SPEAKERS Mr Julian Carrera, Head of Geography Who killed the LA river Julian Carrera joined The John Lyon School as Head of Geography in September 2021, having worked in schools in South West Hertfordshire for the previous 14 years. Prior to teaching he occupied the role of Campaigns Director at the NGO War Child, improving the lives of children growing up in conflict zones, and before that he worked in public relations in the UK music industry. It is in this role that he accidentally “discovered” the Los Angeles River! When he is not teaching, Mr Carrera (a lifelong sufferer of Watford FC and Surrey CCC) is never happier than when he is exploring a new part of a new city on foot, crate digging for lost gems in record stores, or building a skyline out of Lego with his sons Joshua and Louis.

Ahwaan Sharma, Year 10 pupil Connected Communities Ahwaan is in Year 10, and he is passionate about making a change in the community and just to give a little background about himself, for the last 10+ years he has been associated with multiple initiatives, involving activities which has brought a difference to his close knit community. Starting with primary school life, he was in the schools Eco Council, and was an active member in it, and brought up ideas and initiatives that aided him in achieving the Eco Schools Green Flag Award. In Primary school he was in his School Council where he and his peers in the Council worked together to organize all kinds of activities that are still in place there today, like the Charity Fun Run for example. Currently at John Lyon he is in the school council too, and is hoping to achieve something beneficial for the school.

Communities have always played a key role in his life, and now with the issue of climate change he believes he could play a key role in saving this planet too.

Aly Azzawi, Year 7 pupil Is it a climate change? Aly is in Year 7 and a music scholar at John Lyon School. He has been playing on the guitar and piano since the age of seven, and is a member of Harrow guitar ensemble. Also, he has a deep passion for sciences and contributed to several scientific essays, which were published on prominent platforms, such as apple books, and google books. He believes that protecting our planet and environment is his top academic and social priority. Aly likes to play table tennis, swimming, birdwatching, and he is working towards becoming a national chess master.

Mr Joshua Carr, Teacher of Chemistry The different shades of Hydrogen Joshua Carr has been a Teacher of Chemistry at John Lyon for four years. He has a particular interest in green chemistry and renewable technologies. He is also the HPQ co-ordinator and an Excellence Team Leader at John Lyon.

Basel Raja, Year 11 pupil Space Junk Basel is a curious Year 11 pupil who is highly academically engaged and has a strong desire to delve in and learn new things. He has a


craving to understand each of his subjects so that he can truly appreciate them. Alongside his academic studies, Basel also has an interest in music and plays musical instruments, the piano and drums, in his spare time. To show off his musical skill, he also takes opportunities to play in various concerts throughout the school.

Amaroo Brown, Year 7 pupil How to Integrate Sustainability into Community Since the beginning of Amaroo’s career at John Lyon, he has felt the urge to participate in many different events, both academic and musical. He has a huge interest in music, learning both piano and violin, as well as singing. He is in John Lyon’s elite singing group, The Pride of Lyons. He has also made a good start to his academic ventures, aiming high and learning from any mistakes. His hobbies include music, reptile-keeping, and learning. He loves to learn, especially about current issues (such as climate change) and how we can fix them.

Mrs Bev Baker, Resident of the Hill, Mental Health Coach How to be irresistible? Bev Baker is a psychotherapist, hypnotherapist, motivational speaker, business coach, trainer and writer. She has worked in over 40 counties and on four continents and has trained and coached thousands of people across the globe. Her clients include: The Microsoft and the Intel Corporations, The Royal Navy, Carriers Global, UiPath and Kingston University to name but a few. Since 2018 she has been reinventing herself as a mental health and personal development coach. She is a Harrow-on-the-Hill dweller and dog walker.

Lucas Antoni, Lower Sixth student Are electric cars really better for the environment and are there better solutions? Lucas is currently in the Lower Sixth, studying Maths, Further Maths, Physics, and Economics. He is an aspiring engineer with a great interest in cars and motorsports. Tonight, he will be raising awareness about an important misconception many people have about electric cars.

Madisan Nimalathasan, Year 9 pupil Let’s save ‘our’ planet! Now in his third year at John Lyon, Madisan Nimalathasan lists passions for Maths, English, All three sciences and his humanities, which he sees as a combination of many disciplines. A keen academic, he enjoys classroom learning as well as other opportunities available to him. He is passionately curious about the world around him, which can be seen as an excellent attribute. He spoke at Talks-on-the-Hill in 2020 and has taken part in numerous drama and musical productions. He also has written for the John Lyon blog and he aspires to become a doctor.


Talks-on-the-Hill COMMUNITY AND ENVIRONMENT Thursday 3rd February 2022 6.00 - 7.30pm Talks-on-the-Hill is an event that brings together the John Lyon School Community as well as the Harrow-on-the-Hill Community. This event will see a series of Academic Talks delivered over two sessions, by Experts, teachers, students and residents of the Hill.
