THE UK’S BATTERY TESTING CAPABILITY: DOES THE UK HAVE ENOUGH… A GAP ANALYSIS OF THE TESTING DEMANDS AND CURRENT AND PROJECTED SUPPLY Developing a battery supply chain for automotive and other transport applications sits at the heart of the objectives for the Faraday Battery Challenge. Battery testing is key to developing and delivering Li-ion batteries for electric vehicles, which supports the UK’s important automotive sector supply chain including engineering, test and development industries. So far there is little overview on what the demand is for battery testing & what capacity and capabilities exist in the UK. This presentation will address this knowledge gap and make recommendations of ways to support the automotive sector, and how to capitalise on the emergence of a UK battery supply chain. THE KEY TO A RELIABLE LEAK TESTING PROCESS IN BATTERY PRODUCTION Since the first project with a well-known German car manufacturer in 2012, where we developed a unique filling process to test the fully assembled battery pack, ZELTWANGER has carried out more than 80 projects with around 30 different customers in in the environment of highvoltage batteries. The key to a reliable leak testing process might be an easy one. But there are a lot of influencing factors, which must be considered. One factor is the pure test item itself, which can be the assembled battery pack or module, the empty battery housing, the pressure equalization item or the cooling circuit. But there are a lot of more elements having influence on the results on which we will focus in the presentation by analyzing both the environment of the leak testing spot in the production line as well as the key process itself, that is leak testing.

NEXT GENERATION BATTERIES – SOLID STATE & SILICON ANODES Market for Solid-State Batteries in Different Applications Stemming from increased safety and energy storage per weight/volume requirements, solid-state batteries are being developed for applications of increasing size. Among 8 suppliers that offer solid-state batteries for sale in 2019, the application focus is moving from micro-scale (e.g. IOT sensors) to small-scale applications (e.g. high-end consumer electronics). Despite the urgent need for higher driving range at lower costs in the automotive sector, it will likely still take more than 5 years until automotive solid-state batteries will be market-ready because of demanding longevity and fast charge/discharge requirements. An analysis of patent portfolios by key players reveals the challenge of achieving higher energy density without increased technology risk. The combination of solid-state batteries with supercapacitors may accelerate time-to-market in the automotive sector. PIRMIN ULMANN, CO-FOUNDER & CEO, B-SCIENCE.NET

GENERATIVE ENGINEERING: AUTOMATICALLY CREATING AND EVALUATING POWERTRAIN CONCEPTS Innovating powertrain designs by moving to hybrid or electric vehicles entails a lot of design decisions on a conceptual level. For example, how many electric motors to use, if a transmission is used and which one, how to combine the torque of the electric motor(s) with the combustion engine are open questions. This presentation will introduce a methodology which enables the automatic generation and evaluation of mechatronic system concepts, based on a model, formalizing expert knowledge in an easy-touse graphical language. The resulting concepts may be evaluated with respect to multiple performance criteria, like fuel consumption, acceleration, cost and reliability.

ALTERNATIVE CELLS FOR ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTS A new chemistry is often available to the selective few, with major OEM’s dominating world cell procurement, what hope for the smaller producer looking to differentiate. AMTE Power was at the heart of Lithium ion development since its commercialisation in the late 1990’s. Our plant is a full scale prototyping facility that has helped inventors, Academics and chemists develop new cells and alternative solutions to the world energy needs. We face an interesting development challenges in cell design, due to the large scale industrialisation of cells, there is little appetite to design new chemistry’s, when the world production is pre sold without much effort. Clearly this leaves some markets faced with little choice other than to develop products or services that are not optimised for local conditions. The primary focus on cell design is also driven by global automotive OEM’s who still see range anxiety as there holy grail. At AMTE we don’t follow this approach, we look to design and develop cells that match the market and offer different solutions to the mass producers. Our new ULTRA range has been designed to offer customers performance to enhance and differentiate at a product design level, with performance levels exceeding 50c our energy storage cells provide High power solutions in formats unavailable to most. JOHN FOX, STRATEGIC BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR, AMTE POWER

LUNCH 14:00

THE RIGHT CHOICES FOR ENERGY STORAGE: USING MARKET NEEDS, TECHNOLOGY ADVANCEMENTS AND WHOLE SOLUTIONS Hydrogen fuel cell technology is commonly dismissed by the current mainstream electric vehicle (EV) development fraternity as a technology which is beyond the horizon. However, a combination of factors perhaps now set a scene where Hydrogen will start to make real inroads to a wider world of electrification.

14:30

C-ION: NEXT GENERATION CAPACITIVE ENERGY STORAGE AS AN ENABLER FOR ELECTRIC AND AUTONOMOUS MOBILITY. ZapGo based in Oxford, UK is developing Carbon-Ion (C-Ion) technology for mass deployment of electric and autonomous vehicles. The technology has the potential to remove barriers to adoption through reducing cost and improving driver experience. C-Ion are electrostatic or capacitive energy storage devices that use different materials to conventional supercapacitors. This leads to a safe and sustainable product which easier to recycle at the end of life. C-Ion operate will hold more energy than conventional supercapacitors, making them less expensive for grid deployment, enabling EV fast charging. Different form factors are also being developed for use as structural components of vehicles. HUGH SUTHERLAND, HEAD OF TECHNOLOGY, ZAPGO LTD.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LITHIUM FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ELECTRIC CARS There is a fantastic momentum around the development of Electric Vehicles across the world and Europe is investing billions of Euros to transform its auto industry and become a leader in electrified mobility. The continent is also starting to welcome large investments for lithium-ion battery factories but further upstream, in lithium mining and refining, Europe is lagging behind. Infinity Lithium and its San Jose project in Extremadura, Spain, represents a strategic investment supporting the development of a more integrated and regionalised lithium-ion battery and auto industry. HYBRID BATTERY CELL TESTING

A hybrid battery cell will typically be exposed to extreme temperature conditions, mirroring those found in the real world, using specifically manufactured chambers and test rigs. Battery cells are cycled between hot and cold temperatures, dependent on the global region they are simulating. The purpose of these tests is to establish the performance of a hybrid battery cell, focusing on charging cycles, power depletion, charging/discharging and also longevity.

LAUDA Integral XT The range of LAUDA Process Circulators provides for powerful and accurate temperature cycling in the range -90°C to +320°C. With ease of use and durability in mind the set-up time is minimised, allowing for the programming of automatic temperature cycles dependent upon the geographical region being simulated. The proven reliability ensures that the units will run seamlessly with limited maintenance over their working life, minimising downtime and ensuring the total cost of ownership (TCO) is kept to an absolute minimum.

14:00

Mild hybridisation, using a 48V system architecture offers fuel consumption benefits approaching those achieved using high-voltage systems, at a much lower cost. To maximise the benefits from a 48V mild-hybrid system, it is desirable to recuperate during deceleration events at as high a power level as possible, whilst at the same time having a relatively compact and low cost battery pack. This presentation examines the battery requirements for a mild-hybrid application and showcases testing of a mild-hybrid battery, recently developed by MAHLE Powertrain, which is capable of a continuous-power capability of more than 10 kW and a peak-power rating of up to 20 kW.

A view on technology trends in emerging automotive EV markets
