Playday Nursery has been running since 1999 and was registered to care for 13 children at any one time. We have now expanded our setting to provide care and education to up to 40 children aged between 0 to 8 years old. “We are very excited with the prospect of moving forward and the challenge to become a larger setting whilst still maintaining the atmosphere of a family unit, said Rasila Panchal,

manager of Playday Nursery. “Our provision will provide modern facilities for the children and the staff as well as making it suitable for special needs users. We have a duty to ensure that our provision complies with the learning and development requirements, safeguarding and promoting children’s welfare requirements (employing suitable people, providing suitable premises, environment and equipment; efficient organisation and documentation). “I am delighted with the chance to expand our childcare service. The creation of additional childcare at Playday Nursery will significantly impact the lives of parents and children. Parents will have access to affordable, high quality childcare and the children will have exciting, fun activities to take part in which will develop their self-esteem and social skills in a safe and stimulating environment, giving them a chance to thrive. “The expansion will enable us to provide separate rooms for the different age groups and provide children with a safe and secure environment in which to interact and explore rich and diverse learning and development opportunities. “During school holidays we provide care for children of primary school age depending on the availability of places.

Summertime Fun at Thurleigh Farm & Adventure Playground With six weeks of the school summer holidays looming, there is no scope for the children to be bored down at Thurleigh Farm & Adventure Playground. Commencing with a week of mini beast detectives from Saturday 23rd July, the farm is running its six week activity programme of different weekly themes. Let the littlies explore the woods in search of bugs and creepy crawlies before turning your hand to wizarding with a craft week in honour of the latest Harry Potter release. Early August takes on a Gruffalo twist followed by a week of knights & princesses and then pirate mania. Finally, not forgetting the sporting accolades of next summer, the farm will be running its own kids Olympics – so come on down and get into training! Following on from its success over Easter, Chris Welbourn from “Animal Encountersâ€? will be in residence every Wednesday. An opportunity for visitors to see and learn more about the antics of a tarantula, get up close to a snake or cuddle a hedgehog. All this plus the Farm’s usual holiday timetable of tractor trailer, pony & fire engine rides plus the indoor and outdoor play areas and animals. The farm operates an all inclusive entrance price of just ÂŁ8 per child (ÂŁ6.50 for the 3’s and under) and ÂŁ6 an adult. Alternatively there is a very attractive 3 month membership which equates to the cost of two visits.

Teaching your baby to swim could save their life Summer’s just around the corner and the combination of holidays, sunshine, water and children is a seductive, but potentially lethal, mix. Drowning remains the third highest cause of accidental death among children in the UK, and 33% of child drownings occur in or near the home to children under six. Moreover, a recent study revealed that more under 5s know how to play a computer game than swim - so it’s vital to get your little one into a pool as soon as you can. With progressive training, even very young babies can be taught life saving skills, such as turning onto their backs or swimming to the nearest solid object following a sudden submersion. Swimming is one of the most complete and beneficial activities, as well as being one of the few things you can do from birth - as long as the water’s warm enough. Generally, however, babies start swimming at around six weeks, when their mums feel able to bring them. There’s no need to have taken your baby for their immunisations first, but if you have any concerns check out the NHS Choices website. If your baby was born premature, then you should consult your doctor beforehand – as you should if you have any other medical concerns. Swimming is excellent for stimulating your baby’s eating and sleeping patterns. The multi- award winning Water Babies course teaches using voice commands, and learning to respond to these is excellent for your baby’s mental development. Lessons last half an hour, and although they might look very gentle, each provides your baby with a complete physical work out – exercising and strengthening lots of muscles they’d never even find on land! It’s also fantastic for strengthening the bond between the two of you. Lots of mums (and dads) find that becoming confident in water makes them more confident on land. Others say the best thing is finding an activity to do together that they and their baby both adore. With an emphasis on having fun, lessons are generally very sociable occasions and often your session will extend beyond the pool as you and the rest of your class move to the nearest café for coffee and cake – or an ice-cream in the park - whilst (blissfully) most of your babies doze. For more information on Water Babies classes in Buckden, Colmworth, Caldecote and Cambridge, call Debi Hogston on 01933 651790 or 07814059594, email: chasebubba@waterbabies.co.uk or visit www.waterbabies.co.uk.

Eating out with under fives
by Susan Elliot-Wright
When we take our little ones to a restaurant, we hope they’ll chat pleasantly over the meal, display excellent table manners and sit politely at the table without complaining that they’re bored. But when eating out is a new experience, it can sometimes be a challenge to get them to even sit still for ten minutes. So how can you make eating out with your kids an enjoyable and rewarding activity? Eating at home is obviously less formal than eating out, so explain that we behave differently when we’re in a restaurant because dining out is a special occasion where we can dress up and enjoy nice food together in attractive surroundings. Have a practice run at home. Lay the table with a cloth, nice cutlery, candles and flowers, then dim the lights and put on some soft music. Instead of one main meal, serve three smaller courses, soup, perhaps, followed by a main course then fruit or ice-cream. You could even pretend to be the waitress! They’ll love the ritual and it’ll get them used to sitting at the table for longer than usual. Make sure everyone’s on best behaviour – don’t let dad slurp his soup and launch his peas across the room with his fork! Start with child-friendly establishments such as pizza restaurants with waited service so they can get used to ordering food from a menu and
saying please and thank you to staff. Next, try family orientated restaurants such as the pub/steakhouse chains. Before long, they’ll be ready for more formal dining. Chinese, Indian and Italian restaurants often welcome children, but may not have the same family-friendly facilities as the big chains. Young children may get bored so, if the restaurant doesn’t already provide these, take some colouring or puzzle books to keep them occupied, and try not to let the meal drag on for too long. If your kids are well-behaved and happy, they’ll be a big hit with restaurant staff and other diners!
A taste of what’s on offer: The ‘children’s menu’ once meant a choice of sausages or chicken nuggets, but these days family-friendly restaurants offer increasingly appealing and varied kids menus:
Featured Restaurant: Brewers Fayre & Fun Factory (The Highwayman) Colmworth Business Park, St. Neots (see advert opposite). Choice of ten different mains from chicken dinner, Sunday roast and beef and onion pie to create your own pizza (all £3.99 - extra 50p for roast dinner available on Sunday’s only). Meal deal is £4.50 and includes a choice of four desserts. No age restriction on this menu.
Fayre & Square - Pick ‘n’ Mix menu £3.50, choice of four mains and four sides including omelete, burger, jacket potato and rice with beans or veg. Desserts from 99p. No age limit stated. Pizza Express – Piccolo Menu £6.25 for three courses and a drink. Mains include choice of pastas and pizzas served with side salad. Activity sheet provided. No age limit stated. Frankie and Benny’s – Menus for under 11s: Kids (£3.95) and Junior (£6.45) for main course and dessert. Mains include chicken, sausages, burgers, pizzas. Served with fries and beans, salad or veg. Activity pack provided. Organic babyfood available. Prezzo – Children’s Menu £4.95 for three courses and a drink. Mains include pizza, pasta and chicken. There must be one adult ordering a main meal for every two children’s meals ordered. No age limit stated. Harvester - Young Guests Menu (under 10s) £4.19 for main course – choice included steak, scampi, pasta, and risotto-stuffed mushroom – served with peas or beans, potatoes (baby new, jacket, mashed, wedges or fries) and unlimited salad. Call before you go to check whether they have high chairs, baby changing facilities etc. available to mums and dads.

How to choose your child’s first shoes by Liz Guarnaccia, Owner of Zebedee Shoes
Childrens feet are very so and can be easily manipulated into a shoe. It is as important as going to the den st to have your child’s feet measured regularly. It is also important that the child has well made shoes from natural materials with enough room for the toes to move around and grow freely. We have put together some frequently asked ques ons and answers for mums and dads. Q. Why wear shoes? A: The role of a shoe is to protect, and a foot to follow its shape. The look is of lesser importance that the fact that the child’s shoe “cooperates” with a child in all movements. A shoe needs to adapt to a foot rather than a foot to a shoe. Wearing shoes that are rigid, hard to bend and made of inadequate materials which imitate the adults’ shoes, is harmful for children’s feet. Inadequate shoes are often too short, too narrow, too low, too hard and can even have too high heels. Free movement in a shoe enables proper muscle operation, good blood circulation and proper
development. The cap at the front part of the shoe needs to be broad and high enough in order to provide sufficient spacing for toes. The sole needs to be soft so as to enable flexible walking and also to facilitate the work of the feet muscles.
Q. What shoes should we choose for our child? A: Children’s shoes need to be comfortable and functional. The material chosen for the production of shoes needs to be soft and natural – it should not harm the child’s foot. The inner material needs to absorb moistness, while the external material needs to repel it. These requirements are best met by top quality natural leather. Here at Zebedee we do our best to source these products for your children.
Q. Why do physicians stress the importance of correct shoes? A: Because shoes form an essential part of children’s garments – they guard the function of feet and enable their correct development.
Q. How can we be sure the shoes are the right size? A: Research shows that a large number of children wear inadequate size shoes. Very often they wear even up to three sizes smaller shoes than necessary, but sometimes they wear too large shoes. A shoe needs to be 6mm larger than the foot in it. Children’s feet are very soft and the bones do not fully form until a child is around 7 years of age so a small foot can be easily put into small shoes. Development is of key importance to the structure of the foot (tendons, bones, muscles) as well as final formation of feet and acquiring firmness last until the end of the period of growing.
Q. Can a shoe be too tight?= A: Of course! Children of the same age have feet of different lengths and breadths. The breadth of a shoe creates the same problem as the length of a shoe. Unhindered growth and development of small feet require a lot of space. Little feet and toes develop best when children walk on some uneven surface because there they have absolute freedom of movement which is necessary for the correct growth and development. By standing, jumping and running without any shoes on, leg muscles are strengthened, and this is a precondition for a healthy and tough child’s foot. The foot condition is best walking barefooted on natural elastic surfaces, such as sand, grass etc. Take your children’s shoes off as much as possible!

Q. When does a child need to be fitted with their first shoes?
is recommended to try and purchase shoes in the afternoon.
A: Do not rush to buy your child their first pair of shoes. Little feet are best developed without shoes. Forget about all the sales arguments about high, low, protective or any other kind of shoes. Your child will learn best to walk, run, and jump without wearing any shoes. I always recommend that the child can walk the length of the room.

NOT GUILTY! BRITISH PARENTS LET KIDS WATCH TV ‘GUILT FREE’ New ten point plan for parents and new quality programme for children launched.
Almost all parents in the UK (93%) let their young children watch television, according to findings of a new poll of 1,000 parents of children aged 2-6 years. Contrary to popular belief, seven out of ten parents do not feel guilty about allowing their children to watch TV. Of those parents, 42% think TV is a great way for kids to learn but only 16% always watch with their kids for ‘bonding time’, with 25% using TV as a ‘babysitter’. The poll was carried out to mark the launch of a new programme for children of pre-school age – Raa Raa the Noisy Lion – and a new ten point plan for parents on TV Time, devised by experts to mark the Hello campaign, 2011 national year of communication. For television to be a valuable learning opportunity, experts recommend that parents co-view with their children. This means watching programmes that are age appropriate and specifically designed for children with parents

joining in and commenting on the programme to spark off conversation and introduce new words. The findings however highlight that more than half of parents with pre-schoolers (54%) allow their children to watch ‘adult’ programmes with Eastenders, The X Factor and Coronation Street being voted the most common for parents to co-view with their kids. Nearly 78% of parents’ claim the two hours their children spend watching TV each day is done alone. 66% of parents don’t know the characters or storylines from the shows their kids are watching and when parents do co-view approximately 20% sit in silence with their children. Very few (15%) are using TV programmes as a ‘conversation starter’ when the TV is turned off. Wendy Lee, spokesperson for the Hello campaign with over 25 years
experience working in speech and language therapy says; “Parents play a crucial role in supporting their children’s communication development. This survey highlights they are not suffering from ‘guilt overload’ but there are areas where parents would benefit from more information and advice. Quality TV programmes like Raa Raa the Noisy Lion can provide a good starting point for face to face interaction, conversation and play and we encourage parents to grab the ‘communication opportunity’ to co-view with their child. “TV can be used as a fantastic opportunity to bring children’s favourite characters and shows to life beyond the box as well. Chatting about characters, making up stories and even acting out adventures can help parents to develop their child’s language and communication. Today, we are publishing a new ten point plan for parents with pre-schoolers with simple and fun tips to ensure TV time becomes talk time.” The Hello campaign aims to make children and young people’s communication development a national priority and is championing Raa Raa the Noisy Lion as a quality television

programme designed for 2 - 4 year olds. The new series explores children’s communication skills through the use of Raa Raa’s 4 Rs – repetition, rhyme, rhythm and retelling. Controller of CBeebies Kay Benbow says: “We’re delighted that Raa Raa and his friends are joining us on CBeebies and will help us continue to encourage children to develop their communications skills. We were pleased to see the results of this survey which supports what we’ve always believed that, used appropriately; our programmes can aid children’s development and learning.” The poll found that only 7% of parents in the country actually stop their children from watching any television. Surprisingly dads are much stricter than mums (12% as compared to 4%). The findings also suggest that parents in Scotland are much stricter than parents in Wales (12% as compared to 3%). Raa Raa’s adventures, narrated by Lorraine Kelly, is on CBeebies every weekday at 3.30pm and on CBeebies iPlayer. “I’m very excited to be involved with this adorable new show. Raa Raa the Noisy Lion is a hoot,” says Lorraine Kelly. “I love the idea of making learning fun for kids, and as 2011 is the National Year of Communication, this series is more relevant than ever!”

TEN POINT PLAN FOR PARENTS WITH PRE-SCHOOLERS ON TV TIME 2011 national year of communication To help parents plan their involvement: If you let your child watch TV, watch it with them (as much as possible). It is really important to always remember that children need quiet time where you turn off background noise and have time just to play. This is really important for listening and language development. When you do watch programmes make sure they are at the right level for your child – not too complicated or for older children (CBeebies for example is good for 2 - 4 year olds). Have fun and encourage your child to really engage with the programme. Join in with your child if there are familiar songs or rhymes– each episode of Raa Raa The Noisy Lion includes the 4 R’s (Rhyme, Rhythm, Repetition and Retelling), which provides a good opportunity for you to participate with your child. Make TV time ‘communication’ time. Briefly comment on what is happening in a programme to spark off a conversation or highlight something that is happening i.e. ‘Look at Raa Raa – he’s hiding’.
22:22
Page 21
Be sure to answer any questions children may ask – they might have lots! And talk about the programme afterwards – which bit they liked best and why. Tell them what you think. Pretend games are fantastic for children’s language and communication development. Why not make believe you are in a Jungle - make a den with an old blanket across a couple of chairs, use soft toys as the animals. You could even act out one of the adventures from shows like Raa Raa The Noisy Lion that you have just watched with your child adding in their imagination to create a whole new story. Remember not to put pressure on your children and give them the opportunity to communicate with you. Get down to their level and give them time to listen as well as talk. The most important thing for children is adults who listen and talk with them, alongside stimulating experiences and materials that give them opportunities to interact and play. Too much TV can get in the way of this, so it is important to try and get the right balance. For more information, visit www.raaraathenoisylion.com. If you at all concerned about your child’s communication development, log on to www.talkingpoint.org.uk. The survey was conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Chapman Entertainment, the producers of Raa Raa The Noisy Lion. To find out about the Hello campaign visit www.hello.org.uk.
