METRO ATLANTA Scott Antique Market in Atlanta The Scott Antique Market at the Atlanta Expo Centers, the world’s largest monthly indoor antique show, features two buildings stocked full of pretty much every antique imaginable. With 366,000 square feet to explore, and over 3,500 booths, plus outdoor shopping and even a courtyard of merchandise, it’s almost impossible to leave without finding exactly what you’re looking for, according to the show’s organizers. All things antique wind up at the Scott Antique Market – antique furniture, vintage hardware, rare art, stunning glassware, heirloom silver, incredible jewelry, and so much more. The Scott Antique Market, described as “America’s favorite treasure hunt,” always takes place the second weekend of every month at the Atlanta Expo Centers which straddle I-285 at Exit 55. Parking is free; admission is only $5; and a complimentary shuttle goes between both buildings. Show hours are Thursdays 12:45-6pm, Fridays & Saturdays 9am-6pm, and Sundays 10am-4pm. METRO ATLANTA Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth Georgia’s Official Transportation History Museum has over 90 pieces of retired railway rolling stock: trains from the 1920’s and 1950’s including vintage steam and diesel locomotives, passenger and private cars, WWII troop kitchen, railway post office car, wooden freight cars, baggage cars, cabooses, and maintenance of way equipment. The museum is also home to buses from MARTA’s historic fleet and predecessor systems, vintage cabs and firefighting equipment, and more. The Locomotive Celebration on June 7-8 will include temporary tattoos, locomotive hunt, refreshments, and a kids’ craft corner. The museum will celebrate Independence Day on July 4 with both trains running and a variety of holiday themed refreshments. Trains, Trucks, and Tractors on Aug. 2-3 will offer refreshments, temporary caboose tattoos, craft corner for children, hayrides, and exhibits of tractors, trucks, and other vehicles, both old and new. Located at 3595 Buford Hwy. in Duluth, the Museum follows a seasonal schedule; days and hours of operation are available on the website. METRO ATLANTA The Civil War in Sandy Springs Exhibit and Stars and Stripes Celebration The Civil War in Sandy Springs exhibit will be on view at the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum through April 1, 2015, and is free, made possible by the Frances and Beverly Dubose Foundation. The story of occupied Sandy Springs is significant to the major turning point for the Civil War. The exhibit includes rare artifacts and previously unpublished accounts of the occupation of Sandy Springs by firsthand witnesses. It tells the story of the people of this small farming community who lived through the invasion and occupation and the effects these courses of events had on their lives. Sporting Events South Georgia Outdoor Expo in Douglas The South Georgia Outdoor Expo will be held at Central Square Complex in downtown Douglas on Friday, August 22, from 1-7pm and Saturday, August 23, from 9am-5pm. Vendors will fill the grounds and both exhibit halls at Central Square Complex with items relating to outdoor apparel, hunting gear, ATVs, boats, hunting/camping trips, fishing accessories, and more specialty outdoor merchandise. A Wild Game Supper will be held on Thursday, Aug. 22, with a guest speaker. Gopher Plantation will be serving venison, wild hog, quai,l and all the fixings that will surely satisfy any appetite. Tickets for the supper will be $15 per person. Attendees will experience a two day event packed with live demonstrations, hands-on activities, and more fun for the entire family. On Friday and Saturday, Rocky Boots and Norris Shoe Store will present Steve Scruggs, Rocky Snake Master, “Snakes Alive” educational seminar. Admission will be $5 for ages 12 and up. Sporting Events Chattahoochee River Summer Splash The coolest way to escape the heat this summer will be at the 7th Annual Summer Splash at the Chattahoochee River on Saturday, July 26. Guests are invited to bring their kayak, canoe, or raft, or rent one from the local outfitters. The six mile float will last about three hours, depending upon the river’s current and amount of paddling. The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and Sandy Springs Hospitality & Tourism will host this signature event and have teamed up with Cooper Global Transportation and the City of Sandy Springs. Make sure you register early for the event to ensure your spot on the river. After the float there will be music, food, and fun waiting for everyone to enjoy at Powers Island. Parking for Summer Splash is at Powers Island, and a shuttle will transport participants to Morgan Falls to begin the float. gia on My Mind The National Civil War Naval Museum in Columbus Discover the little known stories of sailors, soldiers, and civilians, both free and enslaved, as affected by the Navies of the American Civil War through award-winning exhibits including the largest surviving Civil War ironclad, the CSS Jackson. Explore unique artifacts, ship replicas, and a great gift shop for history lovers. Special events are held year-round. During June visitors can see an original documentary produced by the National Civil War Naval Museum about the USS Water Witch. On July 12 the museum theater piece Medical Mysteries will feature stories of doctors and nurses serving in the Civil War navies as well as a dramatization of the autopsy of John Wilkes Booth aboard the USS Montauk. The 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Mobile Bay will be Aug. 1-3, and visitors can see a webcast of it at the museum in Columbus. Apple-Pickin’ Jubilee in Ellijay The 19th annual Apple Pickin’ Jubilee will be held on weekends from Sept. 6-Oct. 26 from 9am-6pm at Hillcrest Orchards, nine miles east of Ellijay on Hwy. 52. Pick your own apples. Milk Buttercup the cow. Jump for joy on the Giant Jumping Pillow. Get lost in the “Corny Kid’s Maze.” Ride the pedal cart track. There will be pig races, pony rides, tricycle rides, honey bee demonstrations, clogging, country bands, and wagon rides. Visit the Moonshine and Farm House Museums, the petting farm, the Children’s Play Area with giant slides, and the Enchanted Forest and Nature Trail with scenes from nursery rhymes and fairy tales. The Hiawassee River Railroad Ride the historic Hiwassee River Railroad scenic rail excursion through the unspoiled Cherokee National Forest, along the beautiful Hiwassee River, and through the secluded Hiwassee River Gorge. Watermelon Days Festival in Cordele Visit the Cordele-Crisp County area June 2-28 for the 64th Annual Watermelon Days Festival, and celebrate the crop that has made the area famous. Butternut Creek Festival in Blairsville The l6th annual Butternut Creek Festival, sponsored by the High Country Artisans, Inc., will be held July 19-20 from 10am-5pm at Meeks Park in Blairsville. Over seventy-five of the finest craftsmen and artists will offer yard art, stained glass, rustic birdhouses, terracotta garden art, gourds, rustic furniture, soy wax candles, stoneware pottery, cedar birdhouses, wire-wrapped jewelry, hand-turned woodcrafts, fiber art, purses and totes, musical instruments, photography, quilts, and much more. Demonstrations by artists will include blacksmith Butch Dey of Norcross and Mel McEwen of Cleveland as he carves a bear or raccoon, as well as demonstrations on broom making, band saw puzzles, pottery turning, basket weaving, and making cornhusk dolls. The Real Squeal: Lyons Barbeque & Music Festival Lyons, Georgia will host its 5th annual barbeque festival on October 10-11. The Real Squeal is a Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned event with both professional and amateur barbeque competitions. The amateur contest kicks off the festival on Friday, October 10, in downtown Lyons with a street dance, great barbeque, traditional festival food, a classic car cruise-in and cruise-out, and fireworks. Perspectives 2014: 12th Annual Georgia Pottery Invitational The Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation will host Perspectives from Aug. 30-Sept. 17 from 10am-5pm at OCAF in Watkinsville. 4th of July July 4th Freedom Fest Event in Douglas The Douglas Exchange Club, the City of Douglas, and community partners ask everyone to celebrate the 4th of July in Douglas, Georgia. Freedom Fest has become a yearly tradition for Douglas, Coffee County, and surrounding cities. This year on Friday, July 4, at JC Adams Municipal Park, festivities will begin at 5pm. Fitzgerald’s Independence Day Celebration Enjoy a fun-filled Independence Day Celebration on Friday, July 4, beginning at 4pm at Paulk Park in Fitzgerald. Celebrations Firecracker Special on Blue Ridge Scenic Railway The Firecracker Special will depart the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway Depot on Thursday, July 3, at 7pm for a four hour round trip. There will be a two hour lay-over in McCaysville where the train riders can enjoy the great Copper Basin Fireworks display. They are encouraged to take a lawn chair and sit outside the train to view the fireworks. For more information on the railway, see the article on page 12.
