Congratulations on your acceptance to JWU!
I am Dr. Mary Meixell, dean of the College of Business, and I am so pleased to be the first to welcome you to the college and to Johnson & Wales University.
You should feel very proud of being accepted to JWU; it is an exciting accomplishment! When you join our community next fall, you will feel from the very first day that you belong. JWU’s diverse student body is filled with people who enjoy getting involved and building connections through hands-on learning in the classroom as well as activities and clubs around campus and in the greater community. I encourage you to get involved, too — it’s the best way to make new friends and get the most out of your college experience.
You’re joining ambitious business students who are mastering the fast-paced world of accounting and finance, traveling with our faculty to learn about fashion and retail or learning how to do it all as an entrepreneur in our very own JWU Sharkfest pitch competition. As you discover all the experiences that await you here, you’ll know you made the right choice in coming to JWU.
I am confident this college — and JWU — will make you feel at home, and I look forward to welcoming you to campus and to our community.
Sincerely,
Mary J. Meixell, Ph.D.

SPACES THAT CHALLENGE THE DEFINITION OF CLASSROOM
JWU’s lab spaces and facilities are not your traditional classrooms. They are designed to fuel your curiosity and professional development by simulating real-world environments and offering cutting-edge technology and equipment. Though every space on our campus is available to students in every college, you’ll often find your business peers (or yourself!) in these areas.
I don’t think that there’s a professor I’ve had since my first year here that I don’t walk by still, to this day, and say ‘hi’ to. My professors know me. They know my face. They know my name, and that’s meant a lot.”

Welcome to Johnson & Wales University! We’re excited to have you join our community.
My name is Yen Tran and I’m a senior majoring in corporate accounting & financial analysis and minoring in economics. At JWU, I have found myself another family and many opportunities guiding me to my career. JWU has provided me with a high-quality education, hands-on learning and networking opportunities with local and corporate representatives.
You’ll get to learn from experienced professors in the College of Business who are all seasoned professionals in their industries and will pass on their knowledge and experience to you. Their goal is to prepare students for successful careers, and they will go above and beyond to guide you down a path of success.
One of the opportunities that I have received at JWU is being a member of the Institution of Management Accountants’ Charlotte Chapter. I attended networking events with representatives from regional companies and firms, giving me insight into future career paths. Each fall, students like me can also attend Student Leader Conferences, where students learn more about accountancy, expand their networks and have a chance to land an internship. Some of the companies I spoke with included Whirlpool, Cunnings, the FDIC, the IRS and even the CIA. All these companies are seeking the most talented juniors and seniors in college.
Thanks to the experiential education advisors at JWU, I connected with a campus recruiter who assisted me in landing my first internship at an accounting firm called Aprio. It was an amazing experience where I worked and learned about the taxation of international manufacturing technology, and I was even offered a fulltime position at the end of the internship. Even though I didn’t accept the offer because I will be pursuing my master’s degree after I graduate, it was exciting to know that what I’ve learned at JWU and the experiences I’ve had here will qualify me for great job opportunities.
The campus also strives to get students involved with events every week that are hosted by and for our students. Students can engage with each other, build new connections and create lasting friendships. JWU also provides outings for students to attend sports games, see theater productions and enjoy the arts scene of Charlotte. Overall, JWU creates opportunities for students to expand their knowledge and create a strong future.
The sky is the limit, so be proactive, encourage yourself to have new experiences and take advantage of all opportunities available here at JWU!
Sincerely,
Yen Tran ’23
