KIMBOLTON SCHOOL

6 With small classes and a friendly, caring atmosphere, Kimbolton Preparatory School has the feel of a village school yet the facilities and opportunities that only a bigger one can offer. Its pupils receive plenty of individual attention but have enough classmates to develop a wide circle of friends. They cover the National Curriculum and more besides: modern foreign languages, weekly swimming lessons from age five, an extensive programme of trips and visits in support of their classroom-based learning and a huge range of activities at lunchtimes and after-school. ‘Kim Club’ provides before and after-school care for all ages. As children progress through the School, formal sports coaching and inter-school fixtures are introduced. Music is taught from Reception onwards and individual instrumental lessons from specialist visiting music teachers are available once a child is ready. There are various ensembles which regularly form the School’s orchestra for formal and informal concerts. Life at Kimbolton Preparatory School is busy, hugely rewarding and great fun. The academic results are excellent but the School’s approach is one of balance so that children are stimulated and challenged in many different ways. Kimbolton Preparatory School caters for children from ages four to eleven. Almost all of them progress, with their friends, to Kimbolton School for their secondary education where the ethos continues. The Prep and Senior Schools are located at opposite ends of Kimbolton School’s stunning 120-acre campus which includes extensive parkland and the historic Kimbolton Castle, the former residence of the Dukes of Manchester and once home to Queen Katharine of Aragon. (Please see our advert on page 2 for details of our Open Day and contact information).

What can you do when your child is ill?

by Susan Elliot-Wright

With so many bugs around at the moment, many parents feel they’re rarely out of the GP’s surgery. But as well as medical treatment, your child needs to feel as comfy as possible. If she’s congested or sniffly, a few drops of eucalyptus in warm water placed near the bed will help her breath more easily. Sometimes a change of air can help, so wrap her up and take her outside for a few minutes.

Give her plenty to drink – warmed drinks are more soothing for a sore throat. Don’t worry if she’s not hungry, just keep offering easy-to-eat foods like soup, scrambled eggs or fruit and yoghurt.

Her temperature may fluctuate. If she’s feverish, sponge her down with lukewarm water. Keep clothing to a minimum – preferably light, natural fabrics.

If she has earache, help her to sit upright. This eases the pain by relieving pressure in the middle ear and allowing the tubes in the inner ear to drain.

Sleep is essential to help our bodies fight infection. If she can’t sleep, give her a warm bath and dress her in clean nightclothes. Clean bedlinen will smell fresh and feel cool, especially if she has a fever, and a few drops of lavender oil (if she’s over six months) on a plumped up pillow will help her to drift off.

Keep rooms well ventilated in summer. In winter, wet washing on the

radiators will prevent the air from becoming dry. A sick

child needs to be near you, so make up a bed in the lounge or kitchen so she can see you. Carry babies in a sling if possible. As she recovers, gradually wind down the nursing and find gentle activities to entertain her and to help her get back to normal.

Why do we get a kick out of every class we run? It’s fun. Our coaches have fun teaching, the children have fun learning new skills and our parents relax and enjoy a friendly chat. So whether you’re nurturing a future star or just want a happier, healthier child – why not sign up and have a ball with us! APPROVED FOOTBALL TRAINING FOR KIDS FROM 2 YEARS TO 7TH BIRTHDAY.

Where learning’s a ball Call 609413 Call 05602 07976 179899 www.littlekickers.co.uk

A new way to introduce youngsters to the beautiful game has kicked off in Peterborough. Little Kickers provide pre-school children (18 months - 7 years) with a fun, positive introduction to football. The programme was developed by FA qualified coaches and nursery teachers with input from child health specialists. Each class is run by 2 coaches and enables the children to develop football skills whilst encouraging the development of Early Learning Skills. We feel our classes are different from other football classes because they are specifically tailored to suit the development needs of such young children. It’s probably worth reiterating that Little Kickers isn’t about finding the next generation of Lampards, Gerrards or Rooneys. Our sole goal is to provide an informal, footy-themed environment where children can begin to learn essential, elementary life skills, (confidence, co-ordination, control and camaraderie) in a friendly, fun-packed, pressure-free environment that stimulates curious young minds. With our 7,000th child recently signed up and 528 classes sprinkled throughout the country, we truly believe that in our own small way, we’re providing a positive introduction to sport and an energetic solution to a more health-conscious lifestyle. Classes are run in Peterborough and Stamford with more being planned for the region. How can you tell if your child has asthma?

by Susan Elliot-Wright

According to the British Medical Journal, around one in 10 children in UK have asthma, so you’re bound to be concerned if your child is coughing and wheezing. Wheezing affects one in seven under fives, but it can be due to other illnesses such as viral infections. So how can you tell if it’s asthma? Asthma can be difficult to diagnose, especially in younger children. It’s thought that a family history of asthma, eczema or allergies, combined with environmental factors, influences whether a child develops asthma, so your GP will ask about family history, whether you or your partner smoke, and whether your child’s symptoms are triggered by certain situations or substances. It’s a good idea to keep a record of the symptoms and what seems to trigger them. Look out for: • Coughing, especially after exercise and at night. This is the most common symptom of

• Breathlessness or gasping – narrowed air passages can make it difficult to breathe. Your child may seem inactive, or may ask to be carried more than usual as a result. If your child’s skin starts to turn blue – you may notice this around the lips or tongue first – call an ambulance or get him to hospital urgently. If your child is over six, the doctor may ask him to blow into a tube called a peak flow meter, which measures lung capacity, and can help the diagnosis. It’s difficult to explain this procedure to younger children, so some doctors prescribe ‘reliever’ medication to see if it improves their symptoms. This involves an inhaler linked to a plastic chamber or mask, which can be held to the child’s face to help them breathe in naturally.
