When did you find out you wanted to become a Stylist? Three years ago I worked in a Boutique where they sold Evening and Party Gowns. I really enjoyed styling and advising my clients to look their best for Parties and Weddings etc. Despite that I felt that I needed more creative freedom in fashion, it just did not fill me entirely. Since then I knew I wanted to work as a fashion stylist. Still only about a year ago I took a Styling course. No regrets crossed my mind since then, because it passed my expectations, and became my dream job! A lesson learned also is that you really have to do your utmost best to get somewhere in the fashion industry.

Did you ever experience something go wrong? My very first portfolio shoot did not go according to my mood board. The communication with the make up artist was a bit off. He wanted to go along with a theatrical extravagant Smokey eyes look, whereas that feeling had not been captured in my mood board at all. Due to that we had a quick discussion. In the end it did go well, sort of.

Has fashion always been your thing? Fashion has always been a passion in my life. Back in the days I wanted to become a designer, but in 2005 I had to stop my design education due to financial shortcomings. Either way it was not nurturing my strength, all this drawing and designing of clothing. But yes, I have always been busy with fashion. I breathe fashion 24 hours a day.

When are you satisfied? Only once I leave a set with a good feeling am I satisfied. Finally I am satisfied if I made the right selection with my team, which we can all equally support. Of course good results that make my clients enthusiastic.

Do you get many projects/jobs If you do, for which magazines/brands? At this point I keep myself busy building a strong portfolio with free work. I really enjoy doing that, because you get that extra freedom to create your own style. Another plus point is, you always get to know a new team. I really find it important to stand behind my portfolio before I contact magazines. I have been featured twice in Blogs with my work, but of course my goal is to once work for the big fashion magazines. What do you enjoy doing most? Dragging around clothing all day around from shopping... hmmm...just kidding. I prefer the shootings itself, because the entire teams contribution, the working together is overwhelming. Achieving good results together while creating something beautiful is amazing.

54

What are you really proud of? I am very proud of my innate ability to achieve and drive. Styling really became a passion. It is all about falling and getting back up again in the fashion business, but that has made me stronger.

Do you think about yourself that you are a good stylist? Yes, but of course you can always top it off. Nevertheless I always put myself 100% in. Everyday I learn more, which just makes me better. What disgusts you? Dishonest people, fake people, and people that are not themselves. It is better to be hated for what you are, than loved for what you are not. I find it very important to be true to oneself. Did you ever do a styling and it just did not look good enough? Yes, but I make sure I have back up options with me. I always shop extra, especially handy when you are in doubt about an outfit.

What makes an outfit good in your opinion? The right jewelry, accessories, amazingly beautiful high heels and a subtle handbag. Or even a huge bag. Where do you get your inspiration? Everywhere I can get it from. Locations, designers, trends, and especially in other countries. Do you prefer working with men or women? I do not really have a preference, I like working with both. Everyone works in their own way and style, which is also inspiring to me. To me the most important thing, regardless of the gender, is that it is fun at the set. Only if the atmosphere as a team is right do you achieve the best results. Which people would you like to work with in the future? I would love to work with Joke Schaper, due to her way of capturing pictures at a set, and her amazing ability to put it all together. There are also other photographers I want to work with that I have not worked with before. Olof Wessels, Richard Monsieurs, Rickard Baker, and maybe one day Andy Tan. Which one was the most and least fun collaboration up until now? The least fun I had during my first shoot. I myself was insecure, and on top of that the deviance with the Make Up artist. But since then I only had fabulous shoots.

What are you qualities and weaknesses? And why? My weakness is being to quiet, and contained. I really have to try to be more brutal, because I could loose my head if I don’t. That is what it is about in this business. You have to be seen and heard. You have to be at the right place at the right time. My strength is the ability to implement. If I want something I really go after it. I will always keep my goals in focus. Which one was the most and least fun collaboration up until now? The least fun I had during my first shoot. My ultimate goal is to become a respected and successful fashion stylist. My biggest dream come true would be to travel abroad and work as a fashion stylist.

interview with photographer

JUUL DE VRIES

176

Model & Mua Merel

177

When and why did you start with photography? When I was a little boy my father had a black Agfa box in a brown leather bag. With that he was busy taking pictures of his three boys. That gadget worked with a film reel. When full he went to the local photography studio to have it developed. After a few days he could pick up the printed pictures and negative film in a wide envelope, I remember. Taking pictures seemed intriguing, and at the same time it was arduous to imagine how you could achieve realistic images out of a film reel. In any case you had to look through the viewer, pick a frame and press a button at the side. Then the picture was captured inside the machine. My need fort hat gadget grew and got so far that my father could use it less, because I was always using his magic box. Do you have many jobs, or do you work more for yourself? I am in a situation where I don’t financially depend on having photography jobs. But when a fun job comes my way I will not let it pass, let that be clearly stated! Most work is free work, which can be divided into fife categories. And another one is to be seen at www.juuldevries. com What do you like doing the most? The execution of my free work I find inspiring, astonishing and simply great. Every shoot is a worthy personal encounter. I set myself the goal to give the model the freedom to get out of her skin, to let herself go, preferably to find her natural expressions. I have no desire to work with male models. That I keep coaching during a shoot for optimal results should be clear. Why do you shoot analog? Kodak produces The T-MAX 100-120 film, a black and white middle format film, which asks for custom T-MAX development. That method produces soft negatives with a regular fine grain structure, which gives skin a nice plastic display. Do you prefer shooting in a studio or outside? Indoor shoots are ideal. That has many reasons: the communication can run smoothly; it is easy to create an atmosphere, and when it is freezing cold and snowing outside you have it nicely dry and warm inside. On top of that you have to deal with all sorts of visual and audio distractions outside, which can make a great shoot difficult.

178

How do you edit the analog pictures? I am a hybrid photographer. That means that I take the images analog and from the scan of the negative onwards I finish it up digitally. In fact I cycle between the analog and digital world. Coloring black and white files using Adobe Photoshop CS 3 is a time consuming task, because each color is on a separate layer. Like that I determine how the photographic color scheme will look like, sometimes contrasting, sometimes tone-on-tone, it depends on the mood I want to create. Where do you get your inspiration? I assume it has to do with a thick thumb. Let me mention one example. When selecting the best from an indoor shoot I think of all kinds of possibilities for backdrops. Therefore I have paper and pen handy to put those expressions of creativity instantly down. Creativity for me comes easy; it has the appearance that during its distribution, I’ve been first in line ... When are you satisfied with a picture, and when not? A photographic image passed when it contains visual appeal. It has to trigger the viewer’s imagination and has to be technically perfect. Those three factors define the content and qualitative characteristics of an image. What is your best picture in your opinion? I cannot say that right now. Only when I have stopped taking pictures I will have a look at all my works and create a top ten. I would say, ask again later... What makes a picture good in your opinion? The assessment of pictures is and will always be a subjective thing. Your emotions, thoughts, and ways of handling things might differ from one day to the next. All these factors influence the assessment of a picture. With me, if I get excited with an image, the chances are bigger that I look at it longer. And that to me is a great image.

What don’t you like? Photography and narcissism are brother and sister, they belong together. A model is proud of her body, proud of herself, and she likes to show that to others. Due to that few men can positively handle the photographic attention their female model girlfriends get. Embarrassing situations evolve when boyfriends tag along- conscious or unconscious- he sees me as rival. Model photography deals with self-expression, living your freedom, and sexuality. I play into her emotional and erotic wishes, and while we are doing that the boyfriend needs to take a step back. I hate having jealous partners present during shoots. Do you consider yourself a good photographer? In our Calvinistic country there is little room for self-glorification. Nevertheless, I dare to say that my solo shows, my participation in group exhibitions, my hundreds of lectures on photography in the country, and the results of my thematic approach and the many enthusiastic responses to pictures I have on my site, model mayhem and Facebook… make me feel like I’m doing fine... With who would you like to work in the future? I constantly innovate myself. As a result, I keep looking for qualified people I want to enter into a professional partnership with. I believe that mentioning names here is not good because it deprives the people I have had a pleasant and professional collaboration with.

Your series “Retro”, what was the inspiration for that, how did you get that idea? Before I began my retro project I started with *sophisticated women *. A theme where I placed female models in an arrogant way on a pedestal. It was important that the models in question make contact with the camera, but in a cool, semi detached way. After two years I had enough. Emotionally I made a 180-degree turn when it comes to photography. Today, it is the mischievous, cute and innocent that make the clock go round. You know, I needed something new and I must say, I consider the retro project until today excellent! How many models did you need for that theme, and why did you choose them? Until now I have worked with a couple of models for that theme, and that number will still increase. I have not yet touched on all the subtopics of the retro scheme. The fact remains that there are many alternative and extrovert models. For these shoots models need to have a healthy dose of acting ability, in order to pose shy and also as a cute pin up, or even Lolita.

What are your strengths and weaknesses? I have weaknesses, but luckily also strengths. Do you want to continue taking pictures forever? Photography is my passion. Helmut Newton was in his eighties when he had to stop with photography. That was not due to him having lost interest, but because it did not work anymore after his fatal car crash. Concerning that I have a few more decades to go!

FART 12 ‘’Green’’ Contribution Deadline December 20th 2010. Publication: December 30th 2010.Green has many denotations. It is a secondary colour, and stands for economically friendly behaviour. FART is genuinely economical, since it is an entirely digital magazine and not available in print. More and more people choose to live economically conscious and choose for healthy and environmentally friendly products. The last FART in 2010 will therefore stand in the “green light”. This topic can be interpreted as wide as possible. You can do a photo shoot entirely decorated with the colour green, but you can also find another meaning of the colour and let it shine in a different light from a different angle.

FART 13 “Old Memories” Contribution Deadline January 28th 2011. Publication: February 7th 2011. In this edition of FART we will dive into the nostalgia of the past. How did people live in the middle ages? What kind of clothing did people in the Stone Age wrap them selves into? What was the latest hair do in the Hippy 70s? What do we remember from our own youth that inspires us to be successful at our work nowadays? Terms, such as retro, vintage, old-timers, and history are key words in that theme.

Fart 14 “Energy” Contribution Deadline March 25th 2011. Publication April 3rd 2011. The word “energy” will probably ring a lot of bells. Literally you will think of electricity, but if you evolve that thought a little you might also think of the energy drink “Red Bull” for example. Either you can portray energy in the way you retouch the picture, with many lines and movement, or you can have a shoot at an energy control center. Maybe you want to take it up a notch and think about robots and other future technological advances. The sky is the limit; maybe we will see some majorly exciting Aliens beaming themselves onto a cornfield?

Fart 15 “On the contrary” Contribution Deadline May 26th 2011. Publication: June 2nd 2011. This FART stands for “the opposites”. Black vs. white, rich vs. poor, countryside vs. city life, beautiful vs. ugly, and so on. Again a diverse theme where you can let your imaginations take you places.

FART 16 “Sound of FART” Contribution Deadline July 29th 2011. Publication: August 5th 2011. It might sound a bit rancid, but we are NOT looking for the exact variety of fart sounds. This FART will be catering to sounds and music. It will be a special music edition, filled with interviews of a variety of different musical heroes and bands. We will also feature stories, columns, and picture material of course. Photo series and art inspired by music. Any genre of music is welcome. From Rock and Roll, over Classic, to Jazz… Bring it on!
