The morning car ride is where Shanna and I conduct our board meetings and generally sort out life’s questions.

Recently, in the days before this column was due, I lamented about the lack of inspirational spark usually required to produce such things.

“Why don’t you write about how you became a dog person,” she asked. And just like that, I had a topic.

I’m certainly not a dog person. When compared to the average person, though, I probably qualify.

Dogs are one of the things that separate me from being a (completely) bitter and jaded old journalist. They offer daily doses of cuteness and affection that nurture the spirit and fill the heart.

That’s why we’re excited to share a few cute pictures of dogs (and other animals) in this issue. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

a Matter of Principle: The Naked Tru T h

May is “Honesty Month” according to Johnston County Public School’s character education calendar. So, what is the proper response to this fact? Will there be a parade? Shall we dress in certain colors? Should we gather with loved ones for a feast in honor of honesty? Not a bad idea!

But, seriously, having a whole month set aside for a character trait denotes a level of importance that should go beyond the walls of the schools. What better cause to stand in solidarity with than our own community’s core values?

So, in honor of honesty, let us consider the wisdom of an old fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson called “The Emperor’s

New Clothes.” This is a clever satire that manages to deal with honesty on the levels of self-deception, social conformity and the courage to speak the truth despite social pressures.

Basically, the emperor, who is obsessed with having the finest clothes, hires two swindlers who promise to weave him some royal finery from a magical fabric that only the wise can see. In reality, of course, they con him and create nothing.

Instead of admitting to seeing no clothes when the rascals unveil “them,” the emperor pretends to admire them, afraid to appear foolish and unfit for his office. The emperor's courtiers and subjects go along with the illusion of the new clothes because they believe everyone else sees them, leading to a collective delusion.

The jig is up when a young child calls out during the grand procession that the emperor is naked, revealing the folly of the ruler’s vanity and the power of honesty.

Of all things, to have the very ruler of the land so weak in character as to be childishly self-obsessed and intellectually dishonest! Shouldn’t a true leader exhibit basic virtues such as courage, fairness and honesty? Indeed, the emperor was not fit for his office. The swindlers already had him pegged!

And all the subjects and courtiers were just as flawed. But exactly where did they go wrong? Did they actually believe the clothes did exist, but that they were not wise enough to see them, so they pretended otherwise? Or did they see through the ruse but feared reprisals if they scoffed?

If the first, they were committing the logical fallacy of the appeal to consensus:

“I don’t see it, but most do, so I guess the majority must be right!” If the second, they were unconvinced but lacked the courage to buck popular opinion.

But what about that kid who refused to keep his mouth shut? He alone realized that if you are really wise, you will call a spade a spade, even if everybody around you says it is a club or a diamond. It is wise and courageous to be honest! Honest with yourself and others. I’d say they should have fired the foolish emperor and put the boy on the throne instead!

Latinos activate Joco announces eighth-annual JoCo Latino Festival in

SELMA — Latinos Activate JOCO announces the eighth-annual JOCO Latino Festival, a vibrant celebration of Latino culture and community engagement. The festival is scheduled for Sunday, May 12, from 1-6 p.m.

This year's festival will be prominently situated along Raiford and Waddell streets, with comprehensive road closures to ensure a safe and festive atmosphere for all attendees. Specifically, the closures will be effective from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on festival day. These closures will facilitate the placement of an array of food trucks along Waddell

Street, showcasing diverse Latino culinary offerings. To accommodate festival-goers, ample parking options will be available throughout the town.

The festival will also feature vendor stalls along Raiford Street, showcasing a variety of goods and services and live entertainment at the intersection of S. Raiford and Railroad streets, featuring musical and dance performances celebrating Latino heritage.

Benny is a 13 year old Boxer that was the runt of his litter, however he has outlived all of his siblings and is living his best life. His inquisitive nature leads him into all kinds of mischief as most boxers do. His unique form of "Boxer English" has us constantly wondering, "what is he up to?" Benny was originally named Bentley when we rescued him at 2 years of age. It didn't take long for us to realize that the sophistication associated with the name "Bentley" did not correlate with the activities he portrayed. One could say, instead of champagne, we got muscadine wine. He will always be our baby!

Rescue pets are the best pets, or at least they are at Randy and Shanna's. Van Gogh lost an ear as a puppy (hence the name) and was too cute not to adopt a few years ago. He's little, but barks and acts like a much larger dog. Lyla, on the other hand, was a sickly puppy who was suffering from anemia, among other things. She's the sweetest dog who's always ready for a hug, cuddle or snuggle.

We adopted Floki at 10 months old from a Labrador rescue group. Imagine our surprise when we submitted his DNA for testing, just for fun, and discovered he's not a lab at all - he's our big "super mutt," with a mixture of Rottweiler, Boxer, German Shepard and a bunch of other breeds. His name comes from a favorite character from the show "Vikings." He just turned 6 years old and makes us all laugh every day with his silly antics.

We rescued Jewel (left) at 10 weeks (now 10 years) and Moose we found playing on the side of the road a few months ago. We have no idea how old he is, but he has lots of energy and he has fit right in with the family. Both of these dogs fill the void of my wife wanting more kids. As long as the void is filled, I am happy. Both are great family dogs.

owner: Paul Robinson about our pet: Boone is our resident emotional support animal for all clients, employees, mailmen, delivery people, passersby on the street and pretty much anyone in downtown clayton that needs a little pick-me-up, friend or confidant. He works hard, plays hard especially if you have a ball to throw and cleans up pretty well too when he dons one of his infamous bowties. Boone is about 8 years old. i got him in august 2017, from Love Mutts Rescue in Raleigh. He was a foster fail. they estimated him to be about a year old at that time. i had him for about a week and was supposed to take him to his first adoption event.

But most of my clients have just gone through one of the most traumatic events of their lives (injury, car accident, loss of employment, etc.) and it can be very intimidating speaking with an attorney anyway. Boone, along with his big sister cassidy, help my clients feel comfortable. so, i adopted him and he’s been with me ever since. His name is a homage to my dad, who had passed away a couple weeks before i got Boone. My dad was a big american frontier history buff and i came across the name “Boone” as was trying to think of a name for him.

owner: Loretta Byrd about our pet: Leo was named for my Daddy, Leonard. While not officially trained to be a service dog, he is by my disabled husband’s side all day. Leo is a Malti shu. Leo loves the music on the tv station PBs His favorite show is “antique Road show.” When the intro music comes on, he will hold his head up and howl. it appears he is singing to the music. as with most dog owners, Leo is loved beyond measure and he is a huge part of our family.

owner: Michell Boyette about our pet: My sweet Wrigley is 13 years old. i’ve had him ever since he was born, and he has been a lifesaver and the greatest friend through everything ’ve been through the past 13 years. He used to be playful and energetic, but now he’s spunky, kinda grumpy, loves treats, sleeps the day away and loves all the pets he can get! We truly don’t deserve a dog’s love and don’t know what i’d do without him!

owner: vicki vogel about our pet: Manny is my first French bull dog, and my one and only male dog. He is a purebred frenchie, and has all the qualities and characteristics of a French Bull Dog. Phoebe is our rescue Frenchie. she was a hot mess when we adopted her, but she is thriving now. she and Manny are besties and truly love one another.

pet: Hank age: 5 months owner: nicole Kincaid about our pet: Hank is only about 5 months old and was picked up as a stray on the streets of Raleigh. He had most likely spent a good part of his beginning of his life in a crate and now he is living his best life. He is the biggest goofball and is silly all the time and is adored by our whole family

pet: cam age: 5 owner: tiffany schiller about our pet: cam (the yellow lab) came to me as a foster from the Darlington county Humane society in 2021. a year before considering fostering, i lost one of my other pups and the brindle in the picture with cam kept looking for her sister. so i started fostering and had three more before cam came to me. He does flyball, Fastcat and is a therapy dog. Finding your next fur baby is amazing, but when they find you, there are no words for it.

owner: Brenda stroud about our pets: this is my female Husky, sky. she has been with my husband and i for about 7 months now. she has been a true blessing to us both, but especially for me. have been going through some depression the last few years and since getting this little lady so much of that has lifted. she makes me laugh, she also can be so stubborn at times, but i truly believe that this little angel is my own personal gift from God.

owner: Briana Mullen about our pet: Dolly is a Great Pyrenees that rescued from the animal shelter in December. she was so timid of many things including the outdoors and it was obvious she had never been trained to do anything. i took on a big responsibility having to teach a three-year-old dog eveRYtHinG that you would teach a puppy, but with lots of patience and repetition she has become the best dog!

He is definitely both of those to me! after living his first year and a half outside, he is now living his best life in our home with his doggie sister callie.

Selecting a dog to bring into your home is a choice with lasting consequences, so it’s not one that should be taken lightly.

“Dog ownership is a 10-15 year relationship commitment,” said Shane Gentry, owner of Sally Said So Professional Dog Training.

“Imagine being in the wrong relationship with a person for that long! Not fun.”

That’s why Sally Said So offers puppy consultations, so you know exactly what you’re getting into before adopting or purchasing a pet.

“What makes the best adoption is doing the consult and having a trainer do a temperament test with the dog before adoption,” Gentry said.

Making sure the energy level of the dog matches up with the amount of activity in your household is a major consideration.

We’ll ensure your breeder has quality, ethically bred animals. We want to be sure you aren’t supporting a puppy mill, as they are always quantity over quality,” Gentry said.

When it comes to rescuing a dog, Sally Said So takes more of a trial and error approach to finding the right fit.

“We connect you with a puppy and take you and any other pets in the home for a meet-and-greet. That way, we’ll have an idea of its temperament and how well it will fit in before committing,” he said.

“Imagine you’re a triathlon athlete and you have a Basset Hound or conversely you’re a couch potato and you have a Husky,” he said. “It will be very difficult for both to be happy and to no surprise, it’s why the shelters are full of great dogs that just didn’t fit someone’s lifestyle.”

It starts with a whole family interview.

“We want to meet you, your partner, your kids, the cat — anyone who will be a significant part of this puppy’s life,” Gentry said.

By the end of the interview, your trainer will have a list of two or three breeds that would fit well with your family.

Using their vast knowledge and network of breeders and rescue organizations, they then begin searching for the perfect dog for you.

Once a match is found, it’s important to start the training process right away. “Moving forward with training after adoption is imperative to work through the decompression period which can last up to 90 days,” Gentry said.

Proper training can ensure that you and your new pet will have a long and happy relationship.

why IS my dog ItChINg?

This is a question we are asked several times a day, especially over the last 4-8 weeks. You may even have a dog that’s itching — as a dog-dad of five furballs myself, I can tell you it’s not fun watching your dog spend the afternoon (or afternoons) scratching an itch that just won’t go away.

Sound familiar?

Here’s a few tips on how to narrowdown what could be making your dog itch.

Is your dog itching year-round, or just certain times of the year? This is probably the best question to answer first. If your dog seems to be itching every day of the year regardless of the season — I would start looking at something your dog is ingesting and/ or coming into contact with daily. This could be food, treats, certain grass and seed pollens, your detergent and even that faux-stainless steel (sometimes other types too) water/food bowl.

Hint: Try an LID (Limited Ingredient Diet) food, or a food with a different protein from a different manufacturer. Change your dog’s bowl for a week to see if the redness disappears around his mouth. Does your dog go to the neighbor’s kitty litter box each morning?

Guess what? That could be the culprit as well!

However, if your dog is only itchy or has dry skin at certain types of the year (for us in NC, this often means when you turn your home’s heat to AC, and AC to heat) there is a high likelihood that seasonal allergies are the problem. Sometimes environmental allergies just can’t be avoided. I actually replanted my entire yard with a different grass seed in hopes of helping one of my dogs, but it didn’t help. This is when it’s time to call her veterinarian and get a Cytopoint shot. Maybe your dog has dry skin? This time of year, almost every dog that comes into Just Dog People has dry skin.

You can especially notice this on brown/ black dogs, and short-haired dogs as well.

What do we recommend? Try a warm bath, perhaps with an aloe-based shampoo along with a conditioner. For dogs, the conditioner isn’t just to make their hair shiny, it’s also to condition their skin. This is a great way to alleviate some forms of itching!

Sometimes it’s all in the genes and their first 8-12 weeks of life. Over the last nine years or so I’ve come to notice a common theme in dogs with allergies and weak bellies: Momma wasn’t able to deliver the puppy’s first round of ‘inoculations’ (mom’s milk).

While not scientific, I would estimate 95 out of 100 dogs who cross my path (as a dog nutrition consultant) have had an unfortunate start to life.

Often these dogs are raised without their mother or taken from their mother too soon. In fact, one of my five was the runt of her large litter (seven.) Bea was not able to get the same access to mom as the other puppies in her litter, and although we can’t prove this — we believe that her having thyroid issues could be connected.

For these dogs, symptoms often appear as early as 12 weeks, while I would say most dogs that I see in the store for consultations are six to nine months old.

Tip: These puppies need strong probiotics — we often suggest petparents take home a $9 bottle of fermented goat’s milk to “test” our theory. Within about 7-10 days, mom and dad often see results such as: less gas, firm stool, increased energy and “playfulness” and possibly heightened energy to eat their food.

As always there are many considerations that go into diagnosing and helping a dog — always consult with your veterinarian if you think something is off about your dog.

I notice my own children and how fast the years of their youth are ying by. I notice my parents and the fact that they are aging faster than ever.

And so I’ve been contemplating a lot lately about aging and the value in capturing each day, each week or month and trying to make the very most of it. Regardless of your belief about the a erlife, we really only have this life to live as we know it.

It’s why in this past year I have doubled down on my personal boundaries and really standing up for my values and beliefs. I’m making strides to create a life I love living, not just trying to skirt through.

Some of you might be at a crossroads in your own life or reaching a milestone age. Maybe you’re considering making changes to create a life you really love living. I want to remind you that you have JUST THIS ONE LIFE to live. I don’t want to live with regrets, and I don’t want you to either.

Life is precious and it’s eeting. Whatever choices, changes or creations you need to make to live this one life of yours to the fullest, I hope you feel empowered on this day and in this year, to do those things for yourself!

It really is true … you only live once. YOLO!

Cleveland toppled Midway, 7-4, in the championship game of the Johnston County Easter Invitational at South Johnston during Spring Break to win its third straight tournament title and 11th consecutive game in the event dating back to a first-round loss to Bunn in 2019.

“The championship game was a hard-fought game from both teams,” head coach Jamie Lee said. “Timely hitting was the key to scoring our runs and starting pitcher Jack Dalton made big pitches on the mound when he needed to.”

Dalton got the win, working 4.2 innings while allowing one earned run on a hit and striking out four. Will Hicks provided much of the run support, homering twice and driving in three. Brooks Moore added an RBI

and two hits while Zalin Ingram added a two-run double for the Rams (11-4)
