THRIVE AT JWU

Welcome to the College of Engineering & Design at Johnson & Wales University!

As dean of the college, I am proud of our storied tradition of providing hands-on, practical experiences in engineering, computer science, cybersecurity, design and digital marketing & social media. Our engaging and diverse programs will prepare you to become a well-rounded, self-motivated professional who understands the importance of life-long learning for continued success in your area of expertise.

I am privileged to lead a brilliant and caring team of faculty and staff who are committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, professional development, service and mentorship. A unique strength of our college and university is providing an ecosystem of high-impact practices that bring together people with different abilities, experiences and personalities to enhance your experience and enrich our community of learners.

Our industries are faced with many new challenges, such as artificial intelligence (AI), supply chain disruptors, sustainability, cloud computing and more. However, I see these challenges as opportunities to engage our students. We’re preparing our graduates to be nimble thinkers and creative innovators, providing résumé-worthy opportunities that will prepare you for jobs that don’t even exist yet. I hope you join our legacy.

Welcome to JWU, Wildcat!

A COLLEGE THAT UNLOCKS YOUR POTENTIAL

Tomorrow’s greatest creations are being developed today in the College of Engineering & Design. Students are engineering the future of medicine, computer technology and electronics. Some are designing computer programs, configuring websites or developing the visual identities of brands. Others are learning how to protect the world from cyber threats and identity theft, or how to build a digital marketing strategy that will help a business thrive.

In this college, you’ll discover a passion for changing the world by solving problems through design, strategy and innovation.

Become a graphic designer, electrical engineer, software developer, social media manager, or IT specialist — you can put yourself on any path with what you’ll learn here.

GO FORTH AND INNOVATE

The REVEAL Senior Design Showcase allows Graphic Design and Product Design seniors to display their portfolios and final projects in the Bowen Gallery each year.

The CyberPaw Competition, a capture-the-flag style competition to test students’ hacking and security skills, was created by Cyber Threat Intelligence & Defense students Jordan Limor ’24, Andrew Bugera ’24 and Christopher Lorme ’24.

Abram Kempner ’26 had his designs featured at the Boston Convention Center as part of a Graphic Design internship.

Product Design students in the Ethical Design class often collaborate with our Occupational Therapy program to design specialized products for people with physical disabilities as part of their coursework.

Education.

The professors in the College of Engineering & Design always have your best interests in mind. No matter the time of day, they are always willing to help you. Their experience in the industry makes them excellent teachers and mentors, and I’m so grateful to be able to learn from them.”

PROFESSORS WHO OPEN NEW DOORS

A great mentor is easy to find at JWU — in addition to your assigned faculty mentor, you’ll soon discover that every professor is eager to help you find your passion, connect you with opportunities and offer guidance when you need it. With our small class sizes, it will be easy for you to build a strong connection with your professors in and out of the classroom.

You’ll hear this word a lot innovation /ˌinəˈvāSH(ə)n/ noun

Your own revolutionary idea, product, design, method or technique that breaks with tradition and allows you to create new value or improvement.

Ex.: “The directional signage JWU students recently designed for the Bowen Center was an innovation that looks great and will help people find their way around the building.”

SPACES THAT CHALLENGE THE DEFINITION OF CLASSROOM

JWU’s lab spaces and facilities are not your traditional classrooms. They are designed to fuel your curiosity and professional development by simulating real-world environments and offering cutting-edge technology and equipment. Though every space on our campus is available to students in every college, you’ll often find your engineering and design peers (or yourself!) in these areas.

What really distinguishes JWU from other universities is that our Cybersecurity Lab is designated as a National Security Agency (NSA) Center of Academic Excellence. That designation assures me that what I’m learning and doing here can really translate.”

Welcome to JWU — you’re about to embark on the best four years of your academic career!

My name is Ally, and I am a senior majoring in graphic design. Whether you’re feeling nervous about the big changes or you’re ready to dive in, my advice is to embrace your exciting new journey.

I chose JWU because of the amazing programs, mentors, resources and community we have here. I’ve also loved living in the city and experiencing all that it has to offer. The professors care deeply about the success of their students and the programs are designed to give you a competitive edge as you join your desired industry.

If I could provide you with any advice, it would be to form relationships with your peers and your professors. Having a strong academic support system will help you to thrive and succeed. Take advantage of the Innovation Lab — one of the coolest spaces at JWU — with the latest fabrication equipment, such as 3D printers and laser engravers. I would also advise that you take advantage of all the opportunities given to you. Step out of your comfort zone because that is where you will grow.

I wish you the very best on your journey! I am confident that you will not only find success but will have a blast achieving it!

Sincerely,

My favorite space in the College of Engineering & Design is the John J. Bowen Center, where you’ll take many of your major classes. Around the city and campus, I loved going to sporting events, seeing Providence Water Fire, taking a mural walk or just hanging out in Gaebe Commons.”
