At Johnson & Wales University, we believe that when students start their academic journey from a place of exploration and self-discovery, learning becomes more intuitive and fun. In fact, we find that when students have the freedom to explore their interests, they take ownership of their academic goals

NO MAJOR?

If your student is having trouble choosing a major, don’t worry — we’ve got you. There are several ways students can begin exploring different topics at Johnson & Wales. Each option provides unique opportunities for students to design their studies to fit their needs.

NO PROBLEM

Innovative, high-tech equipment makes classwork feel like play.

Culinary Science students explore their entrepreneurial side at JWU Sharkfest, a business pitch competition open to all majors.

Graphic Design students display their work in the Providence Campus design gallery.

Undeclared: Business Explorations

Offered through the College of Arts & Sciences, students in this program can take classes across the university — from health to design to media studies and psychology — so they can explore the different majors available at JWU and decide which program they will pursue at the end of their first year. In addition, they’ll also take core Arts & Sciences classes to stay on track to graduation.

Housed in the College of Business, this program allows students to start taking basic business and general studies courses as they explore program options. As students refine their interests, they’ll get a better sense of which industry areas they’d like to focus on when they declare a major at the end of their first year.

Interdisciplinary Studies: Design Your Own Major

“ We want students to know they are where they belong — which is in a college that allows them to explore and discover.” — Dean Michael Fein, Ph.D., College of Arts & Sciences

When students select this option, they will work side by side with a faculty advisor to create a program that’s as unique as their interests. They can choose to combine two or three different majors, from any JWU college, to craft their own customized path. Some examples students have already created include: Sustainable Baking, Food Marketing Communications, Sports Media, Justice Studies, Political Economy, and Creative Entrepreneurship.

Academic support is the biggest key to success in the classroom.

Liberal Studies This program gives students the ability to explore, in-depth, everything the College of Arts & Sciences has to offer. Liberal Studies combines the breadth of a liberal arts education with the professionally focused training for which JWU is known. Students can specialize in either Arts & Culture or Science & Society, and can round out their experience by pairing their degree with any minor available across the university.

“ This is a major that was made to help ambitious students like myself, who find themselves interested in studying from multiple areas. Being able to take aspects from existing majors and create my own curriculum makes me feel more in control of my education.” — Leah Ward ’23 Interdisciplinary Studies: Design Your Own Major student

Our faculty make the best mentors because most of them have spent decades working in their chosen industries. Your student will often work one-on-one with them to learn from their expertise and reach academic goals.
