Who has been there, done that? John Twigg, that's who. Burly John started life in New Zealand, but he soon found that he needed more room to spread his considerable talents. He has such broad shoulders and wide horizons that he just had to find somewhere challenging to live and work. Before travelling to Asia, Saatchi & Saatchi was the fastest growing advertising agency in the region. But John wasn't interested in a standard account executive's job. He went to them and told them they needed him to build their direct marketing division. They looked askance at him because they didn't even have one at the time, but then they arranged a meeting with the Bangkok office. He went to work and soon built up a successful business for them. Eleven months later, John decided to go into business for himself and set up as a consultant for Volvo Asia working out of Singapore. As well as doing direct marketing for them, he also got into database marketing. But the big guns were waiting for him and he was swallowed up by a Singaporean direct marketing giant. But John wasn't fazed. He looked around for more challenges. Bangkok caught his fancy and he persevered looking for all the things we guys love about the place; money, excitement, money, challenges, and the hard work it takes to be a success. After a brief solo stint, he set up a partnership with a fellow expat, operating a boutique advertising studio. One customer was so fussy about printing quality, that John bought a printing press. To fill capacity they started out printing other peoples year books and magazines, and soon started raising local printing standards. John has retained this philosophy of excellence since then as his business has expanded.

However, John tired of creating masterpieces for other people, and turned his attentions to creating a proprietary brand. He established a new company, City Media, and was lucky enough to attract some very good people many of whom still work with him today. If you have been in Bangkok more than a few days you have probably read John's flagship publication, Bangkok Metro Magazine. If not, what are you doing in Bangkok? He started publishing Metro about 6 years ago and the magazine was an instant success. His formula of interesting stories, humorous and sometimes irreverent pokes at people and institutions, and comprehensive listings soon became a favorite for locals and expats alike. It didn't take John long to see the possibilities of putting the magazine on the Internet. His first efforts, however, were not exactly a success. His website design was good, but the organization needed to run it properly were not in place. Visitors were more often faced with a message saying the website was "under construction". And when it was online the stories were out of date, and the competitions were well and truly over. It dawned on John that he needed a separate organization to run the website. However, the

time wasn't right just then. He kept the magazine online, but concentrated his energies on building up the magazine first. Getting it published on time became an "in" joke among those who knew him. Despite deadline hassles, the magazine took off and everything got organized. Then he was at last able to turn his considerable talents to developing the website. The result today is a much improved, fully interactive site that fulfills its early promise. The new logo says it all. It's bright, colorful and dynamic. The website is fully searchable by event, venue and date. You can choose a date on the monthly calendar and get a listing of all the events for that day. Or click on a topic and view all the events for the month. John's team has got everything right in this new incarnation of bkkmetro.com. Content is what makes a valuable and useful site, and content is what he's given us. The Internet creates so much opportunity for expanding the scope and depth of the listings that Metro has been dedicated to for six years. And it also offers new and innovative ways of accessing that content. You'll find everything you need to have a good time in Bangkok. From art to music, business, travel, food, and even stuff for kids to do. Everything you need to know is right there at the click of a mouse. The website design is clean and easy to read too. The colored tabs at the top of the screen make it easy to select the general topic you'd like to find out about. Then dig down from there. Or, if that's going to take up too much of your valuable time, use the built in search engine to find what you want. And because there's very little Java or other technology to slow down loading, you get access to everything fast. John's team is also working on archiving all the articles published in Metro magazine ever since it was first published. With over 7,000 feature pages, you'll be able to search by key word, or just select a topic and go from there. Then we'll be able to trip down memory lane and say, "I was there when." There is a lot of speculation about where the Internet is going. But John is not hanging around to find out. He's already out there breaking new ground. You'll soon be able to download entertainment, listings, and so on direct to your WAP phone, or onto a personal digital organizer like a Palm Pilot. John already uses a PDA to keep track of his business while he's out and about town. It would take much more space than I have here to tell you about all the things John is doing. The big question now is not what are you doing in Bangkok, but what is John Twigg going to be doing for Bangkok in the future?
