MASTER OF SCIENCE IN

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) represent a technological breakthrough in organizing and displaying spatial information to promote better decision-making by scientists, public officials, and communities facing increasingly complex demands upon their available resources. The MS in Geographic Information Systems is structured to provide students with a sound, scientific basis for the uses of GIS in spatial data modeling, analysis, and visualization. Students will develop a substantive comprehension of spatial data structure, formats, and quality control imperatives. Offered entirely online, the program is a highly innovative and unique approach to

PREREQUISITES

GIS education, and teaches the latest trends in spatial data processing, analysis, and visualization using a multimedia delivery scheme. Students will gain invaluable experience in web-based GIS application development in a cloud-computing environment that furthers their understanding of software design, software lifecycle management, database security, and web architecture. Students will complete nine (9) courses, in addition to a Capstone project that demonstrates the student’s ability to apply a GIS to examine, model, and analyze a spatial project of their choosing.

Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited US college or university. » Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the latter half of undergraduate studies. Meeting the minimum GPA requirement does not guarantee admission. » One semester of undergraduate calculus and one semester of undergraduate statistics or demonstration of proficiency and familiarity with the elements of calculus and statistics through other quantitative method courses. » No GRE required.

Capstone The capstone is the culmination of the instruction and training a student receives in the MS in GIS program. In this course, the student selects a mentor, identifies a topic of interest, acquires the relevant data required for the study, develops a data model and/or analysis method, devises the visualization of the data as part of the data interpretation, and summarizes the study in a final report. » 430.800 - Capstone for Geographic Information Systems
