THE QUAINTON HERALD Issue 111 – 4th Febrauary 2022
HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE
Dear Parents, We were delighted to welcome Alex Falase-Koya online on Wednesday as Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 enjoyed an author and illustrator event. Further details of the event are outlined later in the Herald. Year 6 benefitted from an educational trip to Bentley Priory on Wednesday. Madame Mitchell planned a very entertaining day, where the children learnt all about the Battle of Britain and the important work carried out by the WAAF during the Second World War. All who went were full of praise for the venue and the learning experience afforded to the children. Thank you to Madame Mitchell and her team for accompanying the children. On Friday, 5JS treated us to a superb assembly on the Winter Olympics. The children were certainly well prepared and performed with a confidence rarely seen at this age. I must congratulate the group and Miss Shah for writing and directing the assembly so well. The school also enjoyed an assembly on the Chinese New Year on Wednesday. An informative presentation by Miss Parker taught us all a great deal about the celebrations, meaning and history behind this important and special time of year in the Chinese calendar. I wish all those within our community who are celebrating, a very Happy New Year. I look forward to welcoming you all to Quainton Hall on Monday evening for the Heads’ Briefing. The evening will enable myself and Miss Haynes to report on the development of a range of exciting initiatives and estate plans for Summer 2022 and 2023. Fr Mike has circulated an email inviting all parents, so do please respond directly to him if you intend to come along.

HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE CONTINUED Once all the results are published, I will relay, in full, the success of our Year 6 cohort in their 11+ examinations. From the results and notification of scholarship awards I have thus far received from senior school Heads, it is looking like another very successful year for our girls and boys and I look forward to sharing the exciting news with you in due course. Well done again to our Year 6 pupils on all their dedication and hard work during the 11+ process. I finish by wishing our U11 Tag Rugby team all the best for their match against Aldenham on Friday afternoon.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT News from the English Department: This week, the children in Reception, Years 1 and 2 enjoyed an online author event with Alex Falase-Koya talking about his adventure stories featuring Marv! Children’s author Alex has been writing since he was a teenager. His debut novel ‘Marv and the Mega Robot’ was inspired after Alex struggled to find superheroes in fiction who looked like him. By creating Marv, a superhero whose strengths are kindness and imagination, Alex hopes to have created a character to whom all children can relate. The event contained a mixture of his own comic-loving childhood, readings, and some super side-kick activities. The illustrator of his books, Paula Bowles, joined Alex and led the children in an interactive super suit building activity and live draw-along!

Year 6 have been writing their own ‘precepts’ by which to live their lives, using the work of R.J Palacio’s text ‘Wonder’ as their inspiration. As a fun, additional activity, some of the children have also designed their own alternative book covers, based on their reactions to and understanding of the novel.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Pupils in Year 3 to 6 took part in the Sustainability450 project which is run by the 8billionideas Company. This is the first time that Quainton Hall have taken part in this event and it has been an amazing experience for the pupils. They were challenged to create and develop a model to help our planet Earth and think about the preservation of the local land and animal population all around the world. The children were given an introduction to the project and a summary of different inventions or ways to make our planet sustainable. They had the opportunity to discuss the available options to tackle this problem, which in the end they could use to make, build and facilitate their own prototype. The pupils worked incredibly well together to produce a model that they can be proud of. They were thoughtful, shared ideas, listened to each other and most importantly had a very enjoyable time. The pupils will return to school with their models after half term (which will be displayed in the school) and the final touches and submissions will take place in a virtual finale at end of the March 2022.

SPORTS DEPARTMENT It was exciting times last Friday (28th January), as Quainton Hall was invited to compete at the Aldenham Swimming Gala, hosted at Bushey Grove Leisure Centre. It has been almost 3 years since our last involvement in a Gala, and this one did not disappoint! With four additional schools in attendance, there was strong opposition. QH swimmers represented us well, making Mrs Byrne extremely proud. Finn and Amelia swam fantastically, registering wins in their races, with others coming a close second in many more. I'd like to take the time to give a special mention to Anya, Aiza and Saif (Y4), who swam a year up in the U11 Gala (but performed exceptionally!) We are currently awaiting our final positions to be tallied and will update you all accordingly. Congratulations to all 15 swimmers representing Quainton Hall. We now look forward to hosting our very own Gala on March 1st 2022.

HISTORY This week in History, Year 3 have been learning all about the different Roman Gods. They have taken on the role of the teacher by creating a poster with all of the information to inform their class about the Roman God they were given. Each group then presented their work to the class. Here are just a few of the colourful, creative and informative posters some of the children designed.

HISTORY CONTINUED Year 6 Bentley Priory Trip On Wednesday, Year 6 visited Bentley Priory, where they discovered how the building was used as the command centre for the Battle of Britain in 1940. The workshop, which allowed them to reenact the strategic work done by the RAF and the WAAF, was the highlight. Getting into a Spitfire cockpit was pretty cool too! Many thanks to Mme Mitchell, Mrs Evans and Mrs Ford for helping on the trip, and to Year 6 for behaving so well and being a credit to the school.

NURSERY It has been a wonderful and exciting week in Nursery, full of new adventures! On Monday, we joined our very first singing assembly! We loved singing with all the Pre-Prep children. On Tuesday afternoon, we had our first Library lesson. We learnt how to treat books (with care and love), and how to gently flip the pages! This week we also learnt about Chinese New Year! Did you know it is the Year of the Tiger? We learnt about the Chinese Zodiac story, created our own lanterns and learnt how to say "Happy New Year" in Mandarin! You can try to practise at home as well. All you need to say is: "Xin Nian Quai Le! Gong Xi Fa Cai"!

YEAR 1 In Science, the children in Year 1 carried out a waterproof or absorbency experiment. This was to test whether different materials were waterproof or whether they absorbed water. We experimented with cling film, kitchen roll, foil and paper! The children made predictions first, then they wrote their results down and finally a conclusion! We had a lot of fun!

YEAR 2 The Changing Shape of Materials - Year 2 This week in our Science lesson we had a wonderful time investigating and exploring how we can change the shape of some materials. We each had a ball of play doh to shape, squash, squeeze, twist, bend and stretch. We learnt the definition of the word 'malleable'. We then had a basket of items including a sock, a tin can, a drinking straw, a sponge, a rubber band, a piece of towel and a pipe cleaner to investigate how malleable they were too! Some things could be bent and stretched, twisted and squashed but we soon realised that some of the materials then had to stay that way! This was a great investigation that we all really enjoyed!

QUIZ - WHO AM I? This week's Quiz Huge congratulations to all the pupils who successfully guessed Luciano Pavarotti as the answer to last week’s quiz. Special congratulations to Guru (3JC) who was the first to email me with the correct answer and a certificate will be awarded to him.
One of his famous quotes is “The Best or nothing. In the past, present and future.” He was born in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1844. He studied electrical engineering at university and worked in iron construction and as a draftsman. He made the world’s first production car called the Velo in 1894. He designed the world’s first lorry and in 1895.
Please send your answer by Monday via email to Mrs Alwaheidi at arwa.alwaheidi@edu.quaintonhall.org.uk
