GLOBAL SECURITY STUDIES
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Non-state actors, rising powers, and hybrid wars in strategic areas pose complex challenges to American security. Such challenges are also opportunities for creating smart, effective security policy. The MA in Global Security Studies Program drives students to confront the policy complexities of the 21st century security environment and gives them the theoretical knowledge and policy tools to help shape our world. The Global Security Studies degree program rests on three pillars that provide a framework for analyzing these myriad challenges and

opportunities — military security, economic security, and energy and environmental security. Our students analyze military challenges, the intricacies of resource scarcity, and the security implications of energy dependence and economic interdependence. Johns Hopkins also offers a Certificate in Science Technology and International Security and a Certificate in Intelligence. Students can complete these five-course programs at a part-time or accelerated pace. We also offer a fifteen-course combined MA in Global Security Studies/Certificate in Intelligence.
Prospective students must hold a bachelor’s degree prior to enrolling in the MA in Global Security Studies. Our students come from diverse educational and professional backgrounds, ranging from those who have studied international relations, history, economics or science and work in national security fields to those who are looking to transition to the national security sector. The program admits students on a rolling basis. Prospective students are encouraged to submit their applications two months before the beginning of the semester in which they would like to start the program.

RESEARCH STUDY PROCESS
The research study process includes training in research methods & an intensive research study seminar. In the process of writing their research studies, students hone their research skills,
improve their analytical abilities, sharpen their writing and communication style, and become subject-matter experts in their chosen area.
