Win a bundle of books with Babygrowz! Books For Baby
AVE COME AT ACING CAR! not treat your little
It is never too soon to introduce your baby to books and their many benefits. Even before birth, reading to your bump can help language skills develop and start the bonding process. Once your baby can grip she can begin to hold books. Start with plastic bath books and board books then build up to ‘proper’ picture books. Sharing books is great fun and should be a part of your daily routine. Use them to calm a fractious child, as part of your night time routine, to teach them about the world around them and to improve and increase vocabulary. Introducing books can lay the foundations for future literacy and research has shown that children that had books early on scored better in speaking, listening/reading, writing and even maths at school. For your chance to win a bundle of books, simply finish this sentence My son/daughter loves books because......and email it to editor@jollytotsmagazine.co.uk by 17 February 2010. A winner will be picked by the Jolly Tots team. Terms and conditions are available on request or can be found on our website www.jollytotsmagazine.co.uk. Santa – the truth? Most of us can remember the wonderful feeling of anticipation as we hung up our limp, empty stockings on Christmas Eve knowing that they would soon be heavy, knobbly, and rustling, tightly-packed with goodies brought by a magical old person with a long white beard. But should we be telling our children something that amounts to a lie? Or is the Santa story a harmless myth that simply stirs the imagination and adds to a child’s sense of wonder?
20
Some parents believe you should never lie to your children; others prefer to go along with the story for as long as possible. Many are somewhere in between,
happy to preserve the magic for a few years, but then gently tell the truth when the time comes.
Page 20
by Susan Elliot-Wright Much depends on the child’s age. Pre-school age children think differently to older kids; for them, the
Jolly Tots 24 page Winter issue 8:CBook
lines between fantasy and reality are blurred, and fairytales or stories about talking animals are part of their lives. But what happens when they notice that there are several in-store Santas, and that the one they’ve just seen was a bored, skinny twentysomething with a pierced ear and a bad case of acne? And how do you keep the secret? Instead of telling them that we send presents to Santa to deliver on Christmas Eve, (which seems a bit pointless) why not have some inexpensive stocking presents that are just ‘from Santa’? Then family and friends can pass their gifts directly to the child, which means the giver has the pleasure of seeing the child open their presents, and the child has a second round of present-opening to
25/11/2009

look forward to. It also makes the early-morning stocking presents all the more magical. Get them to hang their stockings by the fireplace so you won’t have to creep into their rooms. Or have identical stockings ready filled so you only have to swap the full one for the empty one.
Be keen to see what Santa’s brought them – and act surprised!
Make older siblings feel important and grown-up by asking them to help keep the story alive for the sake of the little ones.
Explain that Santa has lots of helpers, and that’s what the department stores Santas are. This will make things easier later.
Page 21
…and how do you tell the truth? There’s no reason that they shouldn’t continue to believe in the idea of Santa and what he stands for – sharing, kindness and generosity. When they ask you outright, or when you feel it’s time they knew the truth, you might want to wrap it up a little so you can let them down gently. Perhaps start by admitting that you buy presents on Santa’s behalf and that you’ve never actually seen him. You can go on to say that it’s a wonderful legend that many people still believe, though not everyone does, and you can end by saying that he probably isn’t real. Well, even we don’t know for sure…do we?

What you should know about Measles
by Susan Elliot-Wright
Thanks to the MMR vaccine, measles is now relatively rare. However, the illness appears to be on the increase again, possibly because of concerns about the MMR. According to the Health Protection Agency, there were 1348 confirmed cases in England and Wales in 2008 – a significant increase on 2007. Latest figures for 2009 show 1135 confirmed cases to the end of September. Measles is a highly contagious viral illness, spread by contact with droplets breathed out by an infected person. Anyone who hasn’t had it can be infected, although if you’ve had it yourself, your babies will be protected by your antibodies until they’re about four months old. The incubation period is one-two weeks, and the illness will be infectious from four days before the rash appears until five days after. Symptoms
What should you do?
Runny nose, barking cough and feeling generally unwell. Possibly earache and swollen neck glands. Feverishness with temperature of around 39°C. Red eyes – may have a slightly ‘piggy’ appearance Sensitivity to light. Tiny whitish-grey spots on the inside of the cheeks, possibly extending down the throat. These are called Koplik’s spots and may be seen before the rash appears. A flat, red, non-itchy rash which usually starts around the ears and then spreads to the face, body and legs within a couple of days. The rash usually appears 10-14 days after exposure to the disease. Spots are small at first, but quickly double in size and begin to join up.
Keep your child at home (and away from other children if possible) until he is completely recovered. Measles is one of the most unpleasant childhood diseases and can make your child feel very ill. Keep him in bed in a cool room with subdued lighting. Give plenty of fluids and keep his temperature down by sponging with tepid water and perhaps Calpol or junior Paracetemal – check with your GP.
