Autumn 2019

TEDxJohnLyonSchool: Earth John Lyon hosted a TEDx conference on 17th October 2019 on the theme ‘Earth’ where pupils, parents, teachers and esteemed subject experts explored the Blue Planet’s place in the universe, the beauty and power of our world, the landscapes and environments that shape our daily lives, the nations and tribes that label and define us, and solutions to some of the problems facing humanity. The 1876 Fund was able to sponsor this event, providing a small group coaching opportunity with public speaking champion Simon Bucknall, for seven pupils from Year 8 through to Upper Sixth. They had a coaching session on public speaking including tips on varying the tone, humour and body language of different parts of the sentence and how that can change how the audience receive it. The boys were able to practise their speeches and receive direct feedback from Simon on their own personal performance in preparation for the TEDx event. This was so valuable to helping them take their speech to the next level and have the maximum audience impact.

What is the 1876 Fund? The 1876 Fund is a regular giving programme enabling parents and OLs to support exciting opportunities beyond the standard curriculum and departmental budgets. These projects enrich learning experiences with an immediate and direct impact to pupils that will stay with them for a lifetime. We would like to thank all our donors for their continued generous support, without which the projects to date would not have been possible. Every donation helps deliver even more exciting, aspirational projects for the future.

Bursary Appeal Update In memory of an Old Lyonian, OLs Paul Matarewicz and Michael Foster launched a Bursary Appeal. Through regular donations over seven years the target is to be able to fund one child from Year 7 through to Upper Sixth. One year on and we have raised almost 30% of the target. Supporting Bursaries at John Lyon can transform the life of a child and welcome him to an environment that challenges, inspires and provides opportunities that would otherwise 28% be unreachable. For any parents who are OLs please get in touch if you are interested in supporting this cause.

OUR TARGET £134,624

(£19,232 per year for 7 years)

TOTAL RAISED £37,730 (£5,390 per year for 7 years)

“Without a Bursary I would not have attended John Lyon and I doubt I would have gone to university. I will always be grateful to JLS for giving me the chance to show what I could do” Liam Halligan, OL (1980-87), Bursary recipient, Head Boy, BSc (Hons), M. Phil (Oxon), Governor (2016 to date), Regular Donor

Autumn 2019 EVERY GIFT WILL HELP ENRICH THE LIVES OF CURRENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS OF JOHN LYON PUPILS.

Cricket Nets Appeal 2020 Cricket has been played at the School for over 130 years and is still one of the strongest sports offered at John Lyon. This summer John Lyon plans to install a state-of-the-art cricket nets facility at Sudbury with the potential of an all-purpose flooring so it can have multiple use across other sports all year round. ‘An outdoor multi-purpose net facility at Sudbury is the next step to enhancing our goal of Sport for all with a drive on sporting excellence. It will enable greater opportunities for pupils to develop individual talents and skills within Cricket, whilst offering a further allweather surface for teams across a number of our other sporting disciplines.’- Shane Cloete (Director of Sport) and Adam Ling (Head of Cricket)

The total cost of the project is estimated to be £50,000. To support this important project to be ready for Autumn 2020, part of the total will be supported with a contribution from the 1876 Fund and from the School. The more parents that join, the faster we can reach our development goals. If 250 families gave £100 we could immediately raise £25,000, boosting this even further with Gift Aid. We encourage you to join and contribute towards our ambitious goal that will enable us to build stronger relationships with schools and clubs in our local community and most importantly enrich the lives of current and future John Lyon pupils.
