At Johnson & Wales University we believe that when students start their academic journey from a place of exploration and self-discovery, learning becomes more intuitive and fun. In fact, we find that when students have the freedom to explore their interests, they take ownership of their academic goals.

Historically higher than the national average, the career outcomes rate reflects the percentage of JWU graduates who secure full- or part-time employment, are enrolled/accepted in a program of study to continue their education, are performing voluntary service, or enlist in military service within six months of graduation.

mentors and academic advisors, students will be part of a community of likeminded people who are empowered to discover what they like and where they can excel. Undeclared students in our Explorations programs can try out different fields of study knowing that they’ll have the support they need. And by the end of their first year at JWU, having developed structured study plans to stay on track for graduation, they’ll be ready to move into their preferred major.

FINDING THE RIGHT FIT WITH
CUSTOMIZABLE DEGREES
STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM

There are several ways students can begin exploring different topics at Johnson & Wales. Each option provides unique opportunities for students to design their studies to fit their needs. Undeclared: University Explorations Offered through the College of Arts & Sciences, students in this program can take classes across the university — from health to design to media studies and psychology — so they can explore the different majors available at JWU and decide which program they will pursue at the end of their first year. In addition, they’ll also take core Arts & Sciences classes to stay on track to graduation.
Undeclared: Business Explorations Housed in the College of Business, this program allows students to start taking basic business and general studies courses as they explore program options. As students refine their interests, they’ll get a better sense of which industry areas they’d like to focus on when they declare a major at the end of their first year.
Interdisciplinary Studies: Design Your Own Major When students select the Interdisciplinary Studies: Design Your Own Major option they will work side by side with a faculty advisor to create a program that’s as unique as their interests. They can choose to combine two or three different majors, from any JWU college, to craft their own customized path. This major lets them explore life’s bigger questions, while at the same time allowing them to gain a broad set of skills employers are looking for.
JWU has some of the most passionate, dedicated leaders in academia. They are committed to helping our students develop their skills by sharing their insights and experiences to teach them how industries actually work. Their teaching methods set them apart and they contribute their know-how to develop innovative courses and degrees that directly reflect 21st-century needs. Some faculty members students might connect with include:

Liberal Studies This program gives students the ability to explore, in-depth, everything the College of Arts & Sciences has to offer. Liberal Studies combines the breadth of a liberal arts education with the professionally focused training for which JWU is known. Students can specialize in either Arts & Culture or Science & Society, and can round out their experience by pairing their degree with any minor available across the university.

“ This is a major that was made to help ambitious students like myself, who find themselves interested in studying from multiple areas. Being able to take aspects from existing majors and create my own curriculum makes me feel more in control of my education.” — Leah Ward ’23 Interdisciplinary Studies: Design Your Own Major student
