COLLECTION COLLECTIONS about the book

This book named “Collection / Collections is an assignment from the school Sint-Lucas Antwerp for the graphic design profession in the second year. The students were instructed to look for collectors who had an interesting collection. In this they were completely free. The only requirement was that the collection had a link with Antwerp. After a lot of research into various collections I finally found Jan Van Reeth, an old classmate of mine. This young man has been passionated about the doings of David Bowie for a long time, and during that time he gathered a great collection. This book is a representation of this wonderful gathering of beautiful things about David Bowie.

who’s david bowie David Bowie was born David Robert Jones in Brixton, South London. He developed an interest in music early on and began playing the saxophone aged 13. At 16, he started a career as a commercial artist, singing and playing with rock bands in his spare time. By 1966, Jones had recorded singles with three different groups and decided to set out on his own as a solo act. He decided on the stage name, David Bowie, to avoid confusion with Davy Jones (of pop group ‘The Monkees’). After recording an unsuccessful solo album, Bowie dropped out of the music business for a spell, and began to study mime. In 1969, he formed his own mime troupe feathers. Neither was commercially successful, so Bowie signed a deal to record another album, which included the offbeat ‘Space Odyssey’. Bowie’s next album, 1970s ‘The Man Who Sold the World’, represented a move toward a harder rock sound and, in 1972, he scored his breakthrough with ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust’ and ‘The Spiders From Mars’, a concept album about a sexually ambiguous rock star from outer space.

“I don’t know where I am going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.” Released as the glam rock scene was beginning to peak, Ziggy Stardust made Bowie a full-fledged superstar, in both England and the United States. Bowie was to become as famous for his campy cross-dressing and different coloured eyes, (the result of a schoolyard fight that left one pupil permanently enlarged) as for his dramatic sound. In 1976, director Nicolas Roeg cast Bowie in his first leading role, as an unhappy alien who becomes a famous industrialist and pop star, as he tries to find a way home in ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’. The story seemed made-to-order for Bowie’s public persona, and he gave a fine performance, which helped the film become a modest box-office success. In 1983, Bowie’s album ‘Let’s Dance’ brought him to new heights of commercial success and his next major film, Nagisa Oshima’s ‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence’, found him receiving top billing for what was essentially a supporting role. He also recorded music for ‘Hero’ and ‘The Falcon’ and ‘The Snowman’. In 1986, Bowie scored one of his rare leading roles in a mainstream film, when he starred in the big-budget fantasy ‘Labyrinth’. He also appeared as Pontius Pilate in Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’.In 1997, David Bowie broke new ground, yet again, with the Internet-only release of his single ‘Telling Lies.’ Having completed a world tour in 1997, David Bowie has proven himself to be a true music industry survivor. In 1999, he recorded a duet with Brian Molko on the Placebo track ‘Without You I’m Nothing’ before he returned back to the studio to record an album. On 15 August 2001, Alexandria Zahra Jones was born. She was the first child of Bowie’s with his second wife Iman Abdulmajid, who he married in 1992. In October that year, he opened the ‘Concert for New York City’, which was held to benefit the victims of the 11 September attacks in the US. In 2002, he released the album ‘Heathen’, which was followed, Another album and tour called ‘Reality’ followed, which became the best-selling tour of 2003. In 2004, he was performing in Oslo when a lollipop hit him in the eye and a week later he suffered chest pains, which was later diagnosed as a blocked artery, leading Bowie to need heart surgery. He cancelled the last 15 dates of his tour. Following his heart surgery, Bowie has slowed down and only makes one-off appearances on stage. He took part in a duet of ‘Changes’ for the 2004 film ‘Shrek 2’. He also performed on stage with Arcade Fire in 2005 and made a radio commercial with Snoop Dogg the same year. Bowie was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award on 8 February 2006 before announcing in April that he would be taking a year break from making music and from touring. However, on 29 May he made a surprise appearance at David Gilmour’s concert at the Royal Albert Hall. His performances were recorded and released as a CD. In 2008, he performed on Scarlett Johansson’s album of Tom Waits covers called ‘Anywhere I Lay My Head’. A double album of performances from Bowie’s 2003 tour was released

INTERVIEW the man behind the collection Tell me more about yourself. My name is Jan Van Reeth. I am a 20 year old student from Antwerp. In high school I studied publicity. After that I started studying graphic design at Sint-Lucas Antwerp, but after a few months I switched to webdesign. Furthermore, I keep myself busy with photography and personal graphic design projects. I am particularly passionate about the 60s and the 70s. Both the clothing, music, movies and lifestyle interest and inspire me. Music is one of my biggest passions. What created your passion for David Bowie? I discovered David Bowie by my uncle. He is also very passionated about Bowie and he was the one who introduced me to him. Here by everything got started. Because of the variation in Bowie’s music I listened almost only too his albums. When I met him, I listened mainly to Soul, but my interest was quickly spread to other styles. Since then I never stopped with listening to his music. When did you start your collection? In the summer of 2009 I got my first album of David Bowie from an ex girlfriend. There is so much more a personal touch and feeling when you grab a record an play a song. I couldn’t wait to buy me some more vinyl. When I saw my small collection growing I just wanted more and more. Now that a few years has passed us by, my collection is starting to look like one. What makes David Bowie for you so special? Especially his “chameleon attitude” appealed to me. Bowie re-invented himself continuously. He takes new images and characters. In fact David Bowie is a collector of personalities. What I also like about the musical work of Bowie are his several genres. This keeps everything from him fascinating and interesting.

a collection with a deep passion Does David Bowie inspire you in your daily life and how does he influence you? In the past, Bowie inspired me very strongly on graphic plan. I am also looking at his attitude in life and thinking ways. I try to apply them myself. For David Bowie friendship was very important, especially his friendship with Iggy Pop. This friendship is very similar to the friendship between myself and my best friend Gilles. Furthermore, you could also say that my way of dressing and my hairstyle resembles too David Bowie.

24

Do you already have plans to further expand your collection? Sure. Since I have all the basics, I am concentrating more on the rarer things, things like my box “stationtostation”. Beyond that, I am considering to get myself a “Ziggy” haircut. Is there anything from David Bowie what you don’t have yet, but would love to have? My ultimate dream is to experience a performance from him. Unfortunately, this will never happen. When I didn’t knew him that well he was working on his last tour. He did not even completed the tour because of his illness. Since then, he stopped performing. A very sad thing for the music world and for collectors and Bowie lovers like myself. Finally, how did you come to these collectibles? Did you invested a lot of money in your collection? Actually it could be worse. Because all of the people who are close to me know that I am very passionated by Bowie, the choice for a birthday gift or Christmas gif is easy. I have received a big part of my collection from my beloved friends and family. Personally I think I have roughly spended around € 400 on my collection. This includes mainly records. Everything I’ve bought myself comes from the city of Antwerp. I am a regular customer of the record store “Record Collector” in the Lange Koepoortstraat and the record store “Tune Up” on the Melkmarkt. Furthermore, I always look for new pieces and collectibles in stores where you do not immediately expect to find them.

the end of Bowie This article describes a very sad moment in the history of music. In the middle of his European tour David Bowie decides to stop performing and quits his tour. He lets the world know that he will never go on a tour again. The cause of this major and abrupt decision is David Bowie’s illness. The one thing Jan wants so bad, he sadly will never get.
