Stop your child from choking
by Susan Elliot-Wright
+ ld ss, D o e. m
02
Babies and young children constantly put things in their mouths – it’s one of the ways they learn about the world. But in children under five, there is a high risk of choking. Marbles, beads, coins and toys with small parts are all possible causes of choking, but the majority of choking accidents are caused by food. This is partly because young children have a very narrow airway. Also, babies and toddlers are still learning how to chew and swallow, and in particular, how to time these actions with their breathing. They’re most likely to choke on foods that are small, round, hard or stringy. Some foods should be avoided altogether, but others can be prepared in a way that makes them less likely to cause a problem.
Avoid altogether: Nuts – especially peanuts, one of the most common causes of choking. Boiled sweets – usually round and hard, they
can easily be swallowed whole, blocking the windpipe. Popcorn – because this is small with sharp, irregular edges, and is also very dry, it’s a common cause of choking. Raisins, sultanas – best not given to the under twos, but fairly safe for older children if soft and moist, or cooked in cakes or bread.
Prepare carefully: Hot dogs, sausages – one of the most common choking foods. Cut in two lengthwise and then into bite-size pieces. Apples, pears, carrots, swede – most kids love to snack on hard fruits and vegetables. Serve chopped into small pieces, grated or cooked until soft. Celery – remove the stringy outer layer and cut into small pieces. Green beans – remove the stringy part and make sure beans are properly cooked and cut up before serving. Peanut butter – can act like cement in the throat. Spread thinly and serve with a drink. Don’t let them eat it on its own.

Jolly Tots review of StoryBox magazines
by Ruby Speechley
StoryBox is ideal for children aged 3 – 6 years. The quality of these 52-page magazines is outstanding. When you receive one, you realise what good value they really are. For a start, they look and feel more like a picture book you’d pay around six pounds for in a shop. And StoryBox really is ‘more than a book.’ It has fun magazine content which sits well alongside the full length, beautifully illustrated story. And don’t worry, you won’t be throwing these magazines away! They will soon become firm favourites on your child’s bookshelf where they’ll come back to them again and again. A regular feature is ‘Wonder with Whizkid’ which covers some big questions we’re all curious about, such as ‘Why don’t the stars fall on us?’ and ‘Why do nettles sting?’ Each topic is presented in an easy to follow format. Whizkid (a cute little character) navigates you through the answers to these burning questions. SamSam is the StoryBox cartoon hero (which can now be found as an animated cartoon on the TV channel Pop!) Children love humour and SamSam provides plenty of it. Other regulars include another comic strip ‘Polo,’ a page of poetry, ‘Time for a Rhyme’ and ‘Animal World’ which focuses on a different creature every issue, for example, the Komodo Dragon. It gives interesting facts in short, easy to understand sentences, alongside colourful photos. StoryBox even has games and puzzles to play too. A gift subscription makes a long-lasting and unique gift for any child because the excellent content feeds their growing curiosity about the world and gives them plenty of things to do and learn. When my son went to stay with his grandparents recently, what did he choose to take with him? His big pile of StoryBox magazines! For more details about how to subscribe for a year (ten issues) go to www.bayard-magazines.co.uk. Prices for the UK are £39.00 for one year (only £3.90 per issue) or £49.50 if you would also like to receive a CD every two months. Payment by Direct Debit is £9.75 per quarter. ‘AdventureBox’ magazines are also available for children aged 6 – 9 years and ‘DiscoveryBox’ is for children aged 9 – 12 years. www.bayard-magazines.co.uk

10 ways to cut the cost of having a baby by Susan Elliot-Wright
20
When you’re pregnant and spending every lunch hour wandering dewy-eyed around baby departments packed with gorgeous things, it’s easy to see how you can spend a fortune even before your baby is born, never mind the cost of the first year. But it is possible to kit your baby out without breaking the bank. Here’s how: Talk to other mums about what items they found most useful, and what just stayed in the cupboard. For example, you probably don’t need a crib as well as a cot. And while a Moses basket might be very pretty as well as being useful for transporting your baby, a good car seat – which is essential – will probably do just as well. Before you shell out a fortune on the latest cot or high-tech buggy, consider buying second-hand. Ebay will probably be your first option, but don’t forget the local paper, cards in the newsagent’s window and of course car boot sales. You can often find these items, as well as highchairs, playpens and so on, in excellent condition for much less than you’d pay in the shops. Some National Childbirth Trust (NCT) groups organise sales of nearly new baby equipment – and they’re a great place to meet other mums and swap information and experience. You can order an information pack online. Visit their website at www.nctpregnancyandbabycare.org. When it comes to buying a car seat, though, you should always
buy new. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) warns that a second-hand car seat may not comply with current safety standards, or may even have been involved in an accident (not all damage will show), so it’s just not worth taking a chance. For more car safety advice, visit
www.rospa.com If you’re only going to use something once or twice - a travel cot, for example – do you really need to buy one, or could you borrow from a friend. If you’re buying new, shop around. Prices vary enormously and you can make good savings by simply spending the morning on the internet or searching through various catalogues to compare prices.
There are hundreds of baby books and manuals on the market – borrow from the library or from friends rather than buying new. And check out all those baby magazines you bought while you were pregnant - they may well contain the information you’re looking for. For clothes, go to car boot sales. Babies grow out of things so quickly that it’s easy to pick up good quality clothes that have only been worn once or twice. Boot sales are also great for baby baths, fireguards, changing tables, slings, highchairs, playpens, toys, etc. Invest in a blender so you can make your own healthy babyfood and freeze it. Using real terry nappies can work out cheaper than using disposables, especially if you can use them again for your next baby. Childcare – use relatives and friends where possible and join a babysitting circle so you can return the favour rather than paying an hourly rate. Resist the temptation to buy designer clothes – she can’t read the label, she’ll grow out of them in no time, and they all look the same with baby rice smeared down the front! FUN ALL DAY, DAY DA Y, EVERYDAY, EVERYDA EVERYDA YDAY Y, RAIN OR SHINE ~ FREE HOT DRINK WITH THIS AD Shepreth Wildlife Park is going tiger crazy in 2010 With the opening of their brand new Ringo’s Play Barn, staff at Shepreth will be making the most of its function room for the animal parties planned for the year ahead. As well as the award winning ‘Tiger Day’ on 4th August, Shepreth Wildlife Park will also be hosting a series of fun filled events, including the opening of ‘Bunny City’ and their traditional four-day Easter egg hunt over the Easter weekend, lots of primate fun and games at the annual
Lemur Funday on 3rd June and the ‘Tiger swimathon’ in the Autumn. The animal fun doesn’t stop there either, with an influx of new arrivals set to explore their new surroundings at the wildlife park, including Azara’s agouti, who will be joining the Red-bellied tamarins on Monkey Island, along with four Little egrets making friends in the new ibis exhibit, and a male snowy owl to pair up with the resident female. But by far the most exciting news this Spring is the expansion of the Shepreth Wildlife Park ‘Polecat Breeding Programme’ in the Native Species Wood. After the successful release of last years kits back into the wild, a new breeding pair has just joined the programme, extending the project throughout four of the park’s existing enclosures. The keepers at Shepreth now wait in anticipation for lots more babies this summer!
Finally, Animal Manager, Rebecca Willers, will be swimming her 12km tiger swimathon on 8th September, in preparation for the big Channel attempt in 2011, all in aid of saving tigers in the wild. So there couldn’t be a better time to visit Shepreth Wildlife Park, especially with the recent launch of their cost-saving ‘Season Tickets’, re-vamped Adoption Packages and extended Animal Experience portfolio, all available from their information packed website at: www.sheprethwildlifepark.co.uk.
