Debbie Green 5K Run/Walk Marks Its 22 Year By RICK THORP WHEELING — Ron Green finds himself working the phones a lot more these days. As director of the Debbie Green Memorial 5K Run/ Walk for Leukemia, Green has been touch with runners and walkers near and far as race days — Aug. 2 and 3 — approaches. But while the event, in its 22nd year, continues to have a more national and international flavor, the fact isn’t lost on the Benwood native that the race is a local one benefiting local people. “It’s nice to have runners from all around the world,” he said, “but, ultimately, I want to treat them all the same. “Whether you’re from Kenya and are one of the top runners in the world or you’re from down the street from where I live, I want to treat everyone the same.” Registrations will be accepted through race day for events that begin on Friday night with the Green Mile Run/Walk at 7 p.m. Saturday features the Debbie’s Dash Kids’ race at 6 p.m., followed by the main event at 7. “We’re pretty excited,” Green said about the events, sponsored by Kalkreuth. “We have a pretty fast field coming in, and some of the past winners are coming in.” That list includes Mourad Mafout, the 2013 winner. Green is also excited about the arrival of Lawrence Kipkoech, an all-American runner from Campbell. “It’s been amazing,” he said. “I’ve been getting calls from all over the place.” American Garrett Kenyon is another runner Green is eager to see run the downtown Wheeling course, along with female standout Esther Wanjiru. “And you just never know who’ll come in at the last minute,” he said. “The Race for a Reason” began to honor Green’s sister, Debbie, who lost her battle against leukemia at age 7 in 1972. Debbie’s death provided the inspiration for the race, selected as the Road Runners Club of America 5K National Championship race three times. “We started this race to help local kids with cancer,” Green stressed, noting two youths from Belmont County will be aided this year. “Having these people from throughout the world come here and having your sister’s name out there everywhere is amazing. “When I started this, I never thought we’d have run-

We’ve had women that went 1-2 in the Olympics.” Green has also had a wide-range of local runners cross his finish line. Now, a second generation of runners are making the trek through the course, which is now in Wheeling after starting in Benwood. “I get emails constantly from different runners with questions about the race and have people signing up online,” he noted. Unofficial events begin today with a pasta dinner at Undo’s in Benwood for registered participants and a guest (special fee). The Green Mile Run and Walk is dedicated this year in memory of Sgt. David Green. Also on Friday, there will be a pizza dinner, sponsored by Dominos.

The Bordas and Bordas Health and Fitness Expo will take place Friday and Saturday inside WesBanco Arena. Green said he’s made it a point to grow the expo, which features wares from a variety of vendors. The Undo’s Fitness 5K Team Challenge is also available to those who’d like to participate Wheeling Island Hotel, Casino and Racetrack, the Ohio County Commission, Kohl’s Miklas Meat Market, Troy Security Solutions and Local Union 83 are other sponsors. “We’ll have all of the awards ceremonies inside WesBanco Arena,” Green said. “And they’ll be door prizes for all three races.” For more information about everything involved with all race events, visit www.debbiegreen5k.com

Race Proceeds to Help Kidder, Blanchard By CODY TOMER Staff Writer WHEELING — Every year, Ron Green brings a little light to the lives of many young children battling pediatric cancer. Two of those kids will receive some assistance from this year’s Debbie Green 5K Run/Walk as proceeds go to the children and families in their fight against cancer. This year’s recipients are 4-year old Ava Blanchard of Wintersville and 3-year old Penelope Kidder of Salinesville. “Both are very young and it’s sad what they are going through,” Green said. “They’ve been going through chemo and radiation and I know they were away at Children’s Hospital for a period of time. We just want to help them out as much as we can. “We can’t take it all away but our goal is to not only help them financially some but to get their minds off of what they are going through and give them something they will always remember — this race.” Saturday, the day of the 5K Run/Walk, will be exactly one year since Penelope had her first chemoPhoto Provided therapy treatment. her family are nearing the finish line to beating this awful illness. “It’s been rough,” Kylie Kidder, Penelope’s mother, said. “She has done great and has been in the best spirits the whole time. She keeps us motivated daily. As well as she has handled this, it makes it easier. “We’re just taking it day-by-day but it’s been an emotional ride for sure. “We’ll finally finish in September and she should ring the bell in November.” Penelope, along with the entire Kidder family, has received plenty of support from so many people, including Green. “Everyone in the community, our closest friends and family have all been supporting her since Day 1,” Kylie said. “It’s a great community to raise a child in and that has helped mentally and physically. “We are very grateful for everything that Ron and his (volunteers) do for the kids who are so sick and fighting for their lives day-byday. We are just very grateful for everything they do.” Also in this battle with Penelope is her older sister, Ainsley, 10, and older brother Timothy, 8. “They are both very supportive of her,” Kylie said. “They are always playing with her and making her laugh.” Despite the obstacles Penelope has endured, nothing has stopped her from enjoying life. “She is a joy and very energetic,” Kylie said. “She is a little shy but once she warms up to you she is a little spitfire redhead and she’s starting to grow her hair back.” After every chemo treatment, there is always something to lift Penelope’s spirits waiting for her, as well. “She is obsessed with Elmo and she always gets a toy from the toy chest up there and we always make

sure to have something on hand for her, too,” Kylie said. “She loves the LOL dolls and Poopsies from Wal-Mart.” Penelope will turn 4 in September. Hopefully, she will be celebrating a clean bill of health, as well. ∫∫∫ Christmas was very different for the Blanchard family two-and-a-half years ago. Instead of opening presents under the tree, Virginia and David Blanchard’s daughter, Ava, was undergoing chemotherapy for the first time. “She was diagnosed on Dec. 23, 2016, and Christmas morning was her first chemo treatment,” Virginia said. “It hit us out of nowhere. You never expect that to happen but she was a trooper and pushed straight through it and drug me and my husband through it, too. “She is so resilient.” Ava’s resiliency paid off. After a long two-and-ahalf year battle, Ava finished her chemo treatments in March and is on the go 24/7. “Things are going well,” Virginia said. “She is recovering now and is doing amazing. She did amazing throughout it all. “She is so much fun. She doesn’t quit for a second and is excited about everything. She loves pink glitter and animals. She loves her dog.” Nobody fights alone and Ava and her family have received plenty of support over the years. “We’ve met so many people and made life-long friends,” Virginia said. “We’ve met Ron twice and his family is amazing. “This means a tremendous amount to our family — just that she will be taken care of while we try to build ourselves back, financially. “The fact that they do this every year is amazing.”

ABOUT DEBBIE GREEN Debbie Green was a 7 year old girl from Benwood, WV. She was like every other little girl... she loved going to school, cheerleading, and playing with her friends. Debbie was loved by all who knew her. She enjoyed life to the fullest. In 1970, Debbie was diagnosed with leukemia. For two long years, she battled the disease with courage and determination. On February 10, 1972, friends from all over the Ohio Valley put on a benefit show for her, calling it “Debbie Green Day”, helping her during her difficult time. That day meant so much to Debbie and her family, but in less than 2 months, on April 4, 1972, Debbie lost her courageous battle with leukemia. Now, from tragedy comes triumph, and from sadness comes hope. Debbie’s memory lives on with this wonderful event which benefits local children who also suffer from leukemia and need our love and support, just like Debbie did in 1972. We are a first-class running and walking event, with a fast course and a wonderful finish at Wheeling’s Heritage Port. The Debbie Green 5K, in it’s 21st year, is becoming one of the regions popular racing events. The 5K and the Green Mile has been a hot bed for the top racing talents in the region. The course is fast and has had some of the top 5K road race times in the world. The walking divisions are equally competitive with some of the best race walkers in the region competing and many novice runners and walkers also racing for a reason. Debbie’s Dash is a special event for the kids, and all the kids are guaranteed first place. Our goal is to provide you, the participant, with a weekend of events that are professionally organized and to provide the runners and walkers with great amenities, door prizes, pasta and entertainment. This is truly an event that will make you feel proud to be a part of.

Debbie’s Dash to Help Youngsters Get Fit By JOSH STROPE Sports Editor WHEELING — While the annual Debbie Green 5K Race/Walk for Leukemia gets the Saturday night headlines, one of the most anticipated events of the weekend is the Debbie’s Dash. Debbie’s Dash marks its 17th year. Since it was added in the weekend’s fifth year, it has become a staple of race weekend. “It is amazing that this has been here 17 years,” race director Ron Green said. “They have so much fun with it. This year we will be giving them a big spotlight. We are starting the race at 6:02 and it will be televised live on (WTOV9).” The 100-yard dash is for children ages 9 and under. Registration is from 3-6 p.m. and you can also register on Friday. There is a $3 entry fee. Shirts, cookies and pizza are guaranteed to the first 150 registered. For Green, the whole race weekend is a labor of love in honor of his late sister, Debbie. But as any race director around the country will tell you, one of the main reasons to put on an event like this is to promote heath and fitness. Green is no different.

“This race is about helping kids with cancer and has some of the most elite runners in the world,” Green said. “Health and fitness is so important and we need to keep kids active. There isn’t enough things in the country right now that keeps kids active. “So it is nice to have a small hand in helping our local kids in that respect.” It especially makes Green proud when he sees someone who started as a youngster in the Debbie Dash work his or her way up to the Green Mile or the Debbie Green 5K. “It is like they have grown up with the race,” he said. “I see so many doing the mile that were just youngsters running the Debbie Dash a few years ago.” As always, grand prizes will be awarded in the form of two boys and two girls bicycles. And like every year, those are dedicated by assistant race director Terry Whitecotton. “It is something he has done every year,” Green said about Whitecotton, nicknamed “The Legend.” “Terry goes to so many races a year and does that all the time. He is just a generous, giving person and it is so nice to have someone like that associated with our race.”

Kalkreuth Returns As Title Sponsor By KYLE LUTZ Staff Writer WHEELING — Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal has certainly done its part of giving back to the community. And it has no intention of slowing down. For the past five years, the company has teamed up with Ron Green and has been the title sponsor of the Debbie Green 5K Run/Walk for Leukemia. “It’s always great to be associated with a high-visibility and very well-run even such as the Debbie Green 5K,” Kalkreuth marketing director Paul Orbin said. “I’ve got to say Ron does a great job of putting it on and we get a lot of involvement by our employees as a result.” It’s true. Not only will Kalkreuth be the title sponsor, close to 80 employees and their family members will participate during the weekend. “We’ve had a team running in this all five years of our involvement,” Orbin said. “And we’ll do it this year as well.” Kalkreuth is one of over 80 sponsors for the annual event. Some other sponsors include WTOV 9, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Undo’s Italian, The Intelligencer/Wheeling News-Register, Wheeling Island Hotel, Casino and Racetrack, the city of Wheeling, Miklas Meat Market, Kohls, Ohio County Commission, Bordas and Bordas, Troy Security Solutions, Christian Fellowship Foundation and

Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union No. 83. With the race being in its 22nd year, Green, the race director, is ready for another successful weekend. “Kalkreuth ... They’re just amazing. Not only do they financially support the event with finances to put the event on, but they get their employees to do the race. Which is wonderful,” Green said. “They practice wellness in their company, they want healthy employees and they get them to do the race. They pay for their employees to do the race. It’s wonderful. They do so much. We worked together throughout the year and they’re just a great title sponsor.” It certainly has been a busy couple of weeks for Kalkreuth. This past weekend, the company held their amateur golf championship at the Palmer and Speidel Jones Courses at Oglebay. After a successful stint, the company will make its way to downtown Wheeling to help out another great cause. “We have to shift gears. We have to put our clubs away and put our running shoes on,” Orbin said. “The Kalkreuth Amateur Golf Championship was a big success. We were able to donate almost $32,000 to Easter Seals as a result. Now we turn to Debbie Green and another great cause and that’s of course the getting the word out and making people aware of childhood cancer.”

GOOD LUCK TO ALL PARTICIPANTS! Jerry Fiutem

List of Recipients From Debbie Green 5K

Green Mile To Honor Sgt. David Green By JOSH STROPE Sports Editor WHEELING — The annual Green Mile gets race weekend started in anticipation for the Debbie Green 5K Run/Walk for Leukemia. This year, though, the race takes on an extra special meaning. Friday, the race will be dedicated in memory of Sgt. David Green of the United States Marine Corp. Green is the nephew of race director Ron Green. David Green was someone who was always involved in race weekend. After all, this race has been part of his family for 22 years. Shortly after 9/11, David enlisted and served three years in Iraq as a medic and fireman. Despite being across the world, the Debbie Green was never far from his mind. “He put on a race over there where he was stationed,” Ron Green said. “He got a few fellow soldiers at their base camp where it was safe, they did a 3-mile loop. “I sent them shirts and medals. They were fighting for our country and still

finding time to raise money for the kids that year. “David was someone that was always there to help out. He was a loving son, brother, uncle and a great friend to all who knew him. He is dearly missed!” David Green came home and unfortunately suffered from post traumatic stress disorder, commonly known as PTSD. David Green passed away in October 2013. “This is something we have wanted to do as a way to honor him ever since,” Ron Green said. “We know this is not easy for the family, but we are doing the best we can and we hope he will be smiling down on us.” Ron Green first came up with the idea to honor David two years ago. Ron grew up across the street from David and spent nearly 25 years together. “He was more like a brother than a nephew,” Ron said. “We were a really tight family and know I think the family is ready to honor him. “David was one of those people that always stood up for the little guy. That is why he went to Iraq. He was a proud Marine.

He looked sharp in his uniform.” As for the race itself, in recent years, it hasn’t been much of a competition. Martins Ferry native Cedrick Robinson has dominated the race, winning six straight. Ron Green talked to Robinson recently and said his status is up in the air for Friday. “He is running with a knee injury, I believe a torn miniscus,” Ron Green said. “I am not sure what his status is for Friday.”

Robinson’s possible absence could open the door for a number of people to cross the finish line first. Green said with mile races, you never know who is going to show up until the day of the race. Green said he expects to have around 200 people take part in the Green Mile. Now if the weather could do him some favors. “The forecast looks good,” he said. “We have had some crappy weather for the Green Mile in recent years so we are overdue.”

Health Expo Continues To Grow By BUBBA KAPRAL Executive Sports Editor WHEELING — The Debbie Green Memorial 5K Run/ Walk has blossomed into a rite of summer. Now in its 22nd year, the Friendly City extravaganza is also known as “The Race for a Reason.” The reason holds a special place in the heart of race director Ron Green. Green established the race in memory of his sister, Debbie, who died after a courageous battle with leukemia in 1972 at age 7. The race has helped countless individuals staging a similar battle. This year’s race is set for this Saturday. What started out as a much smaller-scaled event on the streets of Benwood has morphed into an event in international scope. So much so, it is a two-day happening offering many other features other than the race itself. One of those is the Bordas and Bordas Health and Fitness Expo. The expo will be held both Friday and Saturday inside WesBanco Arena and will welcome a myriad of vendors. Green said he

has, “Made it a point to grow the expo.” And that he has. This marks the third year the expo will be part of the race and it continues to experience a spike in vendor participation. “The expo has been a big plus and the arena is the perfect location for it. Bordas & Bordas has been a race sponsor for 18 years and they are just great,” Green said. “Vendors-wise we have the national running center from Clark’s Summit, Pa. It carries all running and walking apparel, shoes etc. We also have Seven Springs as a sponsor as well as Anytime Fitness. “We also some other civic groups featured at the expo and some other vendors that are not fitness-oriented will be taking part. We will also have packet pickup at the expo site as well as our awards presentation. The Bordas and Bordas Health Photo Provided & Fitness Expo has been a big plus to the race weekend.
