THE QUAINTON HERALD Issue 105 – 26th November 2021

HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE Dear Parents, It is so enjoyable that parents are now once again able to come into school to celebrate their children’s achievements and progress. There are only thirteen working days between now and the end of term and there is much to do and see! We very much look forward to welcoming you all to the various events that are taking place in the coming weeks and ask you to keep a keen eye on the Herald for details of timings and arrangements for the many events we have planned. On Monday, the Chamber Choir travelled to John Lyon to record their pieces for the Barnardo’s National Choir Competition 2022. By all accounts, they sang exceptionally well and we keep our fingers firmly crossed in the hope of making the final cut! On the theme of music, the School was thoroughly entertained on Tuesday morning with a superb violin performance by Karun K who is in the lower sixth at John Lyon. He captivated the audience with Tchaikovsky’s Chanson Triste. Following his performance, the School sang ‘Try Everything’ and we all felt collectively ‘lifted’ by the wonderful performances. Thursday brought the whole school together for the M&M production of Snow White. The children enjoy these productions and they provide a little light relief during what is a very busy term. I would like to thank Fr Mike for organising this event for the children and for helping us all get into the pantomime spirit. We ended the week with a super assembly from Year 3JC. Their performance was a wonderful insight in to the history of ‘Thanksgiving’. The assemblies take a lot of time to both plan and prepare and I thank 3JC and Ms Campion for making the end of the week so entertaining and informative. It provided us all with the opportunity to pause and reflect on all the things for which we should be thankful. Our Advent Concert will take place at Trinity Church on the evening of 10th December. This is an important date in our school calendar and I would like to remind parents that it is a compulsory event, which we expect all children in Year 3 to Year 6 to attend.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT News from the English Department: Huge congratulations to the following children who have been awarded Wizard Writer Certificates for their work in English and whose work can be seen displayed in the main school corridor: William, Isabelle, Rishita – Year 6 Aditi, Krish – Year 5 Lara, Zalaan – Year 4

Year 3 have written poems based on their class reader, ‘George's Marvellous Medicine’ by Roald Dahl. They needed to tap into their creative imagination to come up with a suitably disgusting potion for George's grandma to drink. The children were tasked with including interesting adjectives and verbs, onomatopoeia, alliteration and rhyming couplets in their poems. Both classes worked fantastically hard and came up with some wonderfully wacky ideas for their potion poems! Have a read of the sample we’ve included below and see if you would be brave enough to try their perilous potions!

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT CONTINUED This week, Year 4 have been busy writing descriptions of their imaginary spaceships, in response to their work on the class reader ‘Fortunately, the Milk’, by Neil Gaiman. The children explored a range of figurative language, powerful adjectives, adverbs and verbs to create some truly imaginative descriptions of their super space machines. Here are some photos of the children at work and we look forward to sharing samples of the descriptions written by the children across Year 4 in next week’s Herald.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT CONTINUED Members of Year 5 and 6 have been studying ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ this past week. Year 6 had fun re-writing and performing some of Shakespeare’s words for a modern audience.

As part of their studies, the children also examined the story of ‘Theseus and the Minotaur’ and created story boards summarizing the key moments of this mythical tale. Here are two examples from Rishita and Isabelle, for which they were awarded their Wizard Writer Certificates.

STUDY SKILLS Throughout the term, Year 6 have been developing their public speaking and interview skills as part of the Study Skills syllabus. The children have really impressed the staff with both their indepth research and excellent presentation skills when delivering speeches on current affairs and key world issues. The topics we have explored include COP 26, the threat to our oceans and seas and the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic on children and young people. We are delighted to share with you a sample of the children’s work, along with photographs of some of our Year 6 delivering their speeches to the class.

MATHS DEPARTMENT Year 3JC have worked on multiplication and division by 10 and 100 through a variety of independent and group activities. They have been introduced to the topic through the place value chart, which has helped them to visualise how a number's digits change value, when multiplied or divided by 10 and 100. They have practised their reasoning and communication skills using the correct mathematical vocabulary through short presentations in class and eventually have been able to write the rules for multiplication and division in their books by themselves.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT In Year 6, the pupils are learning about the respiratory system and the effects of smoking on our health. Smoking can cause lung disease, heart disease, certain cancers, and around 114,000 people die every year as a result of smoking-related illnesses. It was a good opportunity for our Year 6 to conduct a practical experiment and work out the human lung capacity in one minute, one day and finally, in one year.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT The music department celebrated two wonderful Autumn performances last week, where Years 3 & 4 and Years 5 & 6 showcased their learning from the first Autumn term. We also had special performances from our Chamber Choir and School Orchestra, which were supported by pupils from John Lyon School. We also had some solo and ensemble instrumental performances on violin and trumpet. They were two very special evenings, filled with excitement, energy and musical talent. Here are some images from this special event.

We would also like to say a big thank you to our Director of Music, Mr Huw Jones who came into school on Tuesday morning to lead on our music assembly. He brought Karun K, a pupil from John Lyon School to talk about his passion for music and the violin and they played a lovely piece of music by Tchaikovsky. It was very inspirational for our pupils from Year 3 – 6.

YEAR 1 This week in our English lessons we have been learning about how to write instructions. The children in 1K and 1R had lots of fun using time adverbs and imperative verbs to instruct each other on how to make a jam sandwich! The best part of the lesson was definitely right at the end, when the children got to eat their tasty sandwiches!
