-Y11, Sixth Form.

How to submit? Submissions need to be sent electronically to Mr Longhurst: CKL@johnlyon.org. Handwritten work can be scanned and emailed.

FRENCH POETRY COMPETITION | Y7-U6

EXCELLENCE EVENING EVENT

OPEN TO PUPILS AND THEIR FAMILIES

Guest Speaker: Professor Nicola Rollock

Nicola is a Professor of Social Policy & Race at King’s College London and a consultant specialising in racial justice in education and the workplace. Nicola is also a Distinguished Fellow at the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge.

In 2020, Nicola was an expert contributor to the BAFTA winning two part Channel 4 documentary The School That Tried to End Racism.

We are delighted to be hosting Nicola for an evening event at John Lyon to discuss her research as well as her new book The Racial Code: tales of resistance and survival.

Booking details will be emailed to all parents and students nearer the time.
