Editor’s letter

Happy Holidays everyone,

This month is unique for the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. We have our annual Scholarship and Awards Gala and Toy Drive, a special occasion where we honor exceptional individuals for their work in the community and award scholarships.

Your generous donation of money and toys has a profound impact on the youth we serve, providing vital support to our year-round programming. Your contribution ensures that these programs, designed to uplift and empower young people, remain free of charge for them and their families. Children without access to such opportunities can still participate in mentorship, skill-building, and leadership development activities.

Mentoring is at the heart of the 100 Black Men of America’sAmerica’s mission, and your donation directly strengthens this critical work. Our mentors are essential in guiding, encouraging, and inspiring young people, offering them positive role models who can help them navigate life’s challenges. By fostering meaningful connections, we help youth build the confidence and skills they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

Moreover, your donation of toys brings an abundance of joy and hope to children who might otherwise go without during the holidays. This simple act of kindness can make a profound difference in their lives, showing them they are supported and cared for by their community.

Your generosity creates a lasting impact, offering youth the tools and resources to thrive and become future leaders. We are deeply grateful for your investment in their potential. Thank you.

We provide these children another choice by being around like-minded individuals with similar aspirations and goals, ensuring a brighter future for African American youth.

As The Network of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. has expanded, we have welcomed more companies and developed new programs to better serve our mission. Our focus areas, known as the 100’s Four For The Future, include mentoring, education, health and wellness, and economic empowerment. These areas guide our efforts to provide the education and empowerment necessary to transform the lives of the children we serve.

Through the expansion, we’ve created 100 Black Men Chapters that deliver unique programs that address specific needs in local communities. Through 57 years of testing, we’ve created the 100’s successful model—a proven blueprint for mentoring and developing young people into future leaders by surrounding them with a positive network and giving them the opportunity that they may not have thought was possible.

Letter from the Chairman

The December holiday is a magical time of year filled with traditions, celebrations, and moments that unite people. It’s a time when music fills the air, hope springs eternal, and communities unite in a shared spirit of joy and reflection. But beyond all the festivities lies a more profound significance— December is a bridge between the past and the future, marking the end of one year and the promise of another.

The transition from December to January opens the door to what’s possible. The new year symbolizes a clean slate, a fresh start to pursue dreams, mend relationships, make resolutions, and redefine priorities. As we say goodbye to the year that was, it’s worth celebrating the entirety of our journey—successes, struggles, and everything in between. The end of the year is not just a conclusion but a preparation for the untold story of the year to come.

As for the 100, I look forward to enhancing mentee engagement, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, escalating metrics and accountability, and building upon and strengthening community partnerships. Above all else, I look forward to the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. helping shape the lives of young men who, with guidance, patience, and a steady dose of love, will become productive members of society, the backbone of their families, and the next leaders of our community.

December is also the time for our annual 100 Black Men in Black Ties Scholarship and Awards Gala. This year, we will salute our mentees, honor community leaders, thank our partners, supporters, collaborators, and stakeholders, and celebrate each other and the holiday season. As “they” say, “This will be re!” Don’t get left out! Sponsorships, tables, and tickets are still available. Go to our website, 100blackmencle.org, for all the details.

One more thing December reminds me of is how fast time goes by. Not only is it the end of the year, but for me and many others, the month is an indication of that bridge between the past and the future - signified by our birthdays. So, as the year ends and a new one begins, let’s embrace the opportunity to learn from the past, connect with others, create the best version of ourselves, and dream boldly for the future our young people will inherit. Happy holidays and a joyful new year!

Empowering Through Service: Academy Visits the Cleveland

Service:

Saturday Food Bank

The Saturday Academy, a program organized and supported by the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc., recently embarked on an inspiring and educational journey with a tour of the Cleveland Food Bank. This visit wasn’t just an excursion but an opportunity for the youth to learn about the importance of service, the impact of fighting hunger, and the role nutrition plays in creating strong, healthy communities.

As the students arrived, the Food Bank staff greeted them warmly and shared an overview of the organization’s mission. The Cleveland Food Bank serves as a critical lifeline for thousands of families in Northeast Ohio, distributing millions of meals annually through its network of food pantries, meal programs, and shelters. The tour began with a glimpse into the facility’s inner workings, showcasing the complex operations that keep the Food Bank running efficiently.

The students were amazed by the scale of the operation. Conveyor belts hummed as volunteers sorted and packed food while forklifts moved pallets of goods across the warehouse. The staff explained how donations, from fresh produce and pantry staples to frozen goods, are processed, ensuring that families in need receive balanced and nutritious meals.

For many of the students, the visit was an eyeopener. They were amazed by the scale of the operation and the number of weekly meals distributed, which underscored the magnitude of food insecurity in their community. The staff shared sobering and motivating statistics, such as the fact that one in six people in Ohio struggles with hunger. The visit was a transformative experience, broadening their understanding of community service and the importance of nutrition.

The experience also included an engaging nutrition session taught by Mentoring Co-Chair Dt. Ernest Smoot highlighted how access to healthy food can transform lives. In their daily diets, the students learned the importance of balanced meals, portion control, and fruits

and vegetables. The staff demonstrated how simple, affordable ingredients could be used to create nutritious meals, emphasizing that good nutrition is not just about eating but about fueling the body for success.

The Academy members also participated in a hands-on activity, assembling snack bags for children who rely on the Food Bank’s programs. Working together to pack healthy snacks, they began to see the direct impact of their efforts. One student remarked, “It feels good to know that something as small as this bag can make a difference in someone’s day.”

Beyond the lessons in service and nutrition, the visit reinforced the values the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland strive to instill in the youth. By witnessing the importance of community support and understanding how organizations like the Food Bank address critical needs, the students left inspired to be agents of change in their own lives and neighborhoods. This newfound understanding of community support should make us all feel more connected and united in our mission to make a difference. As the tour concluded, the students thanked the staff and reflected on the day’s experiences. The visit to the Cleveland Food Bank was not just a lesson in giving back but a call to action. It was a reminder that they, too, have the power to make a difference. For instance, the snack bags they assembled will provide nutritious snacks for children in need, and the knowledge they gained about nutrition can be shared with their families and peers, potentially improving the health of their entire community.

100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland Host Mentor/Mentee Breakfast

Building a Fellowship with Your Mentee: Why It Matters

On November 23, 2024, The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. recently organized a Mentor/ Mentee Breakfast, bringing together mentors and mentees for an inspiring and impactful event. This gathering provided a unique opportunity for young mentees to connect with experienced mentors in a supportive and empowering environment.

The breakfast was not just a gathering, but a celebration of community, belonging, and shared growth. Attendees engaged in meaningful conversations, interactive activities, and motivational discussions that reinforced the importance of mentorship within the community, making everyone feel included and part of a

larger movement.

The event underscored the mission of the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland: to educate, uplift, and empower young Black men to reach their full potential. By creating spaces like the Mentor/Mentee Breakfast, the organization continues to make a profound difference in the lives of its members and the broader community.

Fostering a solid fellowship with your mentee is a cornerstone of effective mentorship. This connection is not merely about offering advice or instruction; it is about cultivating trust, mutual respect, and a supportive relationship that allows the mentee to thrive personally and professionally. When a mentor builds

a fellowship with their mentee, it creates a foundation that enhances learning, promotes growth, and fosters long-term success.

At the heart of mentorship lies the principle of trust. A genuine fellowship, fostered by the mentor, allows mentees to feel safe sharing their goals, challenges, and insecurities. The mentor’s role in creating this safe and supportive environment is crucial. When mentors take the time to listen and understand their mentee’s aspirations, they create an environment where vulnerability is met with encouragement. Trust forms the bedrock for open communication, enabling the mentee to ask questions and seek guidance without fear of judgment. This transparency facilitates personal development and empowers the mentee to make informed decisions.

Moreover, building a fellowship helps mentors tailor their guidance to the mentee’s unique needs. Every individual is different, with distinct strengths, weaknesses, and goals. A robust mentor-mentee relationship showcases the mentor’s adaptability, allowing them to recognize these differences and adapt their approach accordingly. This personalized guidance is more

impactful than generic advice, as it aligns with the mentee’s specific circumstances and ambitions, making the mentee feel understood and catered to.

A strong fellowship also promotes mutual learning. While mentors impart wisdom and experience, mentees often bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. This exchange of knowledge fosters a dynamic relationship where both parties grow. For the mentor, it is an opportunity to refine leadership skills and stay attuned to new trends or insights, while for the mentee, it is a chance to gain confidence and develop critical thinking skills.

Additionally, a robust mentor-mentee connection instills resilience and motivation in the mentee. The journey toward personal and professional development is rarely linear, and setbacks are inevitable. In these moments, a mentor’s encouragement can be a powerful motivator. By being a reliable source of support, mentors help mentees persevere through challenges and remain focused on their long-term goals, empowering them and making them feel capable.

Building a fellowship also sets the stage for lasting professional and personal networks. Mentorship is not a one-time interaction but an ongoing relationship that often extends beyond the formal mentoring period. This bond can evolve into a lifelong partnership, providing both mentor and mentee with valuable connections and opportunities for collaboration.

Finally, mentorship grounded in fellowship leaves a lasting impact on the mentee’s character and leadership style. When mentees experience the benefits of a supportive and nurturing relationship, they are likelier to emulate these qualities in their interactions. This creates a ripple effect, spreading the positive influence of mentorship to future generations and underscoring the long-term significance of your role as a mentor. The lasting impact of mentorship on the mentee’s character and leadership style is a testament to the enduring influence of your mentorship.

Building a fellowship with your mentee is vital, but it’s also a journey of empowerment. It fosters trust, promotes personalized growth, encourages mutual learning, and provides unwavering support. By investing in this relationship, mentors help their mentees achieve their potential and contribute to a legacy of empowerment and growth that benefits everyone involved. Your role as a mentor is crucial in this journey, and your continued efforts are instrumental in fostering a strong fellowship with your mentee.

The Interrelation Between Health and Education

Health and education are deeply interconnected, forming a reciprocal relationship that profoundly affects individuals and societies. Health is a prerequisite for learning, while education equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to maintain and improve their wellbeing. This dynamic underscores the importance of addressing both domains to enhance human development and societal progress.

Health as a Catalyst for Educational Success

Good health is foundational for effective learning. Physically healthy students are likelier to attend school regularly, engage actively, and achieve better academic outcomes. In contrast, illnesses such as malnutrition, chronic diseases, and untreated medical conditions can hinder cognitive development and reduce classroom participation. For instance, studies have shown that a child with persistent respiratory issues may struggle to concentrate, missing critical instructional time. Similarly, health-related school absences limit learning opportunities, creating gaps in knowledge that are hard to bridge.

Addressing these barriers through school health programs, vaccinations, and regular check-ups can significantly improve educational outcomes. Mental Health and Cognitive Performance

Mental health is equally essential in the educational context, as it directly influences cognitive abilities, emotional regulation, and social interactions. Conditions like anxiety, depression, and trauma can impede memory, focus, and problem-solving skills, limiting academic progress. Schools that incorporate mental health initiatives—such as counseling, peer support groups, and stress management

workshops—create environments that foster psychological well-being and resilience. Early intervention is not just necessary; it’s crucial, as untreated mental health challenges during childhood can have long-lasting effects on academic achievement and life outcomes. This urgency calls for proactive measures in our educational systems.

Education’s Role in Promoting Health

Education plays a pivotal role in empowering individuals to make informed health choices, thereby contributing to better health outcomes over a lifetime. Health literacy, developed through education, enables people to understand medical advice, adopt preventive measures, and access healthcare services effectively. Educated individuals are more likely to practice healthy behaviors, such as maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking or

substance abuse. Furthermore, education equips communities to advocate for better healthcare infrastructure and policies, creating environments where healthy choices are accessible and encouraged.

Addressing Inequities Through Integrated Approaches

The connection between health and education is particularly significant in addressing inequalities. Marginalized populations often face dual disadvantages: inadequate healthcare and poor educational opportunities. This reinforces cycles of poverty, where poor health limits educational attainment, and limited education perpetuates poor health outcomes. Programs integrating health and education, such as the Healthy Schools Program, School-Based Health Centers, and Free School Meals Initiative, have effectively reduced disparities. By addressing both needs simultaneously, such initiatives create pathways to more significant equity and social mobility.

Conclusion

The interdependence of health and education highlights their central role in fostering human potential. Health provides the physical and mental foundation for learning, while education equips individuals with the tools to maintain and improve their health. Integrated strategies that address both areas are essential for breaking cycles of disadvantage and ensuring sustainable development. Recognizing and acting on this interconnection is vital for creating a society where individuals and communities thrive. Educators, policymakers, and health professionals are not just crucial, but integral in implementing and supporting these integrated initiatives, contributing to improved educational and health outcomes.

It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.

Meet Justin Horton: A Honoree for the 2024 Gala

2024

Economic Empowerment Award Winner

The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc., will hold its annual Scholarship & Awards Gala on December 14, 2024, at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Independence, Ohio. This is where the chapter recognizes some of the leaders who are doing outstanding things in the community.

One honoree is Mr. Justin Horton, who will receive the Economic Empowerment Award. Justin has been on a mission and making a difference in the finance world for a long time.

“My interest in finance began when I discovered the concept of compound interest—a simple yet powerful idea that completely captivated me. During college, I was fortunate to intern at National City Bank. One summer, I worked with the private client group and had the chance to interact with individuals who owned various types of investments, such as marketable securities and real estate. As I connected the dots, I realized how these investments could be strategically used to build wealth—a way to make money work for you. That understanding sparked my passion for finance and inspired

me to help others maximize their assets,” said Justin.

Can you share a defining moment or achievement in your career?

Several moments stand out in my career: Surviving the five-year mark: This is a significant milestone in our industry, where about 90–95% of add-ons don’t make it past their fifth year. Reaching that point gave me the confidence to continue building my practice. Hiring my first employee: Taking on the responsibility of managing someone else’s livelihood was a pivotal moment for me. It meant I was no longer accountable for myself but also the well-being of others.

Seeing long-term advice come to fruition: Recently, a client thanked me for the guidance I provided 15 years ago, which had a meaningful impact on their financial success. Moments like this embody what we do—helping clients achieve their goals and create lasting legacies.

What challenges have you faced in your career, and how have you overcome them?

The greatest challenge in this business is persistence. While technical expertise is critical, understanding human behavior—especially the emotions and psychology surrounding money— is equally essential. This becomes even more complex when working with couples who may have differing financial philosophies. Navigating these dynamics often requires patience, empathy, and diplomacy. Over time, I’ve developed the ability to balance these aspects, which has been key to my success.

Who are some of the mentors who have influenced you?

I’ve been fortunate to have many mentors throughout my professional journey. My first exposure to professional guidance came through the INROADS program, which provides internships to minority youth. This program taught me how to be experienced, ethical, and ambitious.  I built relationships with peers and more traditional mentors, which have endured over the years. Additionally, during college, I shadowed an African-American financial advisor—a pivotal experience that gave me the confidence to envision my success in this field. Unfortunately, I can’t recall his name, but his influence was profound.

What has been the most rewarding part of your work?

As a wealth advisor, there’s nothing more fulfilling than seeing clients reach their goals and knowing I played a part in their success. Over my 20+ years in the industry, I’ve watched childrenn’t even born when I started

going to college because of the financial plans I helped their parents implement. I’ve witnessed the impact of proper planning on families navigating loss or long-term illnesses. Ultimately, the greatest reward is seeing the positive effects of my work on people’s lives.

Are there any innovative projects or initiatives you’re particularly proud of?

I’m incredibly proud of my work in philanthropy. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of serving on several boards that have made meaningful contributions to Northeast Ohio—and, if I may say so, to the broader world. Currently, I serve as:

•Chair of the Investment Committee for the Deaconess Foundation

•Member of the Board of Directors for the American Endowment Foundation

•Member of the Cuyahoga Community College Business Advisory Committee

•Member of the African-American Philanthropy Committee with The Cleveland Foundation

•Member of the Gift Planning Advisory Committee with the Cleveland Museum of Art

These roles allow me to combine my financial expertise with my passion for improving lives through strategic giving and long-term planning.

“The Next Chapter: Embracing Life After Retirement”

A Beautiful Chapter of James Ferguson’s Life

Retirement marks the beginning of a new and fulfilling chapter—a time to shift gears from work demands to the joys of life’s simpler pleasures. It’s a moment to reflect on years of hard work and look forward to the opportunities that come with newfound freedom. For many, retirement is a time to focus on what truly matters: spending quality time with family and exploring the world through travel. The sense of freedom that retirement brings is genuinely inspiring.

100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. member James Ferguson has retired. We are grateful for his contribution and wish him all the best in this new chapter of his life. He is the Economic Empowerment Committee co-chair and active with the Saturday Academy. “My career in the industry spans 34 years; the first four years were spent in my apprenticeship,

where I learned the skill set to become a Journeyman High Voltage Electrical Lineman. I started with the City of Cleveland (CPP) in 1994; I had my first promotion in 2008 to Assistant Superintendent, and six months later, I was promoted to Chief of the Bureau of Street Lighting, where I remained until 2017. In 2017, I was promoted to Chief of Transmission & Distribution until my final promotion to Chief of Maintenace and Construction, where I managed all phases of  Overhead and Underground construction and Maintenace,” said Ferguson.

One of the most rewarding aspects of retirement is the opportunity to deepen family connections. Without the constraints of a daily work schedule, retirees can fully embrace time with loved ones, creating cherished memories and strengthening bonds. These family moments, whether spent babysitting grandchildren, hosting family gatherings, or simply sharing meals, bring a unique joy and a profound connection.

“ When I look back over my 30yrs at Cleveland Public Power, there are many moments and achievements that I am extremely proud of, but at the top of the list would be during my tenure as the Chief of the Bureau of Street Lighting, where I was allowed to represent the city and CPP on the Department of Energy’s (MSSSL) LED street lightings Technical Committee, where we create the LED Street Lighting model specifications that are typically used today when cities are converting their streetlights to LED lighting.,” said Ferguson.

James was a dedicated employee and innovative. “I am equally as proud that I then later created a citywide LED street lighting conversation specification and then witnessed a citywide transformation that earned the city of Cleveland an international award for being one of the world’s most transformative cities,” said Ferguson.

What he enjoyed most about his job was working alongside and sharing ideas with many talented people. “Over the years, I had the privilege of working on so many joint projects that allowed me to collaborate across other Departments with other city leaders such as Directors, Commissioners, and Chiefs all working together on a common goal,” Ferguson said.

The best advice James would give to someone who wanted to work in his field is to never meet a stranger in the industry you’re working in. Always be open-minded, welcoming, and ready to roll your sleeves up and help because that is where you will start to pull away from the pack.

James Ferguson’s retirement is not a period but a new chapter filled with opportunities. His excitement for the future is contagious. He is grateful to have found a role that allows him to continue contributing to the quality of life for Cleveland residents, a task he enjoyed in his former role.

James currently serves on the board of trustees at his church. Still, he is looking to see where

else he can give back more at his church and with the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. “I’ve already started getting my golf tips from my semi-pro buddies, lol, but plan to get started with official lessons over the winter. I’ve always been somewhat of a gym rat and see more of that in the future. Last but not least, looking to spend more time with loved ones and enjoy more fun in the sun,” said Ferguson.

James was raised by both parents, James A. Ferguson Sr. and Velma M. Ferguson; his parents were married 58 years ago when his dad passed in 2021. Growing up, he enjoyed life with his sisters; I knew they were loved. “I have been married to the love of my life for 29 years.  We have five children(Kenny, Jasmine, Chelsea, James III, & Jaren) and five grand, whom we call our littles. I’m proud to say that all five of our children are college graduates with degrees from some of the best colleges in the country( John Carroll, Ursuline, Cleveland State, Howard University, and Ohio State University,” said Ferguson.

The beauty of retirement lies not only in the freedom it offers but also in the intentional choices made to prioritize joy, connection, and exploration. It’s a time to celebrate achievements, nurture relationships, and seek adventures that bring happiness and peace. James Ferguson’s retirement is a testament to the joy and fulfillment this phase of life can bring.

Ultimately, retirement is a season of life to savor—a time to appreciate the past, live fully in the present, and dream boldly for the future. Whether spent with family, traveling the world, or simply enjoying the quiet moments, it’s a well-deserved reward for a life well-lived.

James is a hardworking brother looking to give back to the youth involved with the Cleveland Chapter of the 100 Black Men and make a difference in their lives. “This is me saying to all the world, keep God first, and all things are possible,” said Ferguson.

It Takes a Village: The Village of Healing Opens Second Location

The African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” reminds us of the strength found in community. At The Village of Healing, we’ve reimagined this wisdom: “It takes a village to heal the village.”

Bringing Care to Your Neighborhood

On November 24, 2024, we celebrated a major milestone with the soft opening of our second location in Cleveland’s Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood. This expansion is more than just a new medical center—it’s a commitment to meeting our community exactly where they are: medically, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Our strategic location means less commuting and more accessibility. We understand that healing begins with convenience. By establishing our center in a neighborhood where our patients live, work, and thrive, we’re breaking down barriers to quality healthcare.

A Holistic Approach to Wellness

The opening was marked by a powerful blessing from pastors and clergy members of Greater Cleveland. This heartfelt ceremony symbolized faith, unity, and a shared commitment to wellness. The event highlighted our mission to offer care grounded in spiritual and cultural alignment.

The Annual Toy Drive by the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. Coming December 18,

The holiday season is a time of giving, gratitude, and community. For the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc., this spirit comes alive through their Annual Toy Drive, a joyous occasion that brings immeasurable joy to needy children and strengthens the bonds between members and the community they serve. This cherished tradition is more than just a seasonal activity—it’s a vital expression of the organization’s commitment to empowering the next generation. The joy of giving is a powerful force that uplifts us all.

Michael Copeland is the Toy Drive Chair, and his passionate leadership ensures its continued success. Terry Maynard, a past chairman and fellow member, contributes by offering one of his locations as the venue, creating a welcoming space for all.

The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland’s Annual Toy Drive reaches new heights each year, touching more lives than the last. Under the dedicated leadership of Michael Copeland, the event has become a beacon of hope for families in need. A cornerstone of its success is Terry Maynard, a devoted member who generously offers one of his business locations as the hub for this heartwarming effort. His space transforms into a haven of holiday cheer, filled with laughter, toys, and community spirit. Maynard and Copeland exemplify the organization’s mission, proving the power of unity and service during the holidays. “Come hang out with the 100 and celebrate the holidays. No cover charge; bring a toy to help support our youth,” said Copeland.

The Toy Drive is one of the organization’s cornerstone events, bringing together members, supporters, and the community to ensure that children who might otherwise go without can experience the magic of the holidays. Toys of

all shapes and sizes are collected, wrapped, and distributed to needy families across Greater Cleveland. The joy on the faces of the children who receive these gifts is immeasurable, and the impact on the community is profound, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. Your contributions make this possible, and you should be proud of the difference you’re making. This is our community, and we’re making it brighter together.

The Annual Toy Drive, hosted by the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc., is more than a seasonal tradition—a dual celebration of generosity and camaraderie. This cherished event collects toys for needy children and serves as the organization’s Membership Holiday Party, bringing together members, their families, and the community in a shared spirit of giving. It’s a powerful demonstration of what we can achieve when we come together with a shared purpose. Our unity is our strength, and it’s what makes this event so special.

Set against a backdrop of festive decorations, music, and holiday treats, the event is heartwarming and purposeful. Members arrive with unwrapped toys, ready to contribute to

the cause. As the pile of gifts grows, so does the sense of unity among the attendees. Conversations flow freely as members celebrate their shared achievements and reflect on the impact their collective efforts have made throughout the year.

The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. has always been dedicated to mentoring, education, and economic empowerment. The Toy Drive reflects these values, offering an opportunity to teach younger generations about giving back. By participating in the event, members reinforce the importance of service and show how collective effort can create meaningful change.

Every toy donated tells a story—of generosity, hope, and the belief that every child deserves to feel valued. For many families facing financial hardship, the holidays can be stressful rather than joyful. The toys provided through this initiative help alleviate some of that burden, reminding families that they are not alone and that their community supports them.

The Annual Toy Drive’s success relies heavily on members’ involvement. Each member brings unique contributions through donations, outreach, or volunteering during the event. However, it’s important to note that the active participation of volunteers is not just meaningful; it’s crucial to set an example for younger mentees and demonstrate that everyone’s efforts, no matter how small, are integral to the event’s success. We encourage all members to consider volunteering for the Toy Drive this year. Your involvement as a volunteer can make a significant difference in the lives of these children and families.

These moments serve as a reminder of why the organization exists: to inspire hope and create opportunities for future generations. Your involvement in the Toy Drive can be a deeply fulfilling and rewarding experience, providing you with a unique opportunity to make a

meaningful difference in the lives of others.

While the drive’s immediate goal is to provide toys, the event fosters a more profound sense of community. It brings together people from all walks of life—members, volunteers, and recipients—with a common purpose. This unity helps break down barriers and builds longlasting relationships after the holidays.

The Toy Drive also highlights the organization’s broader mission to address systemic issues like poverty and inequality. Providing for families during the holidays, the 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc. takes one small step toward leveling the playing field, reminding everyone that no contribution is too small to create a brighter future.

As the Annual Toy Drive approaches, members are encouraged to get involved in any way possible. Whether through monetary donations, volunteering, or spreading the word, their participation is crucial to the event’s success. Each toy collected represents a gift and a message of hope, love, and possibility for a brighter tomorrow.

The 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland, Inc., have long been a pillar of leadership and advocacy in their community. The Annual Toy Drive is a shining example of their dedication to these principles, proving that even the most minor acts of kindness can create ripple effects of joy and inspiration. As the season of giving begins, members are reminded that their efforts are the heart and soul of this cherished event. Together, they can ensure that no child goes without a reason to smile this holiday season.

The toys are packed for distribution as the night concludes, and members leave with a renewed sense of purpose. The dual celebration perfectly captures the holiday spirit: giving, gratitude, and togetherness.

Don’t Let the Holidays Stress You Out

The holidays, often seen as the most beautiful time of the year, can also bring significant stress. However, managing this stress is not only possible but also essential for preserving the season’s joy and focusing on what truly matters. The relief that comes from implementing

these strategies can bring a sense of hope and motivation. Here are strategies to help navigate the holidays with greater ease and balance.

The holiday season is a time of joy, togetherness, and celebration, but for many, it also brings the stress of shopping for gifts.

This seemingly simple task can become a source of anxiety due to financial pressure, time constraints, and the expectation to find the “perfect” gift. Understanding these stressors and finding strategies to manage them can help make holiday gift-giving a more enjoyable experience.

One of the primary sources of stress when shopping for holiday gifts is the financial burden. The holidays often come with a long list of recipients—family, friends, colleagues, and sometimes neighbors or teachers. The desire to give meaningful and thoughtful gifts can conflict with budgetary constraints, leaving many stretched thin.

Shopping for gifts can also be emotionally draining, especially for those navigating complex family dynamics or grieving the loss of a loved one. The holidays often heighten emotions, and gift-giving can feel like a reminder of strained relationships or absent individuals. For parents, the stress of meeting children’s expectations for specific toys or gadgets can add another layer of tension. Additionally, some people experience “decision fatigue” when faced with endless options. This mental exhaustion from making too many choices can diminish the joy of shopping, turning it into a burdensome chore rather than an act of love.

Sales, promotions, and societal pressure to buy expensive or trendy items only add to the problem. Social media exacerbates this, with posts showcasing elaborate gifts and grand gestures. Many people feel compelled to match these standards, even if it means going into debt. Credit card bills in January often serve as a harsh reminder of overspending during the holidays, which can turn what should be a joyful season into one overshadowed by financial regret.

The holiday season is notoriously busy, with work deadlines, family gatherings, and social commitments filling the calendar. Finding time to shop for gifts amidst these obligations can

feel overwhelming. Procrastination often adds to this stress, leading to frantic, last-minute shopping trips with limited options and rushed choices.

Online shopping offers some relief, but even this comes with challenges. Shipping deadlines, outof-stock items, and concerns about delivery times can add to the pressure. Constantly juggling tasks can leave little room for reflection on what the season represents—gratitude, generosity, and connection.

The holidays don’t have to be a source of stress. With thoughtful planning, realistic expectations, and a focus on what truly matters, you can create a season filled with joy, connection, and meaning. By simplifying tasks, maintaining balance, and prioritizing self-care, you’ll be better equipped to embrace the holiday spirit and cherish the moments that make it unique.
