ARUNDEL&
Arundel captures the essence of heritage, urban chic and country pursuits, all within a stone’s throw of London. Experience this market town and you will discover more than you’d expect.
CHICHESTER
Arundel is a small town, with a stable population of about 3,000. It's pretty high street tumbles down the hill from the castle ending at the River Arun and broad wet meadows stretching beyond.
There is an assortment of antique shops, restaurants, even a shop specializing in walking sticks, and the venerable Norfolk Arms Hotel with its arched entrance for stagecoaches. Kim’s Bookstore crams 25,000 second-hand and antiquarian volumes higgledy-piggledy into three narrow floors.
Of course, the place to start is that castle. Arundel Castle still belongs to the Duke of Norfolk, senior peer of England and Earl Marshall of the kingdom.
It has been lived in by that first Earl and his descendants for some 900 years. The keep is the oldest part of the castle. That’s the part where work began in 1067.
The castle’s strategic location allowed it command of the River Arun valley and the southern escarpment of the Downs. From the battlements, gorgeous views stretch over the valley along the river toward Littlehampton.
One of the most charming and stylish cities on the South Coast, the historic cathedral city of Chichester combines all the attractions of a thriving urban centre with the remains of Roman streets, walls and gateways. A must visit delight of West Sussex.
ACCOMMODATION
In the heart of Arundel's conservation area is the Norfolk Arms Hotel, a former Georgian coaching inn, completed in 1780. Unspoilt, the hotel combines the period features of the Georgian era with the requirements of today's visitors. Within the hotel are log fires, bars serving real ales and for entertaining on a greater scale, the magnificent mirrored ballroom.
Most of our rooms, which vary in size and character, are situated in the main house, whilst ground floor rooms are available in our courtyard. The stunning sight of Arundel Castle, the ancestral home to the Dukes of Norfolk for over 800 years, dominates the historic market town, which through the ages has developed into a small but unique town, from its cobbled streets, specialist shops and beautiful Georgian architecture, to the Gothic Cathedral. Close by are the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, the great estates of Goodwood and Petworth, horse racing at Fontwell, the Roman ruins at Fishbourne, historic Portsmouth and the wonderful Brighton Pavilion. The Hotel offers Free Wifi ! Thank you. Please note the Hotel does not have a lift but does have a number of ground floor rooms available.
