Congratulations on your acceptance to JWU!
I am Dr. Mary Meixell, dean of the College of Business, and I am so pleased to be the first to welcome you to the college and to Johnson & Wales University.
You should feel very proud of being accepted to JWU; it is an exciting accomplishment! When you join our community next fall, you will feel from the very first day that you belong. JWU’s diverse student body is filled with people who enjoy getting involved and building connections through hands-on learning in the classroom as well as activities and clubs around campus and in the greater community. I encourage you to get involved, too — it’s the best way to make new friends and get the most out of your college experience.
You’re joining ambitious business students who are buying and selling stocks for our student-managed Wildcat Investment Value Fund, competing with our award-winning ADTEAM, traveling with our faculty to learn about fashion and retail or learning how to do it all as an entrepreneur in our very own JWU Sharkfest pitch competition. As you discover all the experiences that await you here, you’ll know you made the right choice in coming to JWU.
I am confident this college — and JWU — will make you feel at home, and I look forward to welcoming you to campus and to our community.
Sincerely,
Mary J. Meixell, Ph.D.

JWU’s ADTEAM has a legacy of excellence when it comes to creating a winning advertising campaign. Entrepreneurial-minded students can pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges at the annual JWU Sharkfest competition. Winners receive a cash prize to fund their new business venture!
Accounting and finance students manage the Wildcat Investment Value Fund, a portion of JWU’s endowment, to learn how to manage a real portfolio, research investments and analyze the stock market.
Each year, Fashion Merchandising & Retail students head to New York City to tour fashion organizations in Manhattan.
The Larry Friedman Entrepreneurship Center has been revamped with input from a team of students to offer new and improved resources, training, programming and mentoring opportunities.

PROFESSORS WHO OPEN NEW DOORS
A great mentor is easy to find at JWU — in addition to your assigned faculty mentor, you’ll soon discover that every professor is eager to help you find your passion, connect you with opportunities and offer guidance when you need it. With our small class sizes, it will be easy for you to build a strong connection with your professors in and out of the classroom.
You’ll hear this word a lot entrepreneurship / än-trə-p(r)ə-ˈnər-ˌship/ noun
Using your innovation, skills, and vision to pursue the venture of creating, managing or growing your own business; accepting the risks of being a business pioneer.
Ex. “JWU embodies the spirit of entrepreneurship by encouraging students to take on new challenges and develop their own business ideas, which they can pitch at JWU Sharkfest each year.”
SPACES THAT CHALLENGE THE DEFINITION OF CLASSROOM
JWU’s lab spaces and facilities are not your traditional classrooms. They are designed to fuel your curiosity and professional development by simulating real-world environments and offering cutting-edge technology and equipment. Though every space on our campus is available to students in every college, you’ll often find your business peers (or yourself!) in these areas.
I chose JWU because I’m interested in learning through real-world scenarios and being taught by experienced industry professionals to gain a realistic understanding of the sales/marketing industry.”

Welcome to Johnson & Wales University — you’re officially a Wildcat!
Congratulations on your acceptance to Johnson & Wales University! You should be proud of what you’ve accomplished already and excited for what is to come! My name is Rylin, and I’m a senior majoring in finance. I want to take a moment to highlight some of the best parts of an education at JWU and give you some tips for success during this next chapter of your life.
In the College of Business, you will have countless opportunities to gain real world experience while you are still a student through Directed Experiential Education (DEE) courses and internships. For the past two years, I have participated in the Wildcat Investment Value Fund (WIVF), a student-led mutual fund that manages close to $300,000 of JWU’s endowment fund. As you can imagine, not many undergraduates can put that on their résumé. Such opportunities for invaluable work experience while surrounded by like-minded students are abundant at JWU — taking full advantage of opportunities like these is the best way you can prepare yourself for life after college.
On the other hand, JWU is more than a place for you to learn — it is a place for you to grow. When you arrive at JWU next year, there is no doubt you will feel overwhelmed. But remember, everyone else will be in the same situation as you. It’s important that you find your place in the JWU community early on, and you will be encouraged to get involved right from the start. With a myriad of student involvement initiatives including NCAA and intramural sports, clubs and student organizations, there is something for everyone here. Use your time at JWU as a period of self-discovery. Get involved, try new things, cram your schedule full of events and do not limit yourself. What you do outside of the classroom is just as important as what you do in class.
If I can share one piece of advice, it’s this: Don’t get to the end of your time at JWU with regrets. I have been where you are right now, and I know that graduating college feels like a lifetime away, but I can tell you that it will go by in a flash. You do not want to look back and wish you had been more involved on campus, built better rapport with your professors or pursued more opportunities to enhance your education. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way and enjoy yourself in the process. That is the simple recipe for success here at JWU and beyond.
Congratulations, again, on your acceptance into the College of Business at Johnson & Wales University. I wish you the best of luck as you prepare for college life next year!
Sincerely,
Rylin Fowler ’24
When you begin classes, you’ll quickly discover that great emphasis is placed on the practical applications of your coursework. Here at JWU, you’ll do much more than read from a textbook; you’ll be expected to synthesize your knowledge to make the same types of decisions that business leaders make in the real world.”
