Welcome to the 58th annual Barnesville Pumpkin Festival

The officers and committee members are excited to welcome you to the 2022 Barnesville Pumpkin Festival, Thursday, September 22 through Sunday, September 25. Contests, delicious foods, giant pumpkins, horticultural displays, arts, crafts, parade, car show and a super lineup of musical entertainment make this one of the best festivals in the state.

The Pumpkin Festival began in 1964 as a small street festival founded in the basement of the Catholic Church. Things have changed considerably since the earlier festivals. We have well over 100 vendors providing concessions, rides and harvest-inspired arts and crafts, antiques and more. Local organizations and churches offer a variety of home-style foods. Musical entertainment and contests take place on two stages, the Central Stage on East Main St. and the Pumpkin Stage on W. Main St. There is a variety of fun

contests for both adults and children, a weigh-off of champion pumpkins, a giant pumpkin parade on Saturday, and an antique, classic & custom car show on Sunday. There is plenty to see and do and, best of all, admission remains FREE. The Barnesville Pumpkin Festival has become a tradition for families and friends, many who travel long distances to come each year to enjoy one of Ohio’s most popular festivals. Our committee of volunteers works hard each year to make each festival better than the one before. We are very happy to have you visit and hope you have a most enjoyable and memorable time. Wednesday Night Weigh-Off Of Giant Pumpkins

• $2 per pound paid for the King Pumpkin!

Everyone gathers around downtown for the Wednesday night Giant Pumpkin Weighoff to see who will tip the scales the most. Wednesday night is considered the unofficial start of the Festival, prior to the arrival of many out-of-town visitors. From 6-9pm on September 21, a parade of trucks and trailers carrying huge pumpkins get in line to face the scales. This is surely one of the most popular events for the local townspeople as neighbors and friends visit and wait to see who will have this year’s King Pumpkin.

We would like to thank Ohio Valley Scale in Wheeling, WV, for donating the large scales to accommodate the ever-increasing size of gigantic pumpkins. Thank you also to Village Hardware & Rental and Braido Memorials for their time and equipment in assisting with the giant pumpkins. A special thanks to Louisiana Grill who is a major sponsor of the prize money for the King and other placing pumpkins and to Doan Ford who sponsors the trophies for the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place pumpkins.

King Pumpkin entries are the only ones accepted on Wednesday night. The line-up will change this year, with entries lining up on North Chestnut (800), headed south towards the intersection of Chestnut and Main Street. This will make it easy to pull up to the scales rather than backing in.

Exhibitor of the largest entry receives $2.00 per pound. Winner of the largest “locally-grown” pumpkin receives $100. “Locally-grown” is defined as any exhibit grown in Belmont, Guernsey, Harrison, Jefferson, Monroe and Noble counties. Second largest overall receives $1,000, third - $500, fourth - $300, fifth - $200, sixth -$150 and 7th through 10th place each receive $100.

Nationally Traveling EYES OF FREEDOM Coming Again!

This traveling memorial depicts the fallen Marines and Navy Corpsman of Columbus, OH based Lima Company 3/25, one of the most heavily engaged units of Operation Iraqi Freedom. These 23 life-sized portraits have become a powerful traveling military tribute. Although the paintings in this Memorial specifically depict 23 fallen Marines, it has become much more. The mission of the nonprofit, Eyes of Freedom is to honor the service and sacrifice of all who answer our nation’s call. Behind each portrait one feels the spirit of the thousands of men and women who have served our country, in every branch of the armed forces, not forgetting the returning veterans coming home to us.

The memorial includes a life-sized bronzed sculpture of a serviceman seated with head down, his face depicting emotions of the internal Silent Battle, as the touchable work is aptly named. He represents our nation’s veterans who struggle with post-traumatic stress and thoughts of suicide, as they navigate life after combat.

This traveling tribute is supported by a board of directors and a two-man touring team, each with a personal connection to the men in the paintings; one is a purple heart combat vet who fought alongside these men and was badly injured and the other was personal friends of fallen Marine Justin Hoffman. Both men offer personal insight into the history and experience of this powerful memorial.

Agriculture & Horticulture Entries Provide A Visual Display Of Nature’s Bounty

Agriculture and Horticulture Displays are a feast for the eyes while providing a colorful backdrop for the giant pumpkins. Many hours of labor by both the growers and the festival volunteers go into these displays and we encourage anyone to participate. Entries are accepted from 9:00am to 7:00pm on Thursday, September 22. It is a long day for the many dedicated volunteers as they work to accept entries. Gather those pumpkins, gourds, fruits or vegetables or make a scarecrow and bring to the festival to make this 58th year a splendid agricultural display. Size limitations do apply so if you have any questions concerning restrictions or would like to volunteer to accept entries, please call the chairman, Jeff Carpenter at 740-310-1497.

The FFA judges will award the winning ribbons on Friday morning.

The Pumpkin Seed Harvest On Sunday

If you’ve been contemplating trying to grow a giant pumpkin, then you might want to attend the Pumpkin Seed Harvest on Sunday. One of the giant pumpkins, other than the first, second or third-place winners — and only if one is available — will be cut open and the seeds distributed, two each to anyone wanting the seeds. This takes place in the King Pumpkin area, the main attraction, where everyone gathers to admire these gentle giants, get their pictures taken and trade stories.

The Daniel Stephens Family provides an interesting and educational presentation that gives everyone an inside look at a big pumpkin and how to grow one. The demonstration takes place at 2:00pm Sunday, September 25, near the Information Booth.

Don’t miss this informative exhibition and get your seeds too. We’d love to see you bring in your own giant pumpkins next year!

This will only happen if there is a pumpkin available!

Quilt Display Being Featured At The Museum

A Quilt Display will be held at the beautiful Belmont County Victorian Mansion Museum from Friday through Sunday, by admission, featuring vintage quilts from the museum’s collection. The museum will be open on Friday and Sunday from 12:00 to 4:00pm and Saturday from 10:00am to 6:00pm. Admission is $8.00 for adults and $2.00 for youth 6-18 years old. King Pumpkin On Auction Block Saturday

One of the most exciting events of the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival is the auctioning off of the King Pumpkin. The excitement of auction time always builds Saturday afternoon after the completion of the Giant Pumpkin Parade when local auctioneer, Richard Pryor, cranks it up with his sales call from the King Pumpkin Area.

Pryor donates his time each year to sell the King Pumpkin as thousands of festival-goers look on.

And the excitement does not stop until “SOLD” is called out.

The auction is a major fund raising effort for the Festival Committee. Last year’s King Pumpkin set a new state record weighing 2,195 pounds and grown by Jeff Theil of Dillonvale, Ohio. This was the second time that the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival has produced the state record. The new state record King Pumpkin was purchased by Belmont Classic Car owners, Andy and Dana Mistak, for $8,500.

The winning bidder not only supports

the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival, but also gets front-page billing on the following year’s official Pumpkin Festival Tabloid. They also get to show off the huge vegetable at their business for a week.

Immediately following the sale of the King Pumpkin, an auction of the limited edition glass pumpkins will be held.

The King Pumpkin Auction begins at 5:00pm on Saturday, September 24, in the area near the Giant Pumpkin display. For more information about the auction, stop at the Information Booth located in the vicinity.

Just before the auction, the 2022 Royalty and Mascot will be introduced.

A second auction will be held on the Festival’s closing day Sunday, September 25, at 5:00pm for all unclaimed produce entries as well as the raffle drawing for the twelfth annual, custom-made Barnesville Pumpkin Festival Crock, crafted and donated by local artist Luke Johnson of Johnson Pottery.

Opening Ceremony

The 2022 Barnesville Pumpkin Festival officially kicks off at the Ribbon Cutting and Opening Ceremony on Thursday, September 22, at 5:00 p.m. The Festival Committee will be on hand as the Jennifer Compston-Strough cuts the ribbon signaling the opening of this 58th annual event. The new Pumpkin Queen, Princess and Mini Miss will be introduced and the King Pumpkin Trophy, sponsored by Doan Ford, will be presented to the grower of the largest pumpkin. The Founder’s Cup, sponsored by the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival in honor of the Martin Schumacher Family, will be awarded to the largest locally grown pumpkin. Second-place and Third-place trophies will also be presented and are sponsored by Doan Ford.

Agriculture & Horticulture Exposition

Entering of agriculture products including King Pumpkin is open to anyone from anywhere. If you grew it, you can enter it. The winner of the King Pumpkin will receive $2.00 per lb. and a $100 cash prize will be awarded to the largest pumpkin grown in the local six county area. King Pumpkin entries will be accepted Wednesday, September 21, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Vegetable displays, etc. will be accepted from 9:00am to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 22. Come one, come all!

Queens Spotted At Blame My Roots Festival

You never know who you will run into at the ever popular and fantastic Blame My Roots country music festival held nearby in Morristown. Spotted this summer were Michelle Slavik Gabram, left, the 1982 Pumpkin Queen, along with Olivia LeeWood Jefferis, the 2004 Pumpkin Queen. However, I bet there were more Pumpkin Queens on hand at BMR.

Pumpkin, Vegetable-Decorating

Entries Accepted On Thursday

From 12 Noon To 7 P.m.

Get creative and turn those pumpkins, squash and vegetables into flora, fauna, your favorite celebrity, creepy character, church, building, or anything you can possibly imagine. Create a work of art for all to enjoy.

Entries must be within 36” x 36”. Entries larger than that will not be accepted due to space limitation.

Your masterpieces will be accepted at the Registration Table from 12:00 noon to 7:00pm, Thursday, September 22, on the north side of West Main Street

A trophy will be awarded to the masterpiece judged best of show. Ribbons will be awarded in the following areas: best decorated pumpkin/squash using paint and artificial decorations; and best decorated pumpkin/squash by a group or organization. All first place winners receive a trophy and a ribbon.

Winners will be announced Friday morning and several will be displayed on the tables in the King Pumpkin area throughout the weekend.

Mother’s Club Crowns Little Pumpkin Royals

The Barnesville Mother’s Club sponsors the Little Mr. and Miss Pumpkin contest each year. Youngsters between the ages of three and five will compete for the titles. Winners along with first and second runners-up are named in both categories. The contest will be held at 7:00pm on Thursday, September 22, at the First Christian Church New Life Center, 219 West Church Street. All determinations are made by the luck of the draw and contestants must be present to win. Winners are introduced at the King Pumpkin area following the contest.

The 2021 Little Miss Pumpkin winner was Makayla Bussa; 1st runner-up –Ellie Stephen; 2nd runner-up – Alex Ritchie.

The 2021 Little Mr. Pumpkin winner was Kainen Betts; 1st runner-up — Silas Wells; 2nd runner-up — Degrin Borsos.

Mother’s Club To Hold Pumpkin Baby Contest

The Barnesville Mother’s Club will be sponsoring the 2022 Barnesville Mother’s Club Pumpkin Baby Contest. Babies from birth to age two are eligible. Contestant’s parents will be given raffle tickets to sell in their quest to have their baby named the 2022 Pumpkin Baby. Contestants who bring in the most money will be named the winner.

Individuals can purchase tickets from contestants for a $1 donation. Raffle prizes will be $100, $50 and $25 in Barnesville Gold Certificates. Winners will be announced at the First Christian Church New Life Center, 219 West Church Street on Thursday, September 22, at 6:30pm. A first, second and third-place winner will be crowned. Winners will receive a trophy, T-shirt, sash and cash prize. Cash prizes are: 1st Place - $100; 2nd Place - $75; and 3rd Place - $50;.

The Pumpkin Baby winner will be introduced at the King Pumpkin Area following the contest. Pictures will be taken at that time. Winners will need to provide their own transportation for the parade.

The Pumpkin Baby winners for 2021 were: Winner – Tucker Singleton; 1st Runner up –Cooper Ray Hupp; and 2nd Runner up – Colt Brown.

Parking, Parking Lots And Shuttles

For safely reasons, PLEASE do not park in the alleyways. These areas need to be kept clear for emergency vehicles.

Parking for the Pumpkin Festival will be available at various locations throughout the village including:

∫ Barnesville Memorial Park, 130 Fair St.;

∫ Barnesville High School, 910 Shamrock Drive; The Depot, 300 Mulberry St.;

∫ Assumption Catholic Church ($5), 306 W. Main St.; and

∫ First Christian Church, 219 W. Church St. (Donation accepted). Drop Off & Pickup — A shuttle bus will run continuously (except during the parade) from 9:30am to 6:00pm on Saturday between the High School, where parking and the Eyes of Freedom Memorial is located and the downtown Festival area (stops in front of Ohio Hills Health Center).

The shuttle will also run again during the same times on Sunday between downtown and to the High School where the Classic, Antique & Custom Car Show will be held in addition to the Eyes of Freedom.

We encourage all Festival visitors to use the shuttle as parking spots are difficult to find.

2021 King Pumpkin Winners

The title of King Pumpkin for 2021 was awarded to Jeff Theil, Dillonvale, OH for his 2,195 pound giant pumpkin, setting a new Ohio state record! Jeff also received the Founder’s Cup Trophy which is given to the largest locally grown pumpkin. Locally grown is defined by being grown in Belmont, Guernsey, Harrison, Noble, Jefferson or Monroe Counties. The second largest pumpkin weighing 2,078 pounds was grown by local Barnesville natives, Todd & Donna Skinner. The Skinner’s have placed numerous times and have grown the King Pumpkin a whopping eight times, including the previous state record held since 2017. Third place went to Doug Kisamore of Diamond, OH with his 2,003 pounder.

Other pumpkin winners were as follows:

4th Place – 1,771 lbs. - Daniel Stephens, Barnesville, OH

5h Place – 1,257 lbs. - Chuck Greathouse, Hartville, OH

6th Place – 1,245 lbs. - Bexlee & Gatlin Powell, Barnesville, OH

Andy And Dana Mistak Purchased New State Record

2021 King Pumpkin For A Whopping $8,500!!

The owners of Belmont Classic Cars, Andy and Dana Mistak, stepped up to purchase the largest pumpkin ever grown in the State of Ohio. Belmont Classic Cars, which opened in 2017, is a classic and collector car dealership located on SR149 at the intersection of Stenger Road between Belmont and Morristown. The Mistaks are passionate about their cars and have a varied inventory of different makes, models and years of muscle cars, antique cars, exotics and classics. The audience was excited to see the Mistaks outbid a group of over 20 local businesses and individuals who had gone together to purchase the King Pumpkin. The grower of the King Pumpkin gets paid $2/pound with the remaining proceeds going to the Festival.

The Giant Pumpkin Parade Marches Through Town On Saturday

The 58th annual Barnesville Pumpkin Festival Giant Pumpkin Parade will be held on Saturday, September 24th at 1:00pm, rain or shine. The parade will commence from the High School on Shamrock Drive beginning at 12:45pm, continue west on Main Street, north on Chestnut Street and continuing towards the Park, ending at Euclid Drive. We invite any bands, businesses, horses, church groups, clubs or other organizations to participate in this popular annual event. No entry fee is required.

All entries must be pre-registered by September 15, 2022 in order to be announced. No exceptions. Space will be pre-assigned this year. Forms can be downloaded from our website at www.barnesvillepumpkinfestival.com or they may be picked up at Woodsfield Savings Bank or Barnesville Chamber of Commerce office. All non-registered entries (or entries received after September 14, 2022) will not be announced and will fall in at the end of the parade.

Check-in will begin at 10:00am Saturday on Roosevelt Road off of East Main Street / State Route 147. Signs will be posted. Check-in will be open until 11:45am and all entries must be in place by 12:00pm. For everyone's safety, traffic will be limited and one-way from 10:00am until parade time. No traffic will be allowed into Barnesville

High School after 12:00pm.

First, second and third places will receive trophies in one of these categories: Float, Best Pumpkin Theme, Group, Horse, Hitch Horse, Royalty, Best Tractor and Best Automobile. The decisions of the judges are final. Winners will be announced after the parade and trophies may be picked up at the Information Booth.

Due to liability issues and threat of injury; no material is to be thrown from your vehicle or float. You must provide walkers with your entry to distribute any and all candy, t-shirts, pamphlets, etc. to the crowd. This policy is for the safety of all, as it will greatly reduce the need for both children and adults to run into the line of parade traffic. Please help us make our parade a safe and happy event by following this important safety policy.

PARADE LINE-UP

Check-in will begin at 10:00am on Sat., Sept. 24 on Roosevelt Road, off of East Main Street / State Route 147 and continue until 11:45pm. After that time, all late entries will fall in line after the last registered entry and will not be announced or judged.

All units must be in line by 12:00pm. The formation area will be Shamrock Drive, Barnesville Middle School and Barnesville High School.

All entries must enter Roosevelt Road off State Route 147 due to one-way traffic in that area from 10:00am until the parade moves at approximately 12:45pm.

Euclid Avenue / Railroad Street will be the return route to the origin of the parade. Maps will be provided to participants and signs will be posted.

McKelvey Named Parade Grand Marshal

Barnesville life long citizen, Councilman Tim McKelvey will be honored as the Grand Marshal of the 2022 Giant Pumpkin Parade. Tim graciously agreed to be the Grand Marshal and will enjoy a place of honor at the head of the parade along with his wife, Liz, and a few of his five grandchildren.

A native, a veteran, a councilman, a family man, and a contributor on all fronts, McKelvey, born and raised here in Barnesville, said “I am so lucky to be born in this town, to be raised in this town and to raise our kids in this town, and I’m really glad to live here now.” A citizen of whom Barnesville is immensely proud to call their own, Tim has given much of his time and money and is always willing to support a multitude of local efforts.

After graduating from Barnesville and Belmont Tech, Tim was employed by UPS in Columbus for a brief stint before being drafted into the Service. After serving in the Army he returned back to UPS for a short while before permanently returning to his roots where he worked in the mining industry for 16 years followed by employment at Barnesville schools for over a decade. Not one to spend his time idly, Councilman McKelvey spends his retirement days as a professional painter and paper hanger.

McKelvey has been involved in many organizations in Barnesville starting with being a charter member of the Barnesville E-Squad, 40+ years of being a member of the Barnesville Boosters, the 200 Club, and the Chain Crew of the Shamrock Football team. Additionally, he has served on the Community Foundation, Barnesville Area Education Foundation, the Rotary, and has served three terms plus three years as a Councilman of which he is a past president. Tim is a devout Catholic and member of the Assumption Church in Barnesville.

Tim resides here in Barnesville with his wife, Elizabeth. They have two daughters, Sara McKelvey Artrip (Chad) of Fredonia, NY and Lindsey McKelvey McGlumphy (Kyle) of Columbus, OH; and five grandchildren, Delaney and Jack Artrip and Libby, Mara & Avery McGlumphy.

When asked his thoughts on the Pumpkin Festival, Tim said “the best thing is running into people you haven’t seen in years.” His highlight is having dinner with his family on Sunday, the last day of the festival, in the basement of the Catholic Church. You will always find Councilman McKelvey on Wednesday evening of the Weigh-off happily serving customers at the Rotary’s Fish Wagon.

Ribbon To Open The 2022 Barnesville Pumpkin Festival

The Barnesville Pumpkin Festival is proud to have local newspaper editor Jennifer Compston-Strough to cut the ribbon, signaling the official opening of this year’s festival at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, September 22, 2022.

The Belmont resident is the managing editor of The Times Leader and, as such, has covered the weigh-off and scores of other Pumpkin Festival events during the course of her career. She said she is excited to participate in the opening ceremony.

“I was born in Barnesville and raised just a few miles away in Belmont, so the Pumpkin Festival has always been a special autumn event for myself, my friends and my family,”

she said. “I am honored to have the opportunity to cut the ribbon to open the festivities.”

Compston-Strough is a Barnesville native and visited the village often as a child, taking swimming lessons at the pool, learning to play piano at Neal Studio of Music and participating in dance, tumbling and baton classes in the community. One of her earliest Pumpkin Festival memories is marching in the Giant Pumpkin Parade while twirling her baton. She followed that same route several more times as a member of the Union Local High School Marching Band, and again later while working as director of advancement for Olney Friends School. Inciden-

tally, her husband, Michael Strough, is a magician who has performed at the festival as well.

A UL graduate, Compston-Strough obtained a bachelor’s degree from Wright State University before teaching in area schools for a few years and then landing a job as a newspaper reporter, launching her journalism career. In addition to her work at The Times Leader, she enjoys gardening, home improvement projects, board games and spending time with family and friends.

She said on of her favorite annual activities is viewing the village homes and businesses that have been decorated in preparation for the festival.

Rules and Regulations:

1. Pedal tractors will be furnished for all contestants;

2. The contestant must be able to pedal the tractor without assistance;

3. All contestants will be give three (3) chances to get their sled moving from the starting line. All pullers will be stopped when the forward motion of the sled stops. No restarts unless called by an official.

4. The pulling tractor must stay between the lines on the pulling lane at all times.

5. If the tractor leaves the pulling lane, the official distance will be from the sled to the starting line.

6. In case of tie, a pull-off will determine the winner.

7. The three classes of contestants will be as follows:

A. Class 1: 30-45 pounds

B. Class 2: 46-60 pounds

C. Class 3: 61-75 pounds

8. Both girls and boys up to age twelve (12) are eligible to enter.

9. The judge’s decision will be final for all pulls and contestant weigh-ins.

10. All contestants must be present at the time of his or her pedal pull.

11. A permission slip signed by the contestants parent or guardian is required. The required signature releases the Union Local FFA Alumni from any financial liability due to an accident.

12. Registration for the pedal pull will be approximately one (1) hour prior to the start of the pedal pull.

13. Only registered contestants are eligible to participate in the pedal pull. A parent or guardian must accompany the child.

14. Spectators must remain in seats away from the pulling lane.

15. The individual contestant may accept his or her first pull or may choose to re-pull. All re-pull distances will be recorded as the official distance.

Festival Searching For Best Pumpkin Mascot

The Mascot Competition will be held at the King Pumpkin area at 7:00pm on Friday, September 23. Sign up begins at 6:00pm and must be completed by 6:30pm at the Information Booth on the northwest corner of Main & Chestnut. We invite all ages to compete for the pumpkin-themed mascot. Used Book Sale At Watt Center

The annual used book sale at the Watt Center will return during the Festival with even more books to choose from! Stop by for a chance to browse through the shelves and to take a break from the big crowds along Main Street. There are thousands of books available with authors and titles to interest all ages. Fiction and non-fiction selections are located throughout the historic Watt Car and Wheel Company office building at 515 Watt Avenue, just east of the Barnesville B & O Railroad Station. Ample parking is available at The Watt Center, at no charge.

Wheeler’s Pumpkin Patch On The Corner

The Wheeler’s, a long-standing tradition at the Pumpkin Festival, have sold pumpkins, Indian corn, decorated pumpkins and gourds on the northwest corner of Main and Chestnut near the Information Booth for over 40 years. All of their produce is grown on their farm, Pumpkin Valley Jersey Farm, located south of Barnesville in Jerusalem.

Twelth Annual Pumpkin Festival Crock For Raffle

The Barnesville Pumpkin Festival commemorative crock will be raffled off during the 2022 Festival. This unique, one-of-a-kind, crock is the twelfth of an annual series. Only one of these is produced each year. The crock was designed, created and graciously donated by local artist, Luke Johnson. Mr. Johnson also donates the pie plates for the winners of the pie baking contest. Prior to and during the festival, the crock will be displayed at Avenues of Barnesville, 132 E. Main Street. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $1.00 for one or $5.00 for six from any Pumpkin Festival committee member, at Avenues of Barnesville or at the Information Booth during the Festival. Victorian Mansion Museum Open

The Belmont County Historical Society invites you to open the door to a bygone era. Visitors of all ages thrill to the splendor and elegance of this award-winning Victorian Mansion Museum of the Romanesque style. Located at 532 N. Chestnut St. in Barnesville, the museum creates an atmosphere where visitors can experience daily life in the Victorian era. Twenty-six rooms are skillfully restored and furnished with the elements of the day. Visitors are treated to the grandeur of fine carved woodwork, moldings, mantels, and doors.

Glass Pumpkins For 2022

The original small glass pumpkins customized for the 2022 Barnesville Pumpkin Festival will be for sale at the Information Booth.

There will be six larger ones auctioned off after the King Pumpkin Auction on Saturday at 5pm.

These pumpkins are hand blown by Bob Allen near Moundsville, West Virginia. Bob is the resident artist at Oglebay Institute at Oglebay Park in Wheeling, West Virginia.

The Pumpkin Patch offers quality crafts for sale in the Elementary School gym during the festival.

With more than 40 different crafters and a wide variety of merchandise, the Pumpkin Patch is always the place to visit for unique

home decorations.

Fiddle, Banjo And Mandolin Musical Talent Contest Set

For Sunday At 2:00 p.m.

Everyone loves to listen to the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival’s ever-popular Fiddle, Banjo and Mandolin showdown. Prizes will be awarded to Youth, Teen and Adult in each of the following four categories: Banjo, Fiddle, Mandolin and Open Class. Youth division includes ages up to 13 years old; Teen division is 13 up to 21 years old; and Adult division is 21 years and older.

Registration will be from 1:00pm until 2:00pm and the competition will begin at 2:00pm on Sunday, September 25, on the Central Stage.

Popular Hog Calling Contest On Saturday

The Barnesville Pumpkin Festival Hog Calling contest will be held Saturday, September 24 at 6:00pm on the Pumpkin Stage. Women and men vie in separate divisions with the holler-off determining the Grand Champion.

A child’s division for children, age 5-8 and age 9-15 with prizes of a small trophy for First; and ribbons for Second and Third Place. The Adults 16 and over: Men’s Division — First, Second & Third Places receive a Pumpkin Festival Hat.

Women’s Division — First, Second & Third Places receive a Pumpkin Festival Mug.

Scoring is based on 50% loudness, 25% crowd reaction and 25% originality.

Bake Your Best Pumpkin Pie And Enter The Contest Thursday At 4pm On The Pumpkin Stage

The best pumpkin pie baker will be awarded at the Pumpkin Pie Baking Contest to be held on the Pumpkin Stage on Thursday, September 22, at 4:00pm. Pies must be entered at the Pumpkin Stage between 3:00pm and 4:00pm. Judging will be from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. In case of rain, please check with the Information Booth for further instructions.

First Place, Second and Third Places will receive a custom pottery pie plate donated by Luke Johnson, owner of Johnson Family Pottery.

Pumpkin Stage Hosts Beard, Mustache Contest Saturday

The Beard and Mustache Contest at the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival provides a lot of old-fashioned, visual fun. The contest begins at 5:30pm on Saturday, September 24, on the Pumpkin Stage and contestants may pre-register at the Information Booth or at the Pumpkin Stage at 5:15. Our expert judges will determine who has the winning style in the following categories:

Mustache — Longest; Best Kept; Most Unusual; Fullest; and Fanciest.

Beard — Longest; Best Kept; Most Unusual; Fullest; and Fanciest.

Winners receive a collector’s cup. Larry Baker chairs this event.

Join The Pumpkin Pie Eating Contest

Try eating pumpkin pie - fast - with your hands tied behind your back! That is what you will be doing if you enter the Pumpkin Pie Eating contest. It is judged on how fast you can eat, not how much.

Competition in three age groups will be held in the Pumpkin Festival Pie Eating contest on Thursday, September 22, at 5:00pm on the Pumpkin Stage.

Entries are taken from 4:00pm to 5:00pm in three age divisions: 5-8 years; 9-15 years; and 16 to adult. Cash prizes of $10 for 1st Place, $5 for 2nd Place and $3 for 3rd Place will be awarded. The champion pie eater also receives a trophy.

Contestants from age all ages are invited to compete in the Pumpkin Roll Contest on Sunday, September 25, at 1:00pm in the WesBanco parking lot at 230 East Main Street. Bring your own pumpkin or use one provided.

First and second-place prizes of $10 and $5 will be given in six age categories this year as follows: 5 years and under; 6-8 years; 9-11 years; 12-14 years; 15-17 years; and 18-adult.

Gather Your Pets For The Pet Show Saturday Tall Tales Contest On

Christy Stephen chairs the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival Pet Show, Saturday, September 24, on the Central Stage.

Registration begins at 10:00am and the contest begins at 10:30am. Categories include: smallest; best hometown pride (Pumpkin or Shamrocks); largest; most unusual; owner/pet dress-alike; and best tricks.

A first place champion will be chosen from each category, and they will receive a trophy. Second and third-place winners earn a ribbon, and participation ribbons are given to all contestants. Best of show will also be selected at the end of the contest.

New Talent At The Talent Show

Showcase your talent and join in on the fun at the Amateur Talent Show. If you like to sing, play an instrument, tell jokes, dance, perform magic tricks, or if you’re just plain talented, we welcome you to participate. The Amateur Talent Show will be held Thursday, September 22, at 5:30pm on the Central Stage located in the parking lot on Main Street between Cheffy Drugs and Avenues of Barnesville, with registration beginning at 5:00pm. Pre-registration is not necessary.

Lip-sync is not allowed and music must be on CD’s - iPods will not be accepted. Judging will be based on stage presence, ability, entertainment value, costume/attire and crowd response. Presentations are to be no longer than three (3) minutes. Points will be deducted for any performance over three minutes. We reserve the right to refuse any act based on age and/or family appropriateness. Decision of the judges is final.

Categories this year will be: Tiny Tots (ages 5-9); Itty Bitty’s (ages 1013); Teeny Boppers (ages 14-18); Big Boppers (ages 19 and up); and Groupies (any act consisting of more than one person).

First place trophies and second place medals will be awarded in all divisions. In addition, cash prizes will be awarded for first and second.

Pumpkin Festival Home Decorating Contest

Attention all homeowners! Please consider decorating your homes and yards for the 58th Annual Pumpkin Festival. It’s a great way to get the community and our visitors in the spirit and you can enter to be judged.

Barnesville residents and those residing within one mile of the village limits are eligible for judging. Decorations may be in any location on the exterior of the home and or lawn and must be in place by 9:00 am on Thursday, September 22. To ensure your home gets judged, please pre-register by calling Chairperson Carolyn Stephen at 614-580-9420.

Halloween characters and pumpkins with faces included as part of the display will not be considered for judging. Judging will be performed by the Barnesville High School Art Club.

Barnesville Business Inside Window Display Contest

Here we are once again!

Fall is coming and so is the Pumpkin Festival. Time to start thinking about getting the inside business windows decorated with colorful and festive displays.

We are looking for people who are interested in decorating the inside window of the downtown businesses for the festival this year. The categories are: Antiques/Collectibles; Fall Display; Retail Merchant; and Royalty. A Best of Show trophy will be awarded as well as the top winner in each category.

Queen’s Pageant To Be Held Sunday September 18, 2022

The annual Barnesville Pumpkin Festival Queen’s Pageant will be held Sunday, September 18, 2022, at 4:00pm at the Barnesville High School Auditorium. Girls from all over the Ohio Valley will compete for the title of Queen (age 14-19); Princess (age 10-13) and Mini Miss (age 6-9).

The Kiwanis Club of Barnesville

Judging is based on a private interview. A choice of talent and evening gown/party dress model-

ing and evening gown/party dress modeling will begin at 4:00pm and will be open to the public.

The three winners will receive a crown, sash, trophy, cash and other various prizes.

The top three in each category will receive prizes and ride on a float in the Giant Pumpkin Parade.

All contestants will receive a T-shirt, participation ribbon and a small gift.

Relinquishing their crowns this fall will be 2021 Queen Lindsay Drumm of Heath, Ohio; Princess Alexa Plumby of St. Clairsville, Ohio; and Mini Miss Sophia Jones of Barnesville, Ohio.

Old-Fashioned Fudge Contest On September 23

The Barnesville Pumpkin Festival will host the Old-Fashioned Fudge Contest at 6:00pm, Friday, September 23 at the Information Booth in the King Pumpkin Area near the intersection of Main and Chestnut Streets. Entries (six to eight pieces per plate) will be accepted at the judging area between 5:30pm and 6:00pm. Fudge will be judged on appearance, texture and flavor.

For the 21st year, South Central Power Company is sponsoring a trophy for the winning entry and providing each entrant with a token gift of appreciation.

Barnesville Senior Center Ready To Serve Lunch

The cooking crew of the Barnesville Senior Citizens Center wants to invite everyone to stop in on Thursday and Friday, September 22-23, as they will be serving lunch both days. Lunch will be served from 11:00am to 3:00pm.

Emerald Pointe Providing Free Ice Cream For Seniors

The menu includes vegetable soup, sloppy joe’s, hot dogs, chili dogs, hot chicken sandwiches, homemade noodles, coleslaw and pumpkin pie.

The senior –center also will be taking orders for whole pumpkin pies for $8.00.

Seniors will get a special treat again this year at the Pumpkin Festival. Emerald Pointe will be serving free ice cream from the Pumpkin Wagon to senior citizens on Sunday, September 25, from 2:005:00pm. Come see us then and get a free scoop on us. Yummy!

The Pumpkin Wagon Ready To Serves Pumpkin-Based Goodies

The Pumpkin Wagon, operated by the Barnesville Area Chamber of Commerce will be ready to serve you the delicious pumpkin-based foods such as pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin donuts and pumpkin pies during the festival. The Pumpkin Wagon has become one of the most popular booths of the festival with many people coming back year-toyear to get their favorite items.

Another reason the Pumpkin Wagon has become such a favorite spot is that it is staffed by many community volunteers. Many of the volunteers have served for a number of years while new ones join in to assist each year. In addition, “celebrity servers” will be manning the booth representing the local businesses many of which are dedicated members of the Barnesville Chamber of Commerce.

Festival-goers really enjoy patronizing the

Pumpkin Wagon as they realize that all the profits go right back into the community to help the local area. With the Chamber of Commerce heading up the force, the profits are thereby put to use to further the interest of the businesses of Barnesville. It’s a great example of the “community supporting the community,” said John Rataiczak, Chamber Board member.

On Sunday, September 25, Emerald Pointe will sponsor FREE ICE CREAM from 2:00-5:00pm for Senior Citizens!

The Pumpkin Wagon’s hours of operations will be Wednesday, September 21 from 5:009:00pm; Thursday and Friday, September 22-23 from 11:00am-10:00pm; Saturday from 9:00am10:00pm; and on Sunday from 12:00 noon5:00pm.

Noodles And Homemade Food At Shekinah Church

Homemade noodles, mashed potatoes and gravy, chicken or beef, salad, meatballs, homemade dinner rolls, cider, soda and fry pies will be offered for sale at the Shekinah Church across from Domino’s. Tractor Cruise Saturday Morning

The Tractor Cruise, held in conjunction with the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival, will start Saturday, September 24, 2022, at 9:00am. Registration and line up begins at 8:00am in Tacoma, on the east side of Barnesville, at the TJ Jefferis’ field on Rt. 147 just east of Mi -

chelli Drive.

The cruise will be 25+ miles long, so have a full tank of fuel. There will be a $5.00 entry fee and lunch will be available afterwards for a fee. Those wishing to join the Pumpkin Parade may do so at the end of the ride. You must have a valid driv -

Gus Smithhisler, the “Squashcarver” will return this year to transform a giant pumpkin into a piece of art. Based in Central Ohio, Gus has carved giant pumpkins for 20+ years and most of his work can be found at the renowned Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, Franklin Park Conservatory, the Ohio State Fair and that “other pumpkin festival up the road”. He also appeared on Halloween Wars Season 6 on the Food Network. The Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Longwood Gardens, Garfield Park Conservatory Chicago, the Cincinnati and Indianapolis Zoos have featured his work as well as the Country Living Fair. His live demonstration will start at 1pm Thursday near the King Pumpkin stand.

Antique, Classic & Custom Car Show Is Sunday Highlight

Once again, the big highlight for Sunday, September 25, 2022, is the Antique, Classic & Custom Car Show held at the Barnesville High School campus. This is one of the largest Car Shows in the Tri-State area.

Registration is from 9:00am until 1:00pm on Sunday, with the show running until approximately 3:00pm. Registration fee is $15.00 on the day of the show. Dash plaques and small pumpkin trophies will be given to the first 300 cars registered. The awards will be to the top 50 overall entries plus 35 Specialty Awards as well as Best of Show Trophy.

Cabin Boys+ Perform Prior To Talent Show

The Cabin Boys+ are a local band who present a slate of traditional bluegrass and old-time country music, gospel and songs from way back. Members include Wes Huntsman from Bethesda – banjo, harmonicas and vocals; Roger Shepherd from Flushing – guitar and vocals;

and Vicki Huntsman, Bethesda – bass guitar.

The Cabin Boys + will perform on the Central Stage prior to the Talent Show on Thursday, September 22, from 4:00pm to 5:30pm and also prior to the Fiddle, Banjo Contest on Sunday.

This trio has been nicknamed the “Pickin Preachers”! Playing your Positive/ Christian Country favorites, “Baranich, Gable & Lee” are all pastors at various churches. They will be playing on the Central Stage, Thursday at 8:30 following the Talent Show.

Gypsy Cowboys Perform Americana Music Saturday

The Gypsy Cowboys play original Americana Roots music. From the heart of Appalachia, these fellas bring you their brand of country rock.

“Flushed” Performing Friday On Central Stage

A duo of young talents, this group which is passionate about their music, plays rock, classic rock and country and covers Cash, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, AIC, Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris and many others. They will be on the Central Stage Saturday night beginning at 6:30pm.

The Incredible Duo Of Hoard & Jones Playing Friday At 6PM

Two of the Ohio Valleys best known musicians, Roger Hoard and Dan Jones, collaborated in 2013 to form the band Hoard and Jones. This premier band is know for its multi-genre, complex renditions of music from Classic Rock and Country, to Blues and Southern Rock in a style that is truly Hoard and Jones. Their performances showcase their talents on electric guitar, acoustic guitar, fiddle and harmonica. Backed by some of the most talented musicians in the area, this band is sure to play something for everyone that will have you on your feet with applause!

Mars Alley Brings Classic Rock On Saturday

MARS ALLEY is an Ohio Valley band playing classic rock covers from such bands as Foreigner, Triumph, Night Ranger, Rainbow and many other. They will be rockin' the Pumpkin Stage, next to the Biergarten, Saturday night, Sept. 24th, at 8pm.

Taylor Jo & The Copper Creek Band is a high energy fusion of seasoned musicians from the Ohio Valley area performing pop, country, rock, pop, blues and original songs. Taylor Jo’s amazing vocals and acoustic guitar, Gary Thompson’s impeccable electric guitar styles, Jeff Higgins’ rich driving bass and Bruce Cooey’s solid flamboyant drums combine with the band’s vocal harmonies to create an exceptional captivating music experience that transcends generational boundaries.

Copper Creek performs from 8:30–11pm on the Pumpkin Stage Thursday night and at the Blue Moon Tavern on Friday night at 9pm.

Sarah Hays Band Headlines The Central Stage Friday Night

The Sarah Hays Band is a five piece group performing originals, blues, rock and Americana music featuring the lead vocals of St. Clairsville native Sarah Hays and joined by Bob Mizell (lead guitar and vocals), Mike Schumacher (rhythm guitar and vocals), Bob Gibb (drums) and Jeff Tappe (bass guitar, trumpet and vocals). The Band performs on Saturday night from 8:3011pm on the Central Stage.

Pick’n On Country Performing Sunday On Pumpkin Stage
