Health Care Workers in High Demand C By SHELLEY HANSON Staff Writer WHEELING — When it comes to recruiting employees to work in health care facilities, those with clinical training are always in high demand, according to Wheeling Hospital Human Resources Senior Director Vincent Azzarello. One of the most in-demand workers is the nurse. “Nursing — there is obviously a large demand for nurses nationwide,” he said. “We always need lab technicians, radiologists ... anyone clinically trained and certified is always in demand.” Registered nurses in particular are in high demand. Wheeling Hospital in its recruiting efforts will sometimes offer hiring bonuses to new RNs. This includes monetary bonuses given out over the course of one’s employment with the company. Most recently, those hiring bonuses tallied up to $12,000 over a multi-year period. These days there are many ways to reach new recruits including the

newspaper, social media, jobs fairs, websites, college visits and more. Wheeling Hospital takes advantage of all these avenues. “If we’re looking for new grads, we will go to the schools and talk to students. ... We use every medium out there. ... ,” Azzarello said. “Different demographics means using different mediums.” Erin Mulrooney, recruiter for Trinity Health System of Steubenville, said the positions that hospital most needs to fill at this time include housekeepers, dietary aides, registered nurses and licensed practical nurses. “We use a variety of both active and passive recruiting strategies to fill these particular positions. We rely heavily on advertisement and resume databases ... ,” Mulrooney said. “We maintain a presence at all local job fairs, we hold a variety of ‘hiring fairs,’ and we maintain a relationship with local colleges and universities.” According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor of Statistics, the need to fill health care jobs continues to grow.

“Employment of health care occupations is projected to grow 18 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations, adding about 2.4 million new jobs. Health care occupations are projected to add more jobs than any of the other occupational groups. This projected growth is mainly due to an aging population, leading to greater demand for health care services,” the BLS states. “The median annual wage for health care practitioners and technical occupations (such as registered nurses, physicians and surgeons, and dental hygienists) was $64,770 in May 2017, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations in the economy of $37,690. “Health care support occupations (such as home health aides, occupational therapy assistants, and medical transcriptionists) had a median annual wage of $28,710 in May 2017, lower than the median Photo by Scott McCloskey annual wage for all occupations in Wheeling Hospital uses a variety methods to hire health care s e the economy.” workers for its locations in the region.

Billed as the “Connection to Your Future,” the event promises to bring employers together with potential employees to help both meet their employment needs. The event is sponsored by The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, The Times Leader, The Herald Star and the Weirton Daily Times. Admission is free, and attendees are urged to dress appropriately for an interview and to bring several copies of their resume to share with prospective employers.

For those attending, free parking also is available next door to the arena at the Robert C. Byrd Intermodal Transportation Center. Parking passes can be validated at the event, organizers said. In addition to the opportunity to meet with potential employers face-to-face, the event will feature two presentations by Workforce WV and American Job Center. Those programs will focus on proper resume writing techniques and on honing professional interviewing skills, according to event organizers. A highlight of the day will be a series of prize giveaways. A drawing will be held every hour during the event with gift cards as prizes. Those taking part in Wednesday’s Career Expo can register at the event to become eligible to win. A total of 20 vendors have

registered to participate and seek job candidates at the event. Any other businesses or groups that would like to get involved with a booth at the 2019 Career Expo still have the chance to do so by calling Shellie Higgins at 304-2330100, ext. 238, or contact her by email at shiggins@theintelligencer.net. Participating vendors should be on site to set up and prepare for the event between 10-10:30 a.m. Wednesday. “We are very happy to be hosting this event here at WesBanco Arena,” said Pam Bennett, advertising director for The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register and The Times Leader. “If you are interested in local employment opportunities or want to learn how to better your resume or interviewing skills, you really should plan to attend.”

Environmental Safety and Service Company Provides Opportunities By SCOTT McCLOSKEY Staff Writer WHEELING — There are more job opportunities in the local energy sector than you might expect. One Belmont County environmental safety and service company provides a variety of entry-level jobs opportunities in the continuously growing natural gas and oil industry in the Ohio Valley, according to company officials. Located in the Fox Commerce Park west of St. Clairsville, Rough Cut Oil & Gas Services is a third party vendor that provides a wide variety of environmental safety (on-call) services for gas and oil companies throughout the tri-state area, according to Rough Cut Oil & Gas Services Operations Manager Roy Malone. “We install containment and lay rig mats for drilling sites,” Malone said. “We wash drilling rigs. We clean mud pit systems and frack tanks. So, there is a lot of detoxing of the equipment and we clean locations after the equipment has been moved off of it.” In addition, Malone said the firm offers equipment hauling services for gas and oil companies. Rough Cut Safety Coordinator Larry

Moore said the company will haul pretty much anything that needs to be delivered to an oil field location, including containment, barriers, pipes and other equipment. “We lay primary and secondary containment rig mats, and we haul any oil field equipment for the rigs,” Moore said. Containment mats are plastic mats that prevent pollution from getting into the storm sewer system and the environment, according to Moore. Malone said the business offers a variety of job opportunities for local residents — everything from supervisor positions to general labor jobs that will come with on-the-job training. It also is frequently hiring people to fill truck driver positions or to work as mechanics. For the general labor positions, Malone said applicants must have a valid driver’s license, be physically fit (able to lift at least 75 pounds) and be able to pass a drug test. “They have to be able to be on-call, because we are an on-call service company,” Malone added. He said while the company is looking to fill “labor intensive” positions, it also offers very competitive wages. “It’s basically a foot step into the oil fields.”

The Traits of Good Leaders and How You Can Gain Skills For Success on the Job Successful leaders have the skills to guide organizations on the right path. Such men and women are often the first up for promotions, and routinely relied on for critical projects. Solidifying your own leadership qualities can be just what you need to land a great job and start climbing the corporate ladder. Good leaders often share a key array of skills. Below are some of the qualities that make strong workplace leaders. Communication Being able to communicate effectively with all of the people in your work environment and beyond is one of the most essential leadership skills you can possess. Honest communication can build trust and being open to feedback can ensure that everyone is working toward a common goal. Effectively communicating means knowing when to speak and when to listen. Self-management It can be challenging to manage or oversee others if you can’t effectively take charge of your own tasks. Being able to self-manage involves gaining control and prioritizing goals and actions. However, it also extends to being able to manage emotions, recognize weaknesses and strengths and focus attention where it’s needed. Integrity Great leaders are trusted by others. Consistently acting with decorum and respect

and delivering on your promises will inspire others to trust you. Stick to your core beliefs and values. Confidence Effective leaders have the confidence to make decisions and stand by them. Note that there is a fine line between assertive confidence and being boastful or cocky. It may take a little while to develop the right balance that encourages others to support your efforts. Delegation Delegating tasks is not a sign of weakness. In fact, it is a quality consistently found in strong leaders. Being able to delegate means you have the confidence in others to share responsibilities based on their skill sets. Delegating also promotes teamwork and lets others know you’re not afraid to share success. Accountability Leaders make mistakes just like everyone else. Owning your mistakes like you own accomplishments is a good trait to have. Placing blame elsewhere when it’s not warranted can diminish others’ trust in you, while taking blame when it’s due will only increase that trust in you. Leadership skills are valued in all walks of life. Honing such skills can benefit professionals as they look to accomplish their goals and advance their careers.

Truck Driver Shortage Affecting Business

How to Hone Your Time Management Skills Ours is a busy society where everyone is moving from place to place quite rapidly, whether at school, home or work. As a result, many people may feel that there simply are not enough hours in the day to get it all done. Quite often people delay certain tasks until the late hours of the night as a way to catch up. But that can be detrimental to health. The National Institute of Health warns that lack of adequate sleep can affect mood, adversely affect relationships, increase anxiety, and possibly contribute to depression. Inadequate sleep is also associated with increased risk of high blood pressure, obesity and heart disease. Rather than tapping into precious hours of shut-eye, men and women can learn how to manage their time better so they complete more tasks during the day, leaving more time to relax and sleep at night. Effective time management begins with these strategies. ∫ Set priorities. Begin by setting priorities. This involves making a list of all the tasks that need to be completed, and then putting them in order of most essential to least essential. Once you understand where to first devote your attention, address items on the list in order of their priority. ∫ Develop goals. Goals do not have to be far-off ideas for the future. They can be easily reached today. Simple goals such as, “I want to remove all nonessential paperwork from my desk” can

be tackled quickly and without much effort. Goals give a person something to work toward and are important ways to steer you in the right direction. Without goals, you may wander aimlessly. Accomplishing goals of all shapes and sizes gives a feeling of accomplishment. ∫ Avoid distractions. Distractions can pull attention away from important tasks at hand. Distractions can be phone calls, text alerts, personal issues, people in the room, and many other things. Figure out how you work best and minimize distractions so that you can fully focus on your priorities. ∫ Stop multitasking. Unfortunately, multitasking is not the key to getting more things done. In fact, it could actually be hurting performance. Research conducted at Stanford University discovered that multitasking is less productive than doing a single thing at a time. You simply cannot put full effort into multiple things at once — and something will be short-changed if you try. ∫ Write things down. Keeping information floating around your mind is ineffective and can lead to stress. Put things down on paper or make digital notes to keep track of what needs to get done. Set your targets and break each task down to manageable pieces. Physically cross items off your list as they are completed. Time management is a skill that can be learned with practice and focusing on elements of success.

While traversing the nation’s highways, drivers may not realize they are in the company of people who help keep the country’s economy flowing smoothly. The various trucks seen on the roadway are crucial economic components, as are the drivers who toil hours on end behind the wheel. As vital as they are, truck drivers are now in short supply, with some citing an aging workforce, high turnover rates, increased freight demand, and “lifestyle priorities” that can make other industries seem more attractive to would-be drivers. The economic advisor Morgan Stanley reports that about 75 percent of freight in the United States is moved over the nation’s roadways by the roughly three million truckers. The American Trucking Associations says that about an additional 50,000 drivers are needed to meet deficits, particularly in the long-haul sector of the industry. If the trucking shortage goes unaddressed, industries could falter and deliveries may be late. In addition, rising costs of transporting goods by freight companies may be passed down to consumers. Industry experts fear the shortage may almost triple by the year 2026. Analysts say this problem has been festering for about 15 years. However, the recession that began in 2008 masked the issue, and when the North American economy strengthened once again, the cracks in the system be-

came more apparent. The trucking lifestyle isn’t attracting millennials and the incoming Generation Z individuals who are interested in a work-life balance, continues the ATA. If consumers are wondering why prices on certain goods have steadily risen, they may have trucker shortages to blame. Transportation costs have been problematic for companies such as PepsiCo, Halliburton, Hasbro, and Tyson Foods, just to name a few. Tyson has said freight costs spiked by an estimated $200 million in 2018. Experienced truckers who are interested in finding work or individuals new to this employment sector may find that odds of getting gainful employment are in their favor. The demand for drivers has resulted in freight companies offering higher salaries as well as signing bonuses for qualified drivers. Trucker compensation has risen as much as 12 percent a year in recent years, according to Bob Costello, chief economist at the ATA. That’s a considerable increase in wages compared to other sectors, which have barely budged recently. Additionally, while current U.S. regulations restrict commercial drivers license-holding drivers from operating across state lines until they are 21 years of age, the introduced DRIVE-Safe Act would establish an apprenticeship program for individuals under age 21 who hold a CDL to prepare them for interstate commerce.

Build Your Network En Route To Landing A New Job A new year provides a perfect opportunity to turn over a new leaf, and many people commit to doing so by making New Year’s resolutions. While there are no rules governing resolutions, certain resolutions tend to top the list of the most common year after year. Setting health and fitness goals are very common, but so are resolutions to switch careers. In fact, a 2017 survey from YouGov found that 14 percent of respondents were committed to finding a new job in 2018. Building a strong professional network can help people find a fulfilling job when they are looking to advance their careers. The following tips can help professionals establish such a network. ∫ Recognize networking is a two-way street. Networking can be an effective way to find a new job, and it’s also a great way to help other people do the same. While you’re looking for a new job, if you come across opportunities that aren’t a good fit for you but might be for someone in your network, don’t hesitate to contact them. Your efforts will be appreciated, and those you help might do the same for you if they come across job openings that suit your background. ∫ Build your online profile. LinkedIn, a social media site for professionals, is a go-to resource for human resources officials, and it’s also a valuable way to stay connected with

professional acquaintances. Career services professionals advise adding anyone you have worked with to your LinkedIn network. Continue building your profile as your network grows and you work with more people. When others invite you to join their network, accept those invitations. ∫ Update your resume. Update your resume as often as you deem necessary. Colleagues you’ve worked with in the past who are within your LinkedIn network may periodically view your profile, and an updated resume is a great way to keep them abreast of how your career is going. If they can see what you’ve accomplished since you last worked with them, they might be more inclined to reconnect or recommend you for a job opening. ∫ Stay in touch. Professional networks are most effective for professionals who keep in touch with their colleagues and acquaintances. Follow up with colleagues you’ve worked with in the past to see if there’s anything you can do for them or to check in on how a project you discussed with them is going. Staying in touch can shed light on job opportunities or open other doors that might facilitate your job search. A strong professional network can help professionals advance their careers and help others looking to do the same.

Resume Writing Rules to Follow When professionals are ready to take a new step in their careers, it’s wise to revisit their old resumes and see what can be done to update them for the current day and age. This is especially true for people who may have been out of the job-seeking arena for some time. Writing a resume can be complicated. The rules for finding a new job are continually evolving, and resumes remain a big component of that process. The following are some current resume trends that will help professionals stand out from the masses. Consider design Design your resume so it will look good whether it’s viewed on a screen or a mobile phone or printed on paper. Classic serif style fonts can make a resume seem dated, so select modern fonts that are crisp. The idea is for the resume to look balanced and clear, without being overdone with modifications, like italics and bold lettering. However, a spot of color could provide much-needed attention. Be brief yet effective A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of resumes they receive. In fact, automated resume bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a resume. If a

resume is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty. Keep juicy details up top Format the resume so the most pertinent information is within the top one-third of the document. Beef up a summary statement and use it in lieu of an objective. Make sure that summary includes keywords that promote your skills and experience to potentially lure the recruiter into reading more. Tweak job titles Mimic phrasing from the job listing to beat the bots and get resumes flagged for review. Slightly change job position titles so they mirror the wording used. For example, if a recruiter is looking for a “financial account manager,” and you have the experience, list your title as something like “Senior manager of new financial accounts.” Who you know Landing a new job is often about what you know, but getting a foot in the door is also largely influenced by who you know. Include any professional groups to which you belong or alumni associations. Who knows? The recruiter may have the same alma mater, and you can bond over your shared mascot. Keywords, phrasing, formatting, and having the right skills for the job can ensure a resume is seen by a recruiter, and perhaps even lead to a new career.

Job Hunting Tips For Young Women Young women preparing to enter the workforce may discover a job market that’s difficult to crack. Getting a foot in the door in your desired field is not always easy, but young women looking to land that first job out of college can consider the following tips to help them take that all-important first step toward a rewarding career. ∫ Decide on a path. Blindly searching for work or any old job is a recipe for an aimless search that likely won’t land you a job you enjoy. Choose what it is that you want to do and who you hope to do it for, and then you can proceed with a more refined search that does not include you spending time pursuing positions you don’t want. ∫ Don’t be afraid to seek advice. Once you determine some companies you may want to work for, don’t be afraid to seek advice from people who already work for those companies. Even if such businesses don’t have any current openings, you might be able to schedule informational meetings. Treat such meetings like you would a job interview, asking questions about the industry and what you can do to get your foot in the door. Once such meetings have concluded, send a hand-written thank-you note to the person who took time out of their day to give you the informational meeting. ∫ Learn from each job interview. Many people, especially young people just starting out, go through many job interviews before finally land-

ing a job. Each interview is not just an opportunity to land a job or hone your interviewing skills, but also a chance to learn what employers are looking for. Many interviews for entry-level jobs are similar regardless of the industry, so make note of your responses that went over well and those that might need a little more work. ∫ Be prepared to explain why you should be hired. Job seekers should be able to explain both their enthusiasm for the job and why they are right for that job. Keep your description of your capabilities concise, but don’t be afraid to confidently state why you are the best possible candidate. ∫ Look for volunteering opportunities. After you have targeted a field you want to work in, you may find that there are few paying opportunities within that field. But you might be able to volunteer or even pursue an internship if you only recently graduated from college. Volunteering or accepting an unpaid internship is a great way to start making some contacts and gaining some legitimate experience, and working for free might just indicate to prospective employers that you are serious about pursuing a particular career and not just landing a job. Young women may be met with a difficult job market upon graduating from college. But there are ways to make job hunts easier and land the job of your dreams.

The Right Ways to Update a Resume The job market can be competitive, as new graduates flood the field each and every year. But graduation season is not the only time of year when the competition to find work gets heated. The start of the new year tends to be one of the busiest times of year for new hires. According to the employment resource Simply Hired, the first Monday after New Year’s Day tends to be the busiest day for job search activity. Companies are returning to full production after the holidays, and as a result there is a flurry of new activity. This means applicants can use the last quarter of the year to prepare for job searches they will institute once the calendar turns. Many job seekers may benefit from revamping their resumes before beginning their search. It’s not uncommon for recruiters to receive thousands of resumes for each job opening they post, and the sheer volume of applicants can make it difficult for job seekers to get their resumes seen. In such instances, job seekers must take steps to tip the odds in their favor. By following these guidelines, job seekers may have a better chance of getting their resumes into the right hands. ∫ Put a professional purpose. Modern standards may suggest that listing a career “objective” is old fashioned. However, it is helpful to customize your resume so that it is geared toward the position for which you are applying. A career objective may reflect how you are a strong candidate for each specific job you apply for. Use some specifics that tie into to the particular job or company and you may catch the hiring manager’s attention in the process. ∫ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of rÈsumÈs that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy

for employers to sort through thousands of resumes. The right keywords will flag your rÈsumÈ and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your resume for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered. ∫ Trim the fat. Less is often more regarding resumes. List all of the pertinent information, then go over the resume again and again and cut out any irrelevant information to remove clutter. Only include information that is relevant to your career goals. ∫ Highlight what you have done. Rather than listing every job responsibility and position in chronological order, use a resume to highlight specific career accomplishments. This is a time to be your biggest fan and tell the world all of the great things you have accomplished. Remember to include evidence to back up the claims. According to a 2015 survey by CareerBuilder, employers say that resumes that include links to a candidate’s portfolio, website or blog garner more attention than resumes without such links. ∫ Put your own voice in the resume. Rather than using standard verbiage on your resume, personalize what you want to say. Hiring managers want to hire a human, not a machine. When speaking about yourself, be sure to use strong action words that define your skills even further. HR professionals cite terms like “managed,” “achieved” and “improved” as examples of positive, assertive words. Updating a resume with the goal of standing out among a crowded pool of applicants is a great way for job seekers to land a new job.

Occupational Therapy Has Many Benefits People may be familiar with physical therapy, which many are prescribed after suffering a sports-related injury or being injured in an accident. But less may know about occupational therapy, a form of therapy that can help individuals live full, happy lives even if they’re dealing with permanent disabilities or chronic conditions. The American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc., says that occupational therapy helps people perform daily tasks to reach goals. This can include helping children or adults with disabilities participate fully in work or school. Occupational therapy also may intervene during or after a physical or mental illness so that one can regain lost skills. Occupational therapists tend to focus on treating people who need assistance with a physical, sensory or cognitive disability. OT practitioners address psychological, social and environmental factors that can impact a person’s ability to function. Even though one may think OTs primarily treat adults, especially aging seniors, this is not the case. The health and wellness resource KidsHealth, from Nemours, indicates that children also benefit.

Occupational therapists can work with children after surgery or help those with behavioral problems. OTs also help children recover after suffering traumatic injuries, and can even help kids with developmental delays. Occupational therapy differs from physical therapy. While physical therapy deals with pain, range of motion, endurance, and strength, among other things, the AOTA notes that OT tries to hone fine motor skills, visual-perception skills and cognitive skills and to lessen sensory-processing deficits. Very often OT is used in conjunction with PT. Occupational therapy can be a rewarding career with many different opportunities. Therapists work in various settings, including schools, hospitals, rehab facilities, nursing homes, and even in independent practices. In addition, new specialities, such as assisting those with low vision or helping workers adapt to ergonomic tools, enable even more specialized concentrations. People who think they can benefit from occupational therapy should first consult with a primary care physician or a discharge team from a hospital to find out which OT services may benefit them. How to Ace Job Interviews When Switching Careers Millions of people change careers every year. Whereas professionals may have once worked for the same company for the majority, if not the entirety, of their careers, nowadays it’s not uncommon for men and women to change jobs several times before reaching retirement. Changing jobs and changing careers are not necessarily the same thing. Professionals mulling a career change will have to consider a host of factors that men and women looking to change jobs may never have to contemplate. Such factors may include returning to school and lifestyle changes designed to make living on less income more feasible. Professionals changing careers may also need to develop a strategy for handling job interviews. When changing jobs as opposed to careers, professionals can draw attention to their resumes, essentially letting their experience speak for itself. But while experience is often a feather in a job candidate’s cap, professionals changing careers may need to focus more on their futures than their pasts when interviewing for a new career. ∫ Draw attention to those skills that will apply to your new career. All of your experience and skills likely won’t transfer to your new career, but that does not mean you’re going in with an empty briefcase. Make a list of your most transferable skills, and develop an interview strategy that highlights those skills and explains how they can be applied in both the near future and over the course of your new career. ∫ Use your contacts to your advantage.

Even if much of your experience won’t transfer to your new career, your professional network might still be valuable to a prospective employer. The longer you have been working the larger your professional network likely is, so highlight those contacts in your interview and illustrate how you can put them to good use should you be hired. ∫ Showcase how you have adapted in the past. Much of the business world moves at a breakneck pace. That pace has become even faster thanks to advancements in technology that routinely affect how businesses operate. Even if you have never before changed careers, that does not mean you have not adapted to change. Make a list of the changes your employers have instituted throughout your career, highlighting how you adapted to those changes and benefited from them in their aftermath. ∫ Remain positive throughout the interview. Even if you are changing careers because you’re unhappy and/or unfulfilled in your present line of work, avoid badmouthing that industry and your past employers. Doing so will only reflect negatively on you and raise a red flag with prospective employers. Instead, explain your reasons for pursuing a new career path in terms that excite potential employers about your candidate. The decision to change careers can induce both excitement and anxiety. Maintaining a positive attitude and employing various strategies when interviewing with prospective employers can help make the transition to a new career go smoothly.

Networking has long been a way for men and women to expand their professional horizons. Networking can keep professionals abreast of the latest goings-on in their industries and provide both immediate and long-term benefits. Like many things in the business world, how people network has changed in the digital age. Embracing that change and making it work for you will likely involve changing how you network. ∫ Embrace professional social media. Social media may not have been around the last time you looked for a job, but professional social media sites such as LinkedIn are a vital component of networking in the digital age. If you haven’t done so already, establish a LinkedIn profile so you can begin connecting with other professionals in your field. ∫ Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other pro-

fessionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections. ∫ Get out of the house. Digital age networking is not limited to digital connections. Meetup. com encourages like-minded men and women to get together with real people in real life, using the internet to facilitate such connections. Men and women who sign up can use Meetup.com to connect with local professionals in their industries, attend industry-specific events and even establish their own meetup groups. A medium such as Meetup.com is great for individuals of all ages, but it might be especially valuable to established professionals looking to combine digital age networking with the more traditional networking they’re accustomed to. ∫ Be mindful of decorum. The internet is a largely informal “place,” but professionals should be mindful of decorum when networking online. Resist the temptation to use shorthand, slang or less formal language when contacting other professionals, as doing so can make you appear unprofessional. In addition, avoid making potentially controversial or contentious comments on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Networking in the digital age may intimidate working professionals accustomed to more traditional networking strategies. But while the methods may be different, effective digital age networking is not all that different from the networking strategies of yesteryear.

Change Jobs Without Burning Bridges A new year invites people to reflect on the past and make changes or set goals for the months ahead. Many people list advancing their careers among their goals at the dawn of a new year. For some, that might require getting a new job. People look for new jobs for a variety of different reasons. One of the primary motivators to look for a new job is to earn more money. Others are interested in trying a new field. The employment recruiting and networking resource The Balance: Careers indicates that the average person now changes jobs 10 to 15 times in their professional lives. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that most people now spend 4.2 years in a current job, which is down from 4.6 years in 2014. Although some people may be tempted to leave a job

with a bang, they should exit with class and professionalism. No one knows what the future brings, and it’s best to leave a job on solid terms. With this in mind, here’s how a person can change jobs successfully. ∫ Draft a letter of resignation. Clearly communicate your decision to leave the organization. Follow the proper chain of command and show respect by addressing the person to whom you directly report. Clearly communicate your intent and future plans, highlighting when changes are expected to take place. ∫ Choose the right time. Timing is everything, and some times are better for leaving a job than others. Project Management, a consultant group, says to wait until important projects are finished, rather than bailing out in the middle of crucial work.

∫ Keep an open mind. Some employers may be blindsided by an employee’s desire to leave, particularly in cases when said employee never communicated with a supervisor about the desire for more responsibility or to discuss something that may not be working. A boss who respects your work and values you as an asset may make a counter-offer. Hear him or her out and weigh your options. ∫ Give plenty of notice. While two weeks’ notice is the norm, leaving more time for an employer to find your replacement, and helping to train this individual, is a sure sign of respect for your current employer. Changing jobs can be stressful and awkward, but it can be done in a way to ensure good relations with an existing employer for years to come.
