Try our Prep taster days & nights!
From their very first day at Clayesmore Prep, children encounter endless opportunities and exciting experiences. In fact, The Good Schools Guide says there’s ‘never a dull moment’ at this vibrant school that shares 62 acres of stunning parkland and fabulous facilities with the Senior School. The journey begins in the Nursery and Pre-Prep, which nestle together in a delightful woodland setting that is ideal for outdoor play and exploration. Little ones are lavished with individual attention in small classes, giving them the time to develop their unique abilities. They learn through play in a safe, nurturing atmosphere, while trying out all kinds of activities taught by specialist teachers such as dance, music, drama and swimming. Clayesmore also has its own fleet of minibuses so even the youngest children can learn from the wider world around them. Another advantage for busy parents is the Pre-Prep’s extended opening hours with before and after school care and for those below Nursery age there are free fortnightly play sessions. The adventure continues in Year 3 when children confidently step up to the Prep School to be immersed in a whirlwind of

learning, sport, music, art, drama and more. The Prep curriculum follows the National Curriculum but has a broader, more creative approach with specialist teaching for music, French, games, PE, swimming and art, as well as IT and Design & Technology. Each pupil’s potential is realised as they continue to receive time and attention in a warm, friendly environment and there are boundless opportunities such as playing in weekly matches, performing in a variety of musical ensembles and taking to the stage in a purpose built theatre. Come and see us at any time to meet our eager young learners and experience the unique buzz of our wonderfully welcoming school!

L
ast month we welcomed another teenager into the house as our second son turned thirteen. How did they grow up so fast, these boy-men towering over me? I worry about my ability to steer them along the path to a happy and successful adulthood while loosening the reigns at the same time and occasionally long for the simpler, if exhausting, times of their early childhood. Nowadays, there is constant showering, bottom-less appetites, loud rap music, banter and bolshiness. But they are also great company, make me laugh and explain loads of stuff to me that I don’t understand. When I’m feeling exasperated by dirty socks stuffed between sofa cushions or crisp packets on in their brains - the bit that connects everything together and helps them plan and be organized - is still work in progress. I feel lucky that my two teenage sons are sporty. While by no means a panacea for all bad behavior, it provides an outlet for pent-up energy, provides some all-important role models, boosts their self-esteem and, hopefully, makes them less likely to get into drugs and other dodgy things. Parenting teens is a balancing act, setting boundaries but with room to explore – it’s only natural for them to want independence and take risks. We punished the pilfering of a bottle of Bacardi found under the sixteen year-old’s bed, but were supportive when he was disciplined at school for ‘associating with smokers’ (we were impressed he had made the choice not to join in). We chat and share news but I’m aware of the fact that they need more privacy now. Meeting girlfriends is fun (I like that they’re liked) and we try to emphasise the need to be respectful and sensible - “How would you want your sister to be treated?” we ask. I’m looking forward to meeting the men they’ll soon become and hope that we are getting the preparation right most, even if not all, of the time. Alix Austen, Sub Editor & mother of 3 sons

he South Downs have just become the home of a cycling club with a difference! Originally from Petersfield but covering Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex; Pedal 2 Pedal caters for cyclists of all ages and abilities. The club was established by cross country mountain bike racer and British Cycling coach Hannah Attenburrow. Pedal 2 Pedal offers a mixture of junior cycling courses aimed to get kids riding safely and confidently, in addition to a junior mountain biking academy which is the only one of its kind in the South East of England and women's specific coaching, training and workshops. There are also new junior courses starting this Summer for young riders too. These fundamentals of cycling for young riders aged between 6-10 years old, will introduce them to techniques needed to become better, safer cyclists. Including balance, braking and gear selection. The course will be running from The Petersfield School starting on Monday 8th June between 5 -6 pm for six weeks. More dates also available in July. For young riders who are interested in riding off-road Pedal 2 Pedal offers a mountain biking progression course to develop mountain bike techniques like dealing with varying surfaces, cornering, braking effectively and dealing with obstacles. This course is suitable for young riders who have already got a little experience riding off-road on tracks, forest paths and fields. Courses are running in June and August for different age groups from 7 to 16 years old. Hannah said: "I decided to start coaching because I wanted to help inspire more people to try mountain biking. Cycling is a fantastic sport as it improves your health, can be used to get you from a to b and the best thing is you can go to some stunning parts of the country which you can’t reach by car and that take a long time to reach by foot. The joy of mountain biking to me is being out in the countryside having a great adventure. Why not come and join us?" The academy caters for all levels of rider aged 6 – 16, who want to join a progressive British Cycling affiliated club with a fun atmosphere where the emphasis is on team spirit and challenging your ability. rocodile Crossing II is the newest addition to Moors Valley Country Park’s play trail with twelve unique sculptures trail. Alongside balance beams, stepping logs and an Indiana Jones style rickety bridge, it features a huge crocodile’s head! Other play structures include ‘the nest’, a six metre high grouping of giant wooden nests linked by tunnels, a ‘snake pit’ where kids slide inside giant snakes and even a Russian inspired musical tree house. There is the option to divert to the Tree Top Trail half way round, this is a 5 metre high and 200 metre long wooden walkway into the trees offering a great bird’s eye view. ocally based Personal Development Coach Lis Allen has been busy over the years, bringing up four daughters around a role of jobs from producer, broadcaster, trainer and motivational speaker. Recently Lis decided to get more vocal and seek out likeminded women and mothers to bare all. Metaphorically speaking that is, with her controversially titled show the 'Vagina Dialogues'. The show does not discuss what you would think but the trials and tribulations women face in work and at home. Lis says: 'Bringing women together to share and discuss their thoughts, has been hugely beneficial not only for me but for the women who come too. We laugh, we cry and we almost certainly learn alot from our fellow females." Just back from a tour down under, most of the 2015 shows have sold out however there is a new show date launched for July 14 at Herongate Leisure Ctr, Hungerford. Book now at lisallen.com

The girls and staff then took part in a sponsored exercise event with Ben teaching them 7 different exercises, from burpees to jumping lunges. The scheme, run by Sports for Schools, is designed to encourage young people to live a healthy life and enjoy physical activity to gain a sense of achievement and boost self-esteem. The sponsorship money raised is split to provide sports equipment for schools and support international athletes. Head of Sports, Jaci Langhorn, said, “It was such an inspirational day for our up and coming athletes here at Leaden Hall. ppleshaw St Peters C of E School's PTA have been fundraising for the yurt for some time now and in early May they launched the new learning facility with a fun day, storytelling and games. Julia Plank a spokesperson for the school said: "We are so lucky to have wonderful grounds here and the yurt will be an innovative, inspirational and engaging additional learning space for us. Taking lessons outdoors is a great way to spark creativity but the unpredictable weather means it is not always practical. The yurt will be a valuable space for enriching outdoor learning for everyone in school, also lending itself towards atmospheric story-telling and music." The school are hugely excited to be the only school in Hampshire to have a yurt!
