P Theatre DIRECTORY directory P Tales from the Altamaha 2014 in Lyons Listen… can you hear it? The rustle of the wind in the trees, birds chirping in flight, and the waters of the Altamaha? It’s calling, calling…and once again you will have the opportunity to be transported back to a time when Southern traditions were just being forged. This award-winning Georgia folk-like play is drawn from the writings of Colonel T. Ross Sharpe, a local attorney born and raised on the Altamaha River, who wrote a series of essays in the local newspaper during the 1950’s and 60’s about the regional settlers of the area around the river. Since 2005, Tales from the Altamaha has entertained audiences from all over the southeast with a different selection of Colonel Ross’ stories interwoven with bluegrass music performed by the River Rat Review Band. Tales from the Altamaha 2014 takes the stage for its tenth anniversary production in April and May with “A Decade of Sweet Memories,” a collection of the best scenes and songs from the last nine years. A project of Lyons Better Hometown, Tales from the Altamaha continues to be a cultural celebration steeped in the Southern traditions unique to rural South Georgia. Make plans now to embark on the ride of a lifetime as you experience the lives, loves, losses, scandals, and just plain ol’ gossip that are Tales from the Altamaha. Tickets range in price from $10-$20. Discounts are available for groups of 20 or more. Performance dates will be April 25-26, 29, May 1-3. Fitzgerald Wild Chicken Festival The exotic and beautiful Burmese chickens are a familiar part of the downtown Fitzgerald scene. Resembling fighting game chickens, they sport brilliant orange and yellow ruffs and gleaming black tail feathers. The Burmese chickens were released in Ben Hill County in the 1960’s by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as an additional game bird but somehow made their way to downtown Fitzgerald. There they have a love-hate relationship with residents, some of whom buy seed and feed them while others chase them out of gardens with a broom! The chickens wake up May folks, create minor traffic problems, and, 17 – ST. MARYS – Music in the Waterfront some claim, even keep the bugs away. Park, 7-9pm. 912-882-4000. Much to See and Do in Warner Robins From historical and cultural landmarks to outdoor recreation, there’s so much to do and see in Warner Robins. The city is best known as the home of Robins Air Force Base, the Museum of Aviation (2nd largest in the country!), and the Southeast Regional Little League Headquarters. Visitors can view the aircraft traffic from the Museum of Aviation’s observation deck and enjoy an exciting air show and “Wings and Wheels” car show. For railroad enthusiasts, visit “depot row” where you’ll find the historic 1944 train depot which is now the E. L. Greenway Welcome Center, designated a National Historic Site. Mildred’s Country Store is full of local antiques offering a glimpse of “the way things used to be” from the days when Warner Robins was known as Wellston. The Southern Railroad caboose X556 from 1971 houses a railroad display. The Elberta Train Depot will soon be a heritage center highlighting the intertwined history of the local community, the railroad, and the growth of Wellston Army Depot to Robins Field and now to Robins Air Force Base. The moderate climate in Warner Robins will lure you to enjoy four championship golf courses, twelve parks, the Wellston Walking Trail, Little League Ball, soccer, championship football, swimming and Georgia Golden Olympics for the kids over 50. For information, phone 478-922-5100, or 888-288-9742, or visit www.warner robinsvisitorscenter.com.
