THE QUAINTON HERALD Issue 103 – 12th November 2021

HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE Dear Parents, The highlight of the week was a further performance by our Bollywood Clubs. As well as for the sparkling performance we were treated to by the children, the reason for it being such a highlight was due to the fact that it was the first time, since the Covid pandemic struck, that we have been able to invite an audience of parents into school. It was so lovely to see the back rows full of parents again and it certainly meant a lot to the children performing to have their parents and carers present. I am always very appreciative of the commitment that parents show by supporting these events so a big thank you! Next week we have two musical concerts from the children in Years 3 to 6 to which parents are warmly invited. Please do refer to Mr Jones’ and Mr Haswell’s previous communication and be sure to book your tickets via the link provided. The children have now completed their November exams and deserve a well-earned break this weekend. The staff will start to go through the papers once all the children who missed exams due to absenteeism have completed their papers next week. It is important to emphasise to your child that it is better to learn from their experience rather than ‘brew’ over a result that may not have gone quite as expected. I know the children have all given of their best and they should be proud of their efforts. The school gathered together on Thursday to remember all those who have given their lives to protect our country. The ceremony started with our trumpeters; I must congratulate Anthony W (Yr 3) and Adam M (Yr 5) for their outstanding playing of ‘The Last Post’. It was certainly beautifully and provided a poignant moment for reflection. Fr Mike read out the names of all Quainton Hall ‘old boys’ who lost their lives in the Second World War and we observed two minutes’ silence whilst the firing cannons could be heard on top of the hill at Harrow School.

HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE CONTINUED Our Scientists headed to Chesham Prep on Thursday to compete in a Science competition. Further details are outlined later in the Herald but I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the team on coming 3rd; a great achievement. I know Dr Khodamoradi has already put together a plan to prepare her scientists to do even better next year and I thank her for arranging this enriching opportunity for the children. Our sport continues to go from strength to strength under the leadership of Mr Antoine and I am always impressed by the children’s efforts. On Thursday our U11 played in a tournament at Eastcote and, although we did not win, I do want to congratulate Kirtan P (Yr 6) who was voted ‘Player of the Tournament’ from all those competing in the teams playing that day.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT News from the English Department: This week, the children in Year 4 to Year 6 have been busy with their school English and Maths exams but, in next week’s Herald, we hope to be able to share some examples of the imaginative descriptive writing they have produced in class as part of their revision. In Year 3, the children have been writing formal letters based on the class reader, Mr Majeika. Pupils have taken on the role of Mrs Bigmore, writing a letter of complaint to the headmaster, Mr Potter, complaining that her son, Hamish, has been turned into a frog by Mr Majeika! Pupils have used all the techniques they have learned about the features of letter writing, such as including addresses, an appropriate greeting and sign off, along with using emotive language to describe characters and feelings. Below are some examples of the work in both Y3JC and Y3ZS that the pupils have completed.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT We are also delighted to share with you some further samples of the work Year 3 carried out during Black History Month, where they researched the life and achievements of Rosa Parks. Imagining they were journalists, the children travelled back in time to write a newspaper article detailing her arrest.

MATHS DEPARTMENT Year 4 worked in pairs to create posters of Venn and Carroll diagrams grouping 2D shapes. This hands-on activity helped them solidify their knowledge of the properties of 2D shapes as well as revise and apply their displaying data skills.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT The Year 3 Scientist of the Week is Anthony (Y3ZS). In recognition of his excellent work on the process of pollination in the life cycle of a flowering plant, he demonstrated great research skills and shared his scientific knowledge in class.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT CONTINUED We want to make Science exciting and high profile in our school. We took part in a Science Quiz Competition involving schools from England this week. The Quiz Club National Championships are the largest Inter-School competitions in the UK with primary school-aged children from across the country taking part each year in fantastic quiz events. Each Area Heat comprises 30 multiple-choice questions and hosted by professional Quizmaster with team members using a personal wireless handset to select their answers. The quiz projected to a huge screen with brilliant sound and visuals, just like a television gameshow. The Quizmaster included plenty of additional information, feeding the children's natural curiosity and broadening their knowledge throughout the competition. We would like to take this opportunity and express our warmest congratulations to our team players in Year 5 and Year 6 for their achievement coming third. Well done Eyitayo, Krish, Finn and Zayd!

QUAINTON HALL SCHOOL ACT OF REMEMBRANCE 2021

Since the end of the First World War, on 11th November 1918, many countries around the world have held a parade or some other gathering, to remember the many hundreds of thousands of military personnel who died during that war, and in conflicts since. The Exhortation is recited: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. The Last Post is sounded. The Two Minute Silence is observed. Reveille is sounded During the First World War, and shortly after losing a friend at the Battle of Ypres in 1915, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields to write his now famous poem 'In Flanders Fields'. In Flanders' fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders' fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high, If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders' Fields.

Page 13

QUAINTON HALL SCHOOL ACT OF REMEMBRANCE 2021 Although wooden crosses and red poppies are most commonly used in the United Kingdom, other symbols are now used for particular aspects of remembrance – a black poppy rose to remember African, Black, Caribbean, Pacific Islands and Indigenous Communities contributions to the various War Efforts of the last centuries, and Hindu, Jewish and Islamic symbols rather than crosses are used to remember those of other faiths who have also died in war. We now remember those 28 members of the QHS community whom we know to have died in war. These names are all of boys who lost their lives during the Second World War, all of them aged between 20 and 32 years old. Let us pray… Almighty God, stretch forth your mighty arm to strengthen and protect the armed forces; grant that meeting danger with courage and on all occasions with discipline and loyalty, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace; to the honour of your holy name. Amen.
