BIOTECHNOLOGY ENTERPRISE AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Successful biotechnology enterprises require professionals who understand both the science and the complexities of product commercialization. This exciting master’s program is intended for biotechnology professionals who seek a career beyond the laboratory either creating a new biotech enterprise or working within an existing company.

Students will complete 10 graduate courses, including a final practicum course to gain real-world experience. Students may choose three electives across a broad range of courses, or they may choose a concentration in Bioscience Communications or Legal/ Regulatory Science.

CREDENTIALS AND PREREQUISITES

» Undergraduate degree in the life sciences or engineering with at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale

» One semester of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at the undergraduate or graduate level OR 410.303 Foundations of Bioscience

Madeline McCarthy Business Development Associate, Abzena Madeline McCarthy is currently a Business Development Associate at Abzena, a Cambridge (UK) based contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) with expertise in custom biologics. Based out of Abzena’s GMP manufacturing site in San Diego, she spends a majority of her time collaborating with industry and academic professionals to support the development and manufacture of recombinant proteins, antibodies, cell therapies

and vaccines for preclinical and clinical studies.

Being successful at her daily tasks, such as drafting scopes of work, proposals and determining accurate project-specific costs, requires a conceptual understanding of the biotech space; bridging science, business, legal, and regulatory aspects. She developed much of her interdisciplinary approach at Johns Hopkins University, where she obtained a Masters in Biotechnology Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (MBEE). She became interested in the MBEE program while involved in a side project, helping to generate a business plan around an earlystage device technology.
