WINDOW GRAPHICS B R E AT H E N E W L I F E T O AXELROD MUSIC BUILDING Murals and artwork abound in Providence. When a music space needed updating, JWU came to the rescue. In a competition/class project, students reimagined the crumbling facade. Graphic design student Kristina Faiola ’22 won by combing both musical themes and Providence/Rhode Island landmarks. “I was really excited about it, because I was
actually working on the drawing and it was music related. I thought I could incorporate that into my design, so I showed it to Professor Tim Cox. He said I should go for it.” Faiola set on creating digital portraits of the legendary musicians David Bowie, Aretha Franklin, Prince and Freddie Mercury.

F A C U LT Y M E M B E R W I N S COMPETITION TO REDESIGN PROVIDENCE LANDMARK To Associate Professor Jonathan Harris, making a difference to improve the community matters. In May 2021, Harris’ passion for industrial design earned him, and a team from the Horsley Witten Group, a first-place win in a competition to save the historical Crook Point Bascule Bridge in Providence, which has been sitting unused and in an upright position since 1976. “At that point, I thought ‘why don’t we just look at alternatives for what we could do with the bridge.’ I live in that neighborhood, and it’s such a landmark for that part of the city and East Providence, that it seemed like a big loss.” Now that their design has been chosen as the winner, the City of Providence hopes to drum up support to preserve the bridge and revitalize the area.

TOBIAS SIMON ‘20
T U R N I N G A PA S S I O N F O R APPLIED FOOD SCIENCE INTO A CAREER During his senior year, Applied Food Science major Tobias Simon ’20 reverse-engineered a commercial product, Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ Sauce, to create what he called Sweet Baby Toby Barbecue Sauce. Little did he know, this was the start of a full-time career with McClancy, a food product innovation and manufacturing company in Charlotte.
“I ensure quality control in the production plant. We use salt meters, viscosity level, granulation, and moisture testing to test samples and products to make sure what’s coming in and out of the plant is consistent. Because of JWU, I already knew how to use the equipment, how to formulate and reverse engineer.”

LAUNCHING THE NEXT G E N E R AT I O N ’ S S P O R T S C A R E E R S After working in the sports industry for 15 years, Associate Professor Jeffrey Longo set his sights on teaching, wanting to play a part in launching the careers of the next generation. Now, he shares his success with JWU students in Charlotte who are interested in getting into the game of the sports industry. “They know they want to do something in sports, but they don’t really know what that means. I walk them through that journey and provide an awareness of what the different roles are. They learn about positions in community relations, marketing, sales, operations — all of those different areas that they’ve either never heard of or didn’t understand what they are.” But he doesn’t stop at JWU. Longo and Professor James Patrick Stack founded the nonprofit Sports Biz Camps, which helps connect high school students interested in sports to careers.
