Bordas & Bordas Is Rooted In Experience, Family, Community, Results Bordas & Bordas Attorneys PLLC, has again been voted No. 1 in the attorneys category for The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register’s Readers’ Choice Awards. “It is an honor to be chosen by the readers so many years in a row because community is at the heart of everything we do,” said Managing Partner Jamie Bordas. “Our attorneys and staff work hard to get the best results for our clients and when you receive an award like this, it is a great feeling to know that our community is behind us.” With record results and many of the firm’s attorneys having been named as Best Lawyers, Super Lawyers and Rising Stars year after year, Bordas & Bordas, founded by Jim and Linda Bordas in 1985, has established a reputation as one of the premier law firms in the region. The firm includes 19 attorneys and nearly 30 staff members with offices in Pittsburgh, Wheeling, St. Clairsville and Moundsville. Jim Bordas said that the firm’s reputation is rooted in its size, knowledge and resources, all of which help handle cases across a broad range of practice areas. “Our firm has been able to obtain outstanding results for our clients in a variety of areas of plaintiff’s litigation, obtaining justice for our clients that they would otherwise be unable to resolve,” he said. “Almost all of our cases are handled on a contingency fee basis, which means our clients only pay a fee if a recovery is made for them. Initial consultations are always free, and no retainer is required as the firm advances all case expenses.” The Bordas & Bordas logo is a shield
with four quadrants. The quadrants symbolize four things that the firm believes in experience, family, community and results. In the center of the logo is a cross that represents the firm’s Christian values. Jamie Bordas noted that the firm was able to obtain significant results this year with a $2 million medical malpractice verdict in Pittsburgh, an $8 million trucking collision settlement and a $19.5 million gas site wrongful death settlement. Experience and results are two strong focal points at the firm, but community and family are equally as important. Partner Linda Bordas takes pride in seeing the firm participate in community events and help others in need. “Whether it is an individual or a group, we are always happy to give back to the communities in which we work. We are honored to develop such strong connections with a variety of extraordinary groups and families.” Jamie Bordas serves as president of the YMCA Board of Directors and Partner Scott Blass and his wife, Kathy, founded Ohio Valley Breast Cancer Awareness, Inc., which holds the annual Driving Fore a Cure golf tournament each year to provide support to women in breast cancer treatment. In 2014, Jim Bordas created the Bordas & Bordas Anti-Bully Fighting for Justice Award, which recognizes a student in each of the 15 OVAC schools in Ohio, Marshall and Belmont counties, who stand up for others in and out of the classroom. More than $8,000 was awarded to Anti-Bully Ambassadors throughout the region in 2018. In addition, the firm became the title sponsor this year of the Bordas & Bordas

Elmhurst Excels as Retirement, Assisted Living Residence
WHEELING — Elmhurst, The House of Friendship at 1228 National Road in Wheeling, has been serving the needs of older adults in the community for 128 years, continuously. According to Jamie Crow, Elmhurst executive director, “Community leaders realized there was a growing need for the care of older women with no home ties in the area and gathered to provide a solution. Today, evolving from its earliest mission of providing housing for older women, Elmhurst continues to excel as a retirement and licensed assisted living residence for older adults. Current residents not only include those from the Wheeling area, but also include those from other states who have moved back to their roots or whose family members live in the area,” Crow noted. A Brief History of Elmhurst In the spring of 1887, Mrs. David A. Cunningham, wife of the minister at the First Presbyterian Church, called a meeting of prominent Wheeling citizens to consider the establishment of a home “for women whose home ties had been severed,” an urgent need. Mrs. Cunningham, Miss Lizzie Boyd, and Mrs. Helen Canfield were well-known as “pioneers in social welfare,” locally. In 1887, they invited area ministers to join them to discuss the project. A week later, a second meeting was held, and 350 circulars were sent out seeking sup-

The organization purchased a home at the southwest corner of Thirteenth and Jacob Streets. A matron was hired, and a committee was formed to find furnishings for the house. After the first year, a building more suitable was purchased at 37 13th Street. On Jan.16, 1890, the organization was formally incorporated under the name the West Virginia Home for Aged and Friendless Women. The house provided a home for elderly women and “temporary protection to wayward, friendless women and girls.” When the Florence Crittenton Home opened, the organization changed its name to the WV Home for Aged Women. To live in the home, women had to have been West Virginia residents for three years, and of Ohio County for at least one year. Funding: Sustaining the home came from the funds of the corporation itself and gifts received on the annual Donation Days held each May. Donation Days were held at the home and included musical entertainment provided by local talents. The public was invited to attend with donations of any size welcomed. Donations also were received at Christmas and Thanksgiving. It was noted in a 1913 news article “Except for those voluntary gifts, the
home would have to close its doors as the work is carried on entirely by free will offerings of the charitably disposed people in the city of Wheeling.” In 1940, the family of Bloch Brothers’ Tobacco magnate Samuel S. Bloch donated his home and estate at 1228 National Road to the organization. A new wing was added to the existing historic mansion and changes were made to the criteria for entry. At one point, Elmhurst provided a continuum of care. As times changed, Elmhurst became a retirement home, allowing men, as well as women and couples to reside therein. A private pay system was implemented, as was the designation as a licensed West Virginia assisted living residence in 1998. In 2005, a four-story addition was built attached to the original addition to the mansion. One and two-bedroom suites are located within that addition, as well as administrative offices and a multi-purpose activity room. The main entrance to the building is located in the new addition in the rear of the property. Today, 44 residents reside at Elmhurst where there is around-the-clock personnel on duty. Two registered nurses are on the Elmhurst team of employees. As a private pay entity, Elmhurst residents pay a one-monthly, all-inclusive fee. On-site Blue Sky Therapy is available as is an in-house salon, Crow explained. Elmhurst also is approved for Aid and Attendance from the Veterans’ Administration.

Figaretti’s Tops List of Italian Restaurants for Readers’ Choice
WHEELING — It’s easy to see why Figaretti’s Restaurant is ranked first among Italian restaurants in the 2018 Readers’ Choice competition — just look at the scrumptious selections and savor the authentic goodness created for patrons’ enjoyment. The restaurant also has garnered the Best Italian Restaurant in West Virginia award. In 2017, U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., congratulated Figaretti’s Restaurant with a citation from the Congressional Record, recognizing the family and business for its success. Abbey Napple, a manager at the restaurant, said Figaretti’s will celebrate its 25th year at its Mount de Chantal Road location on Saturday, Dec. 1. Jessica Thorngate also serves as a manager. Dino Figaretti and his father, Tony Figaretti, own the wellknown eatery that also offers catering for special events, plus delivery. “We’re famously known for our meatballs and sausage, all homemade,” Napple said. “Our lasagna is very popular. Our steak and seafood are top of the line.” Other popular items on the menu include chicken parmigiana and veal parmigiana. “We have a lot of different
ravioli,” she added. Figaretti’s handmade ravioli is prepared with a choice of seven different fillings: lobster, steak, mushroom, meat, cheese, blue crab, and spinach and cheese. Another popular option is Figaretti’s take-out special offered all day, every day. Napple said the take-out special features a choice of noodles (one of four varieties) topped with marinara sauce and accompanied by salad and bread for $5.50. Also, Figaretti’s menu offers several new items including Italian Antipasto and delectable stuffed peppers. The owners are hands-on operators of this area favorite site. Customers can select from an extensive wine list for their dining experience. “Dino is here every night, working hard and making sure everything is running smoothly in an orderly manner,” Napple said. The family patriarch also is a regular presence at the restaurant. “It wouldn’t be the same without Tony. He walks around and greets everyone,” she added. The Figaretti family is proud of being named the Readers’ Choice best Italian restaurant for the second consecutive year. “We want to thank our customers for voting,” Dino said. Napple said. Elaine Hogan is the manager of the catering service. Dino Figaretti’s brother, Tony Jr., operates a manufacturing plant, located on Peters Run Road, that produces the restaurant’s famous spaghetti sauce. The sauce can be purchased in grocery stores throughout the East Coast.
“The sauce is sold all over the country at different grocery stores,” Napple said. “You can buy the jarred sauce on Amazon as well.” Figaretti’s is located at 1035 Mount de Chantal Road in Wheeling’s Clator neighborhood, and can be reached by calling 304243-5625.

Zambito Dentistry Offers More Than Just Great Smiles WHEELING — There is nothing artificial about the smiles at Zambito Family Dentistry at 1201 Mount de Chantal Road in Wheeling. Under the direction of Dr. Ricardo “Ric” Zambito and son, Dr. Christopher Zambito, patients are greeted with smiles from a caring staff in a family-friendly atmosphere for all ages. “One thing that distinguishes Zambito Family Dentistry is not just what we do, but who we are,” Dr. Ricardo Zambito said. He said the focus each day is not just dental services, but the well-being of each patient. We have been so blessed in our practice and it’s still growing.” The services available from Zambito Family Dentistry range from preventive care, to dental implants, fixed and removable appliances, cosmetic dentistry, tooth whitening, fillings, tooth restoration and more. On Nov. 17, Zambito Dentistry offered free dental services to area veterans. The staff took care of 80 veterans in that one day, providing everything from essential teeth cleaning to more intensive dental treatments. As Dr. Ricardo explained, unless a veteran is 100 percent disabled, the Veterans Administration does not provide dental services to veterans. “I’ve written to Presidents in the past about this but never heard from any of them. Now I’ve written to President Trump and we’ll see what happens.”
After a long day in the office, Dr. Ricardo said it was very gratifying to serve the veterans. He said several cried when they saw the results of their dental work. He told each one of them that he wanted to see them smile. “I think it was more satisfying to us to know we could help. The staff donates their time for this. My son Chris and the incredible staff were phenonmenal,” he said. Dr. Ricardo began his practice since 1982 and his son Christopher joined in
2013. The senior Zambito is experienced in dental implants and keeps up with “modern dentistry” practices. He also provides Botox treatment for severe headaches. Both Zambitos are skilled in cosmetic dentistry while Christopher is trained to offer Invisalign and is certified in the Six Month Smile program. Dr. Ricardo also was first to bring teeth cleaning and dentistry services to the Good Shepherd Nursing Home and Wheeling Hospital’s continuous care center. He also
provides dentistry at Wheeling Hospital and has been teaching in various dental offices. The Zambito Dentistry is open: Monday: 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday: 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Wednesday: 9 a.m. - 5.p.m. Thursday: 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Friday: 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday morning hours are available by appointment. From Our Hearts...To Yours Some holidays are more memorable than others, and it isn’t always the year that you got the most gifts that stays in your mind or heart. Often, the holiday that means the most is the one where a special person was able to be home with you again. Or, maybe there was an empty place at the table, but the whole family pulled together, bonding to each other to hold that place in your hearts until the missing person could be reunited with you. We want you to know that this Christmas season, we’re thinking of you. Our hearts go out to you now with good wishes for the holidays and much hope for the coming year. From all of us to all of you, may your holidays be filled with warm memories that you can treasure for years to come. May you celebrate our Savior Jesus Christ’s birthday and keep him in your heart throughout the year.

DiCarlo’s Brings Three Generations of Expertise
Toni DiCarlo followed in her father’s footsteps to operate the Wheeling DiCarlo’s Pizza, and now works along with her children, Lauren and Christopher Jones. DiCarlo said she had grown up with a passion for pizza, and opened the doors to her own business more than 30 years ago. “I’m the youngest of five kids,” she said. “I loved (the business) all my life. I’d even skip school sometimes to help out down at the local wholesale store. ... I started my first retail pizza shop in July of 1985, and from there, I opened my second location in Dallas Pike.” Over the years, DiCarlo has taken con-
trol of numerous other locations, including the store in Glen Dale, which was originally owned by her father, Galdo DiCarlo, in 1957. Growing the store and the chain, DiCarlo said her children have followed after her in working at the shop in various capacities. “(Christopher) has been doing this with me all his life, too,” she said. “As I worked the business with my father growing up, so too have I with both of my children, Lauren and Christopher Jones. ... Lauren worked the pizza shop whenever she was back from college, and whenever she was back from doing her physical therapy classes. Whenever she wasn’t studying, she worked the pizza shop.”
ORIGINAL
Lauren, currently a physical therapist for the Ryan Ferns Healthplex, assists with bookkeeping and other administrative functions of the business, while Christopher started working at the shop in high school, where he continues to do so today. “He continues to work beside me, in all aspects of operation, from baking to administrative duties,” DiCarlo said. Italian immigrants Michael and Caroline DiCarlo began their business in the Ohio Valley by opening an Italian grocery store in Steubenville in the early 1900s. Their son, Primo DiCarlo, returned from serving in World War II, and brought home a popular
food that had sprung up in Italian cafes, starting the family’s investment in pizza. In 1945, Primo DiCarlo opened the first location in Steubenville, and by 1949, Galdo DiCarlo opened the second location in Wheeling, serving crispy-crust square pies that quickly became a local favorite. The DiCarlo’s Dynasty has received media accolades by Parade, Gourmet, and Plate magazines, and has scored kudos from bigname pizza buffs. Presidential hopeful John Kerry offered a shout out to DiCarlo’s while campaigning in Wheeling in 2004, and country music star Brad Paisley has professed his love for the Ohio Valley institution.

Patsy’s Pizza Continued Success Built on Its Loyal Customers
WHEELING — Known for their famous square slices, Patsy’s Pizza in Elm Grove has been voted among the best for most popular pizza among readers of the Wheeling newspapers. It’s the loyal return customers and hardworking employees over the years that have continued to make the popular pizza shop the continued success it has been for nearly half a century, according to store manager Kelly Mitchem. It’s a long-standing tradition for many Ohio Valley natives returning home while visiting family and friends to patronize the carry-out only pizza shop located along National Road in the Elm Grove business district. Customers can order the pizza by the slice or tray and add extra cheese or extra pepperoni. “We are honored. We definitely have loyal customers,” Mitchem explained. She said they are really fortunate to have a thriving businesses. “We have been really busy lately, and we have really good workers. ... Nothing has changed, everything is the same,” she added. Patsy’s Pizza was known to many as the Elm Grove DiCarlo’s for several decades before the name was changed last year to pay homage to the long-time former owner Pasty Vespa, who first started his own pizza shop in Elm Grove in 1969. Prior to that, he worked with other pizza shops in Glen Dale and Bellaire locations. Vespa first came here from humble beginnings in 1949 following World War II, before getting involved with a local pizza business. “I started in 1962. I started with DiCarlo’s,” Vespa commented while talking about his pizza career. His son Joe Vespa, who recently took over ownership of the pizza shop for his father, said his dad taught him about the importance of respecting their customers and hard-working employees. He said they make their pizza Photo by Scott McCloskey fresh daily to satisfy their loyal customers. Wheeling Hospital Reports Great Success in Program
Offering Free Screenings for Adults at Risk for Vascular, Heart Diseases
WHEELING — Wheeling Hospital continues to provide free vascular disease screenings to all at-risk adults as part of its Dare to C.A.R.E. initiative. “DARE to C.A.R.E. has been a great success in identifying people who have vascular issues. Without this free service, they may not have known they have health problems,” said Crystal Pietranton, Cardiac Services coordinator. “We’re so proud to offer this service to our community.” The screenings, sponsored in collaboration with the Heart Health Foundation, are held each Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Tower 2, Suite 102. Dare to C.A.R.E. was established to raise awareness of the hidden risks associated with vascular disease and encourage early intervention to prevent serious complications or disabilities. Many of the conditions associated with vascular disease can go undetected until they are severe and can cause serious complications or death. The Dare to C.A.R.E. program screens for common vascular diseases: Carotid artery disease: cause of preventable stroke Abdominal aortic aneurysm: highly deadly if the aneurysm ruptures Renal artery stenosis: when untreated, frequently leads to the need for hemodialysis Extremity artery disease: can cause seri-

complications from vascular issues that may currently go undetected,” said Klay. “We are asking any adult who is older than 60 years of age — or younger if other risk factors are present — to be proactive about their overall heart health and take advantage of the free screenings.” He said that if vascular diseases are detected early, the more likely they can be managed with lifestyle interventions and medications instead of invasive surgery. Potential at-risk criteria for vascular disease include age (greater than 60) and risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or smoking. Individuals over the age of 50 who have any if the listed factors also are considered at-risk. Family history of vascular disease also is a contributing factor, including events in the immediate family such as stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure, kidney failure, sudden cardiac death or abdominal aortic aneurysms. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S. Every year, more than 600,000 people die of heart disease — that’s one out of every four deaths. Unfortunately, the majority of people with the disease are living unaware of their risks. Cardiovascular disease affects the heart and arteries of the body. It is called coronary artery disease — CAD — when the heart is involved, and peripheral arterial disease — PAD — when it involves arteries in other parts of the body, such as the arms, legs, kidneys, intestines and brain. To make an appointment for a free screening, call 304-243-8362.
