Providence is one of the most vibrant college towns in the world and includes all the benefits of a large urban area. More than 30,000 college students live in the city. That means making new friends and expanding your network, on and off campus, will be effortless. Plus, our location near Boston and New York City makes bringing great events such as concerts, comedy shows and guest speakers to students on campus possible.

“At that point, I thought ‘why don’t we just look at alternatives for what we could do with the bridge.’ I live in that neighborhood, and it’s such a landmark for that part of the city and East Providence, that it seemed like a big loss.”

To Associate Professor Jonathan Harris, making a difference to improve the community matters. In May 2021, Harris’ passion for industrial design earned him, and a team from the Horsley Witten Group, a first-place win in a competition to save the historical Crook Point Bascule Bridge in Providence, which has been sitting unused and in an upright position since 1976.

LIVE In Providence, the “Creative Capital”, you’ll be within walking distance to endless activities. At your doorstep, you’ll find a vibrant and culturally diverse arts scene, full of professionals, leaders and innovators. Not to mention, Providence has a thriving food scene, and many of the city’s top restaurants were founded are staffed by our talented graduates.

“I ensure quality control in the production plant. We use salt meters, viscosity level, granulation, and moisture testing to test samples and products to make sure what’s coming in and out of the plant is consistent. Because of JWU, I already knew how to use the equipment, how to formulate and reverse engineer.”

After working in the sports industry for 15 years, Associate Professor Jeffrey Longo set his sights on teaching, wanting to play a part in launching the careers of the next generation. Now, he shares his success with JWU students in Charlotte who are interested in getting into the game of the sports industry.

OUR STUDENTS?

Each campus has a center that offers peer and professional tutoring, online tutoring, writing laboratories and study skills workshops.

Wildcat Learning Effectiveness in Action Program (LEAP)

We provide reasonable accommodations for students with learning disabilities, physical challenges and chronic medical conditions so they have the opportunity to succeed in their academic pursuits.

Hosted at JWU’s Providence Campus, Wildcat LEAP is a fee-based educational program designed to help students discover how they learn and to develop specific strategies to enhance their learning.

SFS helps students and their families finance higher education at JWU with help from a financial planning representative to guide them every step of the way.

SAS helps students stay on track throughout their time at JWU with academic planning, counselors, advisors and other offerings.

When you choose a path here, you’ll never have to walk it alone. Along the way, you’ll meet a lot of different people who are here to support you, inspire you, and work side-by-side with you to succeed.

When she decided to switch her major from Dietetics & Applied Nutrition to Culinary Science & Product Development, both Sweet and Tripp helped her gain confidence in her choice. “[Bridget Sweet] helped me through all these food safety topics that I like. She walked me through everything, and I’m so deeply appreciative,” says Gibson. “Professor Tripp opened my eyes to the product development world. Now, I’m using my knowledge from her course as I develop my own business and think about going wholesale.”

The mentorship Gibson received while at JWU prepared her to not only run her own business (The Dumpling Den), but to compete on national television in “Hell’s Kitchen: Young Guns” and learn from celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. “Both Johnson & Wales and ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ have opened my eyes in such a positive way,” she says. “You cannot please everyone, and the person that you need to like first is yourself.”

Every need is important, every person has a voice and everyone belongs here — including you.

In or out of the classroom, you’ll find that a mentor, a counselor, a tutor or a friend is always close by. You’ll also find resources to assist you academically, financially, physically, mentally and spiritually.

HOW CAN THIS COMMUNITY HELP YOU SUCCEED?

JWU faculty and staff are a crucial part of your college experience — and their mentorship can have a profound impact on your life. Throughout her time at JWU, Brynn Gibson ’20 had the support of mentors like JWU Providence’s Executive Director of Food Safety Bridget Sweet, Associate Professor Lynn Tripp, and Instructor Steven Johansson. “They really understood that to teach meant you had to encourage the student and make them want to learn,” says Gibson. “And those three people made me want to learn.”
