Treadway Toomey Auctions is honored to offer a selection of items from the Robert E. “Butch” McGuire Collection on March 4th at John Toomey Gallery, located in Oak Park, IL. It will be 11 years this May since Butch passed away at the age of 76, but his name through the eponymous saloon, Butch McGuire’s at 20 West Division Street in Chicago, continues to live on. Much of Butch’s collection will continue on display at the landmark bar, but the items in this auction are being retired from their rotation. “This will be an opportunity for lovers of the Butch McGuire legacy, in Chicago and beyond, to own a piece of Chicago history,” said John Walcher, who is heading the sale with Joe Stanfield, both of John Toomey Gallery. There are more than 200 lots in the auction, titled The Butch McGuire’s Collection: Selected Property from the Estate of Robert E. “Butch” McGuire and the Iconic Chicago Saloon. The collection’s diverse offerings include: framed art, prints and posters, nautical and maritime objects, antique English pub signs, breweriana and advertising mirrors, steins and mugs, Waterford crystal, carved wood elements and architectural hardware, sports memorabilia, and more. “It doesn’t take long to notice Butch McGuire’s is not your average bar and has a charm to it that most bars never achieve,” Walcher stated. “Butch was an avid and savvy collector of everything bar or nautical related and decorated his bar extensively.” On his travels to Europe, Butch would acquire antique pub signs and decorations to bring back to Chicago. He bid at auctions and purchased items from dealers all over the country. Patrons of the bar included prominent Chicago artists LeRoy Neiman, Bill Olendorf, George Velich, and others. Joe Stanfield learned and recalled, “A great part of the history is that these artists became good friends with Butch and would trade their art for drinks, to settle a tab.” Butch McGuire was born on Chicago’s South Side and graduated from the University of Michigan. He founded Butch McGuire’s Saloon in 1961, after borrowing $1,500 from his mother. The bar, popular since its opening, has over the years become a Chicago institution. Robert “Bobby” McGuire, Butch’s son, carries on the tradition and now runs the 56-year-old establishment and oversees the transitions of the items on display: from the varietal bar and nautical decor from years past, to the green spectacle that is St. Patrick’s Day, to the much anticipated Christmas decorations with excessive lights and fully functional trains throughout the saloon. Due to the volume of Butch McGuire’s collection, Bobby has decided to permanently retire many items from the rotation and offer them for sale at auction.

TERMS & CONDITIONS The Auction: The auction is open to the public and there is no admission fee or obligation to bid. The auctioneer introduces the objects for sale – known as “lots” – in numerical order as listed in the catalog. Treadway Toomey Auctions acts as agent on behalf of the seller and does not permit the seller to bid on his or her own property. Estimates/Reserves: The price estimates that appear at the end of each lot description are simply approximations, reflecting the range in which the price may fall. Some items are subject to a reserve, the price below which an item cannot be sold. In most instances, the reserve is less than the low estimate. Bidding in Person: If you would like to bid in person, you must register for a “paddle” upon arriving at the auction. The paddle is numbered so as to identify you to the auctioneer. To register, you will need a form of photo identification, such as a driver’s license, passport or government-issued identification. You also will be asked for your address, telephone number and e-mail address. If you are bidding for someone else, you will have to provide authorization from that person in order to bid on their behalf. Issuance of a bid paddle is in the auction house’s sole discretion. All lots sold will be invoiced to the name and address in which the paddle has been registered. Absentee Bids, Telephone Bids and Internet Bids: If you are not able to attend the auction in person, you may bid over the telephone during the sale, leave bids (“absentee bids”), which will be executed for you by one of our representatives, making every effort to purchase the item for as little as possible without exceeding your limit, or bid via the Internet (see our website for instructions on how to bid at our auction via the Internet). PLEASE NOTE: Treadway Toomey Auctions offers the absentee bid service as a convenience to its clients who are unable to attend the auction and is not responsible for error or failure to execute bids. Should you wish to participate by telephone or by leaving absentee bids, you must complete and submit an Absentee/Telephone Bid Form, which is included in the catalog and also is available on the auction website and at the auction house, or contact us as indicated below. - Telephone Bidding: Please make arrangements for telephone bidding as early as possible, as there are a limited number of telephone lines available. Please make arrangements for telephone bidding no later than 5:00 p.m. (CDT) on the day prior to a sale. Please note that telephone bidding is generally reserved for items estimated at greater than $500. - Absentee Bidding: Please provide absentee bids as early as possible. It is important that these bids are provided in the correct increments. Should identical absentee bids come in, the first bid received will be honored. Absentee bidders have the same chance of being successful as a telephone or in-person bidder; the successful bidder is determined at the auctioneer’s discretion. It is important that absentee bids are submitted prior to 5:00 p.m. (CDT) on the day prior to a sale, as execution cannot be guaranteed after that time. Please call us If you wish to confirm that your bids have been received. Buyer’s Premium: A buyer’s premium will be added to the hammer price and is payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price for each lot purchased. The buyer’s premium for telephone, absentee, and floor bidders is: 25% of the hammer price up to and including $100,000; 20% of any amount in excess of $100,000 up to and including $1,000,000; and 15% of any amount in excess of $1,000,000. The buyer’s premium for Internet bidders (LiveAuctioneers.com or Invaluable.com) is: 30% of the hammer price up to and including $100,000; 25% of any amount in excess of $100,000 up to and including $1,000,000; and 20% of any amount in excess of $1,000,000.
