WELCOME FROM HEAD OF YEAR 7 The transition from primary to secondary school is an important milestone in the lives of children and their families. At John Lyon we pride ourselves on our pastoral care and have a robust system to ensure all pupils have a successful transition. We want all new pupils to get used to their new routines and school organisation with great ease; develop new friendships, build on their confidence and quickly settle into life at a secondary school. The range of academic subjects in Year 7 is wide, augmented by extracurricular clubs and activities that ensure an early interest in learning is fostered. As the pupils’ Head of Year, I will oversee the transition that your child makes this year and together with the tutor team, we will be there to support you and your child throughout the forthcoming year. Since joining the Sports Department in 2013, I have had the pleasure of not only teaching Physical Education, but also being part of the Pastoral Team as a Head of Year for the past two years, leading Butler house to victory in the House Cup in 2021 and organising the School’s Football and Athletics programmes as part of the extensive list of Extra-Curricular running throughout the year. I would certainly recommend to all pupils joining the School to really look to engage in all the exciting Extra-Curricular opportunities the school has to offer; as not only may they find new activities they enjoy, but it is also an excellent way of developing new skills, embracing the Schools Values and bringing the whole school community together. I look forward to working with you and your children during such a pivotal and defining year; should you have any enquiries or require assistance throughout the year please do not hesitate to contact us. From September, in the first instance, enquiries should generally be directed to your child’s form tutor who should be your main point of contact. Expectations, Rewards and Sanctions Excellence is recognised and rewarded at the John Lyon School. We regularly celebrate achievement, ambition and resolve; and your child will have the opportunity to gain prizes, commendations and merits for exhibiting such attributes. Merits are recorded throughout the year and pupils will earn awards for the number they accumulate. If a pupil produces work of outstanding quality that is well above their normal standard, in terms of either effort or achievement,
they will be awarded a School Commendation, worth five Merits. There are plenty of opportunities for your child to gain rewards and I hope to see them take full advantage of these. It is also a requirement that your children abide by the school rules and adhere to our School’s Code of Conduct. If there is an infringement of these, your child will receive a demerit, detention, or other appropriate sanction. It is important to note that the receipt of three demerits in one week will lead to a detention. Two instances of lateness in a week will also result in an early registration sanction. Detentions during the school day may also be set at either lunchtime or break time for misbehaviour in class. You will also find within this booklet a copy of the School’s Sports Charter which provides further details of the School’s expectations regarding Saturday sports fixtures. Enrichment As mentioned above, the John Lyon School has a wealth of clubs and activities available to your child and I would certainly encourage them to take part in something new or unfamiliar to them. It is expected that all Year 7 pupils take part in a minimum of two activities a term, as many transferable and social skills are learnt outside of the classroom. The tutor team and I will continually remind the pupils of this requirement throughout the year and encourage you to support them with this. A full list of activities available to Year 7 pupils will be made available upon their arrival to school in September; however, in the meantime please do visit the school’s website for further information. It is not only fundamental that the pupils take part in a range of activities, but that you also support your children in their endeavours. The School hosts a wide range of events throughout the year to showcase the pupils’ excellence from music ensembles and art shows to drama performances and sporting fixtures; and your attendance is instrumental to the success of these. With your support, we can continue to build our school community and foster excellence within our pupils. Mr Rob Rice Head of Year 7 RAR@johnlyon.org
SCHOOL PROCEDURES Absence from School
Planned • P lanned absence should be applied for using the ‘Leave Request’ link on the Parent Portal. Applications for missing part of and up to one day need to be made at least 24 hours in advance of the absence and can be granted by the Head of Year. If an application is being made within 24 hours, applications for absence will have to be made directly to the Head of Year, with a copy sent to absence@johnlyon.org. • P lanned absence for longer than one day requires the consent of the Head and therefore must be made at least 7 days in advance via the same link in the Parent Portal.
Unplanned
• W hen a pupil is absent without prior notification e.g. through illness, parents are requested to leave a written message, either via the Parent Portal ‘Absence Form’ link or by email (absence@ johnlyon.org.) before 8.30 a.m. on each day of absence. If a pupil is absent from registration and we have received no communication from parents, the school will contact parents by telephone to establish the pupil’s whereabouts. • F or long term absence any communication should be received within the first three days of absence. This covers the government’s regulations relating to truancy and the School’s responsibility for pupils in its care. Pupils in Years 7-11 may not leave the School site during school hours, unless written permission is given for them to do so. If a pupil in Years 7-11 needs to leave school because of a planned absence, they must wait in Reception to be collected by a parent or guardian and sign out via the Live Register system. If/when a pupil returns, they will be required to sign back in to the Live Register system in Reception. If the parent or guardian is unable to collect the pupil, formal written consent for them to leave unaccompanied must be sent to absence@johnlyon. org. before they will be permitted to leave the School premises. School Day Timings - Registration 8.30am - Lessons finish at 4.00pm
Lateness Procedure
Pupils arriving after the register has been taken should go straight to Reception and sign themselves in using the Live Register system. If a pupil fails to register their lateness, and there has been no notification of a planned or unplanned absence, parents will be contacted to confirm their whereabouts. This may lead to anxiety on the part of the parents and therefore it is most important that the correct lateness procedure is followed. A pupil arriving late twice in a week will receive a lunchtime detention. A pupil who is late five or more times in a half term will be required to pre-register with the Head of Year at 8.15am every morning for two weeks. Failure to attend pre-registration or further late arrival at school will result in a pupil being removed from lessons and being sent home.
In Class
Pupils should stand when a member of staff enters the classroom, unless instructed otherwise. Pupils must arrive punctually for lessons and must bring the relevant text books, exercise books and all necessary equipment, including their computer device. If a pupil anticipates missing a class because of a music lesson, or for any other reason, they must ask the permission of the teacher concerned at least 24 hours in advance. Whenever pupils miss a lesson, they must arrange to catch up with the work they have missed (including homework) in their own time. Homework is set electronically through MS Teams Assignments, to which all pupils have access, so catching up when absent is straightforward.
SCHOOL PROCEDURES Travelling to School by the School Coach Service All bookings for the School Coach Service can be made via a bespoke website: johnlyon.vectare.co.uk
marked. Harrow Borough operate controlled parking restrictions around the School. Please note these currently operate between the hours of 10am and 2pm. Traffic wardens are prevalent, and tickets will be issued during these times.
All enquiries relating to the service should be submitted using the Contact Us section of the above website.
The School implements a voluntary one-way system in order to reduce traffic congestion. We urge everyone to drive up Middle Road and out via either Crown Street or Byron Hill Road so that all traffic is going the same way. We appreciate the efforts made by parents in helping us to ensure that Middle Road remains as traffic-free, and therefore as safe, as possible. Please see the map below.
Delivering and Collecting Pupils During term time Middle Road and the adjoining streets can experience severe traffic congestion, particularly at the beginning, or near the end, of the academic day given the number of Schools in and around the Hill. Parents are requested, if possible, to find alternative locations when dropping their children and/or collecting them from the School. Whitmore Road and Lower Road are two such possibilities. Please also avoid parking in the restricted areas outside the School entrance, which are clearly

SCHOOL MANAGED DEVICES (SMD) Dear Parent / Guardian, It is with great excitement that we welcome your child to join the School Managed Device (SMD) programme at John Lyon. As part of the equipment needed to take part in lessons and to get the most out of their learning at John Lyon, all pupils are required to bring their SMD to school every day. Devices have provided an exciting opportunity so far for the School to develop a new style of education which better fulfils the needs of an increasingly digital world and workplace. This will of course not replace handwriting skills and written work completely, especially while examinations are still completed in this style. We are delighted that John Lyon was recognised for its digital provision in the EdTech 50 publication from the Education Foundation, listing the top 50 schools in the UK who are using digital technology in education. (For more information please see http://www.ednfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/EDTECH-50SCHOOLS-2019.pdf ) Is it essential to join the programme? How do I join? Yes, all new pupils in September 2022 will require a SMD. Parents of new pupils will already have purchased their device using the School’s online portal. What are the expectations of the School Managed Device (SMD) programme? All pupils in school will require a SMD, bringing this device to lessons is compulsory. The School expects this device should be one of the specified models, purchased through the School portal. Parents are responsible for insuring the device, with insurance included in the initial purchase. The device remains the property of the pupil and parents.
Where pupils purchase a device through the School portal and have valid insurance, the IT Department will provide support in the case of loss or damage. This includes administrating insurance claims or repairs and providing a similar replacement device in the interim. The School undertakes to manage software updates, anti-virus and insurance arrangements for SMDs. The pupil is responsible for the condition of the SMD brought to school. SMDs should be charged outside of school. SMDs should be capable of lasting a full day without recharging. The School will manage controls on the device regarding which software/apps are able to be installed on it. The School will monitor SMD devices during the School Day. Can you give me some examples of how the devices will be used? Examples include but are not limited to: checking School emails and the School’s Virtual Learning Environments and Microsoft Teams to plan their work and club commitments; contributing to and collaborating on shared online documents such as a set of class notes in OneNote; accessing educational multimedia; completing digital quizzes; updating reflective logs during tutor periods; completing questionnaires; accessing web-based learning resources. Will my child’s device be secure? All pupils are assigned lockers in which they can safely lock away their belongings. The CCTV system covers all lockers that are in public areas. All devices will be required to be password protected using our security settings.
SCHOOL MANAGED DEVICES (SMD) What is OneNote and how will the School use it? Microsoft OneNote works like an electronic ring-binder to store and record all notes, images, to-do lists and other material. OneNote notebooks can be synchronised offline to laptops and mobile devices such that pupils can access them from multiple devices. Some teachers will use OneNote to deliver lessons; pupils will have access to these notes as well as being able to collaborate with each other in shared areas of the notebooks. How will you help keep my child safe online? The School has a comprehensive firewall system to monitor and filter incoming and outgoing usage through the School network. When using the School WiFi, the content your pupil accesses online is filtered to prevent him from accessing inappropriate content for their age. The School has a comprehensive firewall system to monitor and filter incoming and outgoing usage through the School network. Likewise, when your child uses a School device, their screen is monitored remotely and access to material deemed inappropriate, or a cause for concern, will be sent to, and dealt with, by a Senior Teacher. Whilst we can filter internet content accessed on site, our main aim is to educate your child about the benefits and dangers of internet use. The various dangers and negative online trends amongst teenagers are addressed in regular assemblies, tutor time and PSCHE sessions. We also recognise that in a digital world there are also many positives to be found in building a Digital Footprint as many businesses and Universities now perform online audits on each applicant before offering positions and places. It has therefore a key focus of ours to encourage every pupil in every year group to begin creating and building a positive online reputation for themselves so they can be safe in the knowledge that their Digital Footprint will impress future Universities and potential employers.
Does the School have an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for pupils? Yes. To help keep your child safe on the internet they are required to sign and adhere to an Acceptable Use Policy that stipulates when, where and how they can use their device in School. A condition of this policy is that 3G/4G is not to be used inside School; pupils should only use School WiFi to access online material. This is extremely important as it allows us to use a range of software to monitor and filter the content they can access. A copy of the AUP can be found in the ‘Policies’ section of the Parent Portal. Will my child spend too much time looking at a digital device screen? We will actively encourage the use of technology to aid learning and complete work in School, but we also understand that pupils should maintain healthy levels of screen-time and socialise with their friends. To promote a healthy use of devices pupils are encouraged to attend at least two of the many clubs on offer. To reinforce this positive approach to devices and support your child to use technology positively at home, we must ensure we work together to foster good habits. We suggest you also encourage devices to be used for work purposes, but advise you to create boundaries at home as to where technology is used. For example, we would advocate that you do not allow phones in the bedroom, or at the dinner table and that you make use of the parental control features available on most devices. Parental support and boundaries alongside our own rules will help to ensure their use of devices is monitored, constructive and healthy.
SCHOOL MANAGED DEVICES (SMD) Do you know of any useful online safety resources for parents? Yes. The links below contain much useful information. Guidance such as this is also saved on the Parent Portal. Internet Matters: www.internetmatters.org/advice NSPCC: www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/ keep- ing-children-safe/online-safety Safer Internet: www.saferinternet.org.uk/advice-centre/parents-and-carers Childnet: www.childnet.com/resources/supporting-young-people-online Thinkuknow: www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents Should you have queries regarding your child’s device please feel free to direct them towards me (JEH@johnlyon.org) or to your child’s Tutor in September. Drop in sessions will be offered to new pupils in the Digital Hub during the school day in September, should they need help using their device in the early stages of term. It is through this collaborative approach between parents and the School that we hope pupils can learn how to use technology safely and with the greatest educational benefit. I look forward to welcoming your child to John Lyon in September. Yours sincerely, Dr J Honeysett Head of Digital Learning

The Hockey session is specifically for girls (boys hockey will be in the Spring Term). Please arrive promptly; correctly dressed in the School sports clothing with the full School tracksuit; bring both studded or moulded boots and non-studded sports footwear (to be used on the astro-turf if required); shin pads; full training kit and plenty of fluid in your own drinking bottle.
PRE-SEASON TRAINING It is a condition of participation in the John Lyon School Sporting Programme that coaches, players and parents abide by and accept the John Lyon Sports Charter without exception. Football is the largest participation sport at John Lyon; and with over 21 teams competing throughout the Autumn and Spring Terms, competition for places in the teams is high. John Lyon School appoints experienced teachers and qualified coaches to take charge of its teams and make selection decisions. It is therefore requested that these selections are respected in the knowledge that the selection process is a continuous assessment, which allows for movement of pupils within teams to ensure they are selected for squads best suited to their current level of ability. It is also requested that any pupils keen on representing the school teams, in the first instance, who are not able to attend the pre-season training should inform either Mr Rice (RAR@johnlyon.org) or Mr Ling (ASL@johnlyon.org) via email for Football and Hockey respectively. Hockey Mouthguards It is a requirement for all pupils playing hockey to have and use a mouthguard and shin pads during training and for matches. Therefore, all girls will require a mouthguard and shinpads from the start of term. The Sports Department will issue and provide each girl with a custom fit OPRO mouthguard on Saturday 3rd September and/or during their first session on Monday 5th September.
Sports Glasses Following recent recommendations from The Football Association (FA) and England Hockey, to ensure the safety of all its pupils whilst playing sport, John Lyon requires all pupils who wear prescriptive glasses during competition to wear polycarbonate sports glasses. These glasses should be secured tightly to the player’s head by an elasticated sports band, and not the traditional temple piece frames; however, it is important to stress that although these types of sports lenses are intended to offer the best level of protection available, there is always the possibility that the wearer may sustain an eye or facial injury due to severe impact or because of the nature of athletic activity. Should pupils feel uncomfortable wearing sports glasses, they do also have the option of wearing contact lenses.

Representative Sport Policy It is an honour and a privilege to be selected to represent the School and with this comes a number of responsibilities, both on and off the pitch. Sporting fixtures provide a wealth of community spirit and enjoyment for the boys, staff and spectating parents. In order to ensure all sports teams are as competitive as possible, the following expectations from the School, boys and parents are outlined below. We the John Lyon School will: • Ensure that the same passion, enthusiasm and commitment that the Games/PE staff have is shared and embodied through the sporting ethos of John Lyon School. • Provide the structure for enjoyable, fun and competitive opportunities to enhance the sporting aims and ethos of John Lyon School and promote the School Values. • Create opportunities to encourage leadership, teamwork and cooperation. • Provide a safe and enjoyable environment for all players to be involved. • Select pupils to participate for any representative teams based on attendance at training sessions, extra-curricular sports clubs and commitment to school sport in general. Selection will be based on talent and enthusiasm. • Ensure that all pupils are safe and enjoy the highs and lows of regular competitive and non-competitive school sport. • Publish team sheets on the fixture notice boards, the School website and SOCS well in advance of fixtures. Pupils will be responsible for checking these places for their inclusion in teams. • Ensure that team sheets will contain all details of the fixture and indicate when pupils should meet, where the fixture is and approximately what time we should return to school. • Publish fixtures in the School’s termly Blue Diary, and ensure these are updated on the School website and be available through SOCS. • Always be available for communication through the email address of the head of each sport and or the Director of Sport’s office phone or email.
I the Sports Performer will: • Embody the sporting ethos of John Lyon School and will always endeavour to try my best. • Ensure that I regularly attend sports training and extra-curricular clubs and demonstrate a personal commitment to School sport. Should I be unable to attend, I will notify the respective member of staff prior to the session. • Enjoy the game by respecting the officials and coaches, and accepting the judgement of the officials. • Recognise fair play and congratulate good performances by both teammates and the opposition. • Play in the spirit of the game demonstrating good sportsmanship. • On being selected to play for a school team, ensure that I read the notice and notify my parents of the fixture and ask them to check the website or contact the PE Department for further details if needed. • Make sure that I have all my equipment and be attired in the correct clothing and kit for all training and fixtures. • If I am unable to play for any reason, let the member of Games/PE Staff know as soon as possible in order that another student may be selected instead. • Always try my hardest and represent John Lyon to the best of my ability. • Catch up on any work I may have missed during the course of a fixture.
I the Parent/Carer will: • Support the sporting ethos of the School and encourage our young people to lead active and healthy lives, particularly through supporting their attendance at training and fixtures. • Encourage and promote participation in sport and extra-curricular opportunities that our children are interested in. • Support our son’s involvement and help them to enjoy their sport, whilst encouraging and guiding him to accept responsibility for his own performance and behaviour. • Check the School Blue Diary, School website and or SOCS for details about forthcoming fixtures and will contact the Games/PE Department if I have any queries or questions. • Give permission for my child to attend fixtures if and when selected and will support them in catching up any missed work. • Contact the Games/PE staff giving prior notice of unavailability for any fixture with the expectation that if selected my son will participate unless in extraordinary circumstances. • Notify the Games/PE staff at the earliest opportunity with regard illness or injury that may affect selection of any team, prior to the fixture. • Support and spectate at any fixtures in a positive and appropriate manner allowing the coaching staff and officials to perform their roles effectively. The above points are essential standards associated with the John Lyon sporting culture; it is what we all want sport to be. In effect it represents a code of conduct for our community and is intended to be inclusive of all.

LEARNING SUPPORT - SCREENING AT ENTRY SEPTEMBER 2022 Screening
On entering the School, new pupils in the lower year groups take two short tests (Screening at Entry papers) as well as a Reading Comprehension test. These are not diagnostic tests. The two short tests are designed to help alert us to potential learning difficulties. Screening tests are not competitive and no specific preparation is required.

A decision is eventually made with the parents as to whether a pupil might benefit from being placed on the Learning Support Register. A pupil on the Learning Support Register will have a Learning Support Pupil Profile advising subject teachers of strengths, needs as well as strategies for support at school and at home. A pupil may also be offered targeted Learning Support provision.

The Learning Support Pupil Profile highlights areas of strengths and weaknesses discussed with the pupil as well as a summary of needs and strategies. It is circulated to the subject teachers, the Form Tutor as well as Head of Year who can also access the information through the Learning
PARENTPAY The School ‘Deli-card’ and ParentPay
When a pupil joins the School, they will receive their ‘deli-card’ from the School office. Each card is unique to each pupil. The card is a form of ID for the pupils, but it can also be used in a similar way as a bank debit card for purchasing items from the breakfast and breaktime menu. It is also a means for pupils to operate the printing facilities in School and for signing into our Live Register system (if they ever need to leave School early i.e. for medical appointment or arrive later than the normal registration time). The card is therefore a particularly important piece of School equipment and we would ask you to remind your child to keep their card very safely. In order to add funds to the deli-card, should your child wish to purchase breakfast and/or snacks items, the School uses a convenient secure online service called ParentPay. Some of you may well already be familiar with ParentPay as it is widely used in many schools across the country. The aim is to offer a simple and more convenient way for parents to top up their child’s deli-card and to significantly reduce the need for our pupils to carry cash or cheques to School. Parents can also currently use the ParentPay service to top up their child’s printing account and to purchase a replacement deli-card. The School will periodically add other items which can be purchased via ParentPay and we will keep you updated as and when this happens. If the card is lost, please contact the Central Administration Team to notify us immediately.
Parent Pay Activation
Very shortly after their first day in school, all new pupils will be given a letter to take home to parents. We will notify you to let you know that your child has been given the letter. This letter will contain personal activation details to enable you to set up your ParentPay account. Due to security restrictions, we are not permitted
to email these details over to you. Your secure online account will be activated using a unique username and password; you will be prompted to change these on your first login, and to keep them safe and secure. Once you have activated your account you can make online payments straight away. We ask parents to allow at least 48 hours for us to receive the payment and for the funds to be added to your child’s card ready for them to purchase their snack items. A good time to top up for the forthcoming week would be a Thursday, so funds are ready on Monday. You can top up as much as you want though, for example to cover a month, and we can set a daily spend limit if you would like to send a request to the Central Administration Team. You will be able to monitor how your child is spending their ‘snack’ money and your balance via your ParentPay account. For any general queries regarding the deli-card, setting daily limits, statements of spend etc please contact the Central Administration Team at CAT@johnlyon.org or call the team on 0208 515 9400. For further information on ParentPay and answers to Frequently Asked Questions, visit www.parentpay.com.
