THE QUAINTON HERALD Issue 108 – 14th January 2022
HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE Dear Parents, The children are now well and truly back into the school routine. It was wonderful to be in the singing assembly on Friday as the school sang songs from ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘Trolls’. These sessions do so much to lift the children and the School, something desperately missed last year. Sport has also kicked off with matches against Norbury on Wednesday. I must congratulate the ‘A-team’ for their 6-0 win. The girls play their first football match of the year against Radlett on Friday afternoon and I wish them well. On Monday, we held the ‘end of term’ assembly for Year 3 to 6, which should have taken place at the very end of last term. It was a pleasure to present so many awards and to celebrate the children’s individual and collective success.

HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE CONTINUED On Monday 24th January, Year 5 and Year 6 pupils will be spending the afternoon at the John Lyon School, where they will be taking part in an exciting afternoon of Science, Art and Sport. On the same day, parents of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils are invited to come to the John Lyon School. Mrs Khan will be sending out the details and invitations. It will be an opportunity to see what the ‘through school’ experience looks like and I thoroughly recommend that parents find the time to attend if they are able to do so. I would like to finish by congratulating ‘The Chamber Choir’ who have been selected to perform in the finals of the Barnardo’s National Choral Competition at the Barbican in March. It is a tribute to all their hard work and to Mr Jones, our Director of Music, for his vision and passion for music; very well done indeed!

We are so proud of the children and want to thank parents for their ongoing support with reading at home. As English staff, we can really see the difference that regular reading is making to the children’s English skills and there was great excitement in assembly on Monday when we announced the results to the School. Special congratulations go to the following children for their individual contribution to the House Reading Challenge: Rayan, Alexander F, Zahra, Riyan P, Krish B, Anoushka, Shreya, Veera, R, as well as to Yug who won the individual prize for pupil engagement with reading. 4th Place - Frasers 3rd Place – Ghalebs 2nd Place – Combers 1st Place – Hallidays Once again, there was just a handful of books separating 1st and 2nd place and it is super to see the children already engaging with a wide range of new texts ready to take on this term’s House Reading Challenge.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT CONTINUED This week, some of the Year 6 children have been exploring the character of Puck from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. The children examined the characteristics of Puck and re-created a modern day version of the character for the 21st Century. Having drawn Puck, the children then explained the reasons behind why they had represented their modern day versions in the way that they had.

Using the outdoors is always a great way of getting children excited about learning. The Year 3 pupils ventured out to the school garden, looking at different types of rocks and tried to differentiate and categorise them in two main groups, along with having the opportunity to widen their knowledge using a Specimens Rock set and completing their activities based on our lesson objectives.

Facts that needed to be included were: the population, number of countries in the continent, the longest river, the highest point, the largest lake and then add on any other interesting facts. Once they completed the posters, they had the opportunity to present them to their peers, teaching each other all of the amazing facts about the continents.

YEAR 2 What's the Time Year 2??? We have spent the week in Year 2 going clock crazy! We have been learning how to tell the time to the o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. We then looked at how to convert the time from analogue clocks to digital ones... and back again! Telling the time is tricky, but it is a life skill and one we need to practise on a daily basis to become confident in our clock skills. So please ask us - what is the time?!

PARENT PORTAL Many of our parents have been using the SchoolBase Parent Portal for some years, to access important information, grades, the calendar and the like. With the merge with John Lyon, we are moving to the product that they have been using - ‘MySchoolPortal’ (MSP). Access to the previous SchoolBase portal will be removed over this coming weekend. Invoices were sent home over the Christmas break using the new portal, which we are sure you will have accessed already. We are now in a position to transfer our Calendar of events onto this portal along with some information documents which you may find useful. All School events will be published in the Calendar and we would encourage you to visit it regularly, so you can keep up to date with our upcoming events. You will find the calendar at the top right of your Parent Portal home page by selecting ‘My Calendar’. Click on the calendar icon and it will be displayed on your screen. Once on the My Calendar page, you will be able to search, filter, export and customise your view.
Please do also try out some of the functions: Change the view (from day/week/month or term) and the layout (from a list to a grid format). Use the filters for ‘Schools and Years’ as well as ‘Categories’ to drill down to events which are of particular interest to you. Quainton year groups are all available individually or in groups.
Page 25
PARENT PORTAL CONTINUED Use the ‘Search’ button – for example, you could try typing in Music and you will see a list of only the Music events that are currently scheduled - you can refine this further by using one of the filters. Save the filters that you use regularly. You can always switch between your saved filters and the full calendar at any time. Export the Calendar into Outlook, Apple or Google calendars or even to MS Word or Excel if you would like to print a list. Click on ‘Subscribe & Exports’ to export the calendar. In summary, the John Lyon Parent Portal is a secure website that provides you with access to information relevant to your child.Alongside the School Calendar there will grow a wealth of other information eventually including your child’s timetable, attendance, latest School reports and sections that allow you to inform the School of absence due to illness as well as requesting leave in advance. A digest of school mailings is also available. If you are yet to set up your portal access, you will need to follow this link:https://parent.johnlyon.org/request-password Enter the email address we use for you and choose a password. After this the portal may be accessed via: http://parent.johnlyon.org. We hope you will find it a very a useful tool and simple to use, however, if you have any questions or comments, please do let us know by emailing Fr Mike. (mike.still@quaintonhall.org.uk).
