Cornelis Jonson van Ceulen (1593-1661)

Portrait of a noblewoman

The purported artist of this work, Cornelis Johnson van Ceulen, was born in London

to Dutch parents. Beginning his career around 1619, van Ceulen was a sought-after portraitist to a developing gentry of courtiers, Dutch immigrants, and gentlemen who desired portraits befitting their station. The sitter in her pink dress, exaggerated lace collar, contrasting bows, and choker of pearls with baroque pearl earrings displays an understated elegance and comfortable wealth typical of a woman of her class.

Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680)

Portrait of Thomas, 1st Earl of Elgin

Thomas Bruce, 1st Earl of Elgin, was born to Edward Bruce, 1st Lord Kinloss and

Magdalene Clerk in Edinburgh in 1599. He remained in Royal favor throughout his life, being vested as a Knight in 1638, created Baron Bruce of Whorlton in 1641, and “Keeper of the King’s Park” in Byfleet from 1643 to 1647. Peter Lely arrived in England in 1643 from Sweden and became one of the most sought-after and prolific portraitists in England. This portrait, set against a neutral backdrop, shows the sitter in monochromatic clothes interrupted by the brightness of his hair and complexion, displaying a fashionable “Van Dyck” beard.

Michael Dahl (1659-1743)

Portrait of Mary Parker

Mary Parker was born circa 1692, the younger sister of Catherine Perceval, Countess Dowager of Egmont. She was married to Daniel Dering, Auditor to Frederick, Prince of Wales and one of the Commissioners of wine licenses. Her portrait by Swedish-born English portrait painter Michael Dahl shows a confident Mary in an elegant white dress draped with a blue sash; one arm rests on a red velvet cushion while the other holds a flowering fruit branch. This is a fine example of the artist’s technique displaying adroit brushwork in her face and excellent sense of composition positioning her between a lush landscape and flowing fountain.

Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788)

Portrait of Mrs. Isaac Elton

Ann Tierney was born on May 22, 1748, the daughter of merchant James Tierney.

At the age of 20 on October 20, 1768, she became the second wife of Mr. Isaac Elton who held the office of Sheriff of Bristol from circa 1765 through 1770. This work, a companion to a portrait of Mr. Isaac Elton, was likely completed in the early 1770s and features the artist’s typical style of that time. Gainsborough’s sweeping brushstrokes capture the enigmatic beauty and direct gaze of the sitter, who would have been in her mid-20s at the time this work was completed. The clear tone of her skin, luxurious finish of the fabric, delicate openwork of the lace, and lustrous nacre of the pearls worn by Mrs. Elton required Gainsborough’s skillful hand to capture them at their most sublime.

Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792)

Portrait of an officer

As Edmund Burke would write in his eulogy, “Sir Joshua Reynolds was on very many

accounts one of the most memorable men of his Time.” Born in Plympton, Devon in 1723, Sir Joshua Reynolds began his long career with an apprenticeship in 1740 with Thomas Hudson whose work also appears in this auction. After a stint on the Continent, he returned to England in 1752 and established his studio in London. A founder and president of the Royal Academy of Arts Reynolds was Knighted by King George III in 1769; the second artist bestowed that honor. The officer shown in this portrait in his green waistcoat with red jacket shows a serious expression and a hint of movement in the pose, befitting a man of action.

Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797)

Portrait of a lady, possibly Elizabeth Pigot

The likely sitter of this painting, Elizabeth Pigot, was the wife of William Pigot, a

wealthy fabric dealer. The dress worn in this portrait is fitting for a fashionable woman with access to fine fabrics and pearls, an expensive commodity at the time. The billowy stole wafting in the breeze from the landscape beyond creates a beautiful effect and highlights the relaxed expression of the sitter.
