BIRCHBOX CRUSH

Fas hion FoieGr as .c om i s a must - r e ad b lo g for st yle an d tr ave l i n s p i r ation . we chat te d to th e woman b e h i n d i t – E mi ly J oh n ston – to f i n d o ut how s h e g ot starte d, as we ll as h e r top tr ave l ti p s !

What inspired Fashion Foie Gras? I wanted to start a conversation about fashion – I thought I’d put my obsession with knowing all that was happening in the industry to good use: FFG was born! Every tidbit of information I was given became a post and a way to share fashion news with the world as it happens. Now, it’s reached a level I couldn’t have anticipated – with each new reader I’m challenged to work harder and harder to deliver daily (sometimes hourly) updates on the blog.

Who are your beauty and style inspirations?

I find inspiration daily from my amazing friends and family, make-up artists I work with and stylists that show me the way on a regular basis. Plus, girls out and about in London who are always pushing the boundaries on trends, if not creating completely new ones!

What advice would you give your younger self? Don’t care so much about what other people think and work hard to do what you love, no matter what anyone says.

6

What’s next?

I honestly never know what’s coming next. For FFG, there is a site relaunch in the future. For now, however, I’ll keep churning out the news as fast as these little fingers will type!

,,

jet set tips What’s your dream holiday destination? Jumby Bay, Antigua. It’s pure paradise on earth. That being said, my heart is forever on the islands off the coast of South Carolina where my parents have a house. I’m headed there for the whole month of August, so readers will definitely be seeing a more sunny atmosphere on the blog!

How would you describe your holiday style?

Easy. It’s relaxed, laid back and comfortable. I’m obsessed with oversized kaftans, jean cut-offs or a

standard tank top over a bikini. I operate a no fuss policy when I’m in holiday mode.

What are your top packing tips?

Plan your outfits ahead of time. I used to throw loads of stuff in my suitcase and sort it out when I arrived. HUGE mistake! Plan and try on every outfit – from shoes to earrings – and pack the outfits together in the case so they can be accessed easily. I also snap pics these days to remember what I’ve put together. BY BETH SQUIRES

Birchbox | the Mag

I remember thinking the fashion world was completely inaccessible and believing people when they reinforced that thought. Eventually I decided to try to find a way in, no matter how much work it took.

My r ecen t Back To Basics sk i ncare se ri es on o ur b lo g (b lo g . birchb ox .c o.uk) was just anoth e r sign that I ’ m a s e r io us s k incar e ob sessive. So, whe n I di sc ove r a ne w brand that actual ly wor ks , I ge t e xcited. An d whe n I ge t to say the nam e of i t i n a F r e nch ac ce n t I ge t très excited ! My journey with Blanc Cachemire began when Malvina – an editor from our French office – packed her Blanc Cachemire Day Cream on a trip to London. I was drawn to the chic jar and my inner magpie flew out! I probed, sniffed and swatched and asked if she’d send me some when she was back in Paris. I’ve been hooked ever since. 100% natural ingredients are used in a high-tech way to provide a gentle approach to anti-ageing. The smoothing proteins found in cashmere fibres are carefully mixed with active ingredients including falun – a millennial sediment with high concentrations of calcium and silicon – at the French Laboratoire Naturascience. These work in unison to encourage quicker cell regeneration and tighter, firmer skin.

CRÈME DE JOUR PROTECTRICE is the product that caught my eye. After using it for a week, I brought it to our brand director Antony’s attention and we knew we had to introduce you to it. This lightweight day cream is a beaut – it absorbs quickly, sits happily under foundation and has a lovely slightly fruity scent. Plus, it works!

You can also pair it with the equally gorgeous night cream – Crème De Nuit. It has a slightly thicker formula that leaves your skin super-nourished when you wake. The Lait Démaquillant is a luxurious cleansing milk that provides a gentle but effective cleanse and works best with Eau De Cachemire, a toning water packed with antioxidants for a thorough cleanse. J’adore! And I think you will too. BY GRACE GARGINI

Dietary fibre aids digestion, keeps you feeling full and helps to remove toxins. In beauty terms, that means healthier looking skin from the inside, out. 20% of each chia seed is protein and they contain all eight amino acids. These help your body in multiple ways, from building muscles to strengthening your hair, skin and nails. 60ml almond milk 1 chia shot (or 8g chia seeds) A handful of your favourite berries 1 tsp honey (or to taste) A pinch of cinnamon to taste 1. Mix together all ingredients and refrigerate overnight. 2. Yes, really. You’re done! 3. Enjoy!

teriyaki tofu stir-fry (serves 4)

I really love tofu because of its mild flavour – it picks up whatever you mix with it. The high protein content means that it’s a great alternative when you feel like you’ve eaten too much meat. 1 tbsp vegetable oil 2 tsps sesame oil 1 onion, cut into thin wedges 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 400g firm tofu, cut into 1cm fingers 400g pak choi, leaves separated and cut in half 180g broccolini, halved 150g sugar snaps 4 tbsps teriyaki sauce 2 tbsps sweet chilli sauce 1 tbsp black chia seeds 1. Heat oil in a large frying pan or wok and gently stir-fry onion, garlic and tofu for four minutes. Remove and keep warm. 2. Add green vegetables to the pan and stir-fry for two to three minutes. Stir in sauces, return tofu to pan and add chia seeds. Continue to cook for two minutes. Serve at once with noodles or rice if desired. 3. Voilà! BY aleksandra mikolajczyk

your skin for foundation. RMK’s Make-Up Base is a lightweight lotion that smoothes and hydrates the skin – it really increases the life of your foundation too.

2. Next, apply your base – RMK’s Creamy

STAY

I checked into a newly-refurbished room at the Avon Gorge Hotel, set in the lovely area of Clifton. Favourite things? The flowery wallpaper, comfy bed and stunning views of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s famous Clifton Suspension Bridge! It’s definitely worth a visit even if you’re not staying there – downstairs there’s a pub and a restaurant serving up delicious food and drinks and the view from the terrace is what hazy summer nights were made for.

SPA Owner Mark Thwaites warmly welcomed me to Lido – an oasis of a place, including a pool, spa and restaurant, tucked away on an unassuming street. Put it this way, if I lived in Bristol I’d spend every spring/summer afternoon there. I was lucky enough to enjoy a truly relaxing and revitalising Classic Lido Massage courtesy of spa manager Brad, as well as a delicious lunch. I also dropped into Harvey Nichols for a manicure at the Champagne Nail Bar – you could make it a one-stop shop as they also have a Strip Wax Bar and a Blink Brow Bar too!

SOCIALISE

I barely scratched the surface of shopping in Bristol during my short visit – there’s a largely pedestrianised Shopping Quarter which means there are so many places to spend your hard-earned cash. To find more independent traders, head over to the famed St Nicholas Market for everything from clothes to food! For coffee and a cake in comfy surroundings with a vintage feel, head to The Birdcage – a cafe/vintage clothing store decorated beautifully. I also visited Friska’s Queens Road location for a much-needed frappé and a browse of the books and curiosities on offer. During my first night in town I ate delicious Indian food at Thali Cafe. (Not in Bristol? They’ll be hitting a festival near you this summer!) On my second evening in the city, I found Start The Bus was the perfect place for tasty food, live music and a casual atmosphere. Rocotillo’s diner provide tasty Oreo milkshakes and typical(ly delicious!) diner fare, and for fine dining, you can’t beat Glassboat’s divine menu and waterside setting. Fancy the setting but want a drink or two instead of food? Try The Apple – they serve around 40 ciders in their bar-on-a-boat. Perfect in the summer sunshine! BY BETH SQUIRES
