2.15 pm Case Study: Just Because It’s ‘Smart’ Doesn’t Mean It’s Clever
As the hype dissipates much of the success of future wearables innovation will come down to the ability to reflect on what has happened in the last 5 year and respond with radical new big ideas rather than continue on the same path. The future will require a total rethink in attitude, application and appearance. Peter discusses his learnings at Kinneir Dufort supporting big brands and start-ups trying to design future opportunities for ‘smarter’ wearables at the intersection of design, technology and user experience. 11.15 am Keynote: The World as a Mixed Reality Interface We are chained to a limited range of perceptions and as a result we are subscribing to a specific version of reality. To properly explore our perceptual experience, we must understand the rules that govern our minds and bodies. There is much more to the world than what we can perceive through the five senses. We are prisoners of our perception. We never experience ourselves accurately. As a result, each individual is already living in a sort of virtual reality. Our humancentric understanding of the world and our dependence on our unreliable senses creates a very reductionist view of the physical world. Now, with the explosion of hybrid and perceptual technologies such as VR, AR and MR (Mixed Reality), we are extending the possible realities we can
reach. We will explore various altered states of perception such as being out of body (via body swapping / gender swapping), adopting radically different visual or auditory systems or being focused in peripheral vision. We will also explore how we can hack our perception of vision, time, taste, smell, and as a result our corresponding judgments about the world. Discussion Points: • What do our current imaging and sensing technologies do to our perception? • How can artificial senses be used to access a greater dynamic range of reality? Speaker: Carl Smith, Principal Fellow and Director of the Learning Technology Research Centre, Ravensbourne 11.40 am Case Study: Smart Glasses are Not the Future of Consumer AR Kayvan Mirza will take the audience through why Google Glass and more generally “Smart Glasses” have failed to incite consumer interest and potential solutions to bring mobile AR to the masses. resurgence do to its high levels of material optimization. Embroidery allows the textile engineer to place single fibres, yarns, fibre bundles or even wires with high precision in a variable, predesigned geometry. Because of this high precision, embroidery is highly applicable for technical application such as textile sensors, actuators or electrodes. There are three types of embroidery technologies that are commonly used and defined in literature. These include chain and moss stitch embroidery; standard embroidery; and tailored fibre, wire or tube placement. Each of these methods can be utilized in varying ways to create highly customized Wearables. Melanie will show an overview of the technical embroidery techniques in her talk. She will also present a selection of application possibilities for each technology. Speaker: Melanie Hoerr, Manager Technical Embroidery Application, ZSK Technical Embroidery Systems 11.40 am “Mil-Spec Wearables” For over ten years, Intelligent Textiles Limited has been developing military wearables, using e-textiles to provide a secure, rugged power and data infrastructure directly within a soldier’s garments. Vrnet.IO C108 VRnet.io helps real estate developers get more leads and close more deals quickly. Real estate developers have a challenge – on new projects, they have nothing to show their potential clients except 2D images. But most people can’t imagine – much less feel – a 3D space based on 2D images. At the same time, the developer need to sell up to 30% of apartments - or get investors or partners - in order to start to build. But there is a solution. A VR showroom can show a property like in real life. Potential buyers can explore everything - and then make a more confident decision. VRNET.IO provides a quick and easy automatic conversion tool that works with existing architects’ tools. This gives our customers VR showrooms that they can show using any VR headset, or even on their websites. VR experiences make the buying decision easier – to let developers close more deals and sell their projects faster.

10.00 am Address & Welcome: Jazz Rasool, Research Fellow, Ravensbourne 10.10 am Opening Keynote: Personalising each Patient Interaction at the N of 1 Health and care have become siloed. We used to take the time to listen, observe, understand, and connect with patients. But we’ve since sacrificed value for volume, and traded relationships for revenue. Time constraints now only allow us to focus on the visible. And we’ve forgotten that patients are also people—people whose life and lifestyle are often ‘invisible’ to their provider(s). As a result, we’re missing the 95% of healthcare that happens outside the clinical setting. We’re failing to identify the non-intuitive gaps that impact health. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Life could be actionable. And patients could be partners in achieving meaningful value. Hear from Bill Bunting as he addresses; approach, findings, lessons learned, innovations, sustainability and next steps.
