Building on success to deliver an exciting future staff raised over £3,000 for charity this term with a Macmillan Coffee Morning, Jeans for Genes Day, the Poppy Appeal, the Year 7 Spanish Word Challenge and the ever-popular Head Boy Team milkshakes! We also supported a local nursery by collecting over 650 foodbank donations from our community – thank you all for your generosity. Together, we will continue to promote charitable initiatives supporting a range of good causes.

Mrs Rose Hardy

As we reflect on a tremendously successful term here at John Lyon, we look back at some of the many significant highlights from across our community and look ahead to our exciting future. The eagle-eyed among you will have noticed that we have renamed our termly magazine to The Lyonian. This was the original name of our magazine when the very first edition was published in March 1890. We are reverting to this name as it resonates more with our community, whose members past and present are referred to as Lyonians. We have also given it a refresh in its look and feel. We hope you enjoy it! I was recently interviewed by some of our young aspiring journalists, who asked very thought-provoking questions of me. I hope I was able to provide them with helpful answers! You can read the interview feature on the next page of this magazine. In another wonderful feature in this magazine we asked two of our Year 7 pupils to give us their top seven highlights since joining the School. This is again published within these pages. At this important time of year, when giving back is perhaps more important than ever, I am proud of our community’s charitable endeavours. Our pupils and

At the time of writing, we look forward to three consecutive performances of Made in Dagenham The Musical at Harrow School’s Ryan Theatre. We are very proud that professionals often comment that our musicals are of a standard akin to that of the West End’s productions. In keeping with our tradition and heritage, we held our Founder’s Day celebration at St Mary’s Church, Harrow-on-the-Hill. It was a wonderful occasion, and we were honoured to have in attendance the Mayor of Harrow Cllr Chauhan, along with Old Lyonians. One of the standout events this year was when we hosted our third TEDx event in our Boyd Campbell Hall. TEDxJohnLyonSchool provided an excellent opportunity for our pupil speakers to deliver talks on topics they are passionate about. It was a privilege to be in the audience to witness the inspiring discussions. Another significant event held on site, which we were honoured to host, was the prestigious VEX Robotics season’s UK opener, where we welcomed external schools – one from as far away as Turkey!

FROM THE HEAD

THE HEAD’S END OF TERM MESSAGE:

In the Prep School, our Enrichment Days continue to provide our younger pupils with ‘tasters’ of life and work at the Senior School site. They took part in a carousel of activities this term, including sessions on climate change and product design and some challenging PE sessions involving obstacle courses. We recently announced that from January 2024, our Prep School will take on our John Lyon School identity. From this point, our single John Lyon School name and logo will be used to represent us at all levels and at all of our sites. This is a significant positive step for our community as we cement our place as Northwest London’s leading co-educational, all-through 3 to 18, independent school. In the spirit of being an all-through School, from this issue of The Lyonian onwards you will see a spotlight on Prep news within these pages. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for welcoming me into this wonderful community as I end my first term here on such a high note. I wish you all a very Happy Christmas from all at John Lyon. We hope you, together with your loved ones, have a restful and enjoyable festive period and a Happy New Year. All best wishes,

Mrs Rose Hardy Head of John Lyon School

Our Excellence, Goldhawk and Careers programmes have been highly productive with pupils and parents/guardians alike enjoying insightful and impressive talks from our high-profile visitors. These events would not be possible without the support of the Lyonian Association, who fund a number of such initiatives that benefit our pupils directly.

Q & A:

Budding young journalists interview the Head On a crisp winter’s Thursday afternoon, we crossed the green lawn and entered the Red House. Being ushered upstairs to the Head’s office, we were certain of our questions but unsure of the answers we would be given as we interviewed Mrs Rose Hardy. We knew she was an experienced Head and is very ambitious for our School. During the interview we covered topics ranging from our status as a co-ed, all-through school, athletics, pupil voice and the educational system itself. This is an exciting time for our School. With Mrs Hardy sitting at the head of the table, let us begin… Ria (9MRF): Hello Mrs Hardy, thank you for meeting us today. I’m Ria in Year 9. For our first question, we want to know, what is the significance of John Lyon being a co-ed school? Mrs Hardy: The world is co-educational, and times have changed with more and more schools moving away from single-sex classrooms. Now, society has changed, seeing the value of all being educated together.

Jayden (8BRD): Hello Mrs Hardy, thank you for your time today. Thinking about your time, what’s it like being a Head and how does one become a leader? Mrs Hardy: Hello Jayden. Being a Head is fun and never boring. Every day is different, and I enjoy the range and diversity of the people I meet. That is interesting and it feeds your soul. Now, to answer your second question. You become a leader by being brave – being brave enough to take the criticism, having grit, and putting yourself out there. You become a leader by putting a great deal of energy into it.

that our Prep School has been renamed John Lyon School. What is the significance of that? Mrs Hardy: We are now truly working together as an all-through school. We are keen that a child joining our Prep School continues through to the Senior School, avoiding the 11+ entrance examinations, which can be a stressful experience for young children. Now as John Lyon School’s Nursery, Prep, Senior and Sixth Form our pupils can be better looked after and can hit the ground running at each stage. We are stronger as one School. Aditya (9JOC): Why did you decide to join John Lyon? Mrs Hardy: John Lyon is a leading co-ed London school. I knew about the wonderful offerings of the School, as my two previous headships have been in the area. I know the values the John Lyon School espouses and they are very much my values.

Jayden: Thank you, I have a follow-up question. What do you like best about your role?

Aditya: If you had to pick one, which subject would be more important, English or Maths?

We have also seen some dangerous attitudes being put out on social media about men and women, and these views can be better challenged and defused in a healthy environment in a co-educational setting.

Mrs Hardy: The diverse nature of our School community; I find joy in conversations with people and find great pleasure in watching the young grow. I love being in an environment where people are developing, as education is a tool for life.

Ria: As a woman who has graduated from the University of Oxford, what words of inspiration do you have for the girls attending John Lyon School?

Jayden: Speaking of energy, what are your plans for Sports and Athletics at John Lyon?

Mrs Hardy: [Smiling] An unfair question, isn’t it? Both are very important. If I must make a choice, English, because I loved the written word and chose to study History at university, and it’s important we look to learn from the mistakes of humanity. But I am also passionate about Maths teaching and am delighted by the achievements of all our Mathematicians.

Mrs Hardy: One of our key values is to have ambition. So, my advice is to be ambitious. You have exactly the same opportunities as boys. You’ve got to go for it! Ria: I agree! I have a follow-up question. How do you deal with criticism from the School community when making changes?

4

Mrs Hardy: As a leader you are always going to be criticised. I listen, and I am considerate of the dialogue, but ultimately, if you are the leader the responsibility falls on you. You continue to lead. You must be confident and not fearful of making tough decisions. We teach you, our pupils, to become compassionate leaders.

Mrs Hardy: Yes, we have exciting plans, and I’ve met with our Director of Sport, Mr Ling. We are exploring how we will expand our vision. Particularly, I am considering the possibility for the provision of co-ed opportunities, and I am always listening and asking pupils the question ‘what do you want?’ Jayden: It was recently announced

Aditya: What has your first term as Head of John Lyon been like and what has most impressed you about the School so far? Mrs Hardy: How welcoming and respectful the School community has been. Of course, everybody will be nice to the Head, but what I noticed, particularly with the different year groups convening in the New

you do in life you need a sense of perspective so also having patience and humour.

Ria: Amongst the pupils there is a good mix of passion for both sports and political awareness.

Aditya: What do you think of the British Education System?

Aditya: As part of the John Lyon’s Foundation, we are linked with Harrow School and John Lyon’s Charity. How would you explain our relationship as part of the Foundation?

Jadyen: Yes, there are a lot of clubs, and they are diverse. There’s an opportunity for everyone to get involved.

Mrs Hardy: An excellent question! How long do we have?! Many aspects of the British education system are world class – but it is not consistently excellent for all children. There is a postcode lottery, which makes for inconsistency in the quality of education provided to all children. That is what I would seek to provide: consistently excellent education throughout the country.

Mrs Hardy: We are proud to be named after John Lyon, who established Harrow, our sibling school. Our link to John Lyon’s Charity is fantastic as it gives out the most charitable endowments in the country. We speak about the work we are doing as two schools and as a charity to impact the lives of children and society. I want to further educate our School community about this unique partnership.

Ria: What inspired you to become a teacher?

Mrs Hardy: I now have a question for you all. How would you characterise John Lyon School?

Memorial Hall at lunchtimes, is that you are all nice to each other. What most impressed me was your manner towards each other. Being kind to ourselves and to everyone around us is very much my mantra.

Mrs Hardy: Having a passion for your subject, liking being in the company of children and young people. For anything

Jayden: There are lots of opportunities that we can put ourselves forward for.

Ria: Definitely, the classes are diverse too. Our School is friendly, welcoming, and progressive. After our interview we left with an understanding that our voices were heard. It was an experience to ask these questions and to dive into our interests as young aspiring journalists. As a mix of both new and established pupils of John Lyon, we all feel welcomed by our new Head and excited for the future. Written by Ria (9MRF) Thank you to Ms Alexander, our Head of English, for her support in enabling this interview.

Year 7 on the transition to our Senior School Kobi (7NMB) On the transition to Senior School...

Challenges and overcoming them...

The transition has been challenging but also a lot of fun. Some of the biggest changes for me have been having to get up earlier every morning, making sure I get the School coach and ensuring I have all my books and sports kit each day.

I thought finding my way around school was hard to begin with. It felt so big compared to my old school. I was given a map and timetable to help me with this when I started and I have managed to be at all my classes on time so far! Another challenge that I faced was getting used to Teams and OneNote as I have never used these programs before – but after just one half term I have become used to them and I am very familiar with both now.

What I’ve enjoyed so far... Playing sport every day – sometimes twice a day. I have played football for the School team against other schools, joined the swimming club, played fives, ridden a BMX and learned about how having a healthy lifestyle can help me.

6

My top 7 highlights so far... 1. Playing for the School football team 2. Doing different experiments in Chemistry 3. Making new friends 4. Learning a new language 5. Being tested on how much I learn 6. Playing fives for the first time 7. Riding my bike on the Pump Track

Arushi (Old Quaintonian) (7CCN) On the transition to Senior School... Moving around from class to class was something very new as this is something we did not do in Prep School. Thankfully, everyone was helpful and by the end of the first week things became easier. We also have more subjects, which has been a big change! What I’ve enjoyed so far... I am really enjoying the variety of clubs and activities that the Senior School

offers. There’s so much choice! The trip to Longridge was also amazing. It was fun getting to know the other Year 7s and taking part in the activities there. Challenges and overcoming them... Juggling three very similar languages (Spanish, French and Latin) at the same time has been tricky. I struggled at first, but by putting extra time in with my work and with perseverance I’m beginning to find things easier.

My top 7 highlights so far... 1. Trip to Longridge 2. Volunteering for the VEX Robotics competition 3. Playing in hockey matches 4. Joining the squash club and learning how to play a new sport 5. Access to a bigger and wider range of books in the library 6. The chance to learn new languages 7. Being part of the Year 7 choir 7

Outdoor Pursuits Pupils from across year groups had the opportunity to take part in two very different activities this term. In late September, a large group of Year 7 to Year 10 pupils tried their hands at water sports, including canoeing and paddleboarding, at Stanborough Park in Welwyn Garden City. We were extremely lucky with the weather, and everyone had a fantastic day mastering a new sport. Late in the term, 13 pupils spanning Year 7 to Year 10 saddled up for a horse-riding adventure at the London Equestrian Centre. For most this was their first-time on a horse – but any trepidation was soon eased by the animals’ calm and cooperative demeanour, which ensured an easy and enjoyable ride for our new equestrians.

On Wednesday 4th October we had the privilege of attending a concert arranged by the Royal Academy of Music, Mr Furniss and Mr Jones. Performing in our Boyd Campbell Hall, were mezzo-soprano Sophie Benfield and pianist Daniel Silcock.

An audience comprising music scholars and award holders, members of the Pride of Lyon’s, Motet Choir and the Prep Chamber Choir was treated to Sophie’s impressive vibrato and warm, vibrant tone, which was lovely to listen to, as was Daniel’s awesome piano accompaniment.

We were lucky to have had young musicians of such ability come all the way to Harrow-on-the-Hill to share their gifts with us and we thank them for making the time for us. Charlotte (7NMB)

House singing On Thursday 12th October, the annual House Singing Competition energised the School as Butler, Norwood, Vaughan and Moore houses vied for those valuable points. The morning session showcased Senior Songs, a collective performance from Year 9 to Upper Sixth in which Norwood’s rendition of Three Lions set the tone and a very high standard. Lunchtime brought Solo and Part Song events, which were chosen and prepared individually by participating pupils. SPORT

WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR OF SPORT It has, once again, been an extremely busy start to the term for Sport with lots to report; our department motto ‘Sport for All, with the pursuit of Excellence’ has never felt so strong or so apt.

Mr Adam Ling Director of Sport

At the time of writing, we are ranked number one in the Borough for Under 16 Badminton, and our 1st XI and Under 13 football squads reached the last 32 of the Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA) National Cup, which is nationwide. What’s more, some of our pupils have achieved sporting successes outside of School in international Karate, Fencing and Gymnastics, which is great.

Sport at John Lyon is about much more than just medals, though. We can also boast this term that over 75% of all Lower School pupils have competed in at least one competitive sport fixture and my challenge as Director of Sport is to increase that percentage as we progress through the year. I consider myself extremely lucky to work with a dedicated and committed Sports department that includes academic staff to ensure that as many pupils as possible have access to high quality sport and exercise.

Golfing in South Carolina With our pupils already competing in the ISGA and HMC Foursome competitions, as well as friendlies against other schools at our home venue Sandy Lodge, golf is going from strength to strength at John Lyon. Over October half-term, four pupils – Jonny (L6TCF), Racheith (11MWV), Arun (10NJB) and Nathan (10LHF) – had an amazing trip to the USA, travelling to Hilton Head, South Carolina with Head of Maths Mr Muhley to compete in the Huddle Cup against other UK independent schools including Radley College, Uppingham School and our friends from Harrow School.

eventual winners Radley College. This is an outstanding achievement, especially since we were competing against schools with the advantage of their own indoor golf simulators and courses. Thank you to all our parents and guardians for their support and huge congratulations to the pupils on their successes.

With special mentions to: • Racheith, who finished in 3rd position, beating 40 other pupils in the process, including numerous scratch and plus-handicap golfers • Nathan who finished 4th place in the Nett Stapleford competition.

The competition was a terrific opportunity for our pupils to experience the sport at a new level and over the duration of the trip they enjoyed five rounds of golf across Palmetto Dunes Resort and Harbour Town Golf Links, which is host to the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage. John Lyon finished second overall, ahead of Harrow School and Uppingham School and only 0.2 shots behind the

U13 team

Football Football at John Lyon provided over 300 pupils with the opportunity to participate in weekly training as well as competitive fixtures during the Autumn Term. This term has been our most successful season since records began, with our teams collectively securing positive results in over 65% of our fixtures against some very strong opposition. Furthermore, it has been really pleasing to see our U13, U15 and U18 teams progressing exceptionally well within the Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA)

National Cup competitions, with the U13s and U18s reaching the last 32 of the National Cup and our U15s and U18s reaching the last 16 of the ISFA Trophy and Shield competitions respectively. The 1st XI team, led by captain Toby (U6RSK), has produced some excellent performances this term, scoring over 30 goals and securing 7 victories, including a superb 3-2 win in the second round of the National Cup against Highgate School. Other notable performances this term have included the U13s finishing runnersup in the Orley Farm Tournament, the Year 11 team remaining unbeaten, and the

victory against Harrodian School by the U12B side, which included three girls. Further to the representative football matches, the Sports Department is also pleased to report that the recent purchase of portable floodlights has enabled us to expand the provision of football training significantly to allow all C & D team players to keep training through winter. It also means many other sports can continue through the winter months.

Girls’ Hockey This season has seen our programme grow with the addition of another cohort of girls. It has been encouraging to see the enthusiasm for and commitment to hockey from all concerned – not just from new arrivals but also from girls who are well established in our hockey programme. We now have five teams established at A and B level across Years 7 to 9. The girls compete in a competitive fixture schedule, with matches taking place both midweek and on Saturdays. This year,

our year 9s have moved up to 11-a-side from the 7-a-side they’ve been used to in earlier School year-groups. The girls have had the chance to train

weekly throughout the term – and by Christmas we will have completed some 30 fixtures. We look forward to building on these successes and to keeping girls’ hockey at the School evolving.

Badminton Our U16 Badminton team began the defence of their Borough Championships title in fine form earlier this term playing numerous fixtures against schools within Harrow.

The squad, consisting of Sonish (11LCA), Ishan (11CKL), Abishan (11CKL), Lalit (11SCA), Kavin (10WA) and Paaran (10NJB) was victorious in all of its first-round fixtures, in which Sonish and Kavin both managed to end

the evening unbeaten. We are currently ranked Number 1 as we progress to Round 2, which takes place before the Christmas break.

Swimming Over the past few years, we have seen an increase in the number of pupils who regularly take part in squad practices; their dedication to 7.30am swims now means that we have a core of pupils throughout Years 7-10 who have developed to become a truly competitive unit. As we look to further strengthen our swim

programme, we have focused on providing competitive opportunities for swimmers to challenge themselves – both through in-house time trials and, most recently, in our first school swim gala against Latymer Upper. The event proved hugely successful, with almost 50 pupils representing the school. Huge congratulations to all those who recorded a new personal best – and also to Aaran Parmar (10WA) who not only marshalled the swim squad

throughout the tournament, but also won both of his individual events against a strong Year 10 cohort and ensured victory in the 4x25 Medley relay, having come from almost half a length behind his opponent. We look forward to developing our swim provision to provide even more opportunities for those who do not play team sports.

Cross Country Despite the postponement of House Cross Country to the Spring term, our running squad braved the conditions to compete in the first of the Harrow Championships. The first race of the season was at the Harrow ‘Ten Schools’ competition, which saw 15 pupils compete across Junior, Inter and Senior categories on a very muddy course. In an excellent show of resolve, Blake (9AJM) ran an impressive time of 9mins 30 seconds to finish 17th overall in the Junior Boys category, whilst Alex (U6SJA) produced yet another superb performance to complete the 7km course

in 28mins and 44 seconds, finishing in the Top 20 of an extremely competitive field. The Cross Country programme at John Lyon continues to grow, now with six competitions through the Autumn and

Spring terms, which provide our talented athletes with the opportunity to showcase their excellent levels of endurance as they prepare themselves for the Summer term track season.

Pupil successes Whilst the School provides numerous opportunities for sporting success, many of our pupils also enjoy taking part in competitive sports outside the School and, as a Department, we’re all extremely proud of the ever-growing list of our pupils’ sporting accomplishments. If you have taken part in any sporting activity outside the School, we in the Sports Department would love to hear all about your experiences, regardless of the results and outcomes. Over the course of this term, the following pupils have achieved excellence within their own sporting fields. We are proud of their achievements to date and we look forward to seeing all of our pupils develop over the coming years.

Water Polo Before coming to the school, Jacob (9JOC) had no experience of Water Polo, other than seeing his older brother compete for John Lyon. An accomplished swimmer, Jacob soon realised that he also had a talent with the ball and set about joining a local Water Polo Club (Hillingdon Penguins). Through his hard

work and dedication, Jacob was recently selected to represent London in the Inter-Regional Water Polo Championships in Walsall. His aim is to progress to the National Age Group Squad (NAGS) and become a regular competitor in national competitions. Congratulations to Jacob on this achievement.

Gymnastics Congratulations to Lena (8CJC) on achieving the prestigious title of Espoir British Champion in rhythmic gymnastics at the British Championships. Lena’s outstanding performance resulted in her winning Gold in the Free, Hoop and Ribbon events and ultimately securing 1st place overall in the competition.

Fencing Congratulations to Finn (11MVW) who has become the national Under 17 fencing champion. Finn competed in the British Championships in Nottingham and secured a Gold, which takes him one step closer to the European and World Championships next year.

Martial Arts Myla (7RMK) and Inaya (7NMB) belong to the same Karate club (KML, Hillingdon) and regularly compete on the international circuit. Inaya returned from the Banzai Cup in Berlin and, whilst representing England, took Gold in the individual Kumite, making her the new Under 12 Champion and picked up Silver in Kata. She went on to collect two Gold medals and one Silver in the International Elite Open Championships and earned a Bronze in the Central England Championships! Myla won Gold in the individual Kumite in Worcester in the Central International Championships, where she saw off competition over five rounds to become the second Under 12 International Champion.

LYONIAN ASSOCIATION

The Lyonian Association is the community for current and former pupils, their families, staff and friends of John Lyon. It is our platform for collaboration, networking and support as we work towards building on the School’s heritage and strengths for current and future generations. In this section of the magazine, we highlight the Association’s work supporting the School’s activities as well as the latest news and events across our alumni family. As ever, we are grateful for our alumni’s continuous support. Several Old Lyonians have generously contributed their time to various events this term, including a range of career talks, our Goldhawk Lecture Programme for Lower and Upper Sixth pupils and a tailored careers convention. We extend our sincere thanks to all of them for giving back to our John Lyon School community. It has been great for the School to connect with many of its alumni and we would love for even more of you throughout the alumni network to get involved.

Our recent exclusive event to introduce John Lyon’s 1876 Fund to new parents and guardians was a real success. Parents/guardians welcomed hearing about the Fund’s purpose and aims and we were pleased that feedback was very positive. On the back of this, we thought that this issue of the magazine was a good opportunity to highlight once again to the rest of the School community the value and importance of this Fund and how you can get involved and help. The Fund supports projects, equipment and facilities that go beyond the School’s standard curriculum and departmental budgets to enhance the School’s learning provision, leaving a positive impact on current and future pupils’ educational journeys.

News Alumni return as esteemed judges John Lyon hosted the season opener of the 2023-2024 VEX Robotics season and we were lucky to have two Old Lyonians, Jonathan Amah (OL 2016) and Daniel Guirgis (OL 2018), now working in Engineering, join us for the event. They took centre stage as judges and mentors for the competing teams.

Jonathan is a Design and Regulatory Engineer for De Soutter Medical. He embarked on an impressive journey after John Lyon, pursuing Mechanical Engineering with Professional Development at Brunel University and later an MSc in Medical Engineering at Imperial College.

Daniel is a Design Engineer at McLaren Automotive Ltd. He made his mark following his studies at John Lyon School and his academic pursuits include studies in Mechanical Engineering at Swansea University, followed by a Masters Degree in Automotive Engineering from Cranfield.

The Career Mentor by James Taylor James Taylor (OL 2003), a seasoned business professional with over 15 years’ experience in both public and private sectors and regular mentor for our current pupils, has released a new book The Career Mentor. James’ book has been referred to as a ‘career satnav’, offering invaluable guidance on how to achieve career milestones and personal fulfilment. The book will be available for purchase on Amazon from Monday 18th December.

A Message from Australia Writing from Sydney, it is difficult to convey the amount of help John Lyon has given me in facilitating a gap year adventure. With special thanks to Mrs Bamrah, Careers Adviser, who reached out to our Australian members of the Old Lyonian Association and put me in touch with former pupil, Nicholas Smart (OL 2000). Nicholas has helped me settle in a new city and provided me with a foot in the door by helping me secure work that is engaging and enjoyable. I encourage anyone and everyone to travel during a gap year, if the opportunity presents itself, particularly with the global Old Lyonian network behind them. Aaron Esser (OL 2023)

We’re very sad to announce that Lindsay Irvine, former John Lyon School staff member of 33 years, passed away on Saturday 8th July 2023. Lindsay began his career at John Lyon in September 1977 as Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages, teaching German and French, and later went on to become Head of German as well as the Assistant Head of Sixth Form. During his time at the School, Lindsay organised numerous trips, including overseas exchanges and study visits both in the UK and abroad. He was also responsible for the

Stuart Miles, member of staff at the school from 1996 to 2015, and latterly the Senior Deputy Head, said, ‘Lindsay was an extraordinarily popular member of staff and a hugely respected member of the Common Room who was greatly supportive of all the students he taught.’ The entire School community is extremely grateful for his 33 years of commitment and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Shyam Borkhatria (OL 2020) Graduate Sports Assistant, John Lyon School 1. W hat have you done since leaving John Lyon? After leaving John Lyon in 2020, I attended the University of Nottingham to read Economics and Philosophy. Alongside my academic endeavours, I have played regular club cricket and have travelled and volunteered in various parts of the world such as Mumbai and Marrakesh. I have since returned to work at John Lyon School! 2. W hat made you want to return to John Lyon? After graduating, I had some time to think about what I wanted to do. Rather than going straight into an office-based desk role, I thought it would be a great opportunity to give back to the School community, which has made me who I am today. The John Lyon community has always been a family and so I knew I’d have a warm welcome. 3. W hat advice would you give to a new Year 7? Always say “yes” to any opportunities that may arise in school life. Whether it be auditioning for the School musical or staying after school for house swimming, just say “yes” as it provides an opportunity for you to grow as a person and potentially find something new that you love.

4. What subjects or extra-curricular activities did you enjoy when you were a pupil and how has this impacted who you are today? When I was a pupil, I took part in both football and cricket teams alongside the School musical. Taking part allowed me to broaden my horizons, become more confident in myself and improve my teamworking skills. Though academic education is incredibly important, without extra-curricular activities I wouldn’t have been able to build these skills, which I use daily and will use for the rest of my life. 5. What has been your fondest memory from John Lyon? The 2016 sports tour to South Africa is a memory I will never forget. Heading halfway across the world with my friends and teammates to play four fixtures of cricket and four football fixtures was a time few people would have the privilege to experience. From the food to the weather, to the vibrant culture, to the coaching staff, it was truly an amazing experience. The only con was losing my glasses in the sea! At least I learnt a valuable lesson – not to wear them when entering the water!

Careers Careers in Finance Our Careers in Finance event was a great success with employees from a range of organisations in attendance, sharing their experiences of working in finance with pupils and parents/guardians. A very big thanks to returning Old Lyonians Ankit Patel (OL 2012), Jamie Karia (OL 2012), Kishan Patel (OL 2005) and Scott Wilsher (OL 2013), who shared their experiences and journeys into Deutsche Bank, BlackRock, KPMG and Centrus respectively, as well as Manisha Meghani, Mohammed Basharat (both from HSBC) and Roshni Raikundalia (NatWest) for supporting us at the event.

34

The event was an excellent opportunity for us to learn from experienced members of the finance industry. We were fortunate to have detailed talks and discussions with experts from a broad range of companies including Deutsche Bank, Centrus, Blackrock, KPMG, HSBC and NatWest. Personally, this was a brilliant experience as it enhanced my knowledge about what

you could do with finance, investment banking, banking and all the different pathways you could take to be successful in this industry. The talk gave me a strong insight into the preparations pupils would need to take, such as work experience and potential apprenticeships, to have the best chance of being successful in the industry whilst also enjoying the work in this fascinating sector. Sunjay (11TM)

We welcomed over 25 employers from a wide range of industries from architecture to media at our Careers Convention for Sixth Form pupils. The event was an opportunity for pupils to have meaningful career discussions and connect with professionals – the presence of a diverse group of industry representatives truly made it a valuable learning experience, which will serve them well in their future.

LYONIAN ASSOCIATION

Sixth Form Careers Convention It is these industry experts who really make the event a success and we are grateful for the enthusiasm and engagement of the companies and organisations represented. It was heart-warming to see several Old Lyonians return to the School to support the event and the reunion. It is always special for both pupils and staff to see and welcome former students. Our thanks in particular to: • Zak Samak (OL 2019) - Architect • Cameron Sanghera (OL 2018) - Recruitment at Tempting Talent • Shilan Mistry (OL 2018) - Business Development at Gamma • Mantej Kambo (OL 2018) - Finance Manager, Deloitte • Joshal Pattni (OL 2017) - Real Estate • Tyler Stanley-Owusu (OL 2017) - Performance Marketeer at Kittl • Joshua Banks (OL 2014) - Procurement Manager at Volkswagen Group • Nandesh Patel (OL 2012) - Medical Officer at British Army • Alex Doey (OL 2012) - Mechanical Engineer at Red Engineering • Matthew Keliris-Thomas (OL 2011) - Barrister • Ben Sehovi (OL 2007) - Founder at CEO of Opfyx, former Airline Professional at British Airways • James Taylor (OL 2003) - Finance and Investment and Author

Exploring careers Exploring careers through work experience is an important part of a pupil’s journey in Sixth Form. Our careers adviser collaborates closely with the alumni and teaching teams to guide pupils towards relevant opportunities aligned with their interests. Three pupils recently delved into cardiology, events management and media, and foreign exchange. Their feedback on these experiences was incredibly positive and emphasised the value of practical experience in helping them choose their career paths.

I had a fantastic week at Luton and Dunstable hospital with a leading cardiologist, Dr Sadat Edroos. I shadowed him and other consultants on ward rounds and also had the opportunity to watch multiple operations. My time at the hospital was a real eye opener and the experience has made me even more keen to pursue this route. Arian (U6SJA)

I was fortunate enough to join a company called Visions Events Mgt, where I helped create video presentations for a music award event and helped to organise film shoots. It was a thoroughly inspiring time and I now have a clear insight into this creative industry. Danyal (U6MEW)

My internship at Transfer Connex as a Client Acquisition Analyst was very enlightening as I had the opportunity to get involved in many aspects of foreign exchange, including analysing data and methodically researching market trends to build attractive proposals for potential clients. This experience has given me a lot to take away – and I have also left with a thorough awareness of the financial industry’s complexities. Sarim (U6MEW)
